- Chris the Alfa Nut starts work on his classic 1986 Alfa Romeo 75 2.5 V6 Busso-engined Green Cloverleaf! The car was locked away in a garage for several years since it's partial restoration in 2020 and was leaking fuel from it's badly rusted fuel tank. Chris and his pal Gary from "Totally Alfa" get together to fit a brand new "old stock" tank and try to get the old girl started up. But wait, things don't quite go to plan!

Hi Simon, cheers for watching! Yes , this motor was fully stripped & rebuilt back in 2020 and had all new seals and gaskets, including bottom cylinder seals and crank bearings. Runs great but some of the sensors are obviously toast!
Nice to see real workshop in process, Chris. Be patient: a city is not conquered in a day!

Interesting video. Good to see one where things don't go quite as smoothly as perhaps anticipated. My dad had an Alfetta saloon then the Alfetta GTV after, in the mid to late 70's. Loved both of those cars, especially the berlina....
Hi Alex (or is it Murray?) thanks for watching and commenting mate. It certainly wasn't what I'd call "smooth" either! ;0) The Alfetta saloon is a pretty rare beast these days, I guess because it wasn't as pretty as the GTV, so probably wasn't cherished as much? I'm really looking forward to finally driving my 75.
Love the format. Glad to see the engine turns over at least. That was one fiddly fuel tank change but well done on getting it done. Let's hope the fuel leak isn't serious
Hi Joseph, thanks for watching mate - yes it was fiddly but only because we were improvising! 😉 I have found the fuel leak already - it’s just a perished pipe further along the system.

Great format and fun to be following the restoration. I sat in the back of a Twin Spark a lot as a child and loved it. Can't wait to see the first drive once the fuel tank and oil pressure are sorted. Best of luck with the next steps!
Thanks for watching Romain, glad you are enjoying it! I think the remaining fuel leaks will be easy to fix but the broken sensors are very difficult to reach at the back of the engine. 🥴🫣
I got myself a black 1987 Alfa 75 v6 in the year 2000, now it has not moved in 20 years. Im thinking of restoring it next year so this is helpfull Thanks! 🥰
Oh no, what a shame - I hope it was garaged for that 20 years? Your petrol tank will be as rusty as mine was! They are increasing in value now - where are you based?
@@TheAlfaNut It was rust free in 2000 and its stored in a barn so still no rust!!😃Car was imported in 1997 from Egypt (claimed)haha and its a Milano but i changed the engine to a 3.0 the 2.5 was full of sand and never had a oil change, a very strange story. Yeah feultank and i think allot more needs to be worked on. Next year i have the funds and want it te be 100% like new because like you say they increased in value And it was my daily driver from when i was 20-23 years young so to me its priceless😍 Im from The Netherlands
That sounds like a good plan! I think the Netherlands has a few good classic Alfa parts suppliers?
@@TheAlfaNut No not realy, some parts wil be a nightmare but some parts are still around on alfa-clubs and forums and so on. If you google alfa parts then there is also some stuff but its getting harder each day..

Shall I tell you a story????
While I owned the 2.5, I also I repaired a crash damaged Twin spark.
"We" couldn't get the Twin spark to "perform", so
The 2.0 T-Spark engine was removed (later sold for a 105 GTV owner)
The 2.5 was removed and fitted to the T-Spark repaired car (complicated wiring and propshaft jiggery pokery)
Much later.... I had a 1.8 Alfetta Gt engine in the shed, and I put that in to the 2.5 car (complete with twin carbs) and I traded it in at DC Cooks against a new Punto.
Hi Paul, sounds like a game of “mix ‘n match!” 😂 my 75 started life as a 2.5 QV but has had some TS Veloce parts fitted, including the interior sadly as the previous owner didn’t want to retrim the Recaros! 🙄
Oh my - I am having flashbacks to the day I changed my 1985 Spider's tank and main pump (yep, 2 pumps, as well) and upon startup had a shower of fuel beneath the car as all the old fuel lines gave up with the new amount of fuel pressure they had to deal with. Every soft line had to be changed. But to be honest, I feel so much more safe now that's done!

@@TheAlfaNut I do have the spider and daily drive it in the fall, winter and spring. I'm in Texas, so the summer is definitely out, but otherwise, it is great fun once the sun isn't trying to kill us here. Soft lines were reasonably easy in the Spider (an afternoon's work) but I am not sure of how they all route in the 75. I have almost owned a 75 on a couple of occasions, but chose to pass both times since here in the US they tend to be very poorly maintained, save for the REALLY good ones and those don't change hands often.
Ah Texas - I was expecting you to say Sweden, Denmark or Norway because of your name! Yes it gets pretty hot in Texas for a Northern European derived body! 😉 My Mums family were From Southern Italy but my Dad’s side were Scottish Highlands, originally from Norway we believe, so I like the sun but burn easily! 🥴. I guess you are the opposite of me and drive a tin top with aircon in the Summer then? Do you know Ofer Kedem of “Alfa Romeo - The People” on Facebook? He is in Austin I believe.
You could use PORS fuel tank restorer that does a good job on old rusty tanks ! GH Aus.
Hi GH! Funny you should mention that - I already have some! ;0) I'm going to repair the old tank and sell it to recoup some of the horrendous cost of the new one. Supply and demand though I guess?

What shame with the leaking tank but I had the same on my spider some years ago. Finally it was a bad sealing.
Metal tanks should always be filled 100% if the car stands over long time. It avoids corrosion.

@TheAlfaNut I am! I think 8ve had 13 or 13 alfas! Rose tinted memory says that my favourites were 164s, alfettas, and I did have a very special 1985 sprint green cloverleave ! It was tuned and had koni shocks... boy did that car go!! ... lights were rubbish though!
Some nice motors in your history there Dermot - I recently sold a green cloverleaf Sprint that was a bit too rusty for me to tackle! I am hoping to review a 164 QV sometime soon. 😎🍀👍🏻

Thanks Stanislas - it is just old, hardened pipes which are leaking we think. The engine needs some sensors replaced too!

@@TheAlfaNut 155 has to be the right colour. F the builds I'd want to do (on either) I wouldn't want to ruin a good one ;)
Actually it was std Bosch practice with tank pre-pump in the 80’s. It wasn’t until much later you started seeing single-pump (in tank) systems.
Keep it up! Nothing’s impossible with old italians! (Like it is with old french 😂)

That is a good thing! I only found out about your channel yesterday because of my brother. He has a 75 v6 build in 1987 planned to restore in the future and pointed uit your channel to me. I am looking forward to future video's! And yes I have 2 Alfa 33,s. A 1992 1.7 16v qv and a 89 1.7 8v qv.

Actually most cars have pre-pump in the tank.

Don't forget to replace the cambelt. If it's been sitting for years it's probably the best thing to do.
Luckily the engine was completely stripped and rebuilt in 2020, including cylinder seals, crank bearings and all seals, so is very healthy - I need to replace some sensors and clean connectors I think 😉👍🏻

Great job i have a alfa 75 3.0 v6 my fuel tank is behind the back seat in the boot is yours an engine swap, because the fuel tank under the floor was only for the 2.0 twin spark or half u fot the 2.5 one

Engine does sound good. But oil pressure light and gauge sensors are in the back of the head and in between the Vee towards the firewall. Both sensors known to fail. Best is to test with a mechanical gauge first.

@@TheAlfaNut yes my 75 has a GTA engine and my 156 V6 also has a GTA engine but with the 2.5 6-speed box. The easiest way to take off the pressure sender is to heat up a 14mm (if I recall correctly) spanner and bend it. I have a custom tool for it. Your garage mate Totally Alfa should Totally make one for you :) cheers
Aha - the GTA engine and the 2.5 box gives better ratios for acceleration I believe?
Great video thanks Chris. The parts for old Alfas are now getting so difficult to get hold of, and so quite expensive now. I know of a couple of places in Italy that stock parts for Lancia, Maserati, Ferrari, Lamborghini, but not for Alfa Romeos. Do you know of any good sources in Italy that you use? Yep, I think it was probably a 1980’s UK dealer supplied sunroof - every dealer seemed to be offering to cut a hole in your brand new car at the time! 😂

Hi mate - you got it in one! It seems like a pretty stupid arrangement to me but then, many Alfa engineering solutions don't make sense to me! Did you have problems with yours then? Any tips?
2 rusty tanks and still dodgy seal , very frustrating
Argh! At least my problem now seems to be just replacing the remaining rubber pipes - hopefully not too tricky! 🤞🏻
