Great playing! For those that don't know Roger Mayer created the first Octave Fuzz effect for Jimi and modified/re-designed Hendrix's fuzz face. That new fuzz is what Hendrix used on the Axis Bold as Love and the Band of Gypsys albums. Roger Mayer still sells these pedals as the Octavia and Axis Fuzz. I really wanted to like these MXR versions (the price is great and I love the pedal board friendly size) but I'm a bit disappointed in the sounds, especially compared to my Roger Mayer Octavio and Axis Fuzz. Andertons, how come you don't sell Roger Mayer Pedals? He's such a historic name and his gear is still made in the UK.

notbadfilms These MXR pedals are really not made with the best transistors. The Fuzz Face and Gypsy can sound ok, but you can play 10 of them and get 10 different sounds or quality levels. The uni-vibe is just a digital circuit.

Holy Shitzel!!! Rabea and Pete . You guys at Andertons give me so much info and great playing. I love you all. But WOW!! Thanks for Philip Sayce. I never heard of him until you guys mentioned him, and I freaking love him. He is right in the vein of artists that inspire me so greatly. Again, Thank you so much for all that you give us.
    Peace and love guys.

Nice pedals and playing. Thanks for the demo. I think the main problem with those fuzzes is that your guitar sound will disappear in the mix every time you kick it in. Perhaps combine them with a mid boost or tube screamer type pedal.

Wah BEFORE fuzz. Listen to Hendrix live, look at pics of hendrix, he always had the wah before the fuzz. Always.
Yes I know wah's and most fuzz pedals don't work well like that, but Hendrix used it as a high treble boost when using a fuzz, to kind of mimic an octavio.

      @KeeperOfPoops 6 років тому

i know Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers but i know more about his lead guitarist Mike Campbell's rig cos i've watched the rundown with his big bearded tech Steve "Chinner" Winstead
he has a 64/65 Gibson SG, a Gretsch Clipper for I Won't Back Down, a 54 Fender Telecaster for Woman In Love and a 59 Fender Telecaster with a B Bender for American Girl, some rickenbackers for free falling, a Rickenbacker Mandolin for Melinda, a 59 Gretsch White Falcon, a Gretsch Tennessean for Rebels, a 64 Gibson Firebird for Running Down A Dream, a 65 Stratocaster for You Wreck Me, a Custom Rickenbacker which is a spare for the SG, a Les Paul for I Should Have Known It, a sitar for Don't Come Around Here No more, a Gibson Acoustic, a Barney Kessel hollowbody for a Muddy Waters track, a Gibson ES175 which is a backup for the Clipper and some Duesenberg guitars including his signature model
his amps are a Fender Princeton and a Fender Deluxe
and his pedals are a Digitech Whammy, a Line 6 Delay, a Way Huge Camel Toe, a Line 6 Chorus and a dunlop classic wah
so i think it should be Gibson SG Fusion £400, Fender Blues JR £565, Line 6 Delay £237, Line 6 Modulator £243
      grand total: £1445

I used to have an original Uni-vibe, which I bought in 1972 and used until it fell apart. While this uni-vibe sounds close to the original, it is missing a detail. The oscillation is too smooth, resembling that of a chorus pedal.
The original, which used a tiny light bulb and an optical sensor, had a kind of slam effect at each end of the cycle that made put a slight bump in to the sine wave at either end.
We should remember that the Uni-vibe was a Leslie simulator. It was not a good one, but it sounded extremely cool. The sound was based on the physical operation of an actual Leslie cab, which had a thin metal horn on top and a traditional up-facing speaker on the bottom. The woofer had a rotating styro baffle floating about an eighth of an inch above the cone (kind of like a wheel of cheese on an upside-down plate with a wedge of cheese missing) . The two were on a spindle that would rotate at one of two speeds. A wired remote was included that you could bolt to the keyboard of your Hammond.
When the horn and cone would spin, there would be a noticeable change in sound when the sound was being projected through the back of the cabinet - a noticeable shift in tone with a slight delay as it would reflect off surfaces behind it. At just the right distance between the cabinet and the studio wall, this would create a kind of "whang-gah" sound instead of the modern digitally controlled "whang" sound. If a modern imitation does not include that "gah" at the end of each cycle, it can have a similar feel but not an identical sound.
The closest modern uni-vibe pedal I've ever used is the TCEletronic Viscous Vibe. In order to make the sound as close to the original (in stereo mode) you need to use the editor to reduce the stereo separation. Note that no pedal can truly recreate the sound of the original

What's annoying about the Hendrix Fuzz Face is there is no info on whether it's a germanium circuit, silicone or digitized. It's only Authentic if it's got an oc44 or equivalent. The gypsues Fuzz should be a BC 108 but what's in them? I can't find anywhere and Dunlop is being very vague.

I HATE fuzz on my Les Paul. The only time I ever use fuzz is with my Strat. Something about single coils gets along with fuzz, whereas humbuckers just don't seem to have that same "bite" or however you'd describe it. They're too thick IMO. I stick with amp distortion on the LP.

That wah sounds 'off' when played together with the Fuzz Face. Was it before or after the fuzz?
If it was before then that would explain it sounding weird. The Fuzz Face needs to be before the wah.

You're right that the wah sounds wrong, but you have it opposite. Wah should always be first after the guitar. Jimi always had guitar directly into wah, then whatever other effects he was using. Distortion before wah gives you that shit volume boost at the bottom of the pedal you hear in this video.

Not so with fuzz pedals. With traditional dirt boxes, yes, they should be after the wah but with fuzzes, it's the opposite.

I have fuzz pedals. You can run it fuzz first, but you still get that shit volume boost thing if you do. It never sounds right, just like in this video. Guaranteed they ran the fuzz before the wah, it's just obvious, and it always sounds "extreme wah" like this video, where when you roll it back the volume dips way back. It's just the way it is.

Jimi played a strat.... Any strat... So the boys used any strats.. Well, a 1964 strat and a custom shop reissue 56 strat... Don't think paint job will make you sound like Jimi, do you??? :-)

Not at all! Those were killer guitars to say the least and even better players. Thought the whole Jimi setup would be cool to show off two "new" products in one.... anything beats my Squier strat and Fender Mustang v2 so I can't compare.

You can see why having another (audible) guitarist in the band was a non-starter for Hendrix, quite apart from the talent issue. With these kind of effects any competition in the mid range turns it to mud. Hell, there were times when even the bass was working more as a kick drum than as a melodic element.
