Welcome to the Heavey Spoilers show, I'm our host Paul aka the biggest Wickhead on youtube and this video we're gonna be talking about a number of the big things that we've learned about John Wick Chapter 4 since it's release.
In this video we're gonna be talking about the alternate ending that they considered using and also how the cast and crew reacted to Lance Reddicks passing.
I wanna get straight into it but as we're talking about the original ending we have to give a spoiler alert up top before we get into it. This scene was shot as an add on to what we saw at the end and it may ruin the film if you haven't checked it out yet. With all that out the way, huge thank you for clicking this, now let's get into John Wick Chapter 4.
Ok so the movie ends with John taking down the Marquis but in order to do that he has to goade him into taking part in the duel itself. In his arrogance once he sees that John is seeminly beaten he decides to take Caine's weapon and he goes to shoot Johh. Wick didn't actually fire during the last shot of the duel and he uses this opportunity to kill the Marquis and free not only himself but also Caine and his daughter.
However he's mortally wounded and he ends up dying on the steps of the church after uttering his wifes name Helen.
Now many people were shocked to see this scene playing out as Wick was seen as this invincible and unstoppable terminator that was the very personification of the boogeyman.

Because of this many people have speculated over the last couple of days that Wick is actually still alive and there's been a lot of wires getting crossed over whether he'll return or not. There was a fifth John Wick film greenlit along with four and thus there's been talk that they just haven't announced that so people go with the ending. Wick is also due to appear in the Ana De Armas spin-off the Ballerina and you can see how rumours can spread.

They could always do prequels.
Cane probably avoided shooting him in his vital parts, plus what happened to the pit an his beloved car
It's critical that everyone thinks Wick is dead, so he can stop losing his friends. The fun part will be how can he change this assassin network for the better, like to just barely avoid WW3 ( in a nutshell, my screenplay I wrote years ago ) .
@@jonathanperry8331 - If they do prequels, I hope to god that the director does not have John Wick fall off another multi-storey building and then walk it off like it was nothing. John Wick is an assassin, not a superhero.
They could do 2-3 more movies (prequel) starring Keanu. From his time in Ruska Roma up to his "impossible task" when he left everything behind for his wife. We'll get to see more Marcus, Aurelio, Winston, Sofia, Shimazu, Caine, etc. I expect the impossible task to be as intense as Chapter 4 since that's when he got his nickname Babayaga. Plus, it's a better sendoff for the franchise since it will end in a happy note with John and his wife finally together as a loving wife and a 'loving husband'.
When Charon said "It's been a pleasure.." It was a gut punch knowing he passed
Charon's words reminds me when Wallace Henry Hartley, violinist and bandleader aboard the RMS TITANIC, uttered the words, "Gentleman, it has been a privilege and honor playing with you tonight." 15April1912.

The coincidence of his passing and his characters Charon's death is unfortunate
Yeah that was bitter sweet
I always feel weird when I wonder why I should feel something for a celebrity. The overwhelming majority of us never knew Lance Reddick in person, but here's a man who put himself out there and on screen to entertain the world and pursued his passion. From the sounds of it he was a very good person and well-liked among his peers. On a very down to earth, very human level, it's sad. I can't imagine what his family and friends are going through, but I hope somewhere they are able to find a little joy in that so many people really enjoyed seeing their son, their husband, and father on screen. While we can't feel the depth of their pain, so many of us I'm sure took a moment of solemnity for Lance when that scene hit.
@@Mike23321 usually when I get upset about an actor/celebrity/ or even a person I don't know, I feel empathetic for their family and loved ones, and if they contributed to society whether it's entertaining or compassion I'll be upset.. like Chadwick or Robin Williams, or even Kobe... If they were just horrible human beings then....meh...

My favorite part of the John wick series is they explain just enough of the lore to keep in super intreguing while also making it so you have no idea what’s going on.
Ahh... yes: the DarkSouls approach to Lore/World Building. In fact... someone call Miyazaki: We need a John Wick DarkSouls!!
Dude for real! And we discover more of their world but only leads to more questions. It feels so immersive and mysterious but fun.
The reason I believe John Wick is still alive is because of the way the dog reacts at the cemetery. He kind of whimpers and looks off in a different direction...as if he senses him near by

@@R2LEE2 John wick 5 is already green lit bud. Keanu said that if the movie does well he’ll continue to do more. But this movie took a toll on him and he wants to take a break. You can google this for yourself. They ended the movie like this so that if it doesn’t do well they can end the character but also keep it open if audiences and Keanu want more. So he could be dead or he could come back
That, and Winston stating "who knows". There are subtle hints, it's quite naive to think they'd simply kill off the primary protagonist of the most successful action franchise in recent history. Even the makers of this video only know what's currently available to speculate upon

As soon as he told Winston, "John, A loving husband. That's what I want on mine"... I knew he was going to die in this movie. That was a hell of a line to foreshadow and not pay off...
That and the fact they foreshadowed his death with another line being that John is a ghost, having nothing to live for compared to Caine and his daughter

I think they faked Wick's death for a couple reasons:
1. so he can enjoy his hard earned freedom in true peace, the simbolism of John Wick is dead, but John the loving husband is still alive and well... but where? ;)
2. so they can focus on branching off the Wick-verse with Ballerina, the Continental and now Caine, pretty sure they still want to do JW5 but they want to take their time on that
3. if you look at Wick's dog at his funeral, the dog is looking at another direction, as sensing his master alive somewhere near
With keanu want to make constantine this make sense for me. Make a route around ballerina, the continental and caine. He need a break for his 5th movie that i can say last one this time
Also if you watch the first John Wick the very first scene of him is very similar to the last scene of him in chapter 4 even having a similar wound
I swear I seen a clip that John is way far back at his funeral and he had that brown jacket he wore in the 1st. And an umbrella. With the height and the jacket. It's him!! I won't watch without Keanu!!! I have yet to watch to film but I'm so excited

I always assumed John's story would end with him undoing the high table by either destroying the entire underworld or sitting at the head of the table.
That is exactly what I was thinking as well haha
After the 3rd movie ending scene, I thought 4 would be all about John bringing down the high table

I like John being alive being a question that's never answered. It truly makes him Baba Yaga if people are questioning if he's really out there or not, a true legend.

Apparently there was supposed to be another hour of film that got cut down, and my theory is that it probably had a "hobo life" segment, a scene where John gets his car back, and a scene of him killing various High Table members before finally getting to the Elder. (This includes the Judicator from the 3rd movie)
It's just weird how the movie started with quite a few time skips and no explanation behind it.

Lance Reddick. RIP. Graduated with a degree for Music Composition from The Eastman School so when you see him in Bosch playing piano , that was him. Eastman is one of the premier music schools in the world. What a pro . Love and respect to all who held you dear Lance.
The part everyone is ignoring that bothers me is he chose to die. He was tired and knew his life was becoming a huge toll on others he was ready to truly be free and join his wife in death

thats what i'm thinking....we didnt se him die we just saw him on the steps and then his gravestone....since he asked winston take me home i think that meant he's finally free so fake his death obviously & he's a free man to be unbothered and live his life
I believe that JW 5 will be a PREQUEL, explaining how he got out and how/why his wife died. The brilliance of this is that the cast of heroes and villains we've seen in 1 to 4 (especially Santini) will appear again, and we'll instantly know who they are. BTW I think Tracker is Sofia's son, so another movie there.
My preferred story for 5 is to keep him dead, but someone will try to impersonate his legends. If they insist on keeping John alive, he can play guardian angel to his friends and breaking his curse of being the 'touch of death' of the series.

Lance Reddick’s character stood for something that is trustworthy and a steady hand. Someone Wick could count that has his back and the best person to look after his dog.. that really says something. I am going to miss him so much in future JW movies

This movie could never make me cry. Artificial intelligence did, though. That movie is really sad.
What I really love about these films is every installment is a masterpiece. All the films put together is unlike anything we've ever seen. Kudos to everyone for keeping these films true to themselves and keeping the ending in place so we can say our proper goodbye's. Hollywood could learn a thing or two from these films
My sons saw it yesterday and said it was amazing, especially the action scenes. They’re still not buying the ending, but did say they thought there were 2 other actors in the movie, that could continue with the series.
Your sons were right.
There's a lot of slow bits at the start but it's where they're setting everything up.
There's an end credits scene that involves other characters introduced in this movie.

@@Tm3films One of the core creative people on these movies (director Chad Stahelski) said in interviews the only way he ever saw the story ending was with John's death. Even if it turns out it was faked, with all of the people John has killed, it's somewhat inevitable that the family member or friend of someone he's killed would come back at him for revenge.
That's part of the point of the end credits scene.

I do like the idea of John dying. It closes the story and provides a reading of the wick series as one man’s death wish entangled with a desire to destroy a system that had caused him and so many others immeasurable pain.

I was a huge fan of Lance... He simply had an incredible air about him... He brought tremendous value to the John Wick series; he was perfectly cast, and he will be missed.
Although John Wick 4 is the most fun of all in the franchise, but 1 and 2 will always be my top fav.
I think the ending they went with was the best one. I'm glad the series got to conclude, and not just be draged along for too long. It's my favorite of the franchise. Wich is pretty cool since i was initaly disappointed when Chapter 3 ended in the same place that Chapter 2 ended. But this film was just pure perfection. A nealy 3 hour run time had me a bit worried. But i fealt every bit of it was justified. It's one of the best action movies i've ever watched. And i'm beyond happy with it.
I also got the dedication to Lance at the end. Wich made me Happy to see. He was a great actor. And he was Fantastic in the role. It was really sad to see him die in the film. But from what i've heard, he was really proud of this film. So i think it was important to keep it as it was when he was happy with it. Can't wait to see the spin-offs. I hope they can keep up the quality that the series has reached.
My screening had the Lance dedication (San Francisco, CA) and I’m a big Destiny 2 player so it honestly meant a lot. RIP Commander Zavala, eyes up guardian😢

I have an alternative that says Chapter 5 will happen with John. Hear me out. If the Journey to the duel represents the stations of the cross.The beatings from Pontius was the gauntlet. He fell three times… twice up the stairs and once on the third bullet. Even his clothes are taken from him at the top of Golgotha (the church). Winston is technically Judas when he betrays him in Chapter 3. He bowed his head and said Helen (it is finished). Then we saw the tomb. But what happens after. In 3 days he comes back. His journey isn’t over.He’s got another movie which creates a new movement (Christianity) that over throws the previous regime. He created an idea that you can be redeemed and through his death that the tracker saw, he can spread the word… the first apostle. honestly when you consider this, they only need the idea of John in Chapter 5, and the strike down of the apostles by the table, but eventually the families buy into the idea that the table is fallible and the table falls apart.... thoughts?

Watched JW4 in a small town theatre here in New Zealand, 8pm Fri 24th and the dedication to Lance was there on screen before the movie started. Great effort to do so and appreciated by the audience
Seeing this on imax was probably the greatest cinema experience of my life. Seriously it was amazing.
On his death, he let himself die. His mission was done and he was out. He could rest in peace. He could have easily continued if he wanted to.
Paul just saw this movie with 7 of my good friends Sunday 3pm showing and it was packed cinema all seats full in IMAX in Boston, it was great 4th installment of the franchise for sure and I’m going to see it again this Tuesday because when your seeing it with a packed audience you miss certain things with the crowd clapping or cheering! But this movie is a must watch over again! Great breakdown from the breakdown 👑 Paul!!!!!!
They basically laid the groundwork for a universe of movies. You have the Ballerina, the Continental, Caine and how he got to where he ism and maybe the history of the high table.

None of those movies have a chance of igniting like the main series did, and even they weren't box office breaking movies. If they go the spin-off route they'd best keep budgets low because I don't think the money will be rolling in for them.

I think John isn't dead but John Wick is. The whole point is that no matter what, he could never truly get out as long as John Wick was alive. So John Wick had to die. John now gets to live on in peace.
Exactly what I was gonna post, John Wick is dead but Jonathan is very much alive. But the boogeyman can always return, especially sense his friend may have possibly been killed with that end credit scene

For Lance Reddick made it into the ending of the cut I saw. I was pleasantly surprised, (that it made it), and explained to my movie buddy that Lance had died just a few days ago, and how impressed I was that the studio was able to add that in so quickly. I like the ambiguity of the ending. It can go either way, and we may find John in some podunk town in 10 years walking dogs at the local animal shelter.
I hope the alternative cut is on physical and digital media. It was clear the cast loved Lance. And the RIP was on the cinema screen I saw
While Chad says he's dead, Keanu claims to think he's still alive. I'm kinda in the middle and am willing to believe either side, and I like that ambiguity. Especially since Winston's line in chapter 3 about John needing to decide to be Baba Yaga or continue to be John Wick, the who loved and was loved by his wife. So, you could make the claim that John lived and it was Baba Yaga that died.

Saw it opening night and it didn't disappoint. It was exactly what I hoped, nonstop action with moments of humor. Donnie Yen's character was awesome and the other guy that was in Last Samurai.
The other guy is Hiroyuki Sanada - an excellent actor!

This ending is perfect. In the first movie he was a man hellbent on revenge and was almost hoping to die in the process. And the last movie was him fighting to stay alive long enough to fix some of his more selfish actions. And then finally die at peace.
That would have been a perfect ending. Him walking with his dog.

Sad to hear what the team went through (and good & right to admit that it's nothing compared to Lance's family's loss and feelings dealing with it directly) was a fun ride, Reddick was a fabulous actor, did these films a great service. Not sure if I saw the bit at the end, as we needed to book it out fast due to time constraints. Good to hear from ya Paul, looking forward to more HS works!
John Wick Chapter 4 is Peak Fiction
Not really fiction considering how possible this all is
I'd say I would've preferred something like him being injured many times prior to the duel, playing the duel similarly to how it was, and when it ended, with a ragged John slumping on the stairs, it cuts to his eventual recovery but having lost something, like having his shooting hand/arm amputated due to the injuries, signifying he lost the hand/arm he used to kill lots of people and finally spend time with the dog and finally be able to go to sleep in a comfortable bed just like with Daisy in chapter 1 but this time with a warmer color filter and the pitbull at his side, just for them to wake up and walk into a warm sunrise and move on. Just a tiny fantasy.
I really didn't want him to die, although it was foreshadowed with the "loving husband" comment to Winston. Man, that movie got me on the edge for almost three hours, and after the shock and the adrenaline, I cried, badly.
It felt bad to have john go through all that shit to be free, to die alone and not being able to say goodbye to his dog.
That said, I don't wish for them to deux ex bullshit machina revive him magically; it'd take all the impact away from this ending, but I really feel sad for him; And that's without counting the post-credits scene where it is pretty much clear Akira went for the kill against Caine, when he and his daughter were finally set free thanks to John. It leaves some emptiness in my heart.
I agree with having John finally find peace and be with his wife and beagle. But there are so many potential story lines in this universe that I hope the director comes up with something awesome.
I preferred the ending we got. It really could only honestly end that way. I'm surprised I haven't heard more theories pop up about Winston being Wick's biological father.

Great review of what has gone into decision to end the film as they did. Thank you! Lance was great as always in Ch 4, and I wish his family peace and comfort through a difficult time.
Would've been nice but the ending they picked made the most sense with the film building up the fact that Wick can only have peace with Death. Love the film and excited for Ballerina and hope to get the trailer this month.
I don’t think John is really dead. John truly just wanted to be left alone to grieve his wife so now that he’s finally free of the table he can morn in peace and be left alone. But, I do believe John Wick will be back…

Phenomenal movie. I think it had the best ending the series could have planned for. They left it vague and subtle enough to have a "happy" ending for John. I hope the creators keep expanding the franchise with different characters but leave Wick to rest in peace, alive or dead.
I get the feeling that John is still alive, given his wound & all the times he fell from numerous high places especially in Chapter 3, John does deserve to rest but then why would they pan to his grave site even though he had asked to be taken home by Winston? Somehow I do believe there will be a chapter 5 being people have been known to fake their death & there's still certain issues to be resolved. Respect to Lance Reddick, I like many will miss him immensely being that he added so much to the story from it's inception. Here's hoping that there will be Chapter 5.
I am not sure how he was mortally wounded. None of those hits were kill shots. Stomach left side, not right (liver) and too low for the lung, shoulder and arm. Immediate medical attention could of easily saved him. I won’t be surprised to see him show up in a spin off. Amazing movie by the way.
Yep, I’m a trauma surgical tech, non of those wounds were mortal, just stop bleeding and get to a surgeon
He chose to die and bleed out though. He asked Winston to take him home. With such a big focus on death, consequences, the never ending cycle of vengeance (as hinted in the post credit scene) throughout the film, it would cheapen everything in ch. 4 if they brought John back. Loved Keanu in the role, but they’ve tied up his storyline perfectly and set the stage for the other side characters to continue the story.
I could see them doing prequels to have Keanu reprise his role. But having his death by final makes sense from a narrative perspective.

Honestly, my favorite part of any John wick movie is when him and the concierge both grab shotguns in the 3rd one and start murdering the shit out of people. Its extra funny when the concierge pushes up his glasses while his hand is shaking. Great scene, RIP Lance.

Lance was an amazing actor. I've seen him in many movies and tv shows over the years. Saw him on young sheldon the other day as I was flipping the tv.
I think that the ending that they have in the theaters is the right ending for John Wick. Thank you Lance for the great performance as Charon, rest well Commander.
I watched it day 1 and it had the dedication. Man sometimes small town cinemas are great!
I think the ending is fitting, besides now we have tracker and the Osaka concierge as possible new spin offs

I personally would like to see a chapter 5 which would be a prequel showing his life before he met Helen and how he got out and then Helen’s death. It would be neat to watch exactly what he did to get out and then make you want to watch part 1 again.
The director was absolutely right to realise that the story has run its course and to wrap up the series before it becomes a repetition of the same stuff they've already done.

I saw the dedication to Lance when I went to see it opening weekend.
As John walks down the stairs of the church before "dying", we can see 2 bullet wounds. One "below the floating rib" and one on 'his' left shoulder "just past his collar bone".
Remember there doctor who helped him? That's exactly where he also shot there doctor but left him alive.
Literally the exact same spots.
Lance was a phenomenal actor and will be greatly missed. He had such a wide range of emotion and character in his performances, and he always connected with cast and crew. The first role I saw him play was Matthew Abaddon in ABC's Lost. It's still my favorite series of all time. I tend to follow the careers of the writers and cast just to see how they're doing now and what projects they're working on. I was so excited when I saw Lance as The Continental Concierge opening weekend for John Wick 1 way back in 2014. Having Lance in the cast for anything was truly a seal of quality; you felt the time, money, and effort was all worth it knowing that he was a part of it.
I think the headstone reading “loving husband” is referring to that part of John that is now dead, only the killer remains. The dog looking off in a different direction I believe hints at his return

Saw it a few days ago in Imax. I'm going to be going again next week to watch it again since I have a 3 movie a week subscription. Will probably see it a few more times to help boost its numbers because I loved the film.

Does anyone saw the dog looking elsewhere for 1 seconds when they are speaking front of the tomb ? Like he was seeing his master somewhere out the camera. I just had the impression john wick is Dead, but John will live somewhere else a new life.
The bodies he buried that day laid the foundation to what we are today... I thought it was just a hype but he proved it RESPECTS

They can still do one final movie, about what John did to get out the first time. Its heavily referenced in the first and second, and briefly in the third, and involved Santiano, Tarasov and others. Chapter 5 is listed on imdb still, but so was the fourth Ridley Scott Alien movie and Disney made sure to kill that - so who knows. He struck a blow to the high table and its rules with chapter 4 and it makes sense that he was given his peace, so I'm happy as it is, but would love to see what he did prior to everything.

Ive never seen Wick this way. He's gotten the shit kicked out of him several times and has survived by sheer luck or the help of others as well.
Great series of movies and a great ending to John's saga. Hope they don't bring him back. Rest In Peace Lance.
And on a related note, Riddick may be in the after life, but I will always remember every word, gesture, and intonation in telling the deputy commissioner to shove it in response to his possible improprieties in the Eastern District in the first season of the wire. That scene should be studied by all working in movies and tv.
I'm kind of glad that we got the ending we did. John Wick had literally lost everything he had. His wife, his home, friends, the Continental. All he had left was 3 friends & his dog that he could leave with them. He had nothing left & nothing to live for. His revenge was complete & he was free from the High Table hunting him & freed his friend too. His life was complete. He didn't need to fight & kill anymore and could let go........ So he did. RIP John Wick

I like the ending it currently has. Very reminiscent of Spike's ending in Cowboy Bebop(anime not Netflix series) . Both characters have a similar story and the ending is the peace they finally deserve... Aside from that I think we forget Keanu is 58, these stunts must be taking a toll on him. If this is the end I don't mind and if they do decide to do another I won't mind that either.

As a 62 year old I can say with certainty that you can stay fit and active. He's trim and healthy and not as old as Tom Cruise who's nearly my age. Tom's still going strong!
