Limited Trains USA - Luxury and Speed. In the twentieth century United States, the term "limited" was commonly used to describe top-tier trains, particularly those operating as overnight services with very few stops. However, the fastest train between New York and Washington, DC, a day train, in the Pennsylvania Railroad era was called the Congressional Limited Express, and it had only a few stops, like the longer distance "Limiteds". One of the first and longest running named trains in the country were the Chicago, Milwaukee & St Paul Railway's Pioneer Limited.

The term "limited" meant limited stops to speed up the schedule.
