Gaming History: Space Empires 4 - "A forgotten legend"

- Опубліковано 13 жов 2024
- Back when a demo was a thing you’d find on a CD in a thing called a Magazine, made with paper and ink, there was a game called Space Empires 4. And it had one of the most joyous demos of all time. And the full game wasn’t half bad either!

I think SE4 is the best computer game ever made. I still play it a lot today, in 2022.
I loved this game until I got the integer overflow error on a game i was playing for a long time. Still great though.
Strangely, I never played SE4, at least that I recall. I played 3 and 5. They are favorites for the reasons stated here, though the ideal for me would be a combination between the two. As I recall, SE3 ship construction was laying out a hull and populating, so ships could be captured, destroyed, or pressed into service incomplete, and I rather enjoyed that. SE5 introduced real time tactical combat, which though quite clunky was a lot more fun for me, especially when people started uploading custom models, so my ideal fleet had a combination of Klingon cruisers for direct fire, seeking ships, assault ships, etc, and Battlestar Galactica models for fighter carriers.
History of space navy combat/4x I've played: Invasion Orion (TRS-80, 1981, tactical only), Star Fleet 1: The War Begins (Amiga, tactical only), Reach for the Stars, Spaceward Ho!, Stellar Crusade (Amiga), Armada 2525, Ascendancy, Stars!, Master of Orion 2 and 3 and Reboot, FreeOrion, Galactic Civilizations, Imperium Galactica 1&2, Space Empires 3 & 5, Emperor of the Fading Suns, Star Wars Empire at War, Sword of the Stars, Endless Space, Stellaris. My favorites are MoO 2, SE5, EFS, Ascendancy. Honorable mention to the first one, Invasion Orion, for managing to be a fun tactical game crammed into a 4k computer with no pixel graphics and written in BASIC.
And then, years after the series died, it just spawned one of the craziest board games there are. Instead of boardgamizing it, Space Empire 4x is literally a Space Empires game printed out on cardboard counters. Love both the digital and analog incarnation of this.
Distant World: Universe is probably the only game that has a similar scale to this one. Excellent 4x game.
This video has a criminal lack of views. Without it I never would have discovered Space Empires 4.
Ah, nice. I remember a similar experience with Space Empires III, and its demo. I played SEIV for a fair amount of time, but nothing compared to its predecessor, and its successor SEV. This video brings back memories.
A early game system with nothing but asteroids becomes a fucking gold mine once you get the tech to build planets. Then those asteroids become some of the most valuable worlds you can own.
I downloaded SPEG 4 from an FTP one night, because it was relatively small. No idea what it even was, until I'd installed it. Had no documentation, no readme file, nothing. It took me forever to figure out how to play it. I almost gave up on it. But I was sick for a few weeks and I remember I got into the game properly and suddenly everything made sense, and I played it constantly for months. Eventually, it because far too easy, I'd figured out the exploits and the challenge was gone.
The only other game of this type I ever got into was Galactic Civilizations 2 and it was pretty good for a while!
Fantastic game, brings me back. I used to love capturing ships, bringing them back then deconstructing them and getting the other empires tech. Fabulous.
i started on space empires 2, i miss these games
I once went deep on ships, cloaking, and stellar manipulation, and after hundreds of turns of war on the edges of my empire, I demanded that all other species surrender. Next turn, only one surrendered, all the rest denied. Next turn, all the stars in the galaxy owned by those that didn't surrender went supernova and obliterated all my enemies. Of course, I had the tech to recondense stars and rebuild planets, so free realestate, so hahahaha
I loved this game had mines. I was always laying them over the jump points.
I started with a demo as well, played it for years then I got full one on steam a decade later. Absolutely love this game.
My favorite series you do is finally back! Thank you :)
One correction, as mentioned on the discord server, they were BMP files, not PNG files :D
Still play this amazing game 2022
I spend more time designing ships in 4X games then anything but I've never gotten close to the five hour for a single design mark. Of course I usually have a ton of different Frigate and Escort classes with larger ships reserved for special roles or weapons to big to fit on a Frigate hull..
Edit: I usually design a new set of ships every three or four research projects in at least two or three tech types.. I never design any ships until I start unlocking some of the various energy weapon types because I hate the trend in modern scifi to go all in on projectile weapons instead of using energy weapons. I love Space Empires IV but I actually first played the sharware version Space Empires II in the mid 90s and someone got me the registered version a year or so later. . I didn't try Space Empires III until GOG re-released it because I never saw it in stores so I didn't know there was a third game until I saw IV at Walmart.
I wish GOG would release Space Empires: Starfury which is a spinoff RPG where you play as a ship captain in Space Empires flying around taking on missions and upgrading your ship or buying a new one and leveling up your captain which gives you attribute points to distribute.
This is a great review.
Nostalgia channel strikes again! I like it :)
Excellent video. Great tribute to a great game.
There is still a group of people playing nodded versions of this game now in multiplayer. mods are still being worked on as well. See the pbw2 website
Ah, the feelings. A great game, ups, a great demo ;)
This is a great game, plays best on Win98, ships move too fast or too slow otherwise. I had some very tense early to mid games with this where the AI kept me under pressure the whole time. Late game is not much of a challenge but early on its great & you can follow so many different tactics & strategies & do lots of different things. Ship design is great, you have a lot of freedom. SE5 is also very good.
My man you should make a guide video for this, or maybe play it on your streams.
Your vids have not been in my subs for nearly a year. I thought you had disappeared til I saw this.
I used to love SE4, and then 5 as well. My only disappointment was the AI was so bad. I mean, stupid bad. Seemed it was always good at first, but after a while, it was obvious it didn't understand long term decisions. Still, Im contemplating playing it again. Thanks for the video....your personality is great.
You should try Space Empires V
Have you played the board game? From GMT?
Yeeeessssssssss!
And that thumbs down guy, what the hell~ reflect son, reflect!
On the topic of space 4x games, do Armada 2526
What is a trustworthy source of the demo?
Endless Space was such a disappointment. I thought it could be good, because Endless Legend which is the fantasy strategy game, was really good (after some mods). But no, it sucks, totally lack this kind of depth.
My fav space 4X was Reach For The Stars for Amiga.
This is all fine, but good god was it dead boring and lacking in any sort of variety or imagination. Armor I, Armor II, Armor III, Armor IV...Laser I, Laser II, Laser III, Laser XXXIVVVVCCC...**yawn**
Now, MOO2 had armor-piercers, shield-depleters, radiation troop-killers, spinners so slow enemy ships could not turn fast enough, mirv missiles, torpedoes, boarding troops, tractor beams...i dont think any other 4x series ever had so many choices and options, no, everyone it seems is just happy with their Laser I, Laser II, Laser III...**spit**
I love my shield generator VIII
Well i guess they removed that to simplify the game. Because I played Space Empires 3 not 4 and you could design a ship with weapons that only targeted Weapons, Engines, and Shields. This made it easy to capture enemy vessels with boarding parties.
@@saintnick6598 nah it wasn't removed, this video just doesn't do a great job showing off any of the tech and karry doesn't know anything about SEIV
@@astrokie9723 Apart from playing it for a year, i guess i dont. And i'm all the better for it.
Great video, thank you.
