My ''factory authorized'' Cub dealer is beyond pathetic. I watch Taryl and then tell the guy what's wrong and how to fix it. Numb nuts still can't do it. I'd pay a bundle to have someone like Taryl around. Thank you Taryl. I can fix it myself now.

@@oxyfee6486 12 bucks? Good Grief! My Cub is under warranty. The Cub is good for the price but a bonehead dealer makes it suck and destroys the Cubs reputation. I found one problem that I'll fix because it' one bolt. Another problem is under 40 bucks. Good deal being able to fix it yourself.

This entire family is so very talented. Taryl is a genius in many ways. The level of production and the entertainment value of their presentations make them educational and very entertaining. I too would greatly enjoy meeting them and taking my mower to be fixed there. When my old 6.75 Briggs on my Toro finally gives up - I am going to take a trip to see them and have it rebuilt!! Ya it is 12 years old cranks every time by the 2nd pull and yeah i am keeping it till i go to the great lawn in the sky...

I'm thinking of doing a little at a small shop at my house, just so I can fulfill the urge of needing to do something. Love your work, a mechanic doing it right, the way I do every task I tackle. Do it right or do it twice. Sometimes they surge until put under a load.
Love Taryl’s channel! He has saved me (and by extension) my neighbors a ton of money over this past year!! Lawn mower engine problems (valve clearance was off), snow blower problems (one bad carbetrater and 1 bad auger belt), carbetrater on a Stihl chainsaw, fuel lines on a line trimmer and a rebuild of a Husqvarna backpack leaf blower (carbetrater again - I didn’t take good care of my stuff until Taryl’s videos). Highly detailed “how to” videos mixed with comedy??? Yes Please! Keep ‘em coming Taryl!
At 55:40; that is exactly what happened to me when rebuilding a GX120 recently. Found the cap on the floor, and remembered this video. Had no idea it had fallen off until then, and would have had me stumped. Appreciate the insight Taryl - you saved me on that one!
I don't know who agrees with me, but, Taryl is a DANG GOOD TEACHER!..................I'm almost 60 and had the mentality that old dogs can't be taught new tricks. I've been running a mid-sized Landscape construction Co for the past 35yrs I really wish Taryl and shop were in a town near us in Mass. His great knowledge and work ethic make's his shop a rarity these day's.
I am a mechanic but i must say that i really appreciate the way this man simplifies some jobs that honestly reading a manual can even lose me especially with hydrostatic pumps.

Many of the procedures and techniques you showed in this video I would work and work to instill in my students in recip. class and lab. Great job. I taught for aviation mechanics for 49 years. Well, this one cracked me up! Well done Taryl, Junior and the imaginary twins. Yep, even the good old Ford Kent series engines could throw up a few wild geese as well, but, it also led to some interesting permutations that in turn led to some potent little variants of an otherwise innocuous engine.

Great video. Very informative and appreciate you showing us what to look out for and avoid when working on small engines. Especially appreciate the end where you encountered surging - common issue these days as the eggheads in Washington prescribe emissions requirements that force stupid decisions. If I had a nickel for every snowblower an owner kept the choke on to eliminate surging I'd have several dollars. Not enough to quit but enough for another beer. 😁
Seal-all is also good for stopping up pinholes in Briggs fuel tanks where the dimple below the carb in take is. Just dry the tank and pour in a blob of Seal-all. It'll level itself out. Let it dry and go to work. I just let a tank on a 5-horse Briggs on a wood splitter skin over in stead of harden all the way. Hasn't leaked yet. Has saved several tanks for me. Good stuff!

Hey taryl, first things first, thank for you an hour long video that probably took you guys 10 hours to cut & edit for us, we have nothing but gratitude for that. The first thing I wanted to say is, if you didn’t FFW’d thru the simple things and we could just hear you talk & complain, I think most of your viewers would love to watch what you guys might consider dead weight that should be cut. I know nothing about videography or UA-cam’s uploading platform so ignore my ignorance if that’s something y’all do to abide by digital constraints. The 2nd thing is, I just stripped out a newer Lexus (eBay parts) and wanted to drain the fuel tank before scrapping the shell. I have both a hand pump/Siphon pump as well as an 18V royobi battery electric transfer pump. I’m too lazy to hand pump 15 gals, and I don’t like the idea of the amount of fumes and the gasoline itself going thru an electrical pump while operating in fear of accident ignition. This tank is off a modern car and has a series of EPA regulated breathers and fume evaporation/recycling chambers and tubes so there’s multiple areas where gasoline is evaporating from the tank to the point where I can see the visual distortions if I hold one of those hoses in front of my face. I have them plugged off with the fingers off rubber gloves. Not working great. That pump that you use (and sell on your store) do you think that would be appropriate for gasoline? This isnt the first time I’ve been stuck with this issue, and the fact that the battery, impeller and hose connections are so close in proximity in my 18V royobi transfer, I don’t trust that there’s no chance of ignition. The one you use seems to have a large separation between all those separate mechanisms. If/when you have time, let me know what you think about that. Is the one you use manual pneumatic or electrically operated? I know you can’t tell me directly that I can and should suck petrol with your pump, but is it something that you’ve felt comfortable doing, I know you deal with a crap ton of old gas in customers rigs. Thanks in advance & keep up the good work

Thanks for the great video. At 33:50 you say the two rings about the oil carrier (I think thats what it is) are to be 90 degrees apart, however if the gaps go from wrist pin to wrist pin they would be 180 degrees apart. Also for the 3rd and 4th rings, they are 180 degrees apart, not 90. All the gaps should be somwhere at 12 oclock, 3 oclock, 6 oclock and 9 oclock. You installed them right, the narrative is incorrect.
This is old superstition anyway. Compression rIngs rotate while the engine operates. Engine manufacturers no longer waste time on staggering gaps on the assembly line. The 3 piece oil ring mostly rotates as an assembly so we worry more about not having the two oil rails lined up.
Crisscross make ya say run! Grassrats make ya say run! Taryl Dactal make ya say run! Run! Run! Run! Ps mr dactal that thick gasket was for the taller piston. You used the wrong gasket! Have a Dixon 4515b ZTR that we've owned for about 5 years or so. During this winter I have basically rebuilt the entire mower including the Briggs 15.5hp Vanguard 28Q777 engine. The whole mower is now done, but it keeps throwing the Drive Belt _(from engine to mower hydrostatic pumps)._ Electric clutch is fine, which that really only concerns the mower deck. This Drive Belt is not that old, bought it not long before I began the rebuild. There are two idler pulleys, one is fixed the other is spring tension and the bolt that holds it is also a rear engine mount bolt. I removed the spring tensioner pulley with entire arm. Saw your video of repairing the arm so I filed it down so the sleeve sticks out a bit when tight, also added a grease zerk etc, now it moves freely like it supposed to when torqued. All pulleys feel smooth and are not bent. Spring is not stretched and is a job to get back to where it goes. Yet it still throws the drive immediately upon engine start. I'm going to buy another belt just to eliminate it. But Any other ideas?? Thanks
well... after 3 days of the drive belt jumping off instantly after engine start. I took the belt this morning. Looked nearly new, no wear spots nothing. Thought it had to be a pulley then. Reinstalled belt exactly as I had it before. Turned engine over by hand, fine. Cranked engine with key, belt ran true, still fine. Started up the engine, still fine. Let mower back down off jack stands, restarted engine, still fine. Took mower out and drove all over the yard, still fine. Turned on the PTO for blades, mowed some winter grass up and down making turns etc, Worked perfectly. The only thing we did different was my Dad prayed for it and asked the Heavenly Father to make it run. Which I should have done that first. In any case, *Thank the Heavenly Father Yahuah* the mower is done. All I got left is to adjust the brake a bit, and fine tune one of the hydrostats and its ready for spring. Only reason I spent all winter to rebuild our old Dixon is because we didn't have the money to buy a new zero turn. And with our property our regular mower takes half a day or so to mow, as I have make pass after pass trying to get around trees and other stuff.

Thanks for the info on how to look up parts. Sadly, propartsdirect did not have my Briggs engine listed but I was able to find ereplacementparts and get the correct piston assembly and gasket kit for my mower. It's a 2016, so most parts are out of stock.
Nice work Taryl! You're my fav fix it channel on youtube! I'm a mechanical engineer and always learn something in your video's, plus they are hilarious! I've been watching for years...you should have 10M subs by now. maybe do a few videos on car repair to get some eyes on your channel (like next time you replace the brakes on your car). There are car repair guys who aren't half as good with 2M subs. I'm sure you can repair anything with wheels and a motor. Boats / jet ski vids would be cool too. Anyway, it would make me happy to see you guys blow up, you deserve it. I think most ppl today just toss their lawn equipment and buy new. I enjoy the challenge of fixing stuff, or I would probably do the same as its not really worth my time to fix most lawn items like weed wackers.

That 160 or 200 Honda engine is the best small engine on the market in my opinion. They are fitted to almost everything these days. Easy as to work on ...

“I’m not going to put cheap parts in this it’s for a customer.” Amen Taryl,..Attaboy!! There’s a reason why those parts are so cheap (Made in China junk). It’s a Honda, use OEM or a good quality aftermarket and fix it right the first time.
Where do you think Stens is made ? It doesn't matter where it is made if it is to specifications. The lower end Honda engine is made in China as well, by Jling , or something to that nature. I believe it is the GA series.
You buy the quality you want from China. You probably don't know, but people used to think the same about things "Made in Japan" just a couple decades ago. "Made in X country" doesn't mean squat anymore, the quality is given by the price you want to pay.
@@camundson3 I'm pretty sure nuclear reactor parts made in China are of pretty good quality, but they're not exactly cheap lol. But to bring things to a more mortal level, you can find suppliers of say LED lamps made in China that are actually pretty good. And on the other hand, you get most of the ebay cheap stuff, so it's up to you who you do business with.
Awesome advice learnt a heap! I'm trying to read those letters and numbers on the engine block and it's been sitting out in the weather for so long I can hardly make them out. End scene very funny guys! Made my day:)
OK so the compression release is a pre top dead center bump on the cam to release partial compression before you hit top dead center on a pull start engine. If it wasn't for the pre release the engine would fire early which will injure your hand when the engine. Kickbacks, which it will if you adjust the valve lash wrong. It can pop the pull rope, and snap tendons in your wrist. ( at the least a bad sprain) The movable weights on the cam are variable timing advance for cam timing at different rpms to advance the timing. Terryll knows his stuff! He is doing a lot of intricate work , and sometimes makes mistakes because he's filming, but he knows his stuff! His terminology isn't always right. He's running a shop, and making videos to help us, so do as he does , but not always what he says to explain how it works.. the explanation of how it works isn't always correct, but how he does it is 100% spot on.
I used to use vasolene petroleum jelly when rebuilding an engine. It was cheap, easily found at drug store, stayed in place after application on parts, provided enough lubrication on initial start up and dissipated mixing with engine oil after engine heated up.

Had a snapper motor with a GV150 Honda motor. Had to hog out that jet a few times before it quit surging. Good reminder that it’s not always an air leak.
Did you hone out the cylinder wall before install the piston? There is a must when you rebuilt on a Honda engine. I do not use after market part any more because it is not worth it. One thing you forget to mention about piston ring. It is thinner than older Honda engine that mean air filter must be maintain clean at all time or a single scratch on piston ring may cause blow by
I appreciate the videos . Every one has a favorite Honda is one of mine. I have done the enlarge the idle feed on carb before . The cam believe it or not SS has them on the Harley engines . My 145 inch with 12.2 to one compression compression has the 640 ez start cams . Would be no way unless you have compression release in the heads . I got a couple of mowers I going to re ring this year so I used your web sight for information.
thanks for including how customers can be when it comes to repair and cost many dont understand how much time is spent finding good parts then waiting on them to arrive install them clean the engine and install back in the equipment...

I've got two of these little Honda engines. One on a pressure washer and the other on a mower. I absolutely love them.

Thanks for the great video. At 33:50 you say the two rings about the oil carrier (I think thats what it is) are to be 90 degrees apart, however if the gaps go from wrist pin to wrist pin they would be 180 degrees apart. Also for the 3rd and 4th rings, they are 180 degrees apart, not 90. All the gaps should be somwhere at 12 oclock, 3 oclock, 6 oclock and 9 oclock. You installed them right, the narrative is incorrect.
This is old superstition anyway. Compression rIngs rotate while the engine operates. Engine manufacturers no longer waste time on staggering gaps on the assembly line. The 3 piece oil ring mostly rotates as an assembly so we worry more about not having the two oil rails lined up.
When the piston ring is inserted into the cylinder, if the distance between the ends of the ring is within how many mm can it be used?

Have a Dixon 4515b ZTR that we've owned for about 5 years or so. During this winter I have basically rebuilt the entire mower including the Briggs 15.5hp Vanguard 28Q777 engine. The whole mower is now done, but it keeps throwing the Drive Belt _(from engine to mower hydrostatic pumps)._ Electric clutch is fine, which that really only concerns the mower deck. This Drive Belt is not that old, bought it not long before I began the rebuild. There are two idler pulleys, one is fixed the other is spring tension and the bolt that holds it is also a rear engine mount bolt. I removed the spring tensioner pulley with entire arm. Saw your video of repairing the arm so I filed it down so the sleeve sticks out a bit when tight, also added a grease zerk etc, now it moves freely like it supposed to when torqued. All pulleys feel smooth and are not bent. Spring is not stretched and is a job to get back to where it goes. Yet it still throws the drive immediately upon engine start. I'm going to buy another belt just to eliminate it. But Any other ideas?? Thanks

well... after 3 days of the drive belt jumping off instantly after engine start. I took the belt this morning. Looked nearly new, no wear spots nothing. Thought it had to be a pulley then. Reinstalled belt exactly as I had it before. Turned engine over by hand, fine. Cranked engine with key, belt ran true, still fine. Started up the engine, still fine. Let mower back down off jack stands, restarted engine, still fine. Took mower out and drove all over the yard, still fine. Turned on the PTO for blades, mowed some winter grass up and down making turns etc, Worked perfectly.
The only thing we did different was my Dad prayed for it and asked the Heavenly Father to make it run. Which I should have done that first. In any case, *Thank the Heavenly Father Yahuah* the mower is done. All I got left is to adjust the brake a bit, and fine tune one of the hydrostats and its ready for spring. Only reason I spent all winter to rebuild our old Dixon is because we didn't have the money to buy a new zero turn. And with our property our regular mower takes half a day or so to mow, as I have make pass after pass trying to get around trees and other stuff.
I work at a shop, gotta love when the customer tries pulling that crap 😂 we record the date and Time of calls so we can prove to them

Thanks for the info on how to look up parts. Sadly, propartsdirect did not have my Briggs engine listed but I was able to find ereplacementparts and get the correct piston assembly and gasket kit for my mower. It's a 2016, so most parts are out of stock.

Nice work Taryl! You're my fav fix it channel on youtube! I'm a mechanical engineer and always learn something in your video's, plus they are hilarious! I've been watching for years...you should have 10M subs by now. maybe do a few videos on car repair to get some eyes on your channel (like next time you replace the brakes on your car). There are car repair guys who aren't half as good with 2M subs. I'm sure you can repair anything with wheels and a motor. Boats / jet ski vids would be cool too. Anyway, it would make me happy to see you guys blow up, you deserve it. I think most ppl today just toss their lawn equipment and buy new. I enjoy the challenge of fixing stuff, or I would probably do the same as its not really worth my time to fix most lawn items like weed wackers.

Some engines require you to torque it to a spec.then go another X amount of degrees further. I guess to stretch the bolt. Seems weird to me.

“I’m not going to put cheap parts in this it’s for a customer.” Amen Taryl,..Attaboy!! There’s a reason why those parts are so cheap (Made in China junk). It’s a Honda, use OEM or a good quality aftermarket and fix it right the first time.
Where do you think Stens is made ? It doesn't matter where it is made if it is to specifications. The lower end Honda engine is made in China as well, by Jling , or something to that nature. I believe it is the GA series.
You buy the quality you want from China.
You probably don't know, but people used to think the same about things "Made in Japan" just a couple decades ago.
"Made in X country" doesn't mean squat anymore, the quality is given by the price you want to pay.

@@camundson3 I'm pretty sure nuclear reactor parts made in China are of pretty good quality, but they're not exactly cheap lol.
But to bring things to a more mortal level, you can find suppliers of say LED lamps made in China that are actually pretty good.
And on the other hand, you get most of the ebay cheap stuff, so it's up to you who you do business with.

Awesome advice learnt a heap! I'm trying to read those letters and numbers on the engine block and it's been sitting out in the weather for so long I can hardly make them out. End scene very funny guys! Made my day:)
OK so the compression release is a pre top dead center bump on the cam to release partial compression before you hit top dead center on a pull start engine.
If it wasn't for the pre release the engine would fire early which will injure your hand when the engine. Kickbacks, which it will if you adjust the valve lash wrong.
It can pop the pull rope, and snap tendons in your wrist.
( at the least a bad sprain)
The movable weights on the cam are variable timing advance for cam timing at different rpms to advance the timing.

He's running a shop, and making videos to help us, so do as he does , but not always what he says to explain how it works.. the explanation of how it works isn't always correct, but how he does it is 100% spot on.
I used to use vasolene petroleum jelly when rebuilding an engine. It was cheap, easily found at drug store, stayed in place after application on parts, provided enough lubrication on initial start up and dissipated mixing with engine oil after engine heated up.

Had a snapper motor with a GV150 Honda motor. Had to hog out that jet a few times before it quit surging. Good reminder that it’s not always an air leak.
Did you hone out the cylinder wall before install the piston? There is a must when you rebuilt on a Honda engine. I do not use after market part any more because it is not worth it. One thing you forget to mention about piston ring. It is thinner than older Honda engine that mean air filter must be maintain clean at all time or a single scratch on piston ring may cause blow by

I appreciate the videos . Every one has a favorite Honda is one of mine. I have done the enlarge the idle feed on carb before . The cam believe it or not SS has them on the Harley engines . My 145 inch with 12.2 to one compression compression has the 640 ez start cams . Would be no way unless you have compression release in the heads . I got a couple of mowers I going to re ring this year so I used your web sight for information.
