I laughed at that one too! The number of sockets I bought specifically to work on my E46 boggles the mind. Anyone who has taken off the gearbox knows the plethora of different bolts used for one task. I also hate the fact, that getting to the handbrake backing plate requires a forced wheel bearing replacement, as you can't get the hub out without destroying the bearing...
@The Emperor ah, the great 80's. Wise choice. Although I never really worked on my E21 or my E30, I think that they should have been workable with a more basic set of tools. Frankly, if I want to wrench for fun, I have my Volvo Amazon for that.
German cars usually use odd-numbered sizes, i.e. 13, 15, 17, 19. Japanese vehicles tend to use even-numbered, i.e. 12,14, 16. I'd wager the 16mm was from the swap rather than factory. I hope they got a snag when they bought their Bunnings bolt.

If I remember correctly it's because all engines above 2,000cc were in a much more expensive tax bracket. Ferrari also sold a 2 liter V8 in the 70's.
Portugal also received the E30 320is, same engine as M3 but detuned
@@FOXeye95 that was the Italian and Portuguese version. While it was an S14, it had smaller displacement than the M3 (normally 2.3L)
The 318is did not have a related engine despite sharing the "is" suffix.
@@daszieher sadly yea, 318is is m42 like e36
@@FOXeye95 Don't know how would they detuned 2.5L 4 cylinders 200HP to 2.0L 4 cylinders 192HP. I think it was whole new engine
YES YES YES THATS MY CAR!!
I am hyped for this project!!
Did you sell it to them??
@@richieb7692 no way lol
Finally, been waiting for a BMW one day on here
SAME
"They one engine mount is a 16mm and the other is a 17mm, I can't imagine the Germans would do that from the factory"
Clearly never worked on a BMW before
I laughed at that one too!
@@daszieher all the sockets not to mention all the torques bits and the specialty tools like the fan clutch removal tool
@The Emperor ah, the great 80's. Wise choice.
Although I never really worked on my E21 or my E30, I think that they should have been workable with a more basic set of tools.
Frankly, if I want to wrench for fun, I have my Volvo Amazon for that.
@@MrMcTavishOBS Actually you can work with basic tools on these older German cars. Basic here in europe 😆
My friend and I just finished a swap on my e36 limo. I went from m43b16 to m52b28 from a e39... it was a *journey* .
Now it's fast as fuck tho
The euro handshake caught me off guard, chuckled a bit...
Get an e46 steering rack. Close to bolt-on and much faster than e30 rack.
Purple tag rack
The later E46 racks are half a turn shorter than the earlier ones and therefore even more fun.
Get ready to suffer

lets do the euro handshake together xD
I cannot believe all the way from Mackay QLD my old car has gotten to you guys. Been a fan for many years. This is surreal. Haha I owned this car in May.
How far back did you own this car?
Did you sell it to them, or was there another owner in between?
You owned this? Tell us some history .
did you do the swap?
Was it blue still or did you paint it ?
do tell!!
I sold it to the person they bought it off. The swap was done by the previous owner before me who imported from Japan.
I owned this car in May this year, sold it to a bloke in NSW
@@harrison2870 amazing. Does it smell of cigarettes and tofu?
Finally, a BMW! I have been waiting for this moment for almost a decade! I hope you will like it.
I'm obligated as a fellow E30 owner to tell you about the fantastic site RealOem.com, you will finde exploded views and parts list for ALL parts of the car and any other BMW. Let us know if there is anything you can't get a hold of down under and we will make sure to find it for you!
I really liked the bit of different camera work in this episode! It may not seem like it but some of us really notice and appreciate that stuff! Excited to see more of the e30, cheers!
“They used a 16MM on one side and a 17MM on the other side...I can’t imagine the Germans did that from factory”
Oh you boys are gonna learn about the Germans lmaoooo
The germans knew you wouldnt have 2 16mm spanners! Haha
Still easier than a Porsche with their different parts for the same car on different build years... urgh
BMWs are like Lego
I used to laugh at the joke about German Engineering, "They build the perfect part... then cut it into three pieces and bolt it back together." Then I had the rear shock come loose on my VW Thing. The shock rod had unscrewed from a separate piece that bolted through the cupped washers and bushings. Why a separate threaded stud-nut on the end of a threaded rod only a German engineer could explain.
@@honorharrington4546 oh believe me, I’ve only driven bmws for the last 8 years, every single day I see something that makes me wonder what the fuck is going on during Oktoberfest

Theyve hinted at k24 swapping recently, thats my guess. Theres plenty of them around in Australia it just seems very likely

I'm calling it a 2JZ is going in, it's a BMW so it's meme worthy, they are calling for it being super fast, "trans goes the right way" and MCM needs to add some JDM purity haha
Im gonna guess and say k24/20 with s2000 box. Such a light chassis and 2jz is on the heavy side and a bit over kill really.

My E30 I just bought didn’t make it home, timing belt snapped. Happy E30 ownership !

Aye love the vids. This is why e34 (m5) is the answer!
Funny thing is, my friend had the same accident with his first e30
Timing belt snapped on the second day of ownership. His second M20 engine is now toast too xD
lost ine the same way. beautiful car
Thought for sure they were getting an e34 when I saw the book a while back. What do you think is going in? M5x? Hoping for an m60 but that ain't happening. Do something with your girls e28 man...
Ahh Haynes manuals... Nice to see they Still exist!
Yeah. I got one with my Sidekick when i got it. There really cool to have.
Legend has it if you’re this early MCM will heart your comment
My God, the legend is true!?
A heads up for the next time and any other BMW - Remove the front end. It is absurdly easy to do. And just slide the engine out, together with gearbox.
I'm fairly sure you can't do that on E30s... they're welded in place, although it is possible on many later models.
@@ThaMythbuster they are just spot welds, easily drillable. Converting the radiator frame to bolts is even better, especially, if the need/want comes to adjust panel gaps for perfect front end fit.
Thats is what i was thinking :) They might do that until they need to install the new engine.
Anyone remember that time they lowkey teased this like a year ago with the handbook they had for a e30
FWD K24-shredder conversion, chop off the roof behind the front seats and make it a ute #bimmerute
K swapped E30?! 🤞 Suuurely.
Omfg! Have been waiting years for a BMW project! And you grab the best one yet! Just got an e30 myself recently, a 318i with an M42B18 (4cyl 1.8 liter 103kw) swap, weighs just about 1100kg, and once its up and running should be very fun. Yours is much cleaner tho!
A mate of mine has a m44 with home made turbo setup in his e46, quite fun if you ever get bored of the NA life
My design Edition touring also has that engine. Best. Daily. Ever. It loves the revs!
Enjoy it my friend! 😎👌
@@snape1464 sounds awesome! That might be an option, but far into the future. Would maybe even consider a supercharger off an old Mercedes or something
@@ZeroGravityShisha that's what I've heard too! Also, got to love the touring, the slot in the trunk for the beer crate is enough of a reason to buy one, haha
The e30 msport is still one mean looking machine. One of my favourites, cant wait to see what engine is going in. Hope its turbo'd 🤤
Swap a Euro S50 and gearbox and E36 M3 steering rack and call it a day 🤪
Finally, you bought yourself an ultimate driving machine.
I have been waiting for you all to do one of these for a while now glad to see it happen! I just pulled my m20 b27 out of a 1986 325e yesterday in preparation for a v12 swap. but can’t wait to see what you guys have in store for it! E30s FTW HAPPY CHOPPING!
You guys hinted at this car earlier, I've been waiting ever since
The music is always great in these videos. Nice editing too.. And such a beautiful car, the E30!
They're gonna drop an STI motor in this think I can feel it. The "grandmas pie" reference makes me think of super gramps and Idk it just seems perfect.
Are we placing bets on the engine?
I’m going in with: N54 3L twin turbo out of 335i 😜
Nah man its clearly a jz or rb

"I can't imagine the Germans doing that from the factory" Oh my sweet, summer child.
*laughs in torx*
The old M10 nuts/bolts wrench size mismatch.
DIN calls for 17mm, ISO calls for 16mm.
We had a mixed bag of nuts in our machine shop, don't tell my boss I arranged every single one of the few goddam 16mm nuts a one-way trip right to the fuckit buckit.
There's no way they'd have done that on an E30. Germans overcomplicate things, yes, but they're also extremely OCD about shit like that, I've noticed.
