This UA-cam channel is dedicated to Tekken :) The best fighting game to ever grace this beautiful planet!
Let's also remember that Paul fought Kazuya to a draw
Yeah! he should be fighting against Kazuya in tekken 7. but no, it didn't happen. so i have only one request for Harada. Paul and Kazuya should happen in tekken 8 because he hasn't fought him in 20 years.
and please namco, make him serious again.
@@bettercallpaul3579 Honestly, after how much effort has been spent on showing off the strength of the Mishima bloodline and the Devil Gene, I really don't think that re-establishing that rivalry is possible at this point. Besides, they only made Paul his supposed rival at the start so they could mirror the Ryu and Ken rivalry of Street Fighter.
It's also unfortunate because we're left with all these other characters that had scores to settle with a member of the Mishima family (Eddy, Miguel, Lee, etc) and you know they could never succeed at this point.
@@shadowofficer1193 i'm still hoping that Kazuya and Paul suppose to happen in tekken 8. and this rivalry will happen once again for Paul's Rematch.
JAY RETRO facts
Don't forget that Paul can fight Kuma
A literal bear that knows Mishima Style Arts
Sure it's a joke character but if your name isn't Saejima or Kiryu, you're either armed or running xD
I gotta say - if there's one things I'll always remember from this game it's one song.
Authentic Sky.
Inner Shrine was the one that carved into my memory instantly. That epic triple-way match between the Mishima's is something Bamco can no longer capture, sadly.
Touch and Go
authentic sky an absolute masterpiece beautiful music in the history of tekken 😍😍😍😍😍
I always loved the Airport theme. Very Nostalgic and calming
Don't forget Fear and Uninhabited
man...I still love T4 style..
the cutscenes...the narrator...the music...everything about this game is really awesome.
Agreed, in hindsight comparing with past tekkens the story presentation in tekken 4 is more memorable. I love the narrator/announcer and artwork for prologues and epilogues.
Tekken 3 announcer is my next favorite.
Welp, The narrator I prefer Tekken 3 narrator
But the rest is awesome
I remember buying Tekken 4, after years of wanting Tekken 3, I picked up Paul in story mode right away and I see "Paul went undefeated through the entire KOIFT 3, and even triumphed over Ogre"
I was like: "really?! wow! that's exactly what I wanted, I can't wait to see his ending"
I beat T4, and I'm greeted with this epic ending and I say:
"wow...I can't wait for Tekken 5."
later that year, Tekken 5 comes out, I buy it, I'm ready to play Paul once again, I play story mode, and I'm instantly underwhelmed and disappointed...
I feel you man :'(
Captain Wesker, well, my first game was Tekken 3, I played 2 and Tag before Tekken 4, but the first Tekken game I actually owned was Tekken 4, but everyone I knew had Tekken 3, so I got to play plenty of it.
Yeah, i had a similar experience. I went through Paul's story mode in Tekken 5, finished and went "Oh, he wants to beat up aliens. That's kinda funny, i guess but now i'm gonna play it again to unlock his true ending." Much disappointment was had that day.
I always felt Paul should have won 3 and Law should have won 4.
You're not the only one, man.... also, Paul's Tekken Tag Tournament 1 ending is sad, but respectful in a way
You know what I find interesting? If you play T6 Scenario Campaign as Kazuya and face Paul at the end, Kaz will say something along the lines of ‘You’re not what you used to be’. I think the devs are aware of his bad change but still won’t take him back to his routes.
Paul got the same treatment as Yamcha.
Melku44 appropriate profile pic.
It happends :/
When you realize he's a joke/badass character this man defeated ogre, a bear that was train by heihachi, surpriselying managed to survive feng wei a Chinese man destroyed a mountain and a huge lava boulder. Yea he ran away but he's able to keep up and take hit from this man. Sheeesh
@@Tekinoftekken too much bro ._.
In story prety much yes but not in being powerful terms
Holy shit that ending sent shivers down my spine! "Ain't my style" - almost cried.
lol you got scared
@@FreeAimDog REEEAUGGGAAGGHHHHH
For some reason I felt that too
At 9:12 MainManSWE complains about Law spamming standing 4 and flips.
*Spams deathfist the entire match*
No joke man, those kicks got me
This makes me think of TTT1. While not canon, still acknowledges his rivalry with Kazuya. RIP old Paul.
Keep the tekken 4 story vids coming.
I'm pretty interested in your takes of the character stories
Paul Phoenix is a prime example of how the story began to go downhill in Tekken 5, as good of a game as it was. How does someone go from fighting Kazuya to a draw and being the victor against a grizzly bear and an Aztec God of Fighting to a complete moron who babbles on about being the toughest in the universe while thinking aliens exist?
Yea but alien tho must exist cuz we cant the only living creature in the universe
Also the one who defetead Ogre in T3. Paul is a very strong character in the Tekken universe however after T4, they transform him in a joke
TheLoquendist Already mentioned in my comment.
"...being the victor against a grizzly bear and an Aztec God of Fighting (Ogre)..."
But aliens DO exist in the Tekken universe. Ogre is even strongly implied to be one himself.
@@MrJormageddon Touché, but if you look back at Paul's character development from T1 to T4, it still sounds so silly coming from someone like him.
Canon-wise, Paul is one of the strongest non-Mishima caharacters. He tied with Kazuya and would have won the 3rd Kiing of Iron First if Ogre didn't morph.
He also made it to the finals in tekken 2, and I think tekken 1 too
He would have won the 3rd tournament regardless if Ogre didn't morph, I believe he could have beaten True Ogre
Bandai is slowly turning the entire Tekken roster into joke characters.
Unless you're a Mishima.
@@irvinmorales1409 uhh they clowned Heihachi at some point
@@chalachouchou
Most of that was non-canon. Story line wise, Heihachi has always played a huge role.
Akirafan99 facts
@@baradona11
Him sending Kaz, Jin, and Jinpachi to space on a rocket in T5 was great as well.
Paul Phoenix went from American Bada** to American Dumba**
In Tekken 7, Negan hits him with the Vampire Bat aka NERF Bat. Paul just can't seem to catch a break nowadays.
I like how the ending of Pauls story in T4 is a callback to Paul's part of the Tekken 2 intro.
This video in 1 word:
*WRAAAAAAAAAAUGH*
I know his flat top hair is iconic, but I totally miss the alt costume with the non ridiculous hair.
The skyscraper rooftop stage in T4 is my favorite. I like the music in T7 and how they change the soundtrack when the match point is reached, but I love how T4 crescendoes the music after the round's final hit. When the drums kick in in authentic sky, the soundtrack for the rooftop stage, its just a marvel to listen to.
i know right authentic sky is just bone chilling hauntungly beautiful best music in tekken history

Exactly!! Paul was a badass in the earlier Tekken games!
Now he's a clown! My old original main
He's always been a clown sense tk1 fighting a bear then somehow got late in the tk3 tournament.
@@shenelljohnson74 he can be goofy at times but not a total moron. He should be something like an uncle you want to hang around, but not one you want to mess with.
@@suiken3149 Paul phoenix has always been funny character and he has always been strong at the same time
@@shenelljohnson74 Yes, got into (or got himself into) funny/dumb situations since Tekken 1, but not to the ridiculous degree it's gotten starting with Tekken 5. Previously he was a funny yet *very* competent guy. Nowadays they seem to focus too much on the "funny" that it's more sad than funny.
@@danielreid703 That is what I an saying. However, since t5, he started to be treated like a jobber.
They need to hire back the Story writer and sound designer for T8
Looking at Paul's story for T4 makes me disappointed to know that in T5 he was willing to let his best friend's son die for a hopeless goal lol. Also knowing he of all people beat ogre makes me confident that even Chloe can
He wasn't trying to let him die. It wasn't about the money for Paul. If you lose to him, Paul says he will give all the prize money to Law when he wins to save his son. Paul only truly cares about the glory.
Have mercy.. I was 11 years old in 94. I remember playing in the arcades
The 90s...happy years...

Ahh, the good old PS2 days feelsgoodman
Paul's ending in Tekken 4 is so underrated.
He received the Knuckles The Echidna treatnent. He's red, he punches things, he's sort of an asshole
Edit: omg forgot about that ending. I knew something was familiar in his T7 intro
I never notice paul has a more personality in tekken 4 and never thinking too much deeply cause sometimes tekken giving people laugh well I wish this old paul is still alive.
In Tekken lore, if you're not a Mishima or a Kazama, you're basically nothing.
Paul has the most camera zoom in hits like when a deathfist hits, on his triple hop kick...
The thing about Paul being used as a comic relief character is that in the earlier games he wasn't portrayed as the idiot that he now is made out to be in the newer additions of Tekken, but in what happened to him. He couldn't make it in time to fight Kazuya in the second tournament after their first fight that lasted for hours because of a multi-car accident on the expressway, he also defeated Ogre in the third tournament but walked away because he thought it was over, before Ogre actually morphed into his second form. He was looked up to, and in Tekken 4 he's potrayed as this character fallen from grace, because no one would believe that he actually won the third tournament, thus his dojo went out of business from the lack of students, losing friends and admirers at the same time. It's in Tekken 5 and afterwards that his portrayal took a turn in the wrong direction, because the focus went on the Mishima Saga, and instead chose to make Kuma II Paul's rival.
For some stupid reason, too many characters get their potencial wasted just for giggles. For example : Paul , Law, Asuka, Lilith , Eddy , Anna ( I havent' played Tekken 7 story mode only watched a few character endings so please don't spoil).
@@mightykanohii Eddy has Mass Effect Andromeda facial animations, almost no voice lines and gets dabbed on by Lucky Chloe.
Sad...
@@mightykanohii Paul just going around fighting people, what can lili do besides being a annoying ever time Tekken characters talk to her she interrupted them or keeps talking (tk6 campaign dialogue) asuka thinks everyone get a beating without asking them questions first of why they deserved it, Law just wants Money to feed his family or business Anna working for kazuya i don't see how she a big impact around the mishima destruction's, plus she only wanted to find a suitable husband to lean on and never fight again but that change quickly, Eddy story shouldn't continue because fighting kazuya is a suicidal act, we know what kazuya capable of Even heihachi and shin akuma struggle to take him down,
@@shenelljohnson74
- Paul should get a Terry Bogard treatment, not like some dumbass like he is portrayed in later games.
- I agree with Lili being an annoying little twat that adds nothing to Asuka's story.
- Law will be Law. Money was always his motivation upon entering the tournament.
- Anna is working for Kazuya. She can still be relevant somehow but she needs a new rival aside from her sister Nina.
- Eddy should have faced Kazuya at least one time. Of course he would lost, but there is Christie to replace him on the next game.
- Akuma is so irrelevant and adds nothing to the main plot. I don't know what Harada is thinking, putting him in the storyline.
- Asuka should be involved in the main storyline with her carrying the Kazama blood.
Paul fought Kazuya to a draw before any tournament happened,
It was a street fight
in Tekken 1 he lost to Kazuya after hours of fighting, that's how Kazuya won the tournament...
in t2 Paul couldn't make it in time to fight Kaz
Before he became a Joke
His rival character in T1 and 2 was Kuma
Ikr, Paul was badass from Tekken 1-4. Then Namco did him dirty in Tekken 5 onwards which pisses me off. Fuk Harada.
@@Athenya Even the older Kuma had that scary look. And Paul's real rival was Kazuya as he pull a draw against him in the first game.
@@suiken3149 Kuma only had a scarier look because of how limited the graphics where, its very hard to make him look fluffy and cute on the PS1.
Besides do you even remember what Paul's endings was about in the older games?
Also isn't it only T4 that states he pulled a draw against Kazuya?
Because the actual games only implies that he fought Kuma as his mid boss (Which is usually refered to as the characters rival)
@@Athenya Yes, I've watch Kuma's ending in 2 and 3. Are you aware that Kuma in 2 is different from Kuma from 3? Kuma's ending in Tekken 2 isn't actually funny because it's just basically the same as Paul's ending in Tekken 1.
Kuma in T2 is not the same Kuma that flirts with Panda. This Kuma is actually vicious and eats human meat, as described in his bio.
That ending never goes old. Takes me back to Summer 2004.
Exactly. Couldnt agree more. I will always be a Paul main but I cant take his character seriously.
Can't get enough of Tekken 4
Im going to be honest: Paul reminds me of GSP.
GSP was the best fighter there was. But brain damage caught up to him, and he started believing in aliens.
Maybe they can get inspiration in GSP when he unretired to face Bisping and won his belt, to ride into the sunset for good now.
A Paul vs Kazuya storyline where Paul puts his career on the line, or something like that for Tekken 8. If GSP could make a comeback, so can Paul.
love that comparison
I liked his voice in T4. Now he sounds like an gruff old dude with a sore throat.
Thank Eric Kelso for voicing him in T4 and T5. Now, it's been Jamieson Price voicing him in T6 onwards.
Wait Jamieson Price? Damn, such a wasted voice.
I love hearing, "Osu!", "No pain no gain!", "Gotcha!", "Nothing like a good work out!" & Eric Kelso grunts.
Paul, before Harada's finger loomed over Paul's character. Who but UFO spooks could love this characters personality...
Really glad you're making these T4 videos. It's my favourite Tekken for the same reasons as well.
Paul's Tekken 4 ending might just be my favourite ending in all of fighting games
The worst thing is that he never got to face Kazuya. They tease us for so long and nothing. Hwoarang wanted to face Jin in T3 but he didn't have any chance. In the next tournament he was stopped by the military (deserted). When T5 approached he got the chance. Where's Paul's?
PS: Forgot to mention they actually give you a fight in story mode with some cutscenes between Hwo and Jin (t4) but it wasn't canon.
He fought Kazuya in T1 and lost. But then he made it to the final round in T2 (against Kazuya) but couldn't get to the match on time because he got stuck in a traffic jam.
@@EternalSilverDragon actually it's a draw.
@@MaxCanonStunner The draw that happened between Kazuya and Paul was in a street fight prior to T1. Paul, who had only ever experienced winning up until that point, wasn't satisfied with a draw and so he decided to enter the first Tekken tournament so he can settle things with Kazuya.
Their match in the penultimate round of the first Tekken tournament was almost another draw. It was an exhaustive match with neither fighter willing to give up, but after about 3 hours, Kazuya finally clinched the win.
Tekken developers got lazy with the lore from tekken 5 onwards.
Tekken 5 lore was pretty good. The characters involved with Jinpachi, some pretty sad even. The king story, , Jin and hwo. It had some pretty good stories.
Tekken 6 wasn't laziness but it was more so, it was just bad lol. (well Scenario Campaign was good but not as good as it should of been.) Paul has sucked since tekken 5 though...
At this point, y'all are underrating Tekken 5.
@@c.t.a.5983 Tekken 5 is great on content and overall gameplay. But it is the start of bad writing for the franchise.
- Feng Wei destroying mountains? It will make Ogre and Devil look like a joke.
- Jinpachi being alive and strong as an oak at the age of 120? Would have been more believable if Jinpachi was introduced as Heihachi's older brother.
- Heihachi survived without much damage after the explosion? This is where Tekken start to look ridiculous. Would have been handled better if he was somehow revived with a new body like Kazuya or something like that.
- Asuka, a great potential for the main plot, wasted for some petty rivalry with a spoiled, rich kid.
@@PegAsi_ Tekken 5 storyline was horrible imo and it had the worst canon ending ever
T5 still had awesome endings. The newer ones are so low effort and bad :(
I miss this Paul...
That beach (kitsch) stage reminds me so much of my summer childhood when i was 7. Everything was peaceful.
Absolutley stupid that they removed the dramatic k.o replay system.
Thats the part of character development. He obviously faced schizophrenia and he became a child again. And jokes aside I really miss badass biker from tekken 3.
He was clown out when he defeated ogre when he transform. Then miss the tournament again, nothing changes especially law tk3 ending he think he's all that. His arrogant won't go no where.
Paul still seemed joke like in 3. The ending alone is what shows it
Alex B Paul was a more serious version back then with a little bit of humor. He was a good balance of humorous/badass that could fuck you up and has goals and aspirations. Current Paul now is no longer the charismatic, badass, enigmatic biker brawler. But an overly arrogant, dumb sounding fool. He’s not low key anymore. It’s almost like a complete mirror opposite of who he used to be
I don't even play Paul, and I am still kind of upset at what they did to him.
He been like this sense tk1 to 2 fighting kuma, da hell. He's a joke but a badass character. Nothing changes.
Paul became Robert Baratheon in the ending, before he realised he lost his true passion.
I’m just laughing at how MainMan is playing Paul. He’s playing it as he would describe T7 Ranked Paul players “deathfist hurfhgh”
Worst part is original Paul could be funny too. For example, Law's ending in Tekken 2, where he teaches Paul how to do a summersault, only fo him to smugly try and fail, is still funny. It played off of his overconfidence, showing a goofier side to him without disregarding his legitimacy as a grounded character. There was no need at all to choose one version over the other.
I miss this Paul.
I'm probably the only one who sorta miss Kurt Cobain haircut Paul
You aren't the only one 😔
Kazuya would look like that too lmao
I instantly liked the video before even watching, these are the types of videos wanna watch.
This was why I stopped playing Paul.
R.I.P. real Paul.
Tekken 1~4.
He was still kuma rival in tk2, he defeated ogre but didn't stop him while transform, law ending shows him still having his arrogant. Tk4 ending went over your head extremely bad, to the point not even abel didn't take him seriously. Cuz he was dumb but NOT weak.
@@shenelljohnson74 Kuma in Tekken 2 was a ferocious bear who eats people. Very different from Kuma Jr. who have love struggles with Panda.
Man Paul is my favorite character in Tekken. It all started when I looked at his hair. I really loved him but when I saw his Tekken 4 story my respect for the man grew like never before. I still like him but he's too much a clown now. Tekken 4 is my favorite Tekken (even though I've NEVER played it) because it has that 2000s aesthetic and feel and the 2000 were the best years in my life.

Dude play it on any emulator any chance you get. It's the only fighting game where I'm happy no matter which stage gets selected because all the tracks are close to perfect

Stages in this game are so much better
Tekken 4 - still good . I love the walls
Stage 5 is aesthetically perfect. My eyes love it.
Love old school Paul.
Yes he was the exact same joker we no, in tk2 fighting kuma. His arrogant always guide him.
Paul was one of the coolest characters, he was Kazuyas nemesis on the first games.
He is still great to play, but lore-wise they made him a clown.
Instead of the new characters whixh have been more and more lackluster after Tekken 5 (Claudio, Katarina, Gigas, Zafina, Eliza, Lucky Chloe, etc even though some as Dragunov and Lars are great) I would prefer them to bring back the best possible version of classic characters.
What about bringing Paul back to glory? What about recovering Jun and Kunimitsu and making them return in even better shape than they showed in Tag 2? Doctor B? Michelle Chang?
And what about bringing back creative stages as the ones in Tekken 4? DoA has been showing a levwl of interactivity that would be great to have in Tekken.
I'd like to see that!
He's already a joke character, but he's badass at the same time he fought kuma in tk2 why are you surprised. Defeated ogre until he transform. Tk4 paul attitude is the same as always. He's been arrogant. Listening to mainman can destroyed ur brain cells.
Best ending of all tekken series, R.I.P True Paul.
I liked Kaz, Paul and Jin's face models up untill T5
Paul Phoenix is amazing!
Man these videos are taking me back. Fantastic stuff
"Pardon my french...

Im glad you did this video man. A lot of people might not care about tekkens story but the characters are really what got me into the game for tekken 3, tag and 4 for me. I feel like bryan's laugh is way worse. I feel like hworang was a LOT cooler back then also.
I noticed that in Tekken 4 a lot of the moves move your character at greater distance than in Tekken 7. Sometimes it looks silly as if they are sliding on the ice.
Lee's Mist Step distance in this game was pretty unreal XD. Wallsplat at an angle in a rounded stage meant an infinite combo with his step chains
Paul in Tekken 4 with long hair was best hairstyle
That Kurt Cobain style was amazing
I was never really on board with it, plus it makes him look more generic. If you drew a silhouette of Paul with his original upright hairstyle, you would immediately know it was him. I don't think the same can be said with his hair down.
Paul looks like Triple H and Edge with his long hairstyle.
what i liked about earlier tekkens was that mostly, if not all the characters were given alot of love, its one of the reasons i dont really enjoy mk games story that much because characters who are supposed to be badass for example noob saibot or erron black are just boring lackeys who are just there to lose. tekken 7 only cares about the mishima family story. someone like me wants to see if armour king did get his revenge for marduk killing his brother. for a fighting game it nice to show all your characters being fleshed out and actually having character. i dont expect a mortal kombat level kindve story telling. stick to tekken 4 style with a prologue and epilogue and add in a rival cutscene then im happy because you can get the funniest and coolest interaction with one of my favourites being ryu hayabusa and jann lee from doa 4 with them showing off their nunchaku skills lol
Tekken could take a page out of Mortal Kombats story. Especially now. I dont play MK but the story interests me. Even the character interactions before a fight you learn a little about the lore and relationships of the characters.
Too much work for harada😂
If did that several characters would get kill off i don't think fan's want that.
@@shenelljohnson74 im not talking about fatalities. Its mortal kombats emphasis on the storyline and general lore. Tekkens story telling is boring and only centers around the mishimas. Its a shame beacuse Tekkens lore and character bios was interesting back in the day.
@@partycrasher854 if yoshi continue Fighting Bryan one of them dies, if nina fight's Anna seriously Anna dies, if Julia went after kazuya she well also die, knowing kazuya murders intention, If Marduk and armor king fought each other to a bloody mess, what im trying to say is if those characters go any further in the story mode they won't be in next installment. You saw what happened to soul calibur 5 right, they took it too serious to the point half those characters die or went missing because of nightmares sword opening up portal and crap. Plus not everyone a joke, feng wei, Bryan, Master raven, dragonov, shaheen, Alisa 🙄 somehow, King, Marduk, Lars, and Miguel, Claudio all has serious arcs in the story mode. You just compare a 2D vs 3D game one takes alot of money and time the other has nothing in comparable. Just like dbzf has interaction because it's 2D, 2D takes less work. 3D doesn't.
@@shenelljohnson74 Or you can just disable them like Harada did with Baek and other characters. Ganryu stopped entering the tournament after getting dumped by Julia. Anna getting tired of catfight with her sister or introducing Yoshi/Bryan to a new rival after something interupted them. Be creative with your imagination because that how developers should be.
For all its flaws, Tekken; Bloodline treats Paul with more respect than all the games after this.
the deathfist is so satisfying ngl
I always liked the casino stage. Super awesome
Paul was badass... Now is just a clown, i don't know why, Harada.
Loving the Tekken 4 videos

Make Paul Badass Again
Hopefully Paul and Kazuyas old rivalry will at least be mentioned in t8
It wont
I'd say Paul's always been a bit of an idiot through T1-3, but it's worth to note that depsite being a bit of an idiot he still was mature enough to not run things on his own after seizing control of the Mishima Zaibatsu. He left the running to those in the know of the company and cashed in a steady paycheck. Hoewver it's kind of a bad ending since Abel is now running loose in that zaibatsu.
But still, that "ain't my style" was just perfect. REally set the stage of how he would be in T5. But what we got was... well...
I mean, just because someone is a comic relief character doesn't mean they shouldn't be respected.
Also, let's say my head canon is that Ogre deliberately waited to transform into True Ogre because he was scared shitless of facing Paul again.
Paul Phoenix is a the real legend
hopefully we'll see comic relief versions of Kazuya and Heihachi, now that their stories have ended. 😊
There are already:
1) Kuma's ending in Tekken 4.
2) Heihachi's ending in Tekken 5.
3) Lee's ending in Tekken 5.
4) Kuma's ending in Tekken 5.
5) Heihachi's ending in Tekken 6.
6) Kuma's ending in Tekken 6.
7) Lee's ending in Tekken Tag Tournament 2.
8) Shaheen's side-story ending in Tekken 7.
Nah. Jin vs Kazuya is next.
You get to a stage & I say “this one has my favourite music”......
Then the next one plays....
& then you get back to the character select menu...
I think after Tekken 4 wasn't as popular as they hoped, they threw out the baby with the bathwater. I really love the more over-the-top fantasy nature of Tekken 5, which was closer in spirit to Tekken 3 while retaining some new elements from Tekken 4, such as some of the designs and walls. However, past that point the story was no longer engaging or interesting. The shifts characters went through between 2-3 and 4 were insane, but 5 and onwards most of them are stuck in limbo usually in an endless rivalry that doesn't lead anywhere.
That said, let's take another look at Paul: He was always a bit of a buffoon. He is perhaps the world's strongest, but he always loses the title to a blunder; From missing the match due to getting stuck in traffic to leaving before Ogre's true form is revealed. Even in Tekken 4, the intro states that even people that initially liked him "grew tired of his attitude". If he had won the tournament, we see that he'd just waste away the money partying.
The problem IMO isn't that Paul is an idiot. He was always a bit of an idiot. The problem is, much like everyone else, past T4 he got Flanderized to the extreme. Characters pretty much have nothing going on for them anymore except one key trait. Even characters that get treated with more respect have very lackluster stories that don't advance anything. Most characters are narratively, and even costume design-wise, still stuck in Tekken 5, which was almost 20 years ago.
I sincerely hope that the success of Tekken 7 won't cause them to double down on ignoring the narrative for the majority of the cast fo Tekken 8, but instead use the funds to hire actual writers to flesh out, advance, or just generally make each characters story more interesting, engaging or satisfying. I want Asuka to do something with her bloodline instead of constantly fighting Lili with no pay-off. I want King to worry about something other than Marduk or A.King while the world is engulfed in war and he has all but forgotten his orphanage. I want Bryan to have any story at all other than throwing construction materials at aerial military vehicles. I can go on forever... If we need to trim down the launch roster so that each member can get more attention, I'd be okay with that, and even pay for the DLC releases that would follow.
I fully agree 👍
I think the point with Paul is that after T4 and not winning the tournament, he actually has a mental breakdown. It says that "putting his reputation on the line, he joins KoIF4 to win" so when he doesn't, he's completely broken.
May have worked if it was treated like a mental breakdown.
12:42 i love the Temple!
Paul wins the king of iron fist tournament 4, then he becames Brad Pitt!
1:34 He said it exactly like that, British accent and all.
I feel like the whole "story arc" thing you talked about @7:49 and how it's not as common in other fighting games isn't quite right. From my experience, Soul Calibur, the arcsys games, UNI, MK and Injustice are quite enjoyable as well in terms of character stories. They may not have a complete story for every single character but they've done great jobs overall. I do agree though that t4 stories are really good.
A lot of those characters don't really have arcs in those games.
To sum up the vid:
UUUUUAAAAAAAAAAAGHH!!!
It would be cool if on tekken 7 the patch in a thing where we can use previous HUDs from other tekkens like his Tekken 4 mod
What we have now is a clone. The real paul rode off into the sunset after t4 never to be seen from again.
Paul was seious that time. But some stages like the roof top in tekken 4 needs to be in tekken 7
Paul has fallen so hard from grace that in SFxTK Sakura's win quote compares him to DAN...
TO DAN HIBIKI!!
I mean i hate joke paul but dan is unironically a beast compared to bullshit like akuma and m.bison. he's like krillin where all others are so ridiculous but lets not forget he can access the satsu no hado with the kanji for father in his back. He not only developed his own martial art but if they stopped making him a joke character he'd be dangerous af
The same goes for Marshall Law. I’m a Law super fan because my dad was obsessed with Bruce Lee as I was growing up. I remember we played Tekken 5 together for the first time and he said, “Wow, they put Bruce Lee in the game…” Anyway, that’s not the point I’m trying to make. Law and Paul have always been (or maybe till around Tekken 4,) the strongest non Mishima characters. At some stage, Law even knocked out Paul in 28 seconds. It’s just said to see them reduced to comic relief. Someone email Harada to have Law and Paul back on top again..👊🏼
This revisit of Tekken 4 is very interesting, I am rarely home to catch his streams live and he doesn't read UA-cam comments right? Can anyone who watches the TMM streams ask him about possibly trying online matches using Parasec or a online build of PCSX2?, maybe we can make our own TK4 revival community.
Between tekken 4 and 5. Paul rode his bike into a tree and lost his memories except the tekken tournament and desire to be the strongest. 👍
Thats not how it goes but okay
i dont like insects but both yoshi costumes are my favourite of all time
Not just a dojo, Marshall's Dojo😁
Omg I miss Tekken 4 and 5 sooo much. They were my childhood games on of my first games Tekken and Driver parallel lines. I started to play them when I was 3 yrs old. I liked evrey character especially Marduk and their movies and the intro was just so awesome. I remember when I had a fear of when Heihachi threw Kazuya off a cliff, god I thought it was so scary when the song off the scene started to play and Heihachi just came there with his son on his hands. I even used to wear socks on my hands, wear black pants and paint red fire on the pants just to look like Jin Kazama. Ahh miss Tekken 5.
RIP serious Paul and his d142 into demolition man, that should be is rage art instead of another death fist 😔
tbh Tekken 4 looks LIT how good was it?
As a kid I thought it felt kinda slow and clunky compared to 2, 3 amd tag.
Imo the strongest thing about Paul in Tekken 4 was his d1, 4 series being able to go into full DemoMan lol. As opposed to just stopping at the elbow as the weird string it is now. :P
And idk. Even in Tekken 2 (or 3) Paul was kind of silly. One of his endings is him punching a silly hand drawn doodle of Kazuya he made. Another is him being “cool” on his Harley and then immediately getting stopped by Police. Even in Tekken 4 the story doesn’t take him seriously with how his hubris cost him fighting True Ogre and leads him to becoming a laughing stock.
I’m biased as one of the reasons I love playing Paul is how silly he is. That silliness contrasted with absolutely raw power.
With how serious Tekken’s story can get. It helps to have some comedic relief. Sure Paul may not be playing a central role in the story, but with the stories focus on the Mishima struggle (specifically on Jin) he just may not have a place with it currently. Hopefully future Tekken gives love to the rest of cast and give them their own little stories so not everything revolves around the Mishimas.
How many goofy characters we need? Almost half of the roster now either is presented as a clown or have a goofy ending.
Paul can be funny but also be taken seriously at the same time. Why can't he both?
@@suiken3149 Which characters are presented as goofballs? The presentation of most of the characters in Tekken seems to at the very least serious. Some goofy characters I could see were Paul, Law, Yoshi, Lee, Bears, Josie, and kind of Lei? The rest are seemingly treated with an ok degree of seriousness. Granted I haven't kept up with the story much and from what I heard a lot of the characters' arcade "endings" were lackluster.
I think it can be both, some of the "goofy" characters have serious story elements for them. Yoshi's rivalry with Bryan and Lei's career as a top cop come to mind. But the larger problem imo is that most characters not directly related to Jin or a Mishima are largely sidelined now. The storytelling is focusing on a more focused narrative with the Devil Gene and stuff but at the cost of the roster barely getting anything when it comes to their personal stories.
@@TekkenShazam Bob, Paul as he is now, Lei, Lucky, Josie, Kuma, Yoshi's T7, Asuka, Lili, Xiaoyu, Shaheen, Jack-7, Lee and now Eddy and Julia. I said their endings, if not their personalities.
Even the new comers who have serious background looks goofy in their costumes. Claudio looks like he belongs in Final Fantasy. Alisa is your generic moeblob character. Master Raven looks like your cosplayer on comic conventions.
That's almost half of the roster.
