I have to agree completely on it being an absolute shame to see Paul take a nosedive from this serious contender and guy with a lot of heart and soul to him where he was essentially the Rocky Balboa of the Tekken series back in the day of he is this guy from the streets and from a working class life and what not who is out to prove that he can go the distance I guess would be a good way to put it. I do however adore him and Law in Tekken 4 especially because you see that these two guys have fallen on really hard times (more than usual) and it really was a wonderful move by Namco to humanize them as such. Paul has been written off as a joke and he goes all in in the hopes of winning the respect and admiration that he deserves. Paul could easily be placed back in top tier is they really wanted to do it. He is like an American Heihachi when you think about it. He has been able to keep up with the Mishima family quite well when many other characters couldn't. But I really don't like how he was jobbed out from Tekken 4 forward. Turned him into a joke character just because when he was taking out top ranked characters left and right before. He was definitely the perfect foil to Kazuya when the series originally started.
Actually what namco was showing was america vs japan The thing is i can see paul vs normal kazuya be "equal" But once kazuya activate the devil gene get out of here paul Jin comes for the real fight Warm up is over
I hate what they've done to Paul after Tekken 4. They made him into a tough, no nonsense brawler into a joke character. His ending in Tekken 4 was one of the best in the series. The guy was canonically one of the strongest fighters in the series. Prior to Tekken 4, he only lost to Kazuya in Tekken 1. Now he can't even beat fucking Panda. He's still one of the most enjoyable characters to play as. He's perfect for mix-ups and punishers.
Thats the point they are getting at. He became too out of practice and at this point he is behind others who never stopped. He stopped at 3 then started back up at the start of 5.
We don't know exactly how that fight went down or if it's even going to be taken into consideration in the next game. Also while it's not really canon to anything KOFAS' crossover story says he won easily.
consitently though Paul is mid and upper tier character in all Tekken installments and one of the most used characters if the not most used character in all the Tekken franchise since he's in all installments
I despise how they've treated Paul in recent times. He was 1 of the first characters I ever played as in Tekken and I've always been a fan of his simple but awesome design. And him using to Kuma after taking down Base Ogre is nothing short of stupid. By that logic then, if he can go toe-to-toe with Kazuya of all people and DRAW with him then what? We're supposed to believe now Kuma can take down Kazuya? No way can Kuma beat Kazuya especially by the time we hit Tekken 4. I also cannot reasonably see how Kuma could take down Base Ogre. The entire reason Heihachi started the 3rd Tournament was because of Ogre's Power, if Kuma was stronger then why would Heihachi even bother when he already has someone stronger AND is loyal to him? I get that fighting game stories aren't gonna be as deep as something like Final Fantasy or The Last of Us but they could at least not be dumb.
Tekken's story is basically about the Mishima, Kazama and how their families affect the entire world around them. Yet, these two family clans still don't give a flying freak about anybody. Other characters are just ....... there. Tekken has 80% of the characters that got treated like jobbers.
My head canon is that paul actually fought true ogre but was defeated so badly that it leave him with severe and permament psycological trauma, the real reason why he is getting beated so often is that he cant concentrade because everytime he tries to fight seriously he gets flashbacks of his fight with true ogre. The goofyness he displays from tekken 4 until now is his way to cope with the pain and mind erosion caused by his PTSD.
the thing is, Paul is the most popular Tekken character, throughout the games, he's definitely the most played, and one of the most liked just as a character alone, people wanna see him win, he's been cheated out of his win so many times, so hopefully they do Paul justice in tekken 8, because no matter how much they try to change it, Paul will always be the unofficial face of the tekken franchise, and they need to write better plots for him, instead of treating him as a comic relief side character
Paul deserves much better then freakin Jin who was given all his victories. He is nothing more then Tekken's biggest Gary Sue. Paul seemed like he worked hard and got nothing in return.
Thanks. Not to mention that in Tekken 3, Paul beaten Ogre but left, thinking he won before Ogre transformed into True Ogre, whom Jin end up killing, like what he said in the video. Now, people might say “oh, but True Ogre would truly kill Paul so Jin would be the only one to kill him.” Which... honestly proves my point even more. Yes, Jin is the main character but that doesn’t mean he has to he bland and be the one who wins in every Tekken climax. Tekken 4, Beats Heihatchi and Kazuya in the same dojo. Tekken 5, he lost the tournament BUT WON ANYWAYS because apparently Devil Jin counts as a different entry. Tekken 6, becomes an unlikable prick who bombed many countries so he can get rid of his devil gene instead of training himself to tame it like a man and ends up one hit killing Azazel.
@@MetaKnuxXbeats I think tekken 6 made him more interesting then, the story there being like that cuz of him taking over the Mishima Zaibatsu and seeing a change in his character compared to previous games
This video made me respect Paul so much! It’s a damn shame Tekken writers buried him so hard! What the hell did Paul do to piss off creative!? When is his contract up? Maybe he’d be better in street fighter
Paul could have been exhausted against Kuma due to his age. I mean the man is in his mid-late 40’s. And he isn’t getting younger. Sure he is still strong as hell. But in his prime, he should be much stronger.
@@adrianziecik6280 Old comment but whatevs. Paul has literally defeated a frigging GOD IN HAND TO HAND COMBAT. A god who's very domain is supposed to be fighting. But sure. Okay Harada. A joke character. Gotcha.
Having known Tekken for over a decade, it saddens me that Paul turned into a joke character (Tekken 5-onwards) and not just him but everyone else as well. Paul has such a good character development and I think he is one of those powerful characters who are on par with the Mishimas, he's even possibly more powerful than Bryan Fury (as seen in Tekken 6 intro), I hope in the future Paul gets back to his roots and leave the comedy relief to the animals and Ganryu. BTW @7:01 it's pronounced Baa-jee-chu-wan NOT Baa-jee-koo-won.
Dude Kuma is a freaking bear trained by Heihachi Mishima, a guy that can surf rockets, throw steel beams, get over freaking demons and floor with special forces at age of 80. He might be a jobber but he had potential to even win the tournament. The problem is that every character except Mishimas are joke tier now. Those who aren´t portrayed as joke characters are destroyed by those joke characters and one point and can´t reach to the Mishima podium so who cares. Even if they can destroy walls or beat armies they are still joke characters because Kazuya can destroy a satellite with his eyes and Jin is a Gary Stu that literally controls the world. Also FUN FACT: Paul is the winner of Tekken 3 in the lore because on the official FG tournament Ryan Hart won with him.
@Gojira Sentai It seems like in MK they CANT do some characters justice without RUINING OR WASTING OTHERS, I mean just look at Kenshi, Ermac, RAIN, Reptile, FREAKING MILEENA, Shujinko, MOTARO, Taven, Reiko, Havik, Frost, Scarlet, Stryker, Kabal, Smoke, Nightwolf, and even Shaoh Kahn recently. Its like if they hate EVERY character that wasnt on the movie (or the first MK game)
they had to make him into a joke character because Kazuya is an antagonist now but i wish he could be involved in the story like trying to surpass him or some shit
They had to throw him to the side lines because jin had been introduced. Noticed how he was always going against kazuya before tekken 3 (jins debut) if jin was never introduced it would be paul going against kazuya in tekken 8 not Jin. I think they should give paul another rival or make him a teacher and give him a pupil or something he's like in his 50s in tekken 7 and it would be interesting to have his pupil draw to jin or beat kuma or kazuya. I think it would be boring to have his pupil be just a carbon copy of paul like forest is to law maybe give his pupil like fast but low damage moves and be more combo focused idk.
@@kingpotato7183 Namco still treated Paul very poorly. Even if Jin was introduced, they still could have given Paul some action. I mean, his interaction with Bryan in T6 for one example seemed promising. And given his status and strenght, or how he got cheated by the plot, he at least deserved to win one tournament. Even in his old age he still has power (he's still op as fuck), so if Namco would give a crap about Paul again, they surely could give him easily a proper story again, in a believable way.
Paul’s fighting style is still confirmed by Namco and Harada to be Judo. But he mixes Karate with it. So... Kudo? Cuz Kudo is a legit style that is a mix of Karate and Judo.
I see why NAMCO Never gave Paul a push. HE"S F****ING AMERICAN That's IT. What else it can be???? you tell me. He's Careless?? Don't give me that shit Careless people doesn't go head to head with Kazuya and get a Draw. He has never had plot armor or any Devil Gene or Some Supernatural Shit, but Paul has beaten the best out there purely because of his skills. A People's Champ and Uncrowned champion. Why he never won the Iron Fist Tournament?? It's simple NAMCO Never wants him to win coz He's All American. Is it Fair?? You tell me.
I don't care what anyone says, I believe Paul could legitimately beat anyone on the cast. I'm not saying he'd dominate them all, but I believe he could win against them all no matter how close or one sided it might be for him
Paul suffers with the Baki effect, no foreigner can be victorious with a Japanese writer making Japanese characters beat foreign characters, particularly Americans.
Funny you mention Baki, this whole video I was thinking how much Paul reminds me of Jack Hanma. A powerful blonde foreigner who's introduced as a rival to the protagonist but quickly gets demoted to a C-lister the moment his story relevance has expired.
100% spot on. They did do him right for tekken 1 -3 however. After that good ole Japanese nationalism/racism kicked in. To be fair, it is a Japanese game. So it comes as no surprise when the protagonists are Japanese. If Tekken was American you bet Paul and Kazuya would switch places. And Baki is pure trash. No idea how it blew up. The writer straight shits on white guys while propping up black fighters/Japanese. The author did write one very powerful white fighter in the death row story arc. And that was Dorian. Whom is said could have been much stronger than his showing if he had kept up his training instead of slacking off. He held the title of Kaioru I think.
+Turk Turkelton Beg your pardon but I'm a Caucasian male and I like Baki. There are a bazillion series with Caucasian male heroes; so what if ONE series doesn't depict them favourably?
I really would have loved it if they had Paul get into a rivalry with Bryan in Tekken 6 (we see it in the opening at 10:31), but they turned him into a joke in that game, such wasted potential SMH!
Paul was always a goof character in Tekken imo. Since the very beginning but more serious in the first two Tekkens. He punched a wall with a drawing of Kazuya's face on it in his T1 ending, He botched a backflip in Law's T2 ending. But yes, T4 is where he was done dirty. It's like he had backstage heat in the locker room after beating Ancient Ogre and the writer decided to bury him by losing to Kuma in T4 lol. He's probably the Bret Hart of Tekken, and ik that's not the best comparison.
what's worse is that his T4 non-canonical ending is so badass. he becomes the head of the mishima zaibatsu, only to give it all away to go back to his martial arts and biker lifestyle. it truly takes some balls to make a choice like that. «Ain't my style.»
I guess people grew attached to Paul Phoenix by Tekken 4 - that ending mesmerized them so much that it look like a redemption arc for him - but of course, that was non-cannon so I guess anyone can get pissed off by that storyline. and devs btw, that’s how you do endings if ya wanna win yer players back. (In my case preference- Asuka Kazama deserves better too)
@Ice listen, Paul was the first person who Fought Kazuya in tekken 1. Not Jun, not Jin, not lars, not Eddy, not Leo, not Nina, or anyone else. He's the only non Mishima character who fought him to a Draw battle and Paul lost to Kazuya because he nearly beat him. Don't forget he beat Ogre (only his first form) and left without thinking his second form of Ogre and nearly won in Tekken 3 story but sadly it was Jin who destroyed true Ogre and he was a officially a winner of tekken 3. And you saying stop being naive and face the facts? Man, give this man a respect because he did it. I'm still waiting for their rematch between Paul and Kazuya in tekken 8
he stopped being important in kof as soon as kyo was introduced even though the king of fighters tournament is originally from fatal fury the game terry comes from
The ruination of Paul and so many other characters is why I don't bother with Tekken Lore anymore, Tekken 5 was my last Tekken game, but six and seven look cool. I'm so sick of these games focusing on The Mishima's, there overrated ! I like them, but I like it better when there feuding with other characters. The other characters stories are much more interesting.
Actually in T6 Kazuya was kinda relevant because the war with Jin’s Mishima Zaibatsu and Kazuya’s G Force had build up to awaken Azazel whom they both were after, Heihachi was irrelevant for Tekken 6 did nothing and both Kazuya and Heihachi were irrelevant for T5, Jin was irrelevant for almost the entire duration of T7 because of that Coma from fighting Azazel.
@@evil5150 Bryan Fury is a psychopathic baby with anger issues that fake UFC Tekken players use. Bruce Irvin has lost in most of the Tekken lore. He's always forgotten about even in promotional stuff. 2018 and he still running around with chickens C'Mon Son. He's not top-tier never has been, you name the last time somebody won major tournament with the Bruce Irving.
For those that say Paul is now a joke. It's Tekken. Everyone at one point is treated like a joke. And I consider his rivalry with Kuma more badass than a joke. Zangief fights bears all the time and he is praised for that. What makes Paul different with his fights against Kuma the bear?
The problem is that his rivalry regressed into Kuma instead of Kazuya initially. He had the feats to back it up, and T3 is where he was at his prime by beating Ogre, the God of Fighting. His fighting prowess and undefeated record went down the toilet.

Facts
Yeah I'm still waiting for them to fight in the story. If akuma does not return in Tekken 8. I want Paul to be fighting Kazuya final form
Actually what namco was showing was america vs japan

Just found your videos and happy that I did, funny and informative.
He lost to Kuma, not Panda and the story says and shows that he didnt trained anymore before tekken 4 and ended up on the streets,he got out of shape
I was referring to Tekken 7. It's pretty clear Panda defeating Paul will be canon later on.
@@NihilisticIdealist
You are dumb,Panda is nowhere near a level to defeat Paul, even the current one
We don't know exactly how that fight went down or if it's even going to be taken into consideration in the next game.
Also while it's not really canon to anything KOFAS' crossover story says he won easily.
Can someone buy the rights to Paul Phoenix and do him correct. He is as iconic as scorpion is to mk
Wouldn't go that far.
Super iconic
Yeah but technically Kaz/Heihachi is Scorpion level popular
Paul is a “fan favorite” not “face of the franchise”
He’s supposed to be the coolest hard fighting never giving up tekken character but the devs are so shit
WE NEED MORE RESPECT VIDEOS!!!
I'm still shock he was turned into a joke he's still one of the strongest characters in Tekken
*Was* one of the strongest. Now he would get smashed even by Base Kazuya.
@@NinjaWorldWarrior16
Compared to non mishimas is strong though
He's still one of the strongest
ua-cam.com/video/Ia51pZzWZO0/v-deo.html
At the beginning i always thought that he was the face of tekken
consitently though Paul is mid and upper tier character in all Tekken installments and one of the most used characters if the not most used character in all the Tekken franchise since he's in all installments
Paul is the goat of tekken, maybe not in lore, but if he's the most used character then you can't argue with the facts.
That's actually a good head canon, and a good excuse to make Paul like that. At least he'd have SOME reason why he got careless when fighting Kuma.
There's a few issues with that.
Poor guy just can't catch a break.
the thing is, Paul is the most popular Tekken character, throughout the games, he's definitely the most played, and one of the most liked just as a character alone, people wanna see him win, he's been cheated out of his win so many times, so hopefully they do Paul justice in tekken 8, because no matter how much they try to change it, Paul will always be the unofficial face of the tekken franchise, and they need to write better plots for him, instead of treating him as a comic relief side character
It's even worse in 8. Just sad
Sigh... At least I was there, playing Paul during Tekken 1-3...
ua-cam.com/video/Ia51pZzWZO0/v-deo.html
One of the best in all fight games
Paul deserves much better then freakin Jin who was given all his victories. He is nothing more then Tekken's biggest Gary Sue. Paul seemed like he worked hard and got nothing in return.
I agree with this.
The main character will always get the shine even if people dont like it that that character gets everything
Blackdarkness 679 yea but at least make the character interesting and likable.

But in his prime, he should be much stronger.

ua-cam.com/video/Ia51pZzWZO0/v-deo.html
Having known Tekken for over a decade, it saddens me that Paul turned into a joke character (Tekken 5-onwards) and not just him but everyone else as well. Paul has such a good character development and I think he is one of those powerful characters who are on par with the Mishimas, he's even possibly more powerful than Bryan Fury (as seen in Tekken 6 intro), I hope in the future Paul gets back to his roots and leave the comedy relief to the animals and Ganryu. BTW @7:01 it's pronounced Baa-jee-chu-wan NOT Baa-jee-koo-won.
Paul has been a joke since Tekken 2. Get over yourself. Tekken is dead. Namco/Bandai has all the blame
I noticed they made Paul and Law joke characters and I don't know why
No, Paul would be the winner of ot wasn't for the true roger business.

I swear Tekken is the worst when it come to ruining and disrespecting fan favorite characters.

All i want to know its what kind of hair gel is Paul Phoenix using to keep that hair so straight in a fight lool.

The same kind Shinji Ito from "Kyo Kara Ore Wa" uses.
ua-cam.com/video/Ia51pZzWZO0/v-deo.html
Nice 1
they had to make him into a joke character because Kazuya is an antagonist now but i wish he could be involved in the story like trying to surpass him or some shit
Kudo is a Japanese term of hand-to-hand combat. Basically, it's a free style fight.
@@alexferrana3979 No, Kudo is both Kyokushin Karate and Judo. That’s what the name was intended to be.

Why he never won the Iron Fist Tournament?? It's simple NAMCO Never wants him to win coz He's All American. Is it Fair?? You tell me.
I don't care what anyone says, I believe Paul could legitimately beat anyone on the cast. I'm not saying he'd dominate them all, but I believe he could win against them all no matter how close or one sided it might be for him
Writers are hardcore Mishima fanboys basically.
Clearly, the writers in this game are Mishima and Kazama' fanboys.
Doubtful considering other Japanese characters are treated worse.

You should do Respect: Law
Paul suffers with the Baki effect, no foreigner can be victorious with a Japanese writer making Japanese characters beat foreign characters, particularly Americans.
Sounds like racism, i mean come on the dude is meant to be a beast, yet he's being treated as a joke
Even Japanese people aren't safe in this game.
He's not my favorite, but he deserves some respect. Hopefully namco gives him an epic comeback.

Even the Mishima's not names Jin aren't entirely safe. Kazuya was super irrelevant in 5 and 6. It's only 7 that put him back in the limelight again.
