Just made this right now and came out delicious. I used red lentils and put a spritz of lime at the end. Thank you Ella for such simple but tasteful amd healthy meals!
I made this today and it's so delicious! I added double the amount of spices and served it with brown rice and yoghurt. SO good! Such a cheap meal too. Thanks Ella!
lentil dal is saying dal dal twice just as saying chai tea-- chai is tea !! lentils is dal ! you may say Dal-rice as dal is usualy eaten with a combination of rice and maybe a pappadum on the side for some crunch. or dal- roti as a combination of dal with unleavened flat bread made with whole wheat flour. The most commonly eaten dal in India is "toor" dal and mung dal which basically is split pigeon peas and split mung beans. the Indian way to do is we cook the dal with water and a pinch or turmeric in a pressure cooker. meanatime in a pan heat some oil throw in some cumin seeds, black mustard seeds - let splutter then add a handul of curry leaves, 1 small onion finely chopped, 1 tomato finely chopped, 2-3 cloves of garlic and about 2 green chillies finely chopped . cook till tomatoes are soft and add the cooked dal to this and let simmer for about 5-10 mins on low heat. most dals do not need a lot of spices. In the state of Punjab a very nutritious version is made with a combination of whole black lentils ( called black Udad in hindi) and kidney beans called "ma ki dal" some states in India love to add something called Hing or the english word for it is (Asefotedia - its a kind of resin also used in Portuguese cooking) you have to add just a pinch or 2 of this for about 2 cups of dal. Asefotedia has medical benefits to reduce or eliminate flatulence.
Hi! I’m from Argentina and a friend of mine living in London told me about your dely & recipes. Now I love you and cant stop watching your videos and putting them into practice. Thanks!!! Im ready for more 🥒🥬🌽🌶🥕🥦🥑
Great News about your app ! I have been inspired to start a cooking was well ! Come by and say hello 👋 The Recipe Therapist! Love 💕 the work that you are doing ! God bless Celene 🥰👍👩🏼🍳
Congratulations on the new addition to your family! I just bought lentils last night so I'm excited about seeing this post. I'm definitely trying this out for dinner. Thanks for sharing!
So yum! Make a similar version of this often, Butternut squash is amazing in this as well! :) Can't wait for the baby, if it is just half as beautiful as his/her mother x
First of all congratulations to you and matt, and best wishes for your pregnancy.second is this looks very yummy i'll make that soon.thankyou By the way,i always think your voice is very calm and soothing and i like listening to you😊
I’ve fallen off the wagon lately, been really, really bad with eating the wrong foods. Sugar and dairy, cake with ice cream. 🤪 This is inspiring me to stop the insanity. I’ll definitely make this, sounds yummy and filling. 👩🌾
Hi Ella, Thank you for another lovely looking recipe. I am making this as i type. A tad confused as your write up below says to cook it uncovered and doesn't mention any chilli powder. However in the video you say to cover it and you do add some chilli powder? Please can you let us know which it should be and how much chilli powder and if this is mild/hot etc?? Thank you in advance!!x
I got this from your website but it says leave uncovered which I thought means no lid but in the video you put the lid on now after nearly 2 hours still waiting for that "thick and creamy " texture that everyone is raving about 😩 Ok it's delicious just like the sweet potato brownie so thanks Ella👍
Congratulation!!! Be happy and healthy with your baby. The recipe sounds yummy, but I think I already made something similar, because there are so many versions and ways how to prepare curry - you can add veggies, lentils, beans, tofu, chick pea....Only comment - if this is meant for 4 people, it must be very heavy and fat, hard to diggest. If the coconut milk is full fat, there will be together with oil for resting more than 40 g of fat? I can not imagine to digest it..
I love your recipes and would love to have access to the app, but it is not available in the Netherlands app store :( Are there plans to release it to other countries in the future?
Sadly the old app was very difficult and expensive to update, hence why we could only do it every 3-4 months. As it was a one of payment it’s also become totally unsustainable for us, and sadly we had to take the difficult decision to withdraw that app and create something new. So we’ve taken all the feedback about how to make it better and created something really special. The new app (which is totally new rather than an update) will launch in February with 400 plant based recipes, lots and lots of really easy to follow recipe videos, a meal planner and shopping list section, a much much better search function and favourite feature as well as about 40 yoga videos. The app will then be updated with new recipes and content a few times a week, so there's always something new for you. It’ll be 99p per month, and you’ll get a free trial and will keep the old app as it is. That being said the old app has to stay on the phone it was purchased on, apple won't let it move phones xxxx
Interesting recipe. But Always.. Always prewash the lentils and rice before cooking. If you can pre soak then even better but washing them is mandatory
It's best to wash lentils well and then soak them for a few hours before you start cooking them. This will make them easier on your stomach and you absorb most nutrients that way
Not necessarily true of all lentils. I only rinse red lentils a few times, but put straight into boilng water afterwards. Soaking red lentils would only leave you with mush. Grean lentils don't need to be f pre-soaked, but you are right, it does reduce cooking time greatly as the lentils absorb some of the liquid as they are soaked. We soak our basmati rice for approximately 15-30 minutes, rinse it 2 or 3 times, drain and then use about 1 and a half cuos of water for 1 cup of rice ( usual proportions for unsoaked basmati rice would be 2 cups of water to 1 cup of rice). We boil it on medium boil til only a few centimetres of liquid is visible and then add the lid to completely cover, lowering to a very small glame or lowest simmer and it cooks off in about a couple more minutes. Checking rice with a fork (or to mix in salt when it first starts to boil) helps to keep the rice from going sticky as it seperates the starch a little. I tend to skim off sny residue as it boils 3 times as rice often contains dirt.
This is so simple and delicious! However, in the video you instruct to cover it and let it cook, but in the description box, you say to leave it uncovered. I'm a big confused!
I'm hoping it will be later this year. So far over 90% of our users have been on apple devices but if the app is popular when it launches then we're definitely going to look at adding an android version xxx
S R I think she just prefers not to lose her money, because it costs to make this stuff, and if not enough people use it they lose their money. It’s playing safe with their financials, not discrimination..
I cooked this tonight and bought green lentils like the video said but after 30-45mins the mix wasn't liquidy and the lentils were still hard? Do I need to precook them first? Or use different lentils? I had to throw it in the bin :(
Excellent recipe and to hear about the app. Is the app going to have a Android version for those who don't use an iPhone? Hopefully you have a good pregnancy.
I just checked and I don't see an Android version at the moment. She has another app that I already have and can recommend: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.jmills.deliciouslyella
To begin with it'll just be iPhone as sadly over 90% of our users have been on iPhone, but I hope we'll be able to bring out the android version later this year xx
@@deliciouslyella I just noticed on the Google play store that you have the Delicious Ella app so you must of developed a Android version last year because it states that it was last updated in October 2018.

Buddha Piyao Dal” has a double meaning: It is both the word for lentils and beans and the term for a thick purée or soup made from lentils.

Why dal hasn't been washed ? In India we mostly make dal after washing it . And it's better to pressure cook the lentils ,it will turn soft soon
Will you make it also available for Android?

They need a minimum of an hour to soften, she says it in the video. Definitely rinse them beforehand if you’re making it again
That's so strange, you do normally need the full hour though x
Congratulations!!!!
Can you use green speckled lentils instead ?
Congratulations 👌💕
Oh wow, that coconut yogurt dollop looked like a poached egg on thumbnail 😂😂😂
I thought the same!
Yum 🍅🥥🥑🌶
Nice dal
I’m getting my dad onto lots of plantbased meals but he’s not a fan of coconut milk, could I replace it with tinned tomatoes so it’s not creamy? X
Personally I wouldn't do that as all you would taste is tomato then, you could omit the coconut milk it just wouldn't be creamy.
Wouldn't coconut cream and coconut water mixed together be a good substitute for the milk?
Johannes Robbins I need it to be a tomato based dahl rather than a coconut based one x
what could you use instead of tomatoes as I don't really want to buy those in the winter ...
You can perfectly leave them out. No problem. I've done lentils many many times without and it works just as good 😚
