I wanted to have longer working time on my camera because recording time on my SONY DSC-WX7 was very short due to the weak battery.
However, there was no connector for an external adaptor so I couldn't supply my camera from an external power source or a battery.
I didn't find any accessory to buy for external powering so I decided to build one.
If you gonna make similar thing...:
Always use proper charger module made for lithium batteries!
Never let the battery discharge completely!
Never do short circuits to the terminals of the lithium battery!
Never let overheat the battery or your compact camera!
Always use the proper fuse in circuit with a battery.
    A fuse is your friend.
In accidental short circuiting will blow the fuse and not the external battery. It need's to be there!
Make sure that you have proper thick gauge wires, lithium batteries can supply a huge amount of current and there is no problem for thin wires to get burned!
Be extra cautious with soldering to you didn't have any hidden short circuits or end of wires which can after sometime bend and make short circuits.
Rather put an extra insulation on the wires.
Make sure nothing will penetrate your battery, for example a small filing for a screw from after you are attaching the lid!
Make first testing very carefully if something tends to get a hot or gets smell turn it off immediately.
At testing make sure you have a back up plan if something will catch fire!
It was a really enjoyable hobby project to do.
External battery is a useful thing when you want to save some money for other projects, or use some smaller older compact camera for making videos.
I also like when I can build something from home supplies and this I think is the right electronic project to do for reducing an amount of home supplies.
I hope this video will find the exact person who is solving this topic, so here I give some keywords which could fit as an enquiry for this video ...would be:
How to hack batery in your compact camera.
How to build an external batery when you don't have on your camera the connector for external supliynig.
How to power your camra from external powersource or bigger batery.
How to do external batery hack.
How to conect external battery when I don't have external connector for it.
How to make my camera shoot for longer time.
How to have a loneger (working) recording time on my compact camera.
How to rebuild camera for external suplying power source.
How to build an extended life battery for compact camera.
How to make my camera last 4 times longer.
How to make an external battery for a comact camera.
I hope you find this video useful.

im curious why you went with the ps/2 port from an old pc? lol i would think it would have been better to use a cut off from a usb cord. also. i noticed you made it so you can open the case. is that just so you can get to the fuse? because everything else was glued down pretty solid. so i doubt you would be able to do much more then that. not bad. i personally would have tried to find a plastic case that fit tho. the wood just didnt appeal to me. for an external battery on a camera im not sure i like it. but as an external for phone or other such device. awesome! :D your goal for cheap was awesome too. lol

Why didn't you simply use a 4 cell or two cell depending on your power needs battery box and plug that directly into your charging socket on your camera, that's what I do all the time and it works very well, I can recharge the onboard battery or run the camera directly from the battery box, don't worry about the box getting in the way cos you can make a simple cloth pouch and attatch it to your strap.

On this camera it isn't possible to power it from usb. I can only charge the battery from usb plug and that doesn't solve my problem. This solution is realy perfect. I don't need to take care much about the battery, I only chcarge the battery from time to time. I like what I made. :-) And I use it a lot. Thanks for commenting.

MDF RESCUER I'm not saying your idea isn't good because it is, but even with USB socket cameras you can charge the battery or run the camera from 3/4 or 6 AA batteries or even D cells it's all in the cable.
I run a camcorder from 4 AA I used to run my old Samsung digital tape from 6 AA in both the AAs charge the battery as well, I also run a small digital camera that eats the batteries that should be used off a couple AAs the trick I found was simply to match the number of AA cells to the battery used or close to it as none of these things run at perfect voltage, and make up a cable which takes a few minutes, then use a small cloth bag to hold the batteries in and attach it to the hand strap it's real easy no need for electronics as the main batteries can charge at a much higher rate once the batteries equalise you can keep on using the camera until both batteries are depleted.
It's just a thought mind you something that works quicker and easier, this works not only for cameras but also mobile phones you name it anything that is battery powered, in fact I've started using 18650s instead of AA in some applications now as they are rechargeable.

I have a Fujifilm S1730 how can i make an external battery ?

    • @MDFRESCUER

To make an external battery for a camera is advanced thing and requires having enough knowledge about electronics. I would rather recommend you to have a look if the manufacturer of your camera makes some accessories for external powering your camera. My first recommendation would be, to rather buy the accessory or more spare batteries. If I would want to make an external battery for such camera as you have. I would do it with a lithium battery and a DC/DC converter module which would be set to the exact voltage as gives you your batteries for your camera. I think it are 4 pieces of 1.5 Volt batteries. That's 6 Volts and I would somehow connect the 6 Volt output of the DC\DC converter to the plus and the minus terminals in the battery compartment of the camera. If you will do so, be careful, not to reverse the polarity or not to connect to the camera higher voltage than is the camera built for.

This seems like a question. I noticed taht's with this external battery it's possible to charge the battery and use the camera at the same time. But, I believe that when the battery it's charging into the battery goes higher voltage and it could possibly damage my camera. So I don't use it in this way. I tried it, it works. I need to make more research about the charging voltages, to confirm that this will not damage my cammera.
