    So many people commenting without watching the full video. He's not instructing, he's acting as a safety pilot and they are testing a device for training how to respond to IMC conditions. He has a CPL H, and is perfectly qualified to act as a safety pilot.

    I'm curious about the discussion that ensued when Greg encountered the inadvertent IMC. From my perspective you have two options. First, you can take immediate action to regain VFR (descend, IF SAFE to do so or turn back.) Failing that, I THINK the only reasonable option is the one Greg took. Climb and declare an emergency as soon as you've established good instrument control. If you're in the clouds without a clearance, it's either an emergency or a violation....and I think we all prefer the former :o). I've had this happen to me a couple of times on SAR missions, flying fixed wing in marginal weather, and practicing in advance like you guys are doing here really helps. I have found that ATC is pretty understanding when you are doing something important (like SAR) and you get yourself into the crud inadvertently. I like this electronic "hood" a lot. Is it something relatively affordable? My own organization might be convinced to get one for the troops to use. Great video! Thanks, Mover!
    Edit: When you initiate that climb, my theory of the situation is to go to the lowest safe VFR altitude, because ATC won't likely have IFR traffic assigned there. You could still hit an aircraft that is climbing or descending, but a VFR altitude will likely give you more time to get a plan together without much danger of a collision.

    • @brodricj3023
      @brodricj3023 2 роки тому

      There is no such thing as a lowest safe VFR altitude. You are either under the VFR where you see and avoid obstacles and terrain visually, or you are not. If you are not VFR you must be at or above the lowest safe altitude for that sector unless you are carrying out a published procedure. This is where pilots screw up a lot, when they try to mix VFR and IFR under some hybrid rules of their own making that do not exist.
      EDIT: I think you are suggesting climb to a VFR cruising altitude, al-be-it in cloud, right? Maybe, that's legal once you declare an emergency you can do whatever you want.

    Spent about half my instrument training on this device pre-launch beta. It was a breath of fresh air for someone like me who doesn't like the whole transition to foggles. This is way more immersive. I appreciate my school for seeing the benefit and investing in the development of this product. Very much looking forward to my CFII with it. Thanks for the video Mover. This is great content.

    I like the conversations between fellow pilots about how they might react given different stressful situations while in the air. Simulating what IFR could do to you while discussing with other pilots, can only help each other by exploring ideas and sharpening how they might think to approach those situations. That should help when y'all ACTUALLY talk to your certified flight instructors about the instructed ways to deal with those scenarios vs what pilots think are the right things to do. ;) Thanks for sharing this, Mover!

    I'd just mention, during the 2nd instrument approach the pilot said she would use a higher MDA than published. If I'm not mistaken 200' was briefed by Mover as the MDA and I think the pilot nominated not below 300' in her approach brief. I don't think this is a good plan. Firstly, it's not giving you the best opportunity to get VFR if you are staying 100' higher than the MDA. And secondly, the practical test standard requires you to be no higher than 50' above the MDA at the MAPT. If she only got to 300' at MAPT that would be a fail on a check ride. I was pleased to hear of fuel/endurance by the 2nd pilot in the plan for IIMC, the 1st pilot made no mention of fuel in his IIMC plan. And finally, nobody mentioned the chartered LSALT during their IIMC action plan. You should climb to LSALT at Vbroc on IIMC, not to some random height of your choosing. Mover was pretty good in his role on this sortie.

    • @evlgamr
      @evlgamr 2 роки тому

      There is nothing wrong with having higher minimums than the published ones. Most commonly yes, this would be a decision that you make on the ground looking at whatever the conditions are wind, ceilings, proximity of severe whether or what not. But this scenario is definitely not for the perspective of an IFR current pilot flying a current tech IFR equipped aircraft. This was for someone with no instrument training or as Stephanie seemed to indicate, no currency and rusty skills. That lack of willingness to push it to the limits could be the difference between life and death in a real situation. Its apparent that both of these HCSO pilots have IFR training...Mover didnt have to explain anything to them and they more or less could fly the approaches but I don't get the feeling they were current (or the bird certified or itself current for it maybe).

    • @brodricj3023
      @brodricj3023 2 роки тому

      @@evlgamr Not getting to MDA might keep you in a life or death IIMC situation. Get to MDA, get visual, is the safest option. As I mentioned, 100' above MDA on an IFR check ride is a fail.

    • @CWLemoine
      @CWLemoine  2 роки тому +1

      You can have higher minimums than published. The Air Force does this. 700-2, 500-1.5, 300-1 based on experience. MDA is also for a non-precision approach (non-ILS in airline speak), a precision approach would use decision height/decision altitude - which is what they were doing. You can certainly decide to go around early. No, you won't fail a checkride.

    • @brodricj3023
      @brodricj3023 2 роки тому

      @@CWLemoine The FAA ATP PTS pass/fail criteria, at the MAPT you must be at the MDA -0 > +50' tolerance. The examiner is not going to give you better weather than that. In any event, if IIMC you want to be at the MDA and not above (or below) it at the MAPT to get visual. It's silly doing a GA just because you are 100' higher than you might otherwise be to get out of IIMC. The best plan to find VMC once establish on an approach is always to get to MDA as early as possible on the final approach profile. But if you've declared an emergency you can do whatever you want, of course.
