POLYTUNNEL aluminium BASE RAIL PROBLEM: First Tunnels polytunnel build for OFF GRID family

- We have been putting up our new First Tunnels polytunnel over the past few weeks. This week we are talking about a problem we have had with the aluminium base rail which resulted in us replacing it with oak and attaching the polythene that way.
To see the first part of our polytunnel build:
Next week we will be sharing the rest of our polytunnel build and showing the end result. We will then be looking to add raised bed and our irrigation system. This is all part of our efforts to grow more of our own food and become more self sufficient. For more videos like this, or for more videos about our off grid life, please consider subscribing.
Thanks for watching!

I used and would highly recommend Northern Polytunnels, their design is far more advanced and easy to work with, I didn't have to buy any extra bits, no woodwork to rot. The website itself is brimming with info, they even have a screw in ground anchor system which would have worked well for you.
Great videos! I watched your one about the plums too. We have the same issue with maggots and our green gage is perfect! Apparently there’s some tape you can put round the tree to stop eggs being laid in the plums.
You shouldn’t have to mess about fitting your own oak base rail when you’ve paid for aluminium and probably thought to pay the extra to future proof your poly, aluminium not going to rot like wood ,, send the company an e mail ,, nice growing space by the way 👍🏾
You’re right we probably should have done this but we went all ‘off grid’ about it and decided to take matters into our own hands 😂 We’ve talked about how we will keep the rails and when the time comes to replace the plastic we will give it another go. Some comments on Facebook have given us ideas as to how we could approach it differently. That’s what is great about this lifestyle: you never stop learning 😊👍
I’ve been looking at a similar poly tunnel for our plot
Have you got a particular make in mind? Ours is First Tunnels 👍
@@The_OffGridFamily it was first tunnels we were looking at
@@livingoffgridinscotland It’s been a long old project but the weather has not been kind to us. Definitely better to build it in summer! We were aiming to build in Autumn but it was delayed and the Christmas break was our next opportunity. At least it was 15 degrees when the plastic went on 😊
@@The_OffGridFamily we have to fence the site first and I’m going to run the digger up the site and put field drains in before we start
It’ll either be this summer or next summer depending on other projects
The bothy was supposed to be finished for June…. So that’s running well behind and I’ve got a sawmill/timber workshop to build…
@@livingoffgridinscotland Sounds like a good plan! We had to raise our area because it can get very wet. (You saw the mud!) When are you hoping to start building the polytunnel?
Heat gun will take the pleats out
Your pleats at the top should have been more bunched together… hard to explain… I’m doing mine today.. with aluminium base rails… so if mine don’t work I shall small claims court them for the money back.
😂
You’ve got the weather for it today (if it’s the same as it is here of course!) All the best 👍 Let us know how it goes 😊
All done! Was pretty easy! You have to fold 90 degrees… all the pleats angle to the door frame not the bottom… I have the aluminium base rail too it was tight…
You aren't supposed to have pleats along the bottom, it is supposed to wrap around flat and only pleat it where the frame curve is.
Thanks for your comment 😊 we’re total novices when it comes to polytunnels so it’s been a learning experience. We can always give it another go when we replace the plastic in the future 👍
