I am in complete denial that season 3 is over. I don't know what to do. I'm not ready to move on!!! This episode is one to remember, though, and that final rally definitely rivals the Seijoh rally from season 2. My emotions were running wild watching this one, and I'm pretty sure I cried no less than 4 times. Ugh this was a classic episode. I was worried when I started season 3 with it being on one match, but it definitely lived up to the hype. Onto season 4!!

One of my favorite things in this episode is one that gets easily missed by people on their first viewing. Ushijima says "I'll defeat you next time" to Kageyama and Hinata, but he's a third-year and this is the last tournament of his high school career. How exactly will there be a next time? He's basically saying that he expects to see them both make it up to the professional level, and that he'll have his rematch with them someday on that level. It's a massive acknowledgement from the guy who thought they were nothing special at the start of the season.

One of the saddest things in this episode is Tendou's "Farewell, my paradise". Shiratorizawa was the only team that let him play his way, the team where he could give his all, the only place where he was known as a genius... and with that loss, his last season ended.
Also remeber before Shiratorizawa, he was the weird one, the monster, the odd one out. He suffered bullying and segregation, but in Shiratorizawa everything was different.

That shot of Daichi hugging Asahi and Suga is probably my favourite clip in the series. Two years' worth of struggles, from having their expectation of joining a powerhouse school crushed, to being bottom feeders and having their team mates quit on them, down to everything we've seen from them in series so far, released in that instant. There are very, very few shows that can convey emotion the way Haikyuu does.

I've seen this show at least 3 times before, and this time around I've been watching the episode/the rection to it back-to-back. The emotions are still boiling. I am still as nervous/desperate/ecstatic as during my first watch. The scrupulous work on the character development shows itself in the fact that you feel every single thing that each and every of these characters feels, every time.

In an earlier episode, Washijo threatens to have the team run back to school if they don't make a good showing of themselves, but here he acknowledges their effort and play in his own way by telling the team to get on the bus after the awards ceremony. I also think its a mindset of, we played our best so no running back, there were alot of serve errors lets get back on the training grind and look towards the future tournaments. • @Mattybobs
      @Mattybobs Рік тому +110

I actually always loved the 100 serves comment. I interpreted it as him seeing his team crushed and crying and instead of empty "you played well" comments that wouldn't make them feel any better, his 100 serves comment basically tells them "This isn't the end. This is just another step or obstacle to overcome. Lets get back to the grind." And I feel like this idea is supported when you see everyone on Shiraorizawa realize this and start to smile and become a bit more hopeful.

Multiple times in this game, shiratorizawa was on a roll, but eases up because they made a service error. Realistically, esp at the top levels, people who get into a groove can dish out killer serves til kingdom come. Just take a look at yuji nishida, which is aptly japanese. Lol

I love that Tendou made you cry. The impression I always got from him was that the creepy persona was a tactic he used when playing. A really effective one at that! He took what his childhood bullies said about him and used it to his advantage, in a sense. In the scenes where you see him interacting with his team he’s always so kind and cheerful to them, albeit a little eccentric too. Everyone else on Shiratorizawa is so serious, I always appreciated the comedic relief he added to that team.
Don’t forget to watch the Land vs Air OVAs where the Tokyo teams have their qualifiers! I’ve seen other reactors miss them, then get confused during s4 when new characters that were introduced in the OVA suddenly pop up.

To clarify further on previous comments, the Big Ushijima scene is actually symbolic of him being too much for two of the first year players to handle, after making a miracle dig on Hinata's spike off the block and then switching his course at the last moment to avoid Tsukki's block, both of their final attacks to finish off the game were thwarted, thus in the beginning it's only Ushijima holding down Hinata and Tsukki because they think of him as someone insurmountable "Even when his form was crumbling..." and "..he changed it to a cross at the last second." are implied to be along the same thought process, before both begin to succumb to the image Ushijima has taken in their minds. As the play develops, the older members, Daichi, Asahi, and Tanaka all make the saves to keep the play alive, and after every save the imagery changes to show they're metaphorically helping take the pressure off the shoulder's of the first years so they can stand again. If you rewatch the scene you'll see Hinata and Tsukki are both finally totally free of Ushijima's pressure before the final play, before they all need to fly together, it's assumed that if Daichi, Asahi, and Tanaka hadn't snapped Hinata and Tsukki out of their focus on Ushijima they would not have been able to do sync up as 5 on the last play. This is my favorite season and I've only rewatched it a dozen or two times, I'm thankful I got to rewatch it again with you and the community!

The visual of Ushijima pushing everyone down and the third year players lifting his body is one of the best things I've seen on animation. They're making all the little big plays on that rally to keep the team alive and to open the space for the younger players to shine. It's POWERFUL imagery and great writing. That's the moment I felt ALL the goosebumps.
It was great seeing you react to this season and providing your insight as a professional player. I only played Volleyball during high school, and there's a lot about the technical aspects that I don't remember very well so, hearing you talking about the things the show gets right is simply awesome. The thing about the Tendo-Ushiwaka friendship is that it had to be them. Tendo was the only one who didn't feel intimidated by Ushiwaka, and Ushiwaka was the only one who didn't feel creeped out by Tendo. It was great that through their friendship we got to see a more human side of both of them that they weren't comfortable opening up to anyone else.

Thank you for your very entertaining commentaries and reactions for Season 3. Your excitement is infectious and a joy to watch. Be prepared for more excitement, back stories, gripping the edge of your seat actions and yes, more tears in Season 4. There will be lots of new characters to love and old ones to love even more. I personally love Season 4 the most. Before I watch Haikyuu, I would never have thought a sports Anime can make me feel so much excitement and emotions. I never thought an animated volleyball match can make me grip the edge of my seat so much haha. I really love this series.
Happy holidays and may you and your family have a beautiful Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Looking forward for you to start Season 4 Recaps.
PS: I think what Washijo did at the end wasn't so much that he was unfeeling or even cruel to his players. I think he did what was most appropriate for his own style. He didn't reprimand anyone or blame anyone for the loss. It would make the loss more pronounce if he had suddenly treated them with sympathy and kind words. Brushing aside the loss and making them hit 100 serves to let out the frustration of losing while also improving on this necessary skill, in my opinion, is a better alternative at this stage, than kind words. Most of us would not like to hear those words like "You did well" or "Its ok" or "You will win next time!" immediately after a hard loss in a tournament because we do not want to have to pretend that we are ok when we feel like shit haha.

the music that plays during the final rally has been in my top 10 Spotify songs each of the last two years
Kageyama throwing Hinata to the left because he anticipated Ushijima slamming an angle in the face of a straight block is next level, you can see why he was invited to the national youth camp
the first time I watched this and saw Ushijima pushing down Hinata and Tsukki I thought it was literal, and I was like 'is that allowed?'
yachis foaming mouth gets me every time, such a funny detail
on the crypt keepers 'get on the bus' comment, earlier he had said that if they didn't perform well, they would walk home. his comment is a way of acknowledging how well they played
ushiwaka saying 'ill defeat you next time' is also a big acknowledgement, it means he expects to play against Hinata and Kageyama at the professional level

I set a reminder on my phone for this reaction, did not disappoint! It's been fun reliving all the moments with a first time watcher.
Sometimes, I think anime transcends fiction. I put Haikyuu on randomly one day as background noise and ended up watching the first 2 seasons in one sitting. I always find it so strange how there's a lot of non-anime watchers make comments like "you still watch cartoons?" There's just something more profound to it than that. Like, those are our BOYS. Karasuno is our TEAM and somehow this completely fictional cast of sketches made us all tear up when they won a game of volleyball. I think the entire reason I even started watching reaction videos was simply to validate my emotions and I'm glad you felt the same things all of us have felt while watching. Can't wait til you start uploading season 4! You're in for another fantastic season and season 5 will probably be dropping episodes weekly before you finish. Fly!

It feels so validating that a pro like you approve (and thoroughly enjoy) Haikyuu (this is the first reaction video I got to see with you, will subscribe immediately). I loved HQ!! ever since the first episode aired and appreciated that each 'opposing' team get enough love and appreciation. They are not 'enemies' like in many other sports anime/movie but teams with strength and unique vibes - to learn from. This series made me realize that volleyball IS the BEST team sport - not violent (except for the face shots XD), every single member is important and it is a real pleasure to watch. I got my nephew (9) watch it and now he's playing it 3x a week, he just got his first 6-team beginner's tournament and got 2nd place - he loves it, loves the team, loves everything about it. I hope he will make it to the town's official team and play it whole-heartedly. Thanks again for your video - loved to see how much you love and appreciate this series.

A lot of people trash on the art style used in season 4, but I personally adore it, especially because it makes the characters better match the art style from the manga. The art style is a lot more flexible and expressive, which does give it more variability in quality than the rock-solid S1-3 style; it has more low points in quality but it also has many incredible moments too.

22:51 you empathized with ushijima there at the end. It's been hard to empathize with him, since he doesn't talk much... And on the background story with the flashback of his chilhood, you can clearly notice he is on the autism spectrum. That's why his grandma was saying he needs "special treatment" and the father refused. When you realize that, you start to notice all he says and does actualy makes sence. And once you notice you start caring for him, not because of his condition, but because despite that condition, he is a very rich character, and appearing in such few episodes you still see character growth, that's awesome

I've been waiting for epidsode, by far my favorite in all of Haikyuu! This is the best imagery I have ever seen, in any format, ever! Just so good!!! It completely captures the whole season. It captures the struggle between Tsukishima vs Ushijima, the struggle between Hinata vs Ushijima and it completely captures the different philosophies of the two teams.
Let's just marvel at the final rally sequence. It is so good that it deserves multiple viewings to truly appreciate.
The "dream" sequence where Ushijima is crushing Tsukki and Hinata tells so much about the whole season/game. It's an interpretation between the contrasting philosophies of the two teams - forming a team around a strong player vs the whole team becoming stronger as a unit. Ushijima crushing Tsukishima representing the battle that Tsuki has been having with Ushijima the whole season. Even aftersetting a trap for a whole set, Tsuki STILL couldn't stop Ushijima. Hinata is of course struggling to be recognized by Ushijima by beating him - but legs are giving out, he's gotten stuffed, got six-packed. They've basically thrown everything they've had at Ushijima and still Ushijima pushes through..."So cool..." as Hinata said.
And then the interlacing of Daichi, Asahi and Tanaka picking up the balls as they "lift" Ushijima off of Tsukki and Hinata. They all see the monstrous challenge that Ushijima presents and they are all fighting against the pressure that Ushijima brings.
Notice how Kageyama is not part of the "dream" sequence since the only person that intimidates Kageyama is Oikawa. It is also Kageyama who foresaw the possibility of the cross, switched with Hinata as soon as Hinata served and was in perfect position to be able to dig Ushijima's spike. It can also be argued that Kageyama is already a monster player like Ushijima and so of course, he does not feel the same pressure as the other Kurasuno players.
However, as all of Kurasuno is going into the air, with the camera 360* panning around the synchronized attack, Hinata sends the last hit. There is a "murder of crows" comprised of 6 individuals, a complete team, flying against the lone eagle. So while Kageyama may be in a class of his own he is very much a part of the team.
Just a beautiful sequence with great imagery and exquisite attention to detail.

I think washijo sensei is justified in being skeptical about hinata's success. Remember that this is still just to QUALIFY for nationals. Meaning most of the teams in Nationals will be at shiratorizawa's level or even better. Tendo was able to render hinata's main weapon, the freak quick (minus tempo spike), useless a couple of times. There could be a dozen tendos in nationals (players at his level that can block his spikes as easily).
And honestly, without kageyama, he won't even be able to play on the court with his skill set. The freak quick is the only thing allowing hinata to be useful on the court as of the moment. If people can stop his freak quick, he won't be a threat anymore. And if he isn't a threat, he isn't any good as a decoy.
The reason he was able to score that final hit was because shiratorizawa was bracing for a freak quick, but it didn't come out. (hence them being surprised when he merged with the other players for the synchro attack). Now, without the freak quick, he really doesn't have any fundamentals. He can't do time delay attacks or any complex offensive plays, he's short for a middle blocker and he hasn't even worked on his blocking technique that much. For his stature, he also doesn't know how to receive properly, and his serves are basic standing serves. As much as I don't wanna say it, without his freak quick, he's just a short middle blocker (which is already a disadvantage for his position), with almost no fundamentals (also the reason why ushijima criticized him for not being as good a player he expected him to be). That's why coach washijo says that as the higher he goes, his volleyball journey will be much tougher, even tougher than most players at his level, as he is right now.
But washijo sensei will prove himself to be the epitome of tough love as the series goes on. I'll wait for the day people realize how big of a help he is for a player like hinata, as he's probably the only person out there who can truly understand how hard it is for short players like them.

But I can't wait for those same people to realize how much of hinata's future only happens because washijo criticized him to the point that the coach becomes confident that hinata CAN make it beyond high school volleyball level. To achieve something he was only able to dream about.

In fact, his replacement is way closer to what I imagined his voice to be like way back when. That being said, I was extremely saddened to hear of Tanaka Kazunari's death and it took me a while to accept the change as well even though the new voice is closer to my own vision of the character. The metaphor with Ushijima pushing down the middle blockers could also be read as the upperclassmen coming to support their underclassmen. Tsukki and Hinata couldn't really push back - they were basically helpless against Ushijima. Hinata's spike was dug out by Ushijima, and Tsukki, despite his best efforts for the first time ever, only managed to get one stuff block the whole game. It took the combined effort of the three upperclassmen on the court to give the two 1st years enough breathing room to do their jobs.

  • @gavinrad1
    @gavinrad1 Рік тому +2

One thing that I think sorta slips by because of how subtle it is compared to the rest of the episode: Ushijima is a third year. He won't be playing any more games for Shiratorizawa so when he says he will beat Kageyama and Hinata next time, he is acknowledging them as worthy rivals that he will compete against again at the professional level.

  • @TownspersonB

I don't know if anyone gave you the watch order yet since I've only read a handful of comments, but I'd recommend: the clip from the movie that shows what Shiratorizawa went through after the game, then the two episode OVA called Land vs Air (Riku vs Kuu if the site uses Japanese naming), then Season 4.
Land vs Air shows what the Tokyo teams went through while the Shiratorizawa game was happening, and it just made sense for them to release it as an OVA at the same time as Season 4 from a narrative/story pacing view. And normally, the top 2 teams in the Tokyo tournament would go, but since Tokyo's hosting the tournament the top 3 teams from their tournament will go.

3rd season is my fav, bc this indeed change my view for every middle blockers. From viewers perspective, I thought ace, wing spiker, anyone who's in duty to spike are the coolest. But, the mangaka doing his great job to emphasize that volleyball isn't individual sport, every positions matter. And from what I learned during season 1-4, whenever I watch volleyball competition, my eyes will be aware to those blockers! And if I get the chance to be a volleyball player, I want to be a blocker!!!! I can see the flawness eventho ppl barely recognize it. I want the joyness when I get the chance to stop, slowing down, delivered the balls to another players, and see the opponents faces when they know their ball not touching our ground easily!!

    Ah, what an episode
Mad respect for Tsukki, who was the MVP according to me as well. He truly has come such a long way.
I love the fact that Kageyama was the only person not there when Ushijima was holding the team down because he was able to read exactly what Ushijima was going to do. He also played an excellent game. If Tsukki was holding down the defense, Kageyama was doing the same offensively.
Ushijima and Tendou's conversation was so good. You can tell how well Tendou knows Ushijima and Ushijima is for once being vulnerable. Very fitting that the first time we see it is while he is having a conversation with Tendou.
Ushijima's final words to Hinata and Kageyama actually mean a lot.
First, he acknowledges their growth and them being from the concrete. Almost as if he's taking back what he said about infertile soil not yeilding fruit.
Second, he says he'll defeat them next time. Given that he is a third year, they can only play again if they all continue to play professionally. So him telling them this is acknowledging their ability and in a way saying 'I'll be waiting for you when you get there'.

I cannot wait for you to advance in season four and maybe (hopefully) read the rest of the story of the manga (because I am sooo sure you are going to faint from excitement at what happens after the anime hahha) but at the same time it kinda feels nostalgic, seeing how you are almost there ;O;
What a ride truly! Are you going to watch the OVA too? there is a special episode which shows the classification games of the Tokyo teams (Nekoma, Fukurodani, etc) to Nationals

Thank you Sarah, do you know how many people all around the world
waiting for your video every week?
It was a beautiful experience, and I am deeply grateful to you.
There are some concerns about season 4, but the basis of the story is still the Haikyuu we loved.
Although the original production association Stopped supporting and left the production to
a somewhat inexperienced outsourcing company, an art style is only just a style.
I think the important thing is what's in it. (and the bad level of the picture was revised when the DVD was released)
Personally, I think the 4th season is more beautiful and full of meaningful scenes than the 1~3rd season .
I'm so excited to see your reaction.

Thing is though, Tsukki expected to be able to kill block Ushijima more. He actually let himself believe he could do something that quite frankly just isn't done against Ushijima before nationals. And he feels disappointed that he wasn't able to do more, which is good character growth.

Even though you're heading into S4, still so much character development! So happy we get to share in your reactions, always a fun time

Another thing that might have been missed is the fact in the black and white scene, the reason why only tsuki and hinata were pinned down by ushijima is because of the immense pressure he is putting on the middle blockers.

ah man, yet another episode that never fails to make me sob LOL.
the OST playing during that final rally, the imagery of the Karasuno upperclassmen pushing Ushijima off of Tsukki and Hinata (and not, as other people have pointed out, Kageyama! :') such a small detail but makes you realize he was the one player on the court who Ushijima couldn't outplay in that moment), the third years hugging and crying together after their win... and so much more. we all cried right along with you Sarah, don't you worry! cannot wait to see you begin season 4!

It's been about a year or two since I last watched Haikyuu. That combined with me getting as invested as I did watching it with you made me forget how this match ended. So much so that I had convinced myself it ended the other way around!

I can't wait for you to watch season 4! The art style changed a bit and everyone lost their cute fluffy hair to simplified spiky hair so you're probably not gonna be a huge fan of that since you don't like change, but you can kinda get used to it. Although I still really miss the old art style :') The animation unfortunately isn't the greatest either but otherwise the season is amazing and the 2nd part of it is one of my favourite parts in all of Haikyuu. I think you're definitely gonna enjoy the longest match of S4, I think it's currently the best match Karasuno has played in my opinion so I'm really looking forward to your reaction to that.
I also hope you'll react to the Riku vs. Kuu OVAs (two 20-minute episodes), it's the story of which teams makes it to nationals from Tokyo. Since it's a big region and they're also the hosts, they get to have 3 teams, just wanted to explain that in advance since it might be confusing while you're watching. I highly recommend you watch it before you start the 2nd half of S4 because we get to learn more about Nekoma and it also introduces us to some side characters that will be appearing in S4 and you'll probably be pretty confused about who they are if you don't watch the OVAs before😆 (edit: okay i saw the comments on the community post that you'll watch it, i'm really looking forward to it!)
