Great to see someone get exited by music. You can listen to Genesis over and over for years and still get joy from finding something new in it. May I suggest the song Dance On A Volcano.
Founder member Steve Harris of Iron Maiden has stated Genesis being one of his influences in his youth. You can definitely hear that in this song if compared to Iron Maiden songs with their multi part songs.
If you like the more melodic side of Genesis, I'd suggest you seek out songs composed by their keyboard player Tony Banks (he is the one who wrote “Mad Man Moon”). Another one of his stellar compositions is “One for the Vine”: it's not Mahler 🙂but Banks once said Mahler is one of his favourite composers. Maybe that explains a few things...😉 Thanks for the fine reaction!
Thinking of Mahler is a nice compliment to Genesis. (I agree that Mahler is an excellent composer to appreciate) Many people say certain sections of music by Genesis remind them of heavy metal bands. We must remember that this Genesis came much earlier, so they influence many others, even metal. Thinking of heavy metal you might look at Genesis' song "Land of Confusion" and the cover of it by the metal band Disturbed. Perhaps feature them together? Also, both videos are excellent, but totally different.
Ever song on this albums is great, and this is Genesis' greatest album, imho. And though Steve Hackett's solo on "Firth of Fifth" is probably one of the best in rock music, I'll also recommend his guitar work on "After the Ordeal" from Selling England by the Pound also!
I thought for sure you'd talk about the background strumming / scrolling at around 4:30, I was wondering if that was a classical technique. It's a great song that takes multiple listens to hear all the parts. This whole album is a joy, looking forward to hearing you experience it.
Mad Man Moon is from the Trick of a Tail album, the second after this one, and the first festuring Phil Collins as a singer instead of Peter Gabriel, Who had left the band after The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.
For a nerdy quibble, Phil sang lead in "For Absent Friends" on Nursery Cryme and "More Fool Me" from Selling England. He also often sang harmony and for most songs performed live when Peter was doing his costume changes and other antics, Phil would back him up as Peter sometimes did not get back to the microphone in time.
Yes avery good album, the next "Wind & Wuthering" is even better imho. Obviously far away the "wonders" of the previous albums. Moreover, the voice of Phil in the mid 70s was too female and acute for my taste.
@@thomasmacdiarmid8251 Yes his role was very important mainly as a superb drummer but also for the vocal harmonies. Too bad when he became the lead singer with that female and weak voice... (but he eventually would improve a lot in the '80s, when the songs got pop)
Foxtrot, Selling and The lamb in a row, simply "alien".Their unrivalled peak also for the prog rock movement (along with other superb bands of course).
Peter Gabriel - lead vocals, flute, percussion Tony Banks - Hammond organ, piano, ARP Pro Soloist synthesizer, Mellotron Steve Hackett - electric guitar, 12-string guitar Mike Rutherford - 12-string guitar, bass guitar Phil Collins - drums, assorted percussion, backing vocals
Try listening to Entangled; it’s dreamlike, hypnotic, and ethereal with the 12 string guitars being very prominent and minimal to no percussion, with ethereal synth to finish out the song to the end. It’s one of my favorite songs.
Have you done Ripples yet? Short name, beautiful song. You mentioned your liking of songs that touch your heart. Ripples is off their first album release after Phil took over on vocals. Just a dreamy, epic song with tasty guitars, mixed with piano and Phil's perfect lyrics. After Peter left, many thought Genesis were done...then they released Trick of the Tail... just an absolute wonderful album. Here's the link for you ua-cam.com/video/7H1xV998xI0/v-deo.html
Because you liked "Mad Man Moon", I'm sure you will enjoy "Entangled" and "Ripples" from the same album "A Trick of The Tail", but surely the song "Blood on the Rooftops" from the next album "Wind & Wuthering", wish is the last one with the guitarist Steve Hackett participation before he unfortunately quit the band. The band turned more pop without him.
With all respect Genesis released much more interesting and complex songs that the (very good) "drags" you mentioned (apart for Blood on the rooftops which I consider a little gem) ; )
As long time fan, I find especially compositions by keyboard player Tony Banks very entertaining. I think you will find many original chord sequences and classical inspired themes in his songs.
Tony started at a University studying Music, but decided he wanted to stay with Genesis. (thank you, Tony) Banks has mentioned a number of classical composer's who influence him. And, of course, Steve Hackett studied classical guitar.

One for the Vine written by Tony Banks
Jone, really enjoying your Genesis journey. This album and A Trick of the tail are my two favourite Genesis albums. Not a bad song on either album.
Genesis at their best!
Moonlit Knight.
Indeed
A true masterpiece.

This is my favorite opener of all time. BTW, Mad Man Moon is from A Trick Of The Tail... no worries.

Your reactions are always entertain and informative.
Hey Mr Ruitz, if you want real classical guitar from Steve Hackett, listen to his A Midsummer night dream album with full orchestra. 🤩
Or just listen to Firth of Fifth :)
@@Newfie-zc7ug already done 👍🤘🏻

Peter is BRILLIANT !
The working title for the dreamy outro used to be called Disney, as it was very airy fairy, as you can hear. 🙂

Dancing With The Moonlit Knight, but you probably now that by now 😂

Please, react to Genesis - Stagnation.
Im thinking dingleberry was taken
There's an error in the title of the video you are reacting to. It's not _Moonlight_ but _Moonlit_ that should be written.
