I personally believe that this song is about a hurt person who is hurting someone else in a relationship because they're hurting as well. Misery enjoys company.
Agreed! I knew that the first time I heard it. The gf is taking her past trauma and insisting the current bf (singer) fix it and be her punching bag so she doesn't have to face the truth that she has now become the emotional abuser towards him.
@@rnopes21 What part of the song leads you to believe that she insists the boyfriend "fix" her? While, in my experience, that is definitely a common trend among females, I don't hear it here. It sounds like she's using her past hurt as a license to treat him like garbage and that the relationship is all about her.
The genesis of the song is that one of Thomas' ex-girlfriends was emotionally abusive to him. It's okay to specify. We don't need all songs to be ambiguous and have the meaning left to the listener just so it can help sell more records. So, it's about a girl with baggage who confidently decides to abuse her current boyfriend.
“Playing the ‘please love me’ game” is a great expression. Someone who hates themselves so much that they demand your love for them. I absolutely dated that person. I’m gonna use that phrase more often.
Awesome… I love that this is being kept out there. I was one of the people who listened to the lyrics and enjoyed that he’d made a female perspective lyric based song. However, I’m a writer so…🤷🏻♀️ Growing up near Portland made it amazing to witness their climb. Matchbox 20 will always be one of my favorite bands, hands down, of all time. 90’s Portland was the BEST!🎉~Sheeara, Alaska
I loved "Push" because all the way back when I thought or was being emotionally manipulated I pushed back! Stood my ground & found strength. Found freedom as well. I did this long before Match Box put words to music.
I remember liking matchbox 20 when I was a kid. We didn’t understand the lyrics because well they weren’t real clear and sometimes they mumbled. We just liked the vibe of the music. So your message was lost on our generation. Thankfully!!
Rob Thomas is one of the most brilliant songwriters that ever lived.

That's exactly what it's about, the girl in the relationship is abusing the boy.

I had a childhood crush on this man. Very powerful song writer and amazing voice. I see not liking them, but saying they suck is a bit absorb tbh.
He’s adorable! Brilliant talent! Makes life better❤❤❤
Gosling singing this in Barbie was the best part.
Rob Thomas seems pretty 😎. 👍🏻s up if you agree.

That poor kid! Ruining her childhood one matchbox concert at a time
The interviewer looks like the guy from Grounded For Life
My grand daughter is going to his show in June 10th
