BINT EL SHALABIYA (THE GIRL FROM SHALABIYA)

BINT EL SHALABIYA or “The Girl From Shalabiya” is one of the best-known Arabic romantic folk songs. The title of this song is associated with a beautiful village girl from Shalabiya; while the location of the eponymous city is unclear, tradition suggests that it is an Arabic adaptation of Seville or Išbīliya (إشبيلية), a city in southern Spain, during the Umayyad conquest. BINT EL SHALABIYA was made famous by the prominent Lebanese songstress, Fairuz (فيروز), in the late 1950s.
