We bought a polytunnel from First Tunnels at the end of last year. It's 14 feet by 20 feet and we went with the full storm bracing kit too. We removed a large shed that was built on concrete, so no digging of soil, just heavy duty screws to anchor the tunnel down. My husband has been building it over the last few weeks, by himself. Like you, we've got 3 raised beds, slightly higher than yours because I have severe pain and chronic health and the beds are at a height where I can sit on a low wheeled seat. Beds are full of soil and compost and we're just waiting for a warmer, less windy day, to get the plastic on. Hopefully next weekend, the weather here is looking brighter and a lot warmer than now. I'm surprised that you didn't go with sliding doors considering how windy it gets where you are. We opted for sliding doors. Loved your video. It also instilled, what I already knew, that my husband has done an amazing job, to build it by himself and only getting help to put the plastic on. New subscriber here 💜🌺

Hi chap, great video, just thought I'd add a few extra tips that will benefit you and your viewers in the future and would have eliminated many of you frame tinkering problems. We have a 60 ft by 30 ft polytunnel. With you all the way on Pythagoras. Regarding the level site. It isn't such a big deal if you can create a floating datum for the top of the ground tubes. The way you do this is stake outside of the perimeter of the polytunnel length and width ways but inline with the perimeter. Ie extend each length by about a meter on either end. Then you will need a length of clear plastic pipe with about a 6 or 7 mm center. Bring each end up to the stake, secure onto each stake. Then add the magic ingredient water it will level due to gravity. You can then run a taught string from one stake to another on the points that the water perscribes to you. Then either measure down with a tape and plumb bob for every ground tube. Or simply measure down at each stake and run a second line at the correct height. This marks the correct height for the top of the ground tubes. It also indicates the line position for the tubes. All you need to do then is measure your center distance, normally 5 or 6 ft, and tie a bit of string to mark said point. Line up the top of the tube and adjust the botom of the tube until your spirit level shows it verticle in both planes and ur done

    • @jukeseyable
      @jukeseyable 3 роки тому

@@andymccabe6712 the sheet for our 60 ft by 30 ft is £450 quid. If you want it fitted properly, with decent tension throughout, on a big tunnel , any errors are magnified. 45 meters of pipe cost around 15 quid , the time to smash in 4 stakes, and to fill the pipe with water, then tie 13 bits of string to the string line isn't a big deal. An hours work tops. It will take far longer to adjust 13 ground tubes, if uve over or under dug. A laser level would do the job nicely, but I don't have one and to set up a thousand sq meter be market garden has cost £9,000 so I'm not inclined to shell out for one, but I still wanted my polytunnel done properly, without paying for a company to do it. Frame was 2nd hand £750, sheet £450. Fixtures and fittings for side rails that we added £250, and timber £300. £1750 for 172 meters of polytunnel bed space, so just over a tenner /m

The experience with your greenhouse reminds me of an episode of an neighbor near me. He sold his “best field” to a new arrival neighbor. When he said, “best field”, he smiled. I couldn’t figure out his smile, but realized he was a farmer. So why would a farmer smile about selling his “best field”? Well, “best field” means “best hay field”, which has lots and lots of wind to help the hay germinate. When I realized this, I laughed. So yes, you’re so right! Just because you have a lot of sun, doesn’t mean you won’t have wind.

A little tip we use in the building industry for checking the corners are square without having to do much maths: Firstly mark out the wall locations with string. Then measure 3 metres/feet from a corner along one wall and mark the string with some masking tape. Then measure 4 metres/feet from the same corner along the other wall and mark with the tape. Measure diagonally between the two marks and it should measure 5 metres/feet. This 3/4/5 rule applies to any building regardless of size as it is the Pythagorean Theorem. If you have a very small structure you can adjust the ratio (e.g. 1.5/2/2.5). Use this method to check all four corners. For a final check if you have a long enough tape, measure diagonally from corner to corner across the building in both directions to verify that both measurements are the same.

@@andymccabe6712 two guy one each end pull poly tight and you will find it will slide nicely up and over the frame. My wife and I did it on a 30 x 18 ft tunnel. have since done it on 2 other tunnels of about the same size

I really , REALLY enjoyed this. I am planning a small "greenhouse" in my garden this year, and was a little sceptical that doing a "poly-house" , wouldn't end up being , optically, a disappointment...Nur now I see how bear and Clean it looks... and the advice to put down a weed-barrier will be well taken. thankyou so much. .

You're probably already hard at work on your next 3 videos as well as all the springtime tasks, but I have a wish: could you do one about the care and maintenance of your food forest trees? I just bought a peach tree, and I'm trying to learn more about planting and pruning properly. There are lots of videos about these topics, yet not all are as detailed and clear as your educational videos. I really enjoy how you share information!

Great stuff! My poly tunnel is still under construction. A more modest scale, some 6' x 6' x 8'. Material costs are about a tenner (ground sheet and fixings) as most of the components are scrap or repurposed. Basil, cucumbers and chilli's are the intended harvest this growing season!
Keep the content coming, always appreciated!
    Inspirational 😁

WHEW! THAT was a 'JOB'! WELL DONE Daniel...WELL DONE! Nice to know that you now have a relatively controlled place for growing some of your food. With this large project under your belt...you are able to concentrate a little more on the cottage. Moss is still soOOoo in love with you = sweet! It's refreshing to see the lovely greens of Ireland...bareness and brown is depressing. The health you have and the greenery you enjoy are blessings to count each day...they are a wealth! Thank you for sharing your time/talents with us. You narrated this very well...it was 'not' boring at all. God bless you n' yours. :)

Great video. I've been waiting to see this one for a while now. And it's been very helpful, have learned a few things from you. Considering a polytunnel build myself. Just wanted to know where you sourced the steam-treated soil you used for your raised beds? By the way, have been following you from the beginning of your channel, we have in fact done the same as yourself, (moved from the UK to Ireland to a cottage and live a more simple permaculture lifestyle} a year before yourself. And you can imagine our surprise when we found out you are literally live a ten-minute drive from us! Your journey has reflected our experience so much, and it's an inspiration to us. Good to know we are not the only enthusiastic blow-ins around here. So hello neighbour!

We have 2 polly and 1 netted tunnels. Two are in quite windy positions. We find the hotspot tape (the only thing we can find at this time you can use for the job ) inadequate for the job, as it is in layers, any movement and it splits. This makes whichever covering rub, hole then split apart.
We are now awaiting our third set of coverings. Which with the shipping is very expensive because of weight.
So when thinking of building take heed of what is mentioned avoid windy positions.
Apart from the tunnel issues. This is a very good video.

Have u thought of a Hot Composting Bin for inside the tunnel? It creates warmth/heat & u can set seedlings off on top of the composting bin. 🤓💗🙏🌱

Well, it's only a mistake if you don't want to grow in the ground! Remember, it's a lot less expensive and a lot less work to grow directly in the ground. Also, you can spray weeds(moral objections aside) and you can selectively cover smaller areas with weed mat at much lower cost, if that's an issue....
