    I think it's a big stretch to claim that real life planets are confirmed. I don't think that's what he implies in the interview at all. He talks of their size in "game concept" being really big, so it's definitely more of the feel/impression/illusion that they are huge when you play, not about the actual square miles of a planet. I think it's gonna be more like how Skyrim is a representation of a big country and feels like it when you traverse it, or the Imperial City being a large city, but that they are definitely scaled down representations of "the real thing", and Starfield planets will definitely be scaled in accordance to that philosophy.

      Plus, whether it's trully real life sized or not doesn't matter. Once you have the procedural generation running, it works for any size. It's like saying "Minecraft worlds are real life sized", it's not wrong if you get rid of the artificial 30M x 30M blocks limit but it doesn't have any impact.

    The iceballs, or fireballs, i'm sure there's many of them. Exploring them, knowing you probably won't find much (if anything), is just that, exploration. It's quite literally exploring the unknown, which can be fun if the rest of the gameplay mechanics are on point. I'm not worried either, not about this anyway. The things I'm worried about is NPC interaction and combat.

      it makes me wonder if there will be planets that are wastelands but we will see lost civilizations architecture dotted across the landscape and maybe as the player we can uncover that the people of the planet attempted to do an mass migration to underground tunnels that lead near the core of the planet to survive the planet becoming colder and discover a civilization living in the core of the planet as a sort of paradise, like the center of the earth novels.
      and maybe the people who survived have little to no knowledge of where they came from because many of the elders died off during the migration in protecting their young, causing a situation where the knowledge was lost to the significant population, but then finding out that the core of the planet is also in a stage of dying and it's up to the player to save them from what would be their ultimate demise if they don't leave and relocate to another planet.
      but then say while people are being saved, pirates attack your ship in orbit and it's up to you and your crew to save the people and survive the onslaught, but perhaps the game offers other options to resolve the situation based on your rank within that system or perhaps it's another alien race who attacks who do not negotiate and it becomes a dogfight.

    That's the second or third time I've heard Todd Howard say "I know our games take a long time to make and I wish there was a way to get them out faster." I'm glad to hear him at least recognize the fact that there are insanely long gaps between games. Especially now that BGS has came out with a new IP (Starfield). I do think that BGS needs to expand so they can get their games out faster but at the same time there are already several studios within XBOX that BGS could hand off one of the IPs to. Especially the Fallout IP, since Obsidian, Inxile and Bethesda are all sister studious under Microsoft Xbox.

    • @The_fahadkhan
      @The_fahadkhan 2 роки тому +2

      It's a no-brainer. BGS is now Xbox's de-facto number one first party studio. Phil Spencer must surely realize that he can not let an IP as big as Fallout or Elder Scrolls just rest for 10-15 years. He should do everything in his power to expand BGS from around 400-500 employees to around 1000 employees within the next 2-3 years. Then they can split BGS into two AAA teams of around 400-500 and work on two AAA projects at the same time.

      @@olivercharles2930 Im not talking about rushing games. Also, when im talking about more employees, i dont mean that there should be one team on 1000 people. They should slowly expand the team and their long-term goal should be to have two big core BGS teams which can each work on separate projects. This way the fans wouldn't have to wait 15 years between elder scrolls and fallout games atleast. Yes, the game development time would still be the same (around 5-6 years per game) but atleast they'll have two games in development at a time rather than one.

    You hearing "real life sized planets confirmed" from what Todd said is surprising enough, but I am even more surprised at all the people here who also interpreted it that way (or just didn't even bother to listen and only read the title).
    Here is what Todd said:
    "We do a lot of procedural generation but I would keep in mind that we've always done that. And a planet by itself - if you think about it it - is sort of in a game concept: just one planet is infinitely big if you're gonna do it in some realistic fashion. So once you're dealing with scale like that in procedural systems the difference between, say, one planet and a hundred planet or a thousand planet is actually not that big of a leap, if that makes sense. Once you have good systems working for that."
    (I wrote down what he said, grammar and cohesion is on him)
    So yes, planets have to feel "infinitely big" if you want to make it feel somewhat "realistic". No, he did not literally promise real life sized planets.

    I like that the spaceships seem to have something like blasters on them, similar to Star Wars. For realism, I'd expect more physical ammo, like explosives or 50-caliber bullets on the vehicles, but the blaster, with heated gas plasma-like shots, doesn't seem like a big stretch for a game 300 years in the future. That comment on "old Earth" sounded like a hint to me, implying that the reason for humanity leaving Earth is that the world was either destroyed in some way or badly depleted, necessitating leaving the planet. This would make sense when you consider that in reality, colonizing other worlds is mostly agreed upon as not allowed, but if Earth stopped being habitable enough, colonizing and potentially terraforming other places would be a solution. This would lead to humans spreading across many worlds for survival, and Constellation is probably going to be a very powerful organization, with so many people wanting to know what's around, for curiosity, safety concerns, or whatever other reason.

      The only legal arrangements about bodies outside Earth are a treaty that countries cannot make territorial claims on bodies in space, which was ratified by the US, and another which says extraterrestrial resources are the "common heritage of mankind", which the US Senate has (wisely) NOT ratified. Technically, there is no law against colonies on other planets (in the sense portrayed in science fiction, in the historical sense of a "colony of France", for instance, the first treaty mentioned would have to be renegotiated), and the laws on resource ownership need to be updated to something like a corporate "homestead law", if only to allow for Earth/space trade, but also to put investment on a sound legal footing. Almost everybody who thinks at all about colonies in space or on planets is for the idea, I don't know where you got the idea it was forbidden "in reality". There are some who think it can never happen (there are always folks like that at every stage of development), but I have never heard of it being illegal, or even frowned upon by consensus.

    I think this interview has put *some* of my qualms about Starfield to rest, tbh. It sounds like the 1000 planets thing is mainly just to make the universe feel more 'real', and since they're going with a NASA vibe, it's natural to have a bunch of basically empty planets. I think you missed mentioning it in this video, but at some point in the interview he says something to the effect of "once we developed the technology to make a whole planet, it's not that much extra work to tweak the numbers and generate a thousand more", which is fairly understandable. (He's also said in previous interviews that they're very aware of the fact that people are still playing Skyrim even a decade later, which they never really expected, and that they've been designing Starfield with that sort of longevity and replayability in mind. If that's true then it sounds like they've really taken some of the fan feedback to heart).
    I think as long as they can put one or two interesting things on the *not-barren* worlds and kinda nudge you to land in the right place to find them, then I think it'll be fun to be able to fly off the trail so to speak. Having the main story and the majority of the game will take place across only a handful of locations and planets is the right choice, in that regard too. I think what I was most afraid of was the radiant questing system being combined with the thousand worlds to create infinitely boring content. It does at least leave a huge open canvas for modders to fill, but I hope they don't lean on modders too much to sell their game.
    Having said all that, it's probably still going to be a *buggy mess* on launch, even with the delay!

    I'm not too worried about the procedural generation. You have your map of your location like the closed maps that we've had so far, but you have the edges plug into the procedural map allowing you to walk off of it into the rest of the world. You outline the basic geography of the planet, where the mountains are and such, and then pace your points of interest and theoretically you can just walk from one point to the other, even if they are opposite sides of the continent. I'm just curious if we will be able to place procedural generators inside the generator. Using a system similar to Sim Settlements I wonder if we could mod in procedural generated settlements/outposts/hideouts/towns as we cross the landscape.
    But the thing I'm going to be happy about is that we will be able to mod places everywhere. You just know that as soon as this game comes out, somebody is going to try to mod in the planet Nirn.

    • @elijahmatthias
      @elijahmatthias 2 роки тому +1

      I believe the style of procedural generation that is used in this game isn’t a “generated as you play,” type of procedural generation. The style used here is more of a “we used procedural generation to build the world, and then added on top of that, but the world that is there is the same content for everyone.” Think more like Skyrim and fallout 4, and not so much like Minecraft or no man’s sky. In Minecraft and NMS the worlds are individual to the player and are generated on the spot. In Skyrim and fallout much of the landscape itself was generated procedurally during development, and then the world was saved as such, and then added on top of from there. Thus Creating a world that is locked in, and the same for everyone, but some of the events that go on in game were at random due to the systems set in place. I’m not sure if Bethesda has ever used on the spot procedural generation to insert things like dungeons or not, it could be cool, but my understanding is that this was more so just to build the slate that they had to work with, and that we have to explore after it has been touched up by Bethesda.

      While there advantages where you can have more land and create it faster, you lose some big advantages as a developer. I am a world builder for my own small studio team, and procedural generation can really take away from your own game’s uniqueness and look. Sure, it’s easier, but if you handcraft a world, I can tell stories with the world itself. I don’t just fill the world with my stories, but both are one and the same! 😁

    • @KingBuffo
      @KingBuffo 2 роки тому

      So for the elder scrolls, I personally hope that they handcraft their world if it means a world with focal points and design choices that cause it to stand out - consider the greybeards’ mountain in Skyrim which acts as a sort of beacon to figure where you are, or in real life, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, where you can always tell where you by seeing the mountains

I'm also all for some dungeons being designed from start to finish. But there are some dungeons that just sort of there with no real story to tell other than dungeon with monsters outside of maybe a few items left here or there. So when designing a "just there" dungeon and only dungeons the location for a few dungeons would play out differently every time.
      For instance take the Barrow across from Windhelm where the one son of Ysgramor is buried. Imagine the opening room, the final room, and the riddle room being the same, but there's several new rooms and hallways each time with slightly different threats as you proceed.

I think ppl are assuming that there is 15 planets with a ton of content handcrafted and the procedural generated planets have no content, but i think in reality its more like 15 content dense planets, 500 with procedurally generated content like quests and encounters and a small amount of handcrafted sprinkled in, and 500 dead/resource worlds.
    Just because the majority of the planets are procedural, and wont have handcrafted content, doesnt mean necessarily that they wont have any content at all, you can procedurally generate content too, not deep stories of course, but with a handful of quest templates, 50 ish encounters, a bunch of aliens and a bunch of pirate outposts and possibility for variation in each of those things all this combined and interacting with each other would create quite a lot of stuff to do on the procedurally generated planets.

      I can understand the worry you have with he is just exaggerating or something, but I kinda don't have any worries about if the "1000-ish planets to explore" will be true simply because if Hello Games, a company with less than 30 people, can create a galaxy with procedural generation that is entertainable enough for at least 10 or so planets, then I'm pretty sure Bethesda with their 200+ employees can do the same quality at the least, and probably better, especially if it's on a scale that isn't trying to account for a million or so planets. My only worries are pertaining to the bugs and performance issues the game could have, which the fact Bethesda is actually delaying should give a bit more confidence they are really trying, but I still worry about it

    12:27 it is so odd that even after being brought by Microsoft they still have the same issue of long development lifecycles I would have thought since being brought by Microsoft they can expand grow their existing teams into subsidiary studios that really does not seem to be the case huh and if you can't grow those teams from within then at least get some of the other support studios to help them develop those games like Halo Infinite who had not only 343 industries working on that game but also Certain Affinity and Skybox Labs or games like COD where there had at least 6 different studios working together on the last few cod projects!! I feel like there should be some proper communication between the Microsoft and its subsidiaries like Bethesda in creating new games and allocating sufficient amount of resources in the creation of said game but it doesn't feel like that is the case.

      They were already making the game pre buy so they might not want to change stuff until it’s out just to make things simpler.

      @@KamiEneru okay perhaps maybe not with starfield I am more or less fine with that but tes 6 and fallout 5 for sure right? Like all they need to do is run support for the game making process anything is Bethesda can do on the day their own like for example story, lore and game elements..

    I’m just hoping you can manually fly your ship through atmospheres and travel to the next planet. That’s imperative to me. The feeling of entering or leaving a planet is so unique … if we cannot do that, it won’t feel like a space game to me.

    Big empty maps are not fun. BGS has always been known for large, dense worlds. The density is what makes the exploration so rewarding. You’re not walking for hours in a desolate landscape without seeing something of note.

      Daggerfall had the biggest world map in gaming before Minecraft came out. Bethesda only started doing smaller, denser world's when Todd Howard started at the company and made TES Adventures: Redguard and even then they didn't prefect the formula until 2002's TES 3: Morrowind released
