How to register a Drone in the UAE || For a Hobbyist Permit

- Welcome back to the channel and episode 10 where I'm going to show you the procedure I did to apply for a Hobbyist Drone permit here in the UAE.
Please note that this video covers our own experience and how we registered our drone here as a UAE resident and only for a hobbyist permit.
My friend, Danilo, allowed me to document the procedure while he was taking his exam to get a drone certification from SANAD Academy which is needed to apply for a hobbyist drone license from the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority.
There are two types of Government departments here where you need to register your drone. The GCAA and DCAA.
First department is the GCAA (General Civil Aviation Authority) which is where you need to get the permit if you are planning to fly your drone on the 6 other emirates of the UAE specifically the emirates of Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaima, Fujairah, Sharjah, Um al Quwain and Ajman.
The second department is the DCAA ( Dubai Civil Aviation Authority) which is specifically in the emirate of Dubai. This is where you need a RPAS certification first from a Drone school which you needed to submit to their website along with the other requirements to get a permit.
I strongly recommend to register your drone on both government departments to avoid any issues when flying your drone here inside the UAE. It is better to have them both in my opinion just in case the authorities ask for it.
I also suggest to check SANAD academy for all other inquiries about drone registration and if you want to apply for a more advanced permit like commercial and professional drone permits.
An important reminder to all drone owners to please adhere and always follow the rules and regulations when flying your drone here in the UAE And any part of the world. Be responsible and always do a pre-flight safety check of your drone, the surroundings and area you want to fly. Use the My Drone hub app (link below) to check if the area is a fly zone or no fly zone.

fobkingdingaling Hi Maam, DCAA website has an option for a tourist permit for drones in their website. Kindly select that and follow the procedures and apply before you come here to Dubai. It’s a temporary permit they give to Tourists who wants to bring and use their drone here. Thanks

Guys, just got a confirmation from GCAA, that if you are buying mavic mini you do not need to register with GCAA since it is less than 250 gms, you just need to download the UAE fly zone map and just know where to fly.

It’s very strict here in the UAE on Drones is and the if you happened to get questioned while flying your drone the first thing the authorities will ask you is your certificate of registration. I have many friends who owns a mavic mini and to be safe they registered all their units. Better to be safe than regret not having one when the time comes..And it’s FREE to register..Just saying 😁👍
ClickBoi Levs - My fiancé purchased the DJI Movic Mini for me. We won’t fly it in Dubai ever; only take it on vacations... Do we still need to register it in Dubai? We don’t want any issues when we return from vacation...

Eugene Hart If you will be using Dubai Airport then YES, you need to register your Mini on DCAA, that will be the permit they will ask you to show them upon entry here IN DUBAI AIRPORT if they happen to know you carrying a drone. If you don’t have DCAA then your drone will be confiscated until you register it and will be a big hassle to get it back due to lots of procedures..
If you will be using Any other emirates airport, then GCAA will suffice.

Please Note this update that DCAA does not issue ID’s anymore..You can just log in on your DCAA account then you can download and print your hobbyist certificate from there..I’ve just recently renewed mine that’s why I came to know.

Felix Brain Hi there, Yes you can finish it in a day, try to practice and feel your drone indoors first with prop guards for safety if you can before you go for the training. If you want you can enroll the full course if you can afford it and have time. When I was a newbie I only took the same day exam and got my certificate in few hours, its pretty easy honestly. Hi there, as I mentioned, Dubai has a separate Department which is the DCAA and has its own set of rules and regulations.
Even though it may seem similar to GCAA, the DCAA is specifically the one to follow if you are to fly your RPAS here in DUBAI..
All other 6 emirates (RAK, Fujairah, Sharjah, Um al Quwain, Ajman and Abu Dhabi) all follow the GCAA RPAS rule.

What does the pink yellow and red mean on the map
basically means no fly zones at all specially the Pink and Red ones, yellow needs a special permit from DCAA which is impossible to get as well if your not a commercial pilot

Captain.Eiram Xplore hi there, we normally fly outside dubai on other emirates and mostly desert areas away from the busy city areas, drone hub will show u these areas and those without color restrictions on the map shown on the app..

For the Drone certificate from SANAD you only need to get once and you can use it for any drone you register to DCAA and GCAA.

And one last thing, i downloaded the GCAA app but almost the entire uae map is shown as restricted area ‘need gcaa approval’ so i wanted to ask can i fly it over my home , corniche , sea , mountains in Rak, Al ain or Fujairah? I know i can’t fly over airports , govt buildings etc , can you please specifically tell in what areas of Sharjah & Dubai i can fly drone?
Follow the map and u will see some spots that are allowed, always ask permission first to whoever or if theres anyone in charge of the area before flying even if its flyzone. One thing i suggest to visit is the Maleiha area in Sharjah. Thats a flyzone and safely away from city.

There used to be an option on DCAA website for tourist but since all registration and drone flying are still banned I believe there is no other choice.

Hi there, short answer is “No”as you will be in big trouble if you get caught, so i do suggest that you dont.
If ever you still decided to risk it then fly far away from the city, and mostly empty desert areas.
There is a tourist permit on the DCAA website so try checking that out as I don’t have any info about that.

UAE has now ban flying drones. Recently airport customs in Dubai hold my drone at airport while entering UAE after my vacation in Georgia. I am living in Dubai since 2020 and my drone is almost 3 years old and I never flew it in UAE but they still hold it and asked me get letter from MOIAT. MOIAT asked me to fill online form and make payment of 200 AED and was told that UAE has banned drones but you can keep it once you have the letter of product status from MOIAT. ****BEWARE

AA English Vlogs hi there, dont be confused, in DCAA its mandatory to register it because it has a GPS and Camera on it so register it even its below 250gms.
In GCAA pls try to register it if they will accept. I am not sure if they accept registration for mavic mini but its worth checking since its just a free registration. Please update me once you do.

Saad Qureshi no they don’t put trackers on our drones here..but they can still track your drones if you fly it recklessly and do not follow rules and regulations.

Hi there, i had a friend who recently came back to dubai with Mini 2 and they did asked him for the dcaa permit, there’s a tourist option on the website, you can check that out if youre not a resident here. Anyone bringing a drone to Dubai should have that permit. You can take risk and maybe theyll not even ask you but once they do, they will confiscate your drone till you exit the country. Thanks

I mentioned clearly that GCAA is an easy free registration that doesn’t need certification and is applicable on the 6 emirates of UAE Abu Dhabi ,Ras Al Khaima,Sharjah, FUjairah ,UM Al Quain And AJman..
DCAA registration REQUIRES certification thats why I recommend SANAD based on my experience. DCAA REGISTRATION IS FOR DUBAI ONLY just to make it clear.

Hi there, yes it is not mentioned so to be safe try emailing them to double check. In the US it is 13 years old. For more than 25kilo drones in the UAE it is 21years old. Try to register it, i have friends who still register their Mini drones as it is better to have a certificate pr permit rather than not having one when asked here by the authorities, and its free to register anyways

klein and peach adventure Hi Po, wala pong expiry ang GCAA certificate kya no need napo, sa DCAA naman po need nyo po kung gagamit kayo ng Dubai Airport sa mga flight ninyo palabas at papasok sa UAE, yun po kasi hahanapin nila pag matanong kayo ng authorities.

Is the Sanad academy certification only valid for 1 year? And how long is the DCAA registration valid for ?
Thanks for asking, I myself will renew my DCAA permit soon. DCAA permit is only valid for 1yr then you need to renew. SANAD will give you new stickers for your drone after a year to check if your drone is still in good working condition. The certificate has no validity and you can use it again to renew your DCAA by following the same process I mentioned in the video. Thanks

Most of my friends who owned the mini 2 registered their drones to the DCAA for airport entry and exit only, but Definitely try to register it on the GCAA coz its free.

LS7 Hi there, remember as I mentioned on the video there are 2 Government departments to register your drone, GCAA and DCAA..
For all emirates except Dubai, its free to register your mavic mini on GCAA site (link on the description below).
For Dubai you need to check with SANAD academy (link below) about the price, I spent around 400+AED to get me certified and then another 120aed for the hobbyist permit in DCAA (link description below). Hope that helps 👍

Toy drones below 250gms does not need to be registered with the exemption of drones with high resolution camera with gps like the mavic mini 1 and 2.

Amro Sayed they don’t require you to register the Mini on the GCAA, BUT IN DCAA you need to register it because it has a camera and gps, I suggest you to register on both for you to avoid any hassle if you will be questioned by authorities
Brother what so ever apart from specs every drone to b intended to fly should get the permit please confirm or any specs like camera range weight like us rules any deviations for drones are available
Robert Samuel Hi, any drones 250g and above should be registered, DCAA in Dubai specifically needs all drone with GPS and Camera registered regardless of any weight. However for the rest of the Emirates, GCAA registration only applies to 250gms and above drones with Camera and GPS given that you use it legally and follow rules and regulations on flyzone areas.

Robert Samuel in short, DCAA IN DUBAI requires you to register even the Mavic Mini.
For GCAA FOR ALL OTHER EMIRATES, they don’t require you to register anymore coz of the weight.

Hi Royce, Unfortunately No, and if you try to bring it with you it might get confiscated in the Dubai airport once you arrive and if they detected that you’re bringing it with you. If you’re lucky to pass thru though its very strict here in Dubai so good luck on not getting caught coz if you do its not gonna be a pleasant experience. 👍

hey levs, could you tell me some of the most important rules for flying drones as hobbiyist as per GCAA ? :D
ALWAYS Be responsible, not all flyzones are ok to fly in the UAE, so always check the area first or ask permission if necessary before you fly or risk getting in to trouble. Mind what you are filming or taking photo, always fly your drone at line pf sight and DO NOT FLY at NIGHT…👍

It does not mean that the area is flyzone that you can just fly there as you wish, sometimes the flyzone area is privately owned by someone so you have to ask permission first from the owner of the area if possible. And No dont risk flying on top of buildings as it is not allowed and your drone should always be on your line of site, I am not from the government so take my word as a precaution only, like I said YOU WILL BE THE ONE responsible if you get into trouble here so fly safely and RESPONSIBLY. julien _Music Hi there, theres a tourist drone permit in the DCAA website. I am not familiar with tourist procedure so better to check it out (link description below). If you happen to bring your drone without a DCAA permit and got detected by authorities in the airport, your drone will be confiscated and can be collected only when you depart Dubai. Thanks

Hi Sir, pwede po paregister sa GCAA pero aa of this moment naka Ban parin ang drone flying for hobbyist sa buong UAE so huhulihin kapa rin kahit nakaregister drone mo if ever. Pag inuwi mo drone mo pwede naman ibalik din dto basta nakaregister both sa DCAA if Dubai airport ka papasok at GCAA if other emirates ka papasok

Clar Jan Sa GCAA walang option for tourists pero sa DCAA site meron pong png tourist permit, not familiar with the process pero meron sila application for that. Mahigpit sila dto sa drone sir so if mag tour lang I suggest wag mona irisk dalhin kasi hindi din pwede paliparin sa mga famous places dto (mostly no fly zones). Thanks
