    Thank you so much for making these videos about pencil grasp. My 3.4 refuses to hold the pencil other way than Fisted grasp or sometimes he would hold it from the top part. 😮‍💨 I’ve tried to show him using the crab method but he is not interested. He also does not like to color and when he does, he gets easily tired and prefers to scribbled on the whole page. I use the chubby crayons and markers. Should I change to the thinner crayons, colors and markers? I hope you can see my comment. 😊

      Hey Keyeli! Thanks for your comment and question :) My first focus would be to see if there's a way you can naturally increase his interest in drawing/coloring. My thought process is if he grows to like the activity, he'll be willing to do it more, which will naturally help him hone his grasp. Is there a medium you haven't explored yet, like those really cool sniffy markers? Or paint/watercolors? Markers on a white board? What about coloring books with his favorite characters on it?
      I think the idea of switching to thinner markers is a great one! With thicker markers, since they are too big for tiny hands, it makes it virtually impossible for them to use anything but that fisted grasp. Try it out and see if it helps! But bottom line, don't worry too much about it, your little one is 3.4 and it's totally normal for him to 1) not like coloring/drawing and 2) not have any interest in changing his grasp. He will get it eventually! Like I said before, see if there's a way you can get him to more enjoy coloring/drawing by mixing up the mediums and focusing on his favorite characters! I hope this helps, sorry for the super long response!! -Dana :)

    Here in india at age 3- 3.5 yrs age they are expected to have a tripod.grasp for basic writing standing lines. Sleeping lines. Slanting lines curvy c u and inverted c and u individually and in chains. We are working with the pincer grip and flip method however we r not able to get any real hold.
    I do see the 4 finger grasp option. Can I know more about how I can help my child achieve a grip using that method.

      Hey there! Thank you for watching my video and also for your great question. What I tell all my parents is to increase daily fine motor practice as much as possible, because once our kids develop strength & coordination in their fingertips they'll be able to hold the pencil easier. Below I'm going to link a few more videos that address fine motor skills, check them out! I hope they are helpful! And if you have more questions, feel free to email me directly at TheOTGuide@gmail.com

    My grandson is 10 years old and has autism.. thank you for this video. He draws the exact same thing over and over and over. Do you have any videos on how to get an Austin child to dwant to draw something different?

    • @TheOTGuide
      @TheOTGuide  Рік тому +1

      Hey Norma! Thank you for visiting my channel :) It sounds like your grandson enjoys drawing and that's great! My biggest tip would be to try to find things that interest him. Check out artforkidshub.com - this website has so many cool drawing tutorials for kids, show it to Austin and see if he wants to learn how to draw something new! Many kids with autism struggle with rigidity (deviating from what they know/like.) If he doesn't want to draw something new, maybe he'd enjoy drawing that same character in a new place, or in a new position, etc. And if not, that's okay too :) I'm just happy he likes drawing and expressing himself - that's huge!

    Hi! Is it possible for an 18 month old to have the four finger grip or the dynamic quadrupop one? My husband and I were comparing to our child and she seems to have one of those. We are a Montessori family so I know her fine motor skills tend to be really awesome, but we’re curious because I don’t even know which one exactly it is! Do you have an ig we can send a photo or video to? Super informative. Following. Thanks!

      Hey Laura!! So sorry for the delay, and WOW! Every kid is unique, so I wouldn't rule out the possibility! Maybe your little one is going to be an artist someday! Send me a pic at TheOTGuide@gmail.com and I'll let you know. Cheers! -Dana

    Hi, my child is turning 4yrs old in a few days, he uses 4 finger grip, should i correct it or just let him be for now? Thanks

    • @TheOTGuide

      Hey Issa! Sorry for the delay, great question. Personally, I'd just let it be for now! 4 finger grip is pretty typical for a 3-4 y/o. Keep having him practice coloring and drawing and doing fine motor activities, and I bet it continues to develop naturally :D

    4 year old here! Has no interest in writing but in UK we have homework with letter writing. They want him to hold tri pod but he gets frustrated and if he tries to write it’s a very faint line (not enough strength or coordination). Do you recommend certain types of utensils or supporters? I know they sell pencil grippies or triangle pencils and crayons. If he’s just not ready to hold it is it better not to force?

      Hi Sara! Thank you for reaching out. Awesome question - at 4, the vast majority of kiddos aren't holding the pencil in a tripod grasp yet. I'm going to link you to two of my favorite videos. This is the first one and it shows you how to teach your child to hold it correctly: ua-cam.com/video/eq1hlbitwEs/v-deo.html

      To answer your question, I recommend continuing to build up those fine motor skills and exposing your child to drawing/coloring/writing tasks. Once he builds up those skills, his grasp will develop naturally. Best of luck! Let me know if you have any other questions! -Dana

    I'm 15, I have a 5 finger grasp and I have mediorcer hand writing. Is there anyway that I can do to fix this?

      Hey Alfredo! So sorry for the delay. If I were you, I'd trial some different pencil grips and find ones that are comfortable. I'd also get super fast at typing and proficient using tools like speech-to-text, since in modern society we can essentially type or use speech to text for everything!

      @@TheOTGuide Funny enough, in kindergarten, I loved using pencil grips! I have also taken time to practice my typing speed since I have a computer science class, my teacher was amazed that I could type as fast as possible. 😁 Thank you very much for responding to my comment!

    i had a stroke and trying to get handwriting back. my shoulder is still a bit weak left handed. do you have any suggestions on how to hold pen should i use marker or crayon? hold pencil like 1 yr old?

    • @TheOTGuide
      @TheOTGuide  11 місяців тому

      Hey there! I'm really sorry to hear about your stroke, and kudos to you for working on getting your handwriting back! That's a significant step. First things first, have a chat with your healthcare provider or a rehabilitation specialist. They're the pros and can give you personalized advice based on your unique situation. When it comes to tools, don't be shy to experiment with different writing tools like markers or crayons. Some stroke survivors find these more forgiving and easier to manage. And hey, if holding a pencil like a 1-year-old feels good, go for it! Whatever works for you is the right way.
      Remember, it's all about finding what feels comfortable and gradually building up from there. Regular practice, maybe some therapeutic exercises, and the guidance of a healthcare professional will surely make a difference. Keep up the great work, and I'm rooting for your progress! 🌟
