I'm watching 2 years later. Two takeaways: 1) this video is the beginning of a great friendship between Matt and Colt. 2) I was thinking the other day about how we got anywhere before GPS -- atlas/road maps and asking directions at gas stations. Great video.

When I was a teenager, my uncle had a Jeep FC 150. I used to go off roading in it, with him., and loved it. In the ensuing 60 years, I've owned almost every kind of 4X4 there is. But I was never able to acquire an FC. About 15 years ago, I met a guy who had the coolest FC I've ever seen. It was one of a limited number that were built for the Air Force. It was a crew cab that was built on a FC 170 chassis and had a short bed. The guy who owned it had modified it quite a bit, mostly in the drive train. That thing was fantastic. Google "Baja Beast Jeep FC". I envy you and look forward to seeing your project, with it. Good luck and enjoy it.

Damn you found one.... and a damn nice one. I have one I'm building but I didn't want to divulge that. 😁
They're damn hard to find. You did well thanks to your channel.
I saw one at a body shop like 15 years ago. 2 years ago I decided I want an FC. So I went to that shop and the shop was still there. I asked about the FC and the shop owner asked how tf I knew about those trucks. About 15 years ago I bought a 96 Cummins from the tow yard next door and that's when I saw the FC over the fence. So the guy tells me... he has 4 back there. 1 is a builder and 3 parts trucks. The customer is a friend and he hasn't done a damn thing to them in 30 years. No sale.
I found 1 in town right off the damn freeway visible to the world. I asked about it. They moved it and covered it. No sale.
I finally went up to Idaho on Christmas day for one. Woohoo.
Yup in a blizzard. I didn't see the road for like 200 miles 💪😁🤘
I spent double the fuel on the tow back because the damn FC is a shaped like a wind sail/parachute/ loaf of bread.
I wish you great luck and fun on your build.
If you find parts sources, please share. Someone told me about FC Jamboree, I was hoping to make it out there some day to talk to people about parts.
I have the front closed knuckle Dana 44 off this truck. It's got some kind of disk brake conversion.

That thing is awesome! Don't paint it..
BTW . . If you download maps on your phone it ill work for navigation. I also turn off the data and wifi when I'm up in the mountains in Colorado or something hiking.. the GPS works fine for finding where you are, even without data or maps downloaded.. But yea, its always great to have an old skool paper map.. LOL

The story behind the "U6000" on the side of the bed on the FC (which looks like a GMC bed to me) is that back in the 60's Utah required all pickups to put the weight rating on the sides of pickups. Trucks rated at over a certain weight rating I believe it was 9000 lbs) were required to run over the scales. So, the people in the weigh station could tell by the number on the side of the truck if you were supposed to be pulling into the scales. My father had a 63 GMC pickup with the rare (at the time) 4 wheel drive option. First 4x4 I ever drove, at the age of 12.

We used to have to declare in Utah, up until the mid-80s, how much the truck was licensed for. The U6000 sticker is the weight the truck was licensed for (6000 lbs). So happy when they did away with them!

The actual route finding is done "in the cloud" on the Google servers so if you have no internet access, it can't plot a route. I have no idea why Matt was unable to get it to work on WiFi. Might have something to do with the condition of the phone.

Once you do that you do not need cell service for either device you can get full directions (but not traffic updates). I always carry a preloaded tablet when travelling in case my phone suffers an indignity.

U6000 means 1/2 ton truck in Utah for state registration. A U9000 would be a 3/4 ton. This was to comply with an old law in Utah where a truck’s GVW had to be posted on the vehicle.

A mid engine build would be sweet for weight distribution.

I can't believe it's that rust free from the Salt lake area, the U6000 means under 6000 lbs, years ago in Utah you had to mark the weight you registered your truck for

58 59 chevy truck bed. U6000 is weight rating license numbers in some states. Probably was a commercial vehicle.

Who needs brakes when the motor is locked up? The clutch is your brake. And if the engine suddenly frees up during a panic stop, hey, you freed up the motor!

What pickup do you all figure that bed came off? I'm guessing mid to late 50's International Harvester.

Hey Matt thanks for all the effort. Save your maps off line, in Google maps, ahead of time. Then you can still get around 👍.

What do you recommend I do with my xj that has not much of anything left in the rear quarter panel where you can typically cut an fold them off near the rear bumper so please any advice will do, my thought is to get rid of wht is rusted an just weld in new panels of some sheet metal.

Just to let you know that bed can sell any were from $ 800 - 1500.00 bucks. If you don’t do any more damage to it. Can’t wait to see ya build it.

1958-59 Chevy Apache Fleetside. If it’s the short bed even RARER. You need to measure Bed I think the short bed is 78 1/8 long by 50 inches wide. The boards measure 77 - 1/8 long. Can’t find measurements for the long bed. From what I can see you may have the short bed. Have fun and can’t wait for the build.

Sorry. Looks too have no rust , just surface rust and a bent rear corner with a few dings and dents. Surprised it still has tail light rings and lenses. Boards are replaceable as well as all the sheet metal. If short bed $ 800 -1500 maybe more. Long bed $ 800 - 1100. Long beds can be cut down to a short bed. You see ??? Research ?.
