Your lectures have become part of my spiritual growth. HaShem uses our interests to relate to us. If I were an ornithologist, birds would be used. I am interested in Jewish history. So these lectures are gold to me.
So glad the series is back! “As if it were not enough to do away with the laws of the Romans daily, the Emperor (Justinian)also exerted himself to destroy the traditions of the Jews. For whenever in their calendar Passover came before the Christian Easter, he forbade the Jews to celebrate it on their proper day, to make then any sacrifices to God or perform any of their customs. Many of them were heavily fined by the magistrates for eating lamb at such times, as if this were against the laws of the State”(Procopius secret history XXVIII). R’ Tzvi Hirsh Chayes understands from this ,that Jews sacrificed the Pesach clandestinely , or when politically possible, at least up until the 6th century. עי׳ שו״ת מהר״ץ חיות סי׳ ב׳
..love it! Aloha ia oukou (love to you all) and syncing-up with family elsewhere (calendar), writing important stuff down, hiding those things in code (poems), and making safe meeting halls sounds like Survival-101 to me..!! 😊🤙🏄☘
Rabbi Abramson - thank you for what you do with your channel. your manner / charm, and your knowledge and intellect are… well, endearing, and very much appreciated. my interests in/around Judaism is fundamentally around civilizations and human behavior… human nature, if you will. I am not Jewish, and the metaphysics and dogma in The Bible (and the T’s, and the Abrahamic derivatives thereof) are for me interesting / intriguing / compelling in terms, again, of the human condition; fears and dreams, impetus to cruelty / ugliness, and the manufacturing of superstition in the service of peace of mind. and while I am not religious - I’ll say that my life experience has been that of Jewish people I know and have known over time - in the States, in Europe, and in Israel - the cultural dimensions are lovely, and (again my personal, limited experience) the practicing among them leaning toward Biblical ‘stories’ as symbolic - parables for social guidance, if I may. this in contrast with fundamentalist postures (principally in the 2 Abrahamic co-opt’ers) that tend to generate the antisocial, ignorant, objectively shitty behaviors around the world (since forever). with respect - Shalom Rabbi Abramson 😊 seanM
Hi Dr. Abramson, I've really enjoyed your lectures on Byzantine Jewry since that subject doesn't seem to receive the same amount of attention as other communities during the same period. Since your lectures have so far mostly focused on Byzantine Palestine during the late antique period, do you plan on covering the history of Romaniote/Byzantine Jews that were in the Balkans and Anatolia? There doesn't seem to be much public scholarship on the topic despite remaining a distinct and fairly large community during the medieval period.
Dear Dr. Abramson, thanks for your very useful and pleasant videos. As also you told in your videos, Merneptah Stele is considered the oldest archaeological finding that directly mentions the existence of the Israelites. On the other hand, there is 130 years older SA GAZ Ideogram in El Amarna Tablets and it refers to a special group of people called or “Habiru” which is interpreted by some as the origin of "Hebrew". Do you give credit to this claim ? Thanks, regards
Thank you for another fascinating talk. You might have mentioned with respect to the synagogue becoming such an important feature of Judaism in the 1st century, that the New Testament frequently describes Jesus preaching in synagogues. In the Gospel of Luke, chap 4, a Synagogue service is described in which Jesus reads the haftarah from Isaiah.
Thanks, Henry, for your interesting reflections on the survival strategies of Judaism, especially the synagogues, in the midst of great persecution. You mentioned how Christianity as a 'daughter religion' also used that same strategy, though primarily calling their assemblies 'ekklesia' or 'churches'. Did the Jewish communities in Hellenistic culture ever use the word 'ekklesia' to describe their synagogues? There is only one place in the New Testament where the churches are called synagogues in the Greek: James 2:2 "Suppose a man comes into your meeting (synagogen) wearing a gold ring and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in." Why do you think, Henry, that the Christian assemblies primarily used the word 'ekklesia' rather than 'synagogue'?
Apart from the unfriendly legislation, which in antiquity was always hard if not impossible to enforce outside of major urban centres, how exactly were Jews ignoring Constantinople edicts persecuted? Were they thrown to the lions? Enslaved? Transported? Dispossessed? Deplatformed? Do we have surviving ancient literature on the topic?
1:33 I noticed that many American Jews, even "religious", keep apologizing for their existence and trying to keep "all parties" (except themselves) happy. Do they feel threatened?
Don't be amazed we got this far. You have good content. Maybe you're amazed because you're used to telling it to an audience of students forced to take your course for credits. It's a shame. Good content plus real students exists on UA-cam and not usually in the classroom!
This could be a good thing for religious Christians, as well, to study; though it all comes down to God. “ Cease striving, trying on your own strength, solely…Be still…and know that I am God. I will be exalted in the earth, I will be exalted among the heathen.” Psalm 46
Julian supported Judaism against Christianity because the basic economical revolution brought by Christianity was the abolishing of animal sacrifices. He thus supported all 'traditional' religions which did practice sacrifices, including Judaism.
As a non-Jew I follow your talks with great interest. This was fascinating and I especially admire the clear and concise way you described the original meaning of “Palestine” which I try to share whenever I can. Thank you and best wishes from Australia
History is only as accurate as the sources that are cited. In the treatise, Kabbalah of RAVAD, he puts the compilation of the Mishnah in 189 of our Common Era, or what was called by him 3638 anno mundi. Reb Abramson, Jewish history is broad, and I wish you the best of success in writing your other two books. Since Jewish history transcends Europe, one would, I suppose, be remiss if he only presented Jewish history from a Eurocentric perspective, and he ignored Jewish history, let's say, in Yemen and in Arabia, especially in the Middle Ages
Overall great video! However, recent research has uncovered that the Romans did not rename Judea to Palestina after the Philistines, as the Philistines were in historical reality, not the super villains they have been made out to be. In actuality, it was the Judeans who took the fight to the Philistines in Gaza. To the point where Queen Cleopatra III helped the Hasmoneans in 100 BC, take back Gaza after the Maccabees first conquered Gaza in 145 BC. Queen Cleopatra III sent in her best Generals, who were two Jews, who fought a year long battle against her own son in Gaza. Also, please do not excuse the Arab occupiers in Jewish Gaza and the Arab occupiers in Judea & Samaria from stealing the colonizer moniker for Jews IN Israel from 136 AD - 1948. Only Jews for those 1,812 years of occupation in Israel were called Palestinians. It was the antisemtic KGB's Operation SIG which painted Israel as a 'Nazi state' and a 'colonizer' where the term, Palestinians' began to be antisemitically applied to six different Arab groups including a group of genetic Jews in Judea & Samaria who were converted to Islam in the 11th century.

One of your best videos. A clear and concise time line of the development of modern Jewish faith for us non jews! Thank you.

So much of upstate new tork shares the names of the cities on that map at 2:30

Arab Palestinian political entity appropriated the name Palestina as their origin myth in the 20th century.

Please may I ask when we first encountered Lo-Mein?
I went to the shul in Athens a few years ago. All the plaques were in Greek.
16:50 😮 I suspect they read “A Guide for the Perplexed,” instead of the Talmud. 🤷♀️ close enough, right?

Gimme a break. A non Jew cares about the original meaning of Palestine and wants to share it whenever they can.

So you "survived" by violating the laws of the host nation. You broke their rules against organizing and speaking. And you wonder why?
Byzantine?? Right,,,,
