With the monorails from New Vegas, I can't help but think of the early versions of the Disneyland Monorail were their inspiration, at least in looks. The original Mark 1 Monorails at Disneyland did have a very 1950s style look to them, and they did open as part of the Tommorowland upgrade in 1959.
I for some reason love upside-down monorails. Yes they're cool but it just came out of nowhere for me, it's usually in the back of my mind (with some other ideas) and if I let it wander for to long it will eventually come back to them
Yeah, that stretch of line puzzles me. I suppose I just assume that there was some sort of assist system in place; a jet engine maybe, knowing how mad the FO universe is. Or some other mechanism that has been destroyed that stood nearby, that used coils or something magnetic or directed energy to provide forward motion assist / downhill motion braking. Maybe it was a mechanical chain pulley that hooked on and back off again at the top, like an overhead version of the drives you see on rollercoasters. I mean, you can put a nuclear reactor on a train, but friction is friction - ain’t no smooth-wheeled rail vehicle getting up that track without some sort of assistance, especially if it’s… y’know, towing a nuclear reactor. So - yeah. Fair point, can’t argue with you there!
@@Rad_King I know FONV has some trains. I was player in an FONV pen and paper rpg a friend made and did the research once. Played a travelling train trader. Just follow the railway system from the powder gang prison and you'll land somewhere in the south east where you can find at least one. Iirc the powder gang should clear the railway, so obviously the NCR wanted to use it. The railway system was surprisingly intact. I think there were also some train things in the divide, but not sure there. And FO4 also had at least some train waggons pretty much at the start, iirc.
I’m actually surprised that there isn’t more emphasis on railways in the games. For one they are extremely useful, providing transportation for all kinds of material and people. With the wacky way the fallout universe works I’m sure they could be turned into a kind of rolling fortress. Plus railways and trains are an integral part of American culture, making it all the more surprising that there isn’t a bit more of a focus on them in some fashion.
Just a couple tips from a train fanatic: for metro systems, "engine car" or "motor car" is correct. On the surface, they are locomotives. There is actually an F unit locomotive in New Vegas, near the pier on lake mead where you float the B-29 up for the boomers. Id guess the steam locomotive-looking one from 4 is a nuclear powered locomotive. There is no tender behind the locomotive for fuel (coal or oil) or water, so my guess is that its still steam, but steam turning turbines for electric motors. Similar in concept to modern diesel electric locomotives. That would explain the height and number of needed pilot axles.
Me finding your channel: "i mean, who really cares about the "cars of fallout" when 97% of them are destroyed?" Me after watching my first radking video: "OH FUCK YEA, HE'S GOT ONE ABOUT THE TRAINS OF FALLOUT? LET'S GOOOOOOO!"
Melbourne has an all city regional rail network, still has everything built into 2 or 3 rail cars in the set that give it horsepower. Also we have a short underground metro set of tunnels that loop around the centre of the city. In the newer xtraps trains the centre car in a 3 car set has the electric engines, on the underside. You basically can't tell from the inside aside from the sound of the VFD driven electric motors.
To be honest, the engine from fallout 4 reminds me of another Pennsylvania Railroad engine rather than the T1, the S2 Steam turbine Locomotive, although it doesn't have the monolithic tall shape, I think it would share some Mechanical features with the fallout 4 engine, specifically a steam turbine that's used as the main form of locomotion (instead of the traditional steam pistons used in other steam engines). It may not be the exact design basis but it's one of the closest irl trains concept wise I think. Also the DC metro could still not exactly have an engine, that front car could just be a cab car with controls and electric motors are still spread around the train, like on some bullet trains.
i will say the FO4 one reminds me of the Union Pacific Big Boy but well made much more fallout wise with alot of the steam components from the drive wheels taken off and with a really 40s 50s bubbly design to it

I’m rather surprised there aren’t as many electric driven locomotives. Nuclear power creating electricity for overhead catenary’s, (structures above the tracks that hang conductive wire above the line) and locomotives with pantograph’s (special pieces of equipment on electric locomotives that look like twisted wire that pick of power from the wires hung by the catenary’s) would have seemed almost ideal. Electric power for locomotives is really good too, for both very heavy freight slugging and high speed passenger service. Electric locomotives designed for freight have enough power to rip your house off its foundation and tow it down the track for miles, and the higher speed passenger trains can click in at hundreds of miles per hour if the track is adequate and the right of way is safe. When playing FO4 I always would go to the freight depots somewhat near sanctuary and spot the big locomotive with the odd pilots and wheel configuration that, and wondered what powered it. Great video, a bit of railroad grammar could be fixed but that’s all it got in the way of problems! Keep it up!
A few things from a huge railfan. 1, the DC stock appears to be Budd company stock due to the signature side coregation (spell wont work) and the DC power cars seem to be generally inspired by the general trend of steam locomotives from the 1930s and 40s, specifically "bullet nose" streamlining. If I had to pick one, maybe the 20th century limited, but thats just bc both were gray. The fallout new vegas diesels (to me) seem like E8s, but I could be wrong. For any monorails, or the presidential subway, I simply have no clue. I don't really look into them as I'm more of a standard diesel and interurban enjoyer. Also thanks for shouting out the black beetle. One of my favorite classes, the Budd RDC.
EMD F-units are actually diesel-electric locomotives. The diesel engines don't run the train wheels they actually power an electric generator which produces the electricity needed to power both the traction motors which are are geared to the drivers

I think the DC Metro also uses Cab Cars, a Cab Car uses the Idea of Multiple Unit Train Control to control the Locomotive of a Passenger train from the Other end of the Train, i can only infer this from ingame Ads about the Metro showcasing a Passenger car with Windows on the ends which if you observe a Car doesnt have windows on the Ends.
Am I the only one who heard the locomotive blowing the whistle? The Starlight Drive In was under attack and I had to defend it.
