Earl is the man for fingerstyle. He combines the classical, Chet Atkins, swing and jazz beautifully and so effortlessly. His recordings are just fantastic. As a player I really marvel at this guy in particular. He is well known but I think massively underrated as a player and arranger. One of the best ever crossover guitarists for sure.
Earl's style is jazz, bolero, and classical at the same time. He is just amazing, to me it has more sense to play jazz on a nylon string spanish guitar, than a regular "jazz guitar"
Carlos Urquidi
Nylon string guitars have many characteristics similar to jazz boxes.
except when you try to do flamenco with it... IMHO
Flamenco is another beast
Maravi Yoso It is, I did study it for a while, unfortunately I developed tendonitis, so I had to stop, I'm better now though.
Wow is right.... I started to listen to Earl in the mid 80s but never seen him. This video really informed me on what kind of person he is, it seems like the greatest are humble, music lovers, and with natural ability. Thank you Earl, for setting such a wonderful example for musicians and people in general. Your attack is meaty and really gets inside a person.
.
Thanks Earl Klugh, Venezuelan Nights is one of my favorite compositions of yours. It reminds me of the South American composers Antonio Laura and Pernambuco.
When I first heard Earl Klugh on Abu Dhabi FM radio in mid 1980's at I was studying the classical guitar. From listening and playing Carcassi, Fernando Sor and listening to the other extreme of Jazz guitar, E.K's playing style (which had a new unique soft tone of nylon guitar playing popsy-classical melody-chord sequences) roused me. I have not heard this tone before. Curious, I called the FM station and came to know of E.K.
Had the great privilege of seeing him live at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Art; mid 80s. Earl has to be one of my all time favorite guitarists. He's the real deal; very talented yet humble, a gentle spirit and it comes across in his music.
Earl sound like a gentle and humble man, real talent !
Genius! Earl Klugh brings it all to guitar. A master for our time.
Incredible mastery! I had the pleasure of meeting him last year (2012) after his show in Macon, GA. Thanks for posting.
What a beautiful sound from his guitar!
Earl Klugh one of the great master guitar player I had known in the 70's.
This man is one of my favs...thanks for having him...
Beautiful performance by this hugely talented musician.
Thank you so much for posting this video.
Marty Robbins "Streets Of Laredo". Earl Klugh is one of my favorite guitarists. It sounds like he is playing a harp.
Wonderful playing, Earl. Also, the man interviewing you asks interesting questions, which, combined with your playing, makes for an excellent presentation.
I love that he plays a classic guitar! This was like sitting in the living room for a real visit with one of my favorite musicians. His album on audio cassette was our favorite road music, traveling the highways of Montana in our Buick Reatta. xoxoxox

Do you remember which album?
@@Wolferal Midnight in San Juan. Thank You for asking. I had to go back to my cas
sette tape library! Now listening again and bringing back memories.
@@evelynmoyer9069 Haha, that's awesome!
Earl Klugh’s solo recordings are magic.
Wonderful guitarist. Definitely a humble and genuine human being.
One of the finest musicians I have ever seen and heard:)! Grew up getting lessons from a jazzmaster, never played "Alfie" like Mr. Klugh can! Some of the greatest jazz melodic arpeggios I have ever heard :) !
10:26 - when they said "same time" at the same time. just beautiful.
I need more of your interview with more hours, i hunger for your music - to me you remain the greatest jazz musician.Again we need your live performance.
Amazing Earl..full of inspiration
Earl is and has been one of my very favorite players. Love his stuff
52:56〜Beautiful 👏🏻👏🏻It was my favorite song that I always listened to instead of a lullaby . 〝This time〟👍👍
Great interview of one of my all time favorite artists. He seems like a truly sweet guy too.
earl , i have listened to all your albums.great inspiration to me.
i have waited all my life to see my number 1 give a lesson on youtube.am overwhelmed...
Lovely thank you Earl!
What a great lesson and interview.
What a great musician and such a real guy.
Beautiful melodyes!!!!
I always liked Earl Klugh! Never met him even when he played George Benson! Seem the both live and I met George!
One of my favorite guitar players ever!
When I was little (like 5-7 years old) my dad used to tell me "this is Earl Klugh" when he listened to Jazz music. Not knowing a single word of English at the time, the only interesting thing about him was his "weird" name. Now on the other hand, I get why my dad likes him so much. What a fantastic musician he is!
BEAUTIFUL
I still have the tape of Benson and Klugh at the Galaxy Club in Seattle (70's) - great stuff...
Absolutely awesome!
This man is awesome, thank you for sharing the video.
Earl has a SUPERB sense of harmony/melody,,, which is absolutely CRITICAL for any musician that wants to improvise, and improvise WELL! That's it! We have to develop our ears in order to become a musician! The great classical violinist, Yehudi Menuhin, when playing together with the equally great, Stephane Grappelli, said that he was very envious of Grappelli, because he could IMPROVISE!!!! And Yehudi being classically trained strictly memorizing music, rather than "creating/improvising" it! So,, bottom line............... TRAIN YOUR EARS!!!!
Earl is a master musician. A genius
That's a great Alfie. Earl you are a prince
I heard a guy play "Alfie" in a campground in Colorado, on guitar, in 1970.This is the only other time I've heard played on the guitar.
As a mobile DJ I always play a lot of Earl Klugh during the dinner period.
He's great! People will come up and say who is that? They love his music.
Smooth and easy
BEAUTIFUL.. EARL.
genial! interpretacion con corazon...felicitaciones
I actually got to meet him he's a really good soft spoken man .if you get a chance to see him, go for sure
yes my teacher was in Nashville... George Hudson

I love his chromatic approach to his chord progressions, and how he also plays sixth intervals and utilizes upper structure approach to his voicing a
great sharing
Tu es Le meilleur guitariste earl merci
Great! His own style.
amazing
No one can get on that level. Because it's his DNA.
Bela reunião...
Earl Klugh, a virtuoso guitarist!
magic hands, my idol
Earl was running his guitar directly into an LR Baggs Preamp/DI then straight to the sound board. -
Such a wonderful chat isn't it
Gosto do modo com sao composto os seus temas intrumentais
Earl Klugh........ great!!!!!!
You weren't listening or watching then. The clip at 0.50 is magical. I'd give up if you really can't learn anything at all from just listening to and looking at the guy play. You do need ears, you know, to be a musician.
Muy interesante, descubrí otro gran guitarrista Earl Klugh
I'm looking forward to listening to more of his music Unfortunately, Earl is uncomfortable at interviews and has a lot of difficulty giving answers with details. There's so much more I'd like to know about his history and style of play.
Also, to be fair, I do like Klugh's playing. And, it is a relief to let go of an old grudge, and just listen to his music, after all this time.
When his favorite Chet Atkins song, the first thing he remembers is not the name, but the chords and the melody. He answers the question by playing the song
Earl is a very good man, i wished he will be in nigeria to play when i want to do my wedding.
IDOL
as i saw this clip a second time,i do respct Earl he is afine person.
MÚSICO EXCEPCIONAL!
This according to me, is the most difficult of all guitars to play/learn, classical guitar is the best guitar!!! Respekt Earl Klugh and George Benson!
Right. Well, Byrd's bossa nova playing, for example, was "straighter" than that of, say, Bola Sete (whom I preferred in that genre); but, I sure wouldn't say Byrd couldn't play. I liked some of his stuff. Thanks for your response.
This guy is a giant.
The question is how long does it take to understand and memorize the jazz scales and chords and be able to play as smooth and flowy as Earl Klugh make it sound God it almost impossible
Beautiful music.
Btw how to spell the pick-up name? That sounds beautiful too.
Thought everyone knew. An interviewer asked him if Byrd was an influence; and, he said, "No, he can't play", along with a couple other comments. This was yrs. ago; and, this video is the 1st thing I've watched, or listened to, by Klugh since then. I know a luthier who built a guitar for him, and who agreed with my "punk" assessment (also yrs. ago). Now, to be fair, he may have changed; and, I realize that I have no right to sit in judgment of anyone (which I've repented of). :)
thank you Learnand; but I mean inside the guitar.. wich undersaddle, or mic, or what other thing before preamp. thank you
No, I didn't read it online. It was yrs. ago, before I even owned a computer. Might've been in Guitar Player Magazine; not sure.
No capo no effects just a man who knows his instrument.
What was the name of the last song at the end of the video? That was very beautiful. Please help.
Depends what you mean by "there", Burnt!
what does he use to amplify the classical guitar? beautiful sound. thks
Earl has a brother, Vaughn Klugh, who is a musician as well.
Earl Klugh is one of the Greats. I love EK
(7:00) is the answer to the question about Earl Klugh that I was looking for... why does he use a classical guitar for Jazz?
Its cool how he just grabbed that Chet Atkins tune he probably has not played it in years but bam...
Some chords are very difficult to play on classical guitar because of stretch. Some impossibe!
cant add this to my fav?
Can you provide the link to the interview?
blessed!!
As far as his pickup system goes, I don't know what pickup system he has in that guitar. - Steve
Earl is brilliant as a player and is one of my all-time guitar heroes! However, I found this particular video difficult to watch- the host frequently interrupts Earl and asks a totally unrelated question right when Earl is about to demonstrate or describe his technique in more detail which I find utterly frustrating. Also he asks a lot of questions about Earl's upbringing which are nice but, again distract from learning about Earl's actual technique.
+John Olsen I gave up @ about the 450th "umm" or ahhh....
35:00 Marabella 🤯
What did he say?
even the word contemporary feels old
contactkeithstack lol ca c'est drôle
Nice tasty arrangement of Alfie
Hello earl ...if this makes it to you.
You have been a mager inspiration. To me.
At Dave Richards guitar in Livonia Michigan you gave me a quick lesson that imprinted on me till now. Thanks for that.
Nice Earl.. I'll never touch my guitar ever again..
