@@TheWizechatmgr Still 9v at starter positive. I even did a upgrade on wires (POS and neg) still won't crank. 9v out of Solinoid and to the starter. Gonna roll it backwards tomorrow make sure engine rotates. If it does I'm going to out a car starter solinoid on it. New starter, batt, solinoid, and wires.
Would be REALLY nice if u happened to mention what contraption you were workin on. ex: quad , motorcycle, snowmobile ??? It makes a HUGE difference in case you didnt think of that.
You raise a good point. While the engineering is the same, I guess it could confuse some. I plan on redoing most of the content I have up, so I'll try to incorporate that change. =)
I have a 2004 raptor 660 won't crank all the way and smoke comes out of the cylinoid and gets really hot on red cable . Already replaced the decompresser, starter clucth, battery and cylinoid. Still having the same problem, dont know what it could be help.
Hi thanks for the video... My bike doesn't start at all. The electrics don't turn on and I'm not sure if the starter relay isn't working or if it's the ECU that doesn't work .. but my bike don't even make a noise or even the electrics don't turn on. What could be the problem ? I broke down 2 weeks ago and and realised the front coil pack was split in half, could that have fused/earthed anything else in the process?
@@TheWizechatmgr it's a Suzuki Intruder 125cc 2003. I took it to a garage last week and the guy couldn't fix it but he thinks it's the ECU. If all the electrics stopped working do you think it's the starter relay?
See if you can find a schematic and then trace the wiring. Even with the ECU shot you should at least be able to get your 4 ways to work typically with the key on...

Check voltage at battery while cranking and without cranking. Could be a bad starter or a flat battery. Would highly recommend you take the battery out and have it load tested.
My Honda SH 125 stops starting after couple stops and go. It just clicks. Wait for 15 min and it start ok. Battery is fully charged, original started motor is tested and spinning but I still bought new and installed. When I skip relay and connect battery plus and started motor minus with screwdriver it just sparks. Used to start normally on first start but now wont even on first start. Clutch wheels are moving. I also replaced the plug. Could it be something wrong with engine, problem started after like 15 miles, on cold start, biket used to start without problems. Thank you
I see you note that the battery is fully charged - is it a newer battery and has that battery ever been flat? The reason I ask is occasionally a battery can show fully charged on many instruments but still be a bad battery. Take it down to something like an Autozone and have them do a load test. You could also have a flat spot on the starter that could cause something similar - assuming the solenoid is good...
I have tested battery, its fully charged, original started is spinning when I took it off and tested, but I bought new started motor and its same, spinning like old one but wont move the engine to start
Hey I got 2013 ninja 650 and my bike doesn’t even attempt to start but if you get lucky it starts no problem usually after like 20 attempts but when it tries it does it no problem

Tested my starter motor ,also solenoid (even bought a new one and installed it ) she tested good also i found a short to ground checked the cables continuity it beeped so its good i sealed it and reconnected everything and now my starter button is not giving any signals if i put wrench to bypass solenoid motor starts right away And my battery voltage drop to 12.6 from 13.4

TheWizechatmgr Thanks. I'm working on a 78 kz400 at the moment. Bike starts when I jump the solenoid with a screwdriver, but the start button doesn't seem to be working. I'm not getting 12 volts coming from the harness into the solenoid. There are no kill switches elsewhere so I want to test if it's the button only or the button and a faulty solenoid, since a number of the other components have failed.

Let me make sure I understand this correctly. You start the bike fine when it's cold. After the engine is up to temp it won't start again until it is cool. Is this correct?
I have an 85 Honda Shadow VT500c. I’m getting a click when I try to start the bike from the (name ?) starter relay, located under the seat, but the bike will not turn over. I have the right Battery and it is new and good. All fuses are good, unless there are fuses I am unaware of. Anyone have any ideas???
Are you able to turn it over manually by using a wrench on the crank shaft? If so, check the starter motor. If not, you have an internal engine issue that locked it up, and that's no fun.
TheWizechatmgr I appreciate your reply. I can pop the clutch while the bike is rolling and it will start right up. I’m not very electrically incline but I tried checking the starter relay and I (not to sure of voice) think it’s good. Tried touching the hot to the top post that comes out of my starter and got nothing. Not sure if I’m doing it correctly but I got nothing. So starter, maybe.? Any tips? I know how to use jumper cables to touch start a car starter but I worry I’m doing something wrong with the bike.
@@IndianaDundee that's a good sign. That leaves you with the starter most likely being bad. There are youtube videos on how to remove and potentially even repair a starter. My personal opinion is I'd replace it with a new one as that one is likely rather old and ready to die in other ways.

@@TheWizechatmgr I got it started. The mice or rsts in our area eat through a set of wires that ofcourse had to be the wires for the kill switch that ran under the gas tank. They grounded out on them selve. But do know I appreciate that someone out there still has old valves and the cooth I was raised on. My father was a 33 yr Navy vet who was born into the true war of our time . WWII , he was 16 and lied to join because of the times, and he said the only thing that a man has to give away to a stranger is advice and a helping had. Can some one please help me, I am only getting twelve volts from one of the two I bought a new battery new relay start and still only getting 12v from one of the terminals. The other one don't do nothing. My bike used to do one click with the old now it does multiple clicks but no turn over
My Ninja250 just makes a tick noise when I press the button. Battery is fine, tried another battery. Tested the starter motor by jumping it directly. Relay also seems to be fine. Can someone guide me on this?
Sounds like the starter may be bound up. I'd remove it and then try activating it while it is not in place. Make sure to run a ground wire between it and the chassis or negative terminal of the battery. If it spins then it's likely the mechanical portion of the starter that engages it to the flywheel. If it doesn't you likely need a new starter. Good luck =)
Is the zapping noise happening at the solenoid/relay or at the starter? If at the relay you "could" try straight baring it with a screwdriver. I don't cover how to do this as someone may not know how to do it and cause a fire on their bike. Is the battery in good or new condition as a weak battery may sound like that as well, though usually you'll just get a click or a buzz.
The battery is sitting just between the low and high levels, its coming from the Relay, has a black cable and red cable and it goes to a fuse. will take a video tomorrow buddy

Im only getting 5 volts to the starter with the start button depressed. everything ive check over twice, even put a new harness on. checked the switches, grounds, a new battery.. im lost on what it could be, the entire starting system has been replaced to confirmed to work, anyone have any advice ?
TheWizechatmgr with the wire disconnected from the starter I get 12v to the connection. Is Something inside the starter causing resistance? I’ve switched the starter, which was used to start another bike and works fine. So why when installed on this bike it reads 5v?
TheWizechatmgr is it possible that it could be mechanical? I can jump the starter on my other vfr.. the motor cranks strong. With jumper cables and a battery I connect the leads to the starter connected on the (problem bike) and nothing.. I can hear a small click. Like if it’s hitting the gears but not enough to spin the motor.. I’ve cranked the motor by hand it’s not seized and just a few months ago it turned over just fine.. I did take the oil cover off on the right side. Did I reinstall it incorrectly or does the starter motor gear need to be specifically lined up with the starter clutch? I took the spare starter motor and connected the main starter wire to it. With the starter motor outside the case.. and connected it spins right up with lots of torque. Also it’s around 10 volts under load (battery was a little undercharge 12.2 volts) so the starter won’t work under load? Or is it locked up and the load is too much?
If you can get directly to the positive side of the starter you can directly power it from the battery bypassing the solenoid. Otherwise, you can attempt a run and bump-start by running the bike down the street in 1st gear with the clutch in, when you get as fast as you can with the bike in the on position, pop the clutch and hope to god it starts. Safety should be evaluated before doing any of these methods.
Alright perfect, but to bump start a really heavy Yamaha Virago 1100Cc that's suicidal xD,,,, plus I'm only 18 so to run start it I gotta be way stronger, but the first option can I get more information please ?
@@loganqc1309 not sure about your exact bike but typically the starter only has one or two leads going to it (heavy electrical wire.) If you only have one it's going to be the positive - if you can get a large thick wire similar to it, sometimes you can jumper it to the positive side of the battery to where the existing wire comes from the solenoid to the starter.
You only will have 12volts from one cable the one than come from the battery the other goes to the stater you can't have voltage all the time. Because the bike will be craning all the time. He don't know what he's talking about

starter wont turn over until you shake the handlebars and then the starter kicks in.
Sounds like you may have a short in the wiring loom going to the handle bars. Take the tank off and see if you can locate the issue...

Can a bad clutch diode, located near stater relay, keep bike from starting?
Potentially yes, but if you put the bike in Neutral it should bypass that interlock -- if I remember correctly...

Check the power lead going down to the starter and the starter itself. You likely have a short. Also verify you have a good ground.

Unhook battery, remove bolts from solenoid, unplug harness connector and Remove solenoid, installation is the reverse :)

Have you verified the battery isn't flat? I'd start there and work my way outwards.

First thoughts would be bad starter button, bad solenoid or bad starter - assuming battery and wires are okay.

Check your carbs or ful injectors, you must have a fuel or spark issue.

@@city7053 That means you need to check the starter button. See if it has 12v across both terminals when the button is pressed.

+Walter V could be a bad starter or bad solenoid. Have you tested the resistance on the coil of the starter solenoid?
Did you have any luck figuring out if it is the solenoid or the starter button?
Walter V this is exactly what my bike does, when I got my new starter relay I don’t know what to do.

Solenoid may not be allowing proper current through or the battery may be on its way out - assuming no mechanical issues

I did take the oil cover off on the right side. Did I reinstall it incorrectly or does the starter motor gear need to be specifically lined up with the starter clutch? I took the spare starter motor and connected the main starter wire to it. With the starter motor outside the case.. and connected it spins right up with lots of torque. Also it’s around 10 volts under load (battery was a little undercharge 12.2 volts) so the starter won’t work under load? Or is it locked up and the load is too much?
How to bypass a starter
If you can get directly to the positive side of the starter you can directly power it from the battery bypassing the solenoid. Otherwise, you can attempt a run and bump-start by running the bike down the street in 1st gear with the clutch in, when you get as fast as you can with the bike in the on position, pop the clutch and hope to god it starts. Safety should be evaluated before doing any of these methods.
Alright perfect, but to bump start a really heavy Yamaha Virago 1100Cc that's suicidal xD,,,, plus I'm only 18 so to run start it I gotta be way stronger, but the first option can I get more information please ?
@@loganqc1309 not sure about your exact bike but typically the starter only has one or two leads going to it (heavy electrical wire.) If you only have one it's going to be the positive - if you can get a large thick wire similar to it, sometimes you can jumper it to the positive side of the battery to where the existing wire comes from the solenoid to the starter.

You only will have 12volts from one cable the one than come from the battery the other goes to the stater you can't have voltage all the time. Because the bike will be craning all the time. He don't know what he's talking about
It says when the starter button is depressed. Then it goes into checking the coil on their solenoid...
