LOVE a 1953 Ford. First car I had was a '53 Ford Ranch Wagon. I had a job pumping gas, cleaning windows, and brushing out cars at a service station. The old Ford had been sitting behind the station under an oak tree for about a decade. The owner gave it to me when I was getting ready to turn sixteen. My dad and I got the thing running and painted it on my birthday. Coolest car in the high school parking lot... Thanks for shaking up the memories...
My buddies had these and we put many miles cruzin' around our hometown, Owensboro, KY. Wish I had a $ bill for every mile I rode in one!! Good ol' cars.
I had a 52 just like this one. A little rot in drivers side floor, surface rust elsewhere. Flathead and three on the tree. Fixed the rust and painted it silver metallic. Great car!
My first car was a 53 Ford Flathead with the Fordamatic trans. Thanks for rescuing this one. I really enjoy your videos. From Brighton, Tn. Thanks to you and your crew for rescuing all the old and forgotten cars.
I love it when old cars like this get saved. Its awesome. I hope to save one sometimes in the next couple years and use it as my daily driver. I'd drive it to school everyday!
G'day.! just came across your video, it brought back a lot of memories for me. I had a 53 customline when i was 17, it was known as the Anniversary model in Australia. The flathead had a great note when it was idling, an unmistakeable customline burble. John, Perth, Western Australia.
Nice find! I'm a Ford guy and would have loved to get that car. The V8 flattys are fun to play with as well. The 49 and 50s are also a favorite. Looks like you are in the right place to find this stuff. Around here everything is very picked over or it's so bad it will crumble if you move it. Here in Wis it's like living in a salt mine, everything gets devoured by the salt if it ever goes out in winter. If we get 8" of snow, people expect to be able to drive the speed limit within a few hours so the county keeps laying on the salt until the road is bare. Great, now I can go fast but in a few years the seat falls through the floor! Go figure. Keep um comming. Thanks!
I had a 56 Ranch Wagon once. It had had a hard life, but it ran like champ. Six cylinder, three speed manual. Wish I could find another one like it. Great cars.
Gracious sakes! We had one exactly like that when I was 14 in 1965. Same color and all! Ours had a six cylinder that was really fast! I loved that car!
This is so cool. When I was a kid, a 56 sidevalve Cusso lived next door to me. A daily driver (and rough) it sold for a few hundred bucks. Nowadays, if you find one, people have restored them and put 351 Clevelands in them. Worth megabucks.
I'm sure you've discovered the following info by now... But, back then, a lot of aerospace themes were present in the automobiles ... The '53 had several ... The jet hood ornament ... The Spinner grill, represented an airplane propeller in action, as the center bullet was, well, the center, and the black indents just to the side of the center represented the spiral of a spinning propeller, and the sides of the grills were of course the propeller... The chrome trim parts behind the doors, represent a jet flying with contrail behind... The tail lights are close to looking like the exhaust portion of a jet engine ... BTW, I had '53 Customline, two door, flathead V8 for about 14 years.... Best regards, always like your clips, and your humor ...
I remember when 53 Fords were brand new. Ford's never went out of style until the last twenty years or so. I think you will be happy with it. I know I would. Keep us posted on your efforts to get it running again. I can't look at these old cars without wondering what brought them to their current circumstances
That's nice! Flat head may just surprize you, I had one in an "orchard" truck that sat for what must have been a very long time. It took a week to clean out, and re-gasket but it fired right away once fluids were changed! Good find!
Wow!! That's one very solid looking car!! The hood was a little "tweaked" in one shot but the door gaps looked remarkably even and all the body lines were very straight. Didn't appear to be much rust and/or dent'age either. Very nice find. Looked like quite a bit of "stuff" was missing from the motor but at least the plugs were still closing up the cylinders. Anxious to hear this one run. ;o)
'53 Ford was our be loved family car from '56 to '62. It was the best car our family ever had. It was very dependable. It didn't has a radio, or a passenger side sun visor. When we went on trips the whole family would sing songs.
This car looks amazing . I am sure its worth any where from $4500 to $6000 here in Pa . love the videos and a pointy one again to you guy's . Ray in Pa U.S.A.
What a great find! Of course I haven't seen any floors yet but the body looks still quite solid? And a Flathead V8 is always nice to have, good it's still all there! Looking forward to see another "Will it run?" video soon. :)
Remarkably rust free aye? I think the back seat radio was an accessory from J.C. Whitney, goes with the baby moons and package tray! Nice find...it'll buff out real good. 😜😂
Nice!! I really enjoy your videos. You're getting quite a collection of nice old beauties. I'm looking forward to seeing this one run (hopefully) and seeing the Kaiser on the road. Keep up the good work! !
i think we had a '51 back in the late '50's early 60's. no trim that i can remember, pretty plain jane car, 3 speed on the column was kinda sticky. i remember dad getting under the car to giggle the linkage. i think it was painted the same color as your car. we drove it to the "Lake of the Woods" for a vacation of a lifetime for me.
So glad to see you with a Ford & of all the models you've got 1 of my favorites, it's my second fav' the first spot for me are what we call here in Aus' the "Tank model" what you guys call the '59 '60's, love the flat head, look forward to seeing a "will it run" episode??
Nice....on the topic of AM radio....it's a big hulking piece of chassis metal....back in those days....capacitor tuning, crystal diode (demodulation) detection and then your standard 6 to 10 transistor amplification...out to one speaker, maybe two. I must say...we've come a long way baby. Well, at least the radio is original...i'm willing to bet that radio still works or can be easily fixed...electronics back then were like bulldozers, big and stout. Clean the corrosion off the tuning capacitor and you're good to go.
cold should not stop cold war motors , come on we wanna hear that flathead purr like that cat that tried to steal the show lol , that car actually looks very solid , unless looks are deceiving on this ford , I think you found a really good car to fix up a bit for sure !
+towrecker Hey, thanks for checking it out; I'll probably get this one going in the spring, after the Frazer is done and a few other little projects! Cheers from me and Stella!
It always amazes me how good the chrome seems to be on a lot of old American cars. It can't be the same plated rubbish we have and had on UK models. It used to peel and disintegrate from the inside out.
A little CWM rewind to go with my Sunday morning coffee. This fine old Ford probably belonged to a pipefitter from the local Union Hall. Imagine a Tom Waits kind of character behind the wheel. Pack of Lucky Strikes in his pocket, breathe wreaking of cheap beer and whiskey. Driving home to his old lady, serving up a Friday night fish fry. These where truly working men's cars. No such thing exists today.
What you have is a 100 % car per this grading system: Beginning at zero, plus 25% for having all the trim except the grille bullet; minus 25 points for a torn-up interior; plus 25% for retaining the radio; plus10% per Allstate classic tire; plus 20%for a solid body; plus 10% for the engine rebuild and plus 5% for having the keys and the neat boot key holder. With tender loving care it would be a fine cruising machine. Assuming you shot the video in the fall of 2015, I am curious about its status in winter 2018, some 2+ years later. I realize you are a busy man, but have you started it yet? Thanks for the nostalgic tour of this beauty.
I should have checked out parts 2 and 3 before asking my question. She's a fine running machine after your valve repair on #4 (?) cylinder. Congrats on making her run again.
I love the patina too. Just get the engine running & all the mechanicals working, and install a new interior & a clear coat and take her to the car shows
I love the cat at the end he came to get some loving from you could hear it purring such a cute cat

Bought a 53 green Ford 2 door in 1966 for $60 from an old lady up the street. My first car. Really enjoy your videos.
Thanks
+Lorne F Hey, thanks for checking them out; cheers from me and my girl Stella!
Love that car! Add in the Calico and the only thing better would be to hear the car purr, too.
Thanks for the note! I am working on the Ford as we speak... should be running soon! Cheers.
My buddies had these and we put many miles cruzin' around our hometown, Owensboro, KY. Wish I had a $ bill for every mile I rode in one!! Good ol' cars.
Excellent find. The chrome is worth LOTS.
I had a 52 just like this one. A little rot in drivers side floor, surface rust elsewhere. Flathead and three on the tree. Fixed the rust and painted it silver metallic. Great car!

+Jonah Halbert Do it! These old girls are pretty easy to get going again...

@@coldwarmotors Stay single buddy, dog's plenty of company.
These were such great looking cars. My Dad had a convertible one back in the day. This really deserves a restoration!

Nice Car! This one deserves the same attention you gave to that Frazer, and maybe more!

Do you fix up any of the car you buy?
The 56 Plymouth looks nice as well mate. The Australian Chrysler Royal of 57 to 62 was loosely base on the 56 but on a 53 Plymouth body.
+Bob Coxon Hey, thanks; I'll put a video of it up once the weather warms up. Cheers from me and Stel!
It always amazes me how good the chrome seems to be on a lot of old American cars. It can't be the same plated rubbish we have and had on UK models. It used to peel and disintegrate from the inside out.

say, do you sell any of your cars after getting them running?
looks real solid
That 53 looks like you could make it a driver pretty easily. I'm assuming it has a decent floor.
Had one in High school, Worse car I ever owned but it just might have been me. Duel water pumps are the motor mounts .Good luck
