Saved From The Crusher: 1947 Chrysler Royal!

  • Опубліковано 28 тра 2016
  • Hey! I was out shopping again at a local salvage yard that is closing down, and i bought this old Chrysler Royal so it wouldn't get melted down and turned into a Daewoo Lanos or some such rubbish.
These Chryslers were manufactured unchanged from 1946 to the beginning of the 1949 model year, and I've always liked the big grinning face they have. They were a nicely put-together car featuring a 251 c.i. flathead 6 cylinder engine, and this car has the "Fluid-Drive", which is basically a fluid coupling in front of a regular clutch and 3-speed standard transmission.
I got the engine to turn over by hand, so there's a chance it can be made to run, but the fluid-drive transmission means that I won't be able to pull-start the car like I do with some of these units that have been parked for 40-50 years. Nevertheless, I think it might be persuaded to run with a "little" tinkering...
Well, I hope you guys enjoy a short look around at this sweet old Chrysler; anyone who has been following this channel for any amount of time knows I am prone to acquiring this type of thing when left unattended for very long. I think that these cars represent a time in history that is gone and not coming back anytime soon, and I hate seeing them cubed for a couple hundred bucks worth of scrap to be made into something immeasurably inferior to what it is right now, even in its somewhat weathered state.
As usual, I would like to sincerely thank everyone who subscribed to my little channel here, and for all of your "likes" and comments. I read every one, and genuinely appreciate that anyone would take the time to tell us that they like this kind of thing. Of course, I couldn't do this without the help of any number of generous friends who help out finding, moving, tidying, and tinkering on these hopeless cases. Thank you guys.
Of course, none of it means anything if Stella isn't having fun...
Cheers to everyone from me, the other CWMC Agents, and of course my girl Stella...

Neat find. My Grandmother had one, I don't remember the year as I was very young but it was 2 tone. Tan on the bottom and brown on top and it came with a dealer installed rack on the roof with a fitted canvas. The ultimate family truckster. She sold it and got my favorite car a 56 Chevy 4dr Belair with a 6 cyl, powerglide AND it came with power windows and power brakes. I rode in it from about age 4 up until 13 when my Dad sold it for $500.00 out from under me. I wanted to restore it and drive it when I got my license. He said he didn't want it hanging around. All it needed was over the headlights and dog legs like they do other than that it was a sweet well taken care of car. The guy that bought it trashed it then tried to sell it. I could have bought it but at the time it made me sick. Looking back I should have anyway as later I became owner of two body shops. Today at 58 I still would have that car had I bought it back. It was so cool riding in it as a kid. As for the Chrysler, I'm sure I rode in it but I was probably about 2 yrs old.The 56 was the one that did it for me. I always admired the dashboard since for a while I couldn't see over it. I love the Chrysler you picked up and would also like to see it run.Stell seems to like it as she hopped right in. In some of the other vids she walks away not interested. I look forward to each video. They are fun, entertaining, and learning how to fix stuff for dirt money is the added bonus. Keep um rolling!

So glad there are guys like you around that rescue old treasures of motoring. When the Chinese wanted mega amounts of steel ten years ago, they were paying megabucks to us aussies. The result was devastating as it has left our rural areas stripped of most of the old clssics and historic old machinery.
Scrap guys didnt care much what it was, it went into the bin and got crushed. Sad time mate...

Great video! Those old Chryslers had so much class, and they are built like tanks. I embarked on a similar labor of love 19 years ago with my '49 Chevy. I learned a lot and kept it fun despite inevitable setbacks. I wish you all the best!

My favorite early post war Mopar! (the 1955-56 Chryslers and Dodges are my all time Mopar favorites)
The old girl looks like it has a fairly cherry body which eliminates a big restoration headache. Most mechanical parts are available. Car looks like it was an excellent running car when parked.

Great save. That car was stunning and elegant when she was brand new, and is still beautiful. I have said it before, those old Chryslers are a unique brand of their own. I have seen a Desoto with similar suicide doors parked in the woods here in Michigan that has kept my interest for many years. Unfortunately the owner is not a very friendly person so saving that car is probably out of the question. Again, Thanks for saving another automotive gem! -Nick.

WOW! I found this video in my selection of what to watch and I thought it must be an extra from the boys as they've been doing the last few weeks but No! It's from WAAAYYY back in 2016! How cool is this! Is that the same forklift that Scott now owns and uses in his yard?? Then there's the regal Stella! Oh wow how awesome is this! Scott even looks like a younger guy even though it's not even 10 years yet. Very cool to see! Would it be at all possible that that door handle can go on up side down? Or is on up side down? LOL. I'm sure Scott has it on as right as it can be just a thought. As I watch there's just more and more. Those Laundry bags use to be sold in Laudry mats and that 9 lives battery is a memory shaker!

Very nice. My grandpa bought a 1948 Dodge 2dr Fluid Drive brand new it looks just like your Royal. My dad used the car to go to work when he was living with his parents. Dad got married and moved out and eventually my grandpa sold the car to my uncle, who used it for quite a few years before selling it to my brother who sold it to me. We had the car until 1974 when the New Jersey Turnpike had our farm condemned for an extension on the turnpike that never was built. We had a bunch of vehicles on our farm that we had to get rid of before we moved. The Dodge went to the scrap yard, it was in pretty good shape and hopefully someone did what you did and saved it. When you were pulling the car from the junkyard one of your agents was catching a ride on the rear bumper. We would ride the bumper of our 48 out in the fields and there was a curve that had lots of sand so much that you could get the car to go sideways through the turn. We would fly through there and try to dislodge whoever was riding on the bumper which was sometimes 2 or 3 guys. Had lots of fun with that car and it helped me to learn how to drive a stick as the fluid drive was very forgiving. Thanks for saving some history and I look forward to the progress.

How that car, having lived in Canada all its life, and being parked in a field for at least the last 40-something years, isn't completely rusted away, is just beyond me. Sure a couple of holes in the bottom, but the rest of it just has a nice patina and is in great shape. I don't know how y'all find this stuff, but I'm very happy you do!

Hey, thanks for the note. Glad you liked the Chrysler like I do! It's pretty rough, but mostly there, so I grabbed it. There are still lots of postwar cars around here, but the crusher is getting a lot of them as cities grow over the farmyards and younger generations "clean up" grandpa's place... I get a few cars from people just wanting their parents' places tidied up so they can sell.

    Stella knows the deal.
Those rear doors are fender smashers. If they open at speed they go right into the fender. I'm sort of jealous...nearly every one you get bars over, and the one car I got won't, lol.

The first time I ever saw turn signals in action was on a late '40's Dodge. Thought it was pretty neat, I was about six years old at the time.

You have so many cars, I love most of them. I really would like to have gotten my hands on that 1967 MAC you had. I have a lust for that era of MAC cars. I wish that your shop truck Ford F-250 had the style side body. I would have to steal it. It was my first car.

"Fluid Drive" back then was a transmission, that looked like a 3 on the tree, but had BOTH a clutch and torque converter, which was filled with 10 weight motor oil. The driver stepped on the clutch, dropped the lever where 3rd normally was, let out the clutch, and it was like a fully automatic being dropped from neutral to drive. The driver accelerated to about 30, took his foot off the gas, and heard a click from the tranny, and he was in final drive gear. Stopped for a stop sign, and the tranny automatically down shifted. Looking for a decent 1950 Chrysler convertible.

Very cool! It's a hard decision who is cuter, your dog or the cat. I can't believe Stel is that laid back, she must have one wonderful personality. Chrysler is a good pick. Wonder what the back seat looks like under that J C Whitney cover. Maybe you will do a special reveal, who knows...what wonders lurk there.

Hey, thanks for the note. Yes, Stel is a lovely dog... she's the best thing about this place, even if she is pretty bossy and used to getting her way 100% of the time...
