I just got a '99 honda elite sr50 with only 116 miles on it. It had been sitting up a good long time. I had no knowledge of scooters and in my search for good info on diagnostics and repair i came across your scooter 911 videos. They are great, man. Even someone with no mechanical skill can understand and follow your videos. I appreciate your work. Keep it up.
Thank you for such a clear explanation onthe start system. My problem was intermittent. At times all I got was a click. Then after closing both brake levers and trying again and again it would start. Your explanation pointed me toward watching the brake light when applying the brake. The light only came on in the middle of the lever draw. Another on line video identified that the brake lever switch can stick. I cleared the issue by spraying the switch area with WD 40. Presto! Brake light works normally and the start is deliberate. Thank you!

@@Scooter_911 I figured it out thanks to your video. It wasn't a problem with my starter at all. I's my brake light circuit! I noticed when fixing my tail light that the brake filament would only light when squeezing the front brake. I had been using my back brake to try to electric start this whole time. After watching this vid, I realized that the circuit for my back brake must be broken, so I tried electric start with my front brake and it worked!! You saved me a lot of time, effort, and frustration. Thank you!!!
Garret, my scooter had been sitting for five months, because the electric start didn't work and I couldn't get it going by kick starting it. I later realized that I had to use the back brake lever to complete the circuit, to start it normally, as the front brake switch appears to not be working.

Fantastic! Just discovered your channel to troubleshoot my 2007 Kymco People 150 start issue. When it has been sitting for awhile (few weeks) I push the starter button and there is a 2-4 sec delay before it attempts to turn the motor. Once the motor turns, it will take a bit to start but eventually will. When I've been riding the scoot regularly, there is no delay and the motor turns immediately when I hit the starter button. Note: the battery is fairly new; when it has been sitting I put the trickle charger on to make sure it has a full charge but delay is the same. Yes - brake lever pulled, key in On, etc. Appreciate comments. Thanks!

Randomly discovering this video at 1 a.m. on a Tuesday in Chicago 4 years after you posted it.. because my mechanically dumb self bought a vintage 84' Yamaha Riva 180Z a month ago because it looked cool and just now had to leave it behind in a different neighorhood because it wouldn't start back up after a grocery run. You're video was super helpful and hopefully will get me out of this mess! Tomorrow I go back to the side of the road where I left it to see what I can do. At least, i'm hoping I can use your needle nose trick and get it running and bring it home to further test the relay/starter/switch. Fingers crossed!!
Many newer scooters (including the Chinese ones) have a kickstand safety switch. As in scooter won't start with the kickstand down. Also worth checking . Otherwise, this video is an excellent troubleshooting tutorial, Including a great explanation of how a relay actually works. Electromagnetic coil mechanically closes contacts.
THANK YOU! New owner, and bypassing the starter relay got me up and running. Scooter shop on the phone told me to get it towed, really didn’t wanna pay for that.
You saved me money. This guy from my sister's motorcycle gang was telling me my battery needs charge and not charged by a trickle. When you made the sound of when the starter is not ground properly I ran to my scooter, put the ground wire in another spot and she starts right up.
Scooter 911 Iloveyou for this video.. you saved my money and whom I can trust for my scooter... I love those funny expressive sound in background for expression and humor ... Yes Stared ..

Superb instruction I know nothing about mopeds or there electrical wiring system, but after watching this video I managed to find out the starting motor on my sons moped had give up . Quality!! Thanx buddy. I will be watching your videos in the future.
Very helpful video! My scooter didn't start after filling the gas tank. Fortunately the kick start started it, but the horn was weak and no turn signals. Just bought a new battery. Still nothing (didn't think it would be that easy!) So after watching your video I thought I'd see if my break light turns on and it did. So I tried starting it and it started on the first try. COOL! Still no blinkers and horn was barley there. I shut it off to go get my phone to show the family it's working and when I came back to the garage; NOTHING! not even the break light...
Excellent, and rare that someone does it all right. I'm gonna try and replace my start switch first . This is the first tutorial on anywhere done just right. Thanks much
You are GOOD!!!!...Thanks for the help-vids....I imagine that, thanks to you, a LOT of people have haved saved a LOT of money by fixing their own bikes AND becoming aware that they CAN do it themselves even if they are not so mechanically inclined...
Just finished rebuilding my Saga Retro with an 80cc BBK. I was getting the slow whir-whir-whir problem trying to start it for the first time today. Only the kick start would get it going, and eventually I broke the worm gear inside. Once my new parts come in, I'll be sure to try these suggestions. VERY well done video. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for making these videos! You are so clear and professional with them, even someone like me, who is terrible with mechanical things, can fix what I need to. Keep up the good work!
Hello, my scooter been sitting for a couple months and when i turn on ignition there is no sound coming from the fuel pump do you have any idea what the problem could be ? Thank you
Excellent video, from this I managed to track the issue down to the brake switch, so new one ordered. Could do with decent videos for brake switch & cable replacement and kick start issues. Thanks and keep up the good work 😊
Glad to hear you got it sorted out! I actually did make a brake switch replacement video ua-cam.com/video/xapfVSbhhR4/v-deo.html ! I have plans for a kickstart video in the future so stay tuned!
Most helpful video for this exact issues. Diagnosed from start to finish and explained in detail able to follow along easily. Everything is shown. Exactly what I needed!
I really like how your descriptions were clear and easy for beginners like me! Plus I love your humor.! But I am still lost! I started taking panels off like crazy (just like you said not to) But I really want to see just how everything works. When I try to start it sounds like something is spinning and not catching (manual start doesn't work). I tested the Battery, The Relay so I am guessing its the starter. Is spinning sound typical from a faulty starter ( FYI - Just put in a fresh spark plug and it was crusty!)
Well I'm assuming you're working on a 50cc Chinese scooter then. The two most common issues I've seen that result in that noise are a faulty starter motor, and sometimes a jam in the starter Bendix. You can pull the belt cover off and watch the starter gear "shoot out" and engage the teeth on the variator. If there is a jam the gear won't come far enough out to engage

My bike takes ages to start and once if dose and warms up if I turn engine off it won't start back up again. Very rarely will the eclectic start work so I have to kick start. Aslo front head light don't work and brought new bulbs and still don't work......... any thoughts
I would try a valve adjustment to sort out the running issue. Here's a tutorial I made just for that! ua-cam.com/video/QkkYjRdtQxg/v-deo.html I would think the headlight issue is unrelated but most likely a bad switch or a damaged wire somewhere in the harness
hi, i had start problems and as shown i bypassed the starter relays and it started. but the starter button and the brake switch after connecting directly didn't make the scooter start by the start button. so i placed another button to bypass the starter relays. but i want to make it start as by default. where the fault can be? i connected the startbutton and brake switch directly but nothing. please!
You're on the right track! however connecting the starter button directly to the brake switch will not activate the relay. I would take a step back. You know the start button is good because you just replaced it. Does the brake light illuminate when you squeeze the brake lever? If it does I would have to suggest that you replace the starter relay. Let me know what happens and good luck!
Hello, I have a problem, I have a Peugeot Speedfight 1 100cc that recently seized up/heat seized. It was not tuned. I then changed the cylinder, piston etc. It now starts up right away, but after a while it dies all of a sudden (as if you had turned off the key) and then I can start it right up again, this usually happens when I go over 60 km/h or uphill. When I changed the cylinder etc, I also cleaned everything thoroughly, such as the carburettor, intake, new air filter, new fuel filter (there was no fuel filter before) new spark plug. I also removed the oil pump and put a metalplate with a gasket over the hole instead, I now mix the oil directly into the gasoline. Some other info that might be important. - When I drive over 60 km/h, it starts to make a noise from the variator (CVT), it´s sounds quite a lot. - When it died, I tried to start it again while it was rolling and then it started right away, but it made a noise from the variator, like something "let go" that had been seized up, like a rubber sound, maybe from the belt. - The variator belt touches the variator cover on the inside and has grinded a cut in the metal. - In the variator, where the weights are, the belt does not go down to the bottom of the wheel. - The clutch bell had turned blue from the heat. - The place where the connecting rod attaches to the crankshaft had turned blue from heat. - There was no fuel filter on it before. But i now saw there is an internal fuel filter in the gastank, can it affect the vacuum if you now have 2 fuel filters. Please help me. Regards Andree.
Hi garret love your videos very informative Ive got an issue with my smc 50cc starts and idles no problem will rev up on centre stand but is very sluggish and under powered when riding any ideas ???been told could be Possible variator issue Maybe you could do us a little video regards lee
It very well could be. It could also be a compression issue, either needing a valve adjustment or a top end. I plan on doing some videos on the transmission soon! Thanks for the suggestion!
Dude. Easily one of the better UA-cam videos on scooter troubleshooting I've ever seen. You are as knowledgeable as Brett at 49cc scoot.com it seems, however the fact that you appear in the video and we get to watch you teach us even as far as going drawing on the blackboard and whatnot, really adds a lot to the video production quality. Very impressed excellent job and I can't say if it helped me out yet but I'm sure I'll figure it out. The main reason I watch this was to find out what was supposed to happen to the relay voltage wise when you push the starter button. The answer seems to be it connects the ground. From the starter button, and connects the positive from the brake light. For some reason I was getting no change no matter what I did it's like both were positive all the time or some ridiculous thing so I'm replacing the whole starter button assembly and then I'm going to piss on it and set it on fire. Thank you so much for making this video sir bravo mate
This video definitely helped me widdle down my electrical issue that cause my taotao 50cc scooter not to run. Awesome video. Very helpful

I'm glad my tao tao doesn't have that.
Best Scooter repair channel on the web.
Thank you very much!
I love you. Thank you for saving me from pulling panels off all willy nilly before realizing it's a dead battery.
Hahaha glad you figured it out! Happy scootering!
Y don't starter your motor over
THANK YOU! New owner, and bypassing the starter relay got me up and running. Scooter shop on the phone told me to get it towed, really didn’t wanna pay for that.
This is informational and has an aesthetic to it.
You saved me money. This guy from my sister's motorcycle gang was telling me my battery needs charge and not charged by a trickle. When you made the sound of when the starter is not ground properly I ran to my scooter, put the ground wire in another spot and she starts right up.
Nice work!
Scooter 911 Iloveyou for this video.. you saved my money and whom I can trust for my scooter... I love those funny expressive sound in background for expression and humor ... Yes Stared ..
I'm so glad to hear that! And thank you for the kind words.
I rarely subscribe to channels, but your video was so thorough and easy to follow, I had to subscribe. I appreciate the detailed info you shared. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
Garret, your vedeo on troubleshooting is very well made .you covered everything that one must test to find the problem you took care to teach scooter electrical principles and add a touch of humor and finesse...well done:)! By the way, thank you very much..I subscribed:)
Thank you so much for the kind words and the subscribe!
this is absolutely the best vid EVER!!! I’ve searched and searched ......finally a clean to the point and humorous vid!!!! 💪🏾😎😎😎
Bro you’re freakishly informative and make it easy for me to follow up. I really appreciate your platform 🙏🏽
Information is nothing without a mind open and strong enough to receive it my guy! Cheers!
Ends up it was a bad voltage regulator
Excellent, and rare that someone does it all right. I'm gonna try and replace my start switch first
. This is the first tutorial on anywhere done just right. Thanks much
P.s. did you try the kickstart??
You are GOOD!!!!...Thanks for the help-vids....I imagine that, thanks to you, a LOT of people have haved saved a LOT of money by fixing their own bikes AND becoming aware that they CAN do it themselves even if they are not so mechanically inclined...
Thank you so much for your kind words. Those are my exact intentions! I want to help people the same way I have been helped by the UA-camrs before me.
Man that is so good to hear. thanks for that
Hello, my scooter been sitting for a couple months and when i turn on ignition there is no sound coming from the fuel pump do you have any idea what the problem could be ? Thank you
Great teacher and communicator. The humor is a bonus

Glad to hear it! Keep it shiny side up!
great work, thanks - love and blessings from the UK!
Hello Garret, thanks for this detailed and clear explanation. I have a CPI Aragon 50cc scooter which has been sleeping a few years in the garage. My wife was using it, and when it started to have some problems, we just left it aside. Now I will have a look at it and use your tutos!!! Wish me good luck!

DUDE you are one cool cat bro!. Awesome info, diagrams, camera work, and no BS. You got a new subscrib3r. I appreciate all the education I just received. I ALWAYS forget how electrical stuff works, it's the only stuff about auto I can watch over and over, do over and over, and still forget it ALL LOL. Glad I found your videos!
Here's a tutorial I made just for that! ua-cam.com/video/QkkYjRdtQxg/v-deo.html
I would think the headlight issue is unrelated but most likely a bad switch or a damaged wire somewhere in the harness
Yep, learn to speak and write English
hi, i had start problems and as shown i bypassed the starter relays and it started. but the starter button and the brake switch after connecting directly didn't make the scooter start by the start button. so i placed another button to bypass the starter relays. but i want to make it start as by default. where the fault can be? i connected the startbutton and brake switch directly but nothing.
I have a 1984 Honda gyro and your video was so good that I fixed the issue. Thanks for your help.
All this time all I needed to do was hold the rear brake level on ahaha, thanks for the tip!!
That didn't work for me what should I do
Hello, I have a problem, I have a Peugeot Speedfight 1 100cc that recently seized up/heat seized.
Regards
Andree.
Hi garret love your videos very informative
Ive got an issue with my smc 50cc starts and idles no problem will rev up on centre stand but is very sluggish and under powered when riding any ideas ???been told could be Possible variator issue
Maybe you could do us a little video regards lee

This video, coupled with another from the same guy, I narrowed the issue down to a DCI component issue. My scooter runs, but have to Kickstart it first. So this video got my bike going again. Awesome video. Very helpful
Thanks...you are a great teacher. :)

Thank you for accurate diagram about how the left switch is is part of the electrical system that controls starting.

Happy to hear it, mine definitely is !
It's an 05 PGO mybubu, 125cc and it's not really making any cranking sound at all? When I try the kick start I can hear it try to turn the motor over a tiny bit but otherwise, nothin. I know it worked very recently, as I just bought it and the seller rode it up for about 20 miles w no issues on the kick start, and he kick started it in front of me before I bought it too, so I'm thinkin I must be doing /something/ wrong!

If I can start scooter with screwdriver tauching starter reley than the problem is starter reley???
If you tested the switch and the brake with a tester and everything lit up that would be the starter relay

Hey Garrett I like your sense of humor and your wisdom I did as you said in the video in regard to my starter button not starting. I pulled the right brake lever and push the starter button in at the same time and my 86 Honda Spree nq50 started right up I was really happy I don't have to kick-start no more the carburetor is brand new. to start the scooter I would spray starter fluid in the carburetor just to get it to start on the first three kicks now thanks to your help and your video I just pulled the right brake lever pushed in the starter button at the same time and my scooter started up on the first try without starter fluid I'm a Believer in your videos appreciate your help keep up the great work I am now a subscriber to your Channel Thanks Again!

Great stuff and very good and clear video recordings.
