DENZEL WASHINGTON (b. 1954) is an American actor, director, and producer. He has been described as an actor who reconfigured "the concept of classic movie stardom," mostly associating with characters defined by their grace, dignity, humanity, and inner strength. He has received seventeen NAACP Image Awards, three Golden Globe Awards, one Tony Award, and two Academy Awards from nine nominations: Best Supporting Actor for playing Union Army soldier Private Trip in the historical drama film Glory (1989), and Best Actor for his role as corrupt detective Alonzo Harris in the crime thriller Training Day (2001). In 2020, The New York Times ranked him as the greatest actor of the twenty-first century. Washington has received much critical acclaim for his film work since the 1980s, including his portrayals of real-life figures such as South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko in Cry Freedom (1987), civil rights activist and Muslim minister Malcolm X in Malcolm X (1992), boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter in The Hurricane (1999), football coach Herman Boone in Remember the Titans (2000), poet and educator Melvin B. Tolson in The Great Debaters (2007), and drug kingpin Frank Lucas in American Gangster (2007). He has been a featured actor in films produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and has been a frequent collaborator of directors Spike Lee, Antoine Fuqua, and Tony Scott. In 2016, he received the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards.
TONY SCOTT (1944 - 2012) was an English film director and producer. He was known for directing highly successful action and thriller films such as Top Gun (1986), Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), Days of Thunder (1990), The Last Boy Scout (1991), True Romance (1993), Crimson Tide (1995), Enemy of the State (1998), Man on Fire (2004), Déjà Vu (2006), and Unstoppable (2010).
Scott was the younger brother of film director Sir Ridley Scott. They both graduated from the Royal College of Art in London, and were among a generation of British film directors who were successful in Hollywood having started their careers making television commercials. In 1995, both Tony and Ridley received the BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Contribution To Cinema. In 2010, they received the BAFTA Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Filmed Entertainment. After Scott's suicide in 2012, many actors paid tribute to him, including Tom Cruise, Christian Slater, Val Kilmer, Eddie Murphy, Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman, Elijah Wood, Dane Cook, Dwayne Johnson, Stephen Fry, Peter Fonda and Keira Knightley, as well as musical collaborators Hybrid. Cruise complimented Scott as "a creative visionary whose mark on film is immeasurable." Denzel Washington, Scott's most frequent acting collaborator, said, "Tony Scott was a great director, a genuine friend and it is unfathomable to think that he is now gone." Directors UK chairman Charles Sturridge said Scott was "a brilliant British director with an extraordinary ability to create energy on screen, both in action and in the creation of character."
MAN ON FIRE is a 2004 action thriller film directed by Tony Scott from a screenplay by Brian Helgeland, and based on the 1980 novel of the same name by A. J. Quinnell. The novel had previously been adapted into a feature film in 1987. In this film, Denzel Washington portrays John Creasy, a despondent, alcoholic former U.S. Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance Captain and CIA Special Activities Division officer - turned bodyguard, who goes on a revenge rampage after his charge, nine-year-old Lupita "Pita" Ramos (Dakota Fanning), is abducted in Mexico City. The supporting cast includes Christopher Walken, Radha Mitchell, Giancarlo Giannini, Marc Anthony, Rachel Ticotin and Mickey Rourke.

Tony and Denzel were cinematic soulmates. The Equalizer movies are super cool throwbacks but no one could direct Denzel in an action thriller like Tony Scott, every sentence uttered, every frame composed, Tony and Denzel just GOT each other and those types of duos are rarer to get in Hollywood.

I watched Man on Fire years ago. I remember the scenery being beautiful. And I remember I really enjoyed the story but I couldn’t quite remember it. I went back and watched it last night and I can honestly say it is definitely one of the best films I’ve ever seen. IT HAS EVERYTHING. Going to watch it again today with my partner who hasn’t seen it and I know I’ll pick up something more about the characters again.

To hear Tony Scott talk about seeing Denzels son playing “American” football, which must of been the son who starred in Tenet is wonderful.

I was/am a massive Tony Scott fan. Saw this twice in theaters and will never forget it. What a wild and powerful revenge flick. Arguably Scott’s best work along with True Romance and Crimson Tide. Denzel is a powerhouse as per usual. Just an amazing piece of filmmaking. Thanks for posting this.

Just rewatched the movie for the first time. Such a good movie. Denzel firing all cylinders and Scott made his big comeback after a few misfires. The hole cast is really good. Never new that Tony was British until now. Such a unique director with his own style.

This is one tony Scott’s best movie he directed . He’s made some really good movies Beverly Hills cop top gun true romance man on fire and deja vu he was my favourite director. Out of all his movies he directed this one is my favourite. I’d say that he mad better movies than his brother Ridley Scott but Ridley Scott is a good director and has made good movies one including denzel Washington’s American gangster.

Tony Scott was “popcorn movies”. Ridley directed Epics and genre defining films. Apart from Kubrick, Ridley left the blueprint for Sci-Fi films.

I watch Jw & think about how I wish I was watching Man on Fire lol chest tight, frozen at times, pacing at times, literal tears at the end. MoF is heavy I feel, while John Wick is def a cool action flick. I see what you’re sayin

Man on Fire was Denzel's Unforgiven but perhaps needed to follow a string of movies like the 3 Equalizer films to get appreciated in that way. It was so dark and brutal, but the script, acting, directing, and editing were superb. It is only now getting it's due attention.
