This film was released in 1987 at the height of the AIDS crisis and the whole scare surrounding it, which is why Bond is much less of a lothario in this film and only beds one woman. I actually think it works to the film's advantage, since it makes Bond and Kara's relationship feel more genuine and meaningful compared to most of his other one-off flings, which is definitely one of the film's best attributes.
Aside from that, this is a highly underrated Bond film, it's get fantastic action and stunts, a surprisingly complex and interesting plot, one hell of a killer soundtrack (the last in the series to be done by the late great John Barry), and of course Timothy Dalton as Bond. He's honestly a fantastic Bond, and truly ahead of his time; audiences weren't ready to accept his dark and less jokey take on the character at the time, but after Daniel Craig did something similar with his films to great success, Dalton's been reappraised and rightfully seen for the excellent 007 that he is

I for one always did rate this one very highly, but then I've always had a thing for 'darker' takes in movies and TV shows also. The Gibraltar opening was truly spectacular at the time, and the car chase with the Aston Martin was also a grand experience.
Some other aspects of the movie haven't aged as gracefully perhaps, like the 'noble freedom fighters' in Afghanistan which turned into the Taliban in later years, and so on... :P Still, it's a really good Bond movie and Dalton deserved a few more goes at it in my view. Then again, his misfortune opened the way for Pierce Brosnan, which wasn't exactly a bad thing either.

Dalton has a long film career. Notable movie performances in addition to the Bond films include The Lion in Winter, Flash Gordon, The Rocketeer, and Hot Fuzz. There’s a 1983 BBC version of Jane Eyre with him that he’s wonderful in even if he’s probably too handsome for the part. He’s also an incredibly accomplished stage actor.

The 4th of 5 Bond films, directed by John Glen.
Timothy Dalton was my ideal Bond as an kid and I understood the Bond character better.
Dalton was first approached to play Bond at age 25 for On Her Majesty Secret Service (after Connery, before Lazenby).
Although he was a fan of the novels, Dalton declined to the role because he knew he was too young to play the role.
When Roger Moore was done being Bond, Pierce Brosnan (pre-Goldeneye) was prepared for The Living Daylights.
The Remington Steele tv series (Brosnan was the lead) on NBC was going to end.
But NBC actually greenlit another season and Brosnan couldn't be in the movie.
Franchise producer Albert Broccoli remembered Dalton from when OHMSS was being developed and got him casted for TLD after finishing 2 other films.
Dalton does play Bond at 95% of who the character is.
The Aston Martin V8 was my first, favorite Bond car.
The theme song by A-Ha and the 2 songs by The Pretenders, so good.
If anything, Timothy Dalton had to walk as 007, so that Daniel Craig could run.

The scenes playing in Czechoslovakia were actually also shot in Vienna (my home city by the way😁), so for the respective scenes they had to swap all the Austrian license plates (except for Bond's) for Czechoslovakian ones.
There aren't any mountains between Bratislava and Vienna. However when they pass the border, they cross an alpine landscape.
Also the movie seems to take place in late summer or early autumn, but in the mysterious mountain scene we magically have got winter.
When the then mayor of Vienna - who seems to have been quite a "James Bond" fan - heard about the film project, he provided his support.
With a wink he even gave allowance, that if it was necessary for the movie to blow up some Viennese subway stations, the team was permitted to do so.😁

The rifle was a Walther WA-2000. it was designed as a police sniper rifle, not military. It's really heavy. The thing on his hand was a shooting glove. They are kind of like a soft cast so you can support the rifle with out grabbing it. Grabbing can change the point of aim. It's usually used for standing, off-hand rifle competitions.
Smiert Spionem was part of From Russia with Love, and mentioned in Octopussy.
Dalton was also in The Rocketeer from the 90's which was a really fun movie. He was also in Hot Fuzz, which is seriously worth a reaction. For the Greater good.
This one had a really deep plot for a bond movie. I thought this was great when it came out. His allies at the end were the Taliban, so that didn't age well. The jeep getting pulled out of the plane is real, except the part where you drive out. You'll see General Whittaker in a little bit in a different role.

If I remember correctly, The Living Daylights is just a short story that covers the adventure of smuggling Koskov out of Russia, basically the beginning of the movie. The rest of the film was written to extend it as it was a fairly short story. It’s also, I believe, the last of Ian Fleming’s actual work to become a Bond film. Everything after this up to Daniel Craig was written for the screen, based on elements of Fleming’s work.

Timothy Dalton has had a wild career. He has leading man looks, but frequently chose character roles. Among some really good Dalton roles:
    - Neville Sinclair in 'The Rocketeer' (1991) - He plays an Errol Flynn type of actor in 1940s Hollywood...to say more would spoil things.
    - Prince Barin of Arboria in 'Flash Gordon' (1980) - Based on the 1930s comic strip, with a song score by Queen, and a really amazing cast...this is cheesy, but amazing. One of my all-time favorites!
    - King Philip II of France in 'The Lion In Winter' (1969) -- This one is awesome with Katherine Hepburn in one of her Oscar-winning roles as Eleanor of Aquitaine, Peter O'Toole as King Henry II of England, and Anthony Hopkins as Prince Richard the Lionheart.
    - Group Captain Peter Townsend (ret) in the fifth season of 'The Crown'
    - Rhett Butler in 'Scarlett' a sequel to 'Gone With the Wind', was a made-for-TV miniseries with Joanne Whalley (Willow) as Scarlett O'Hara. It was decent, not outstanding...but he did a great Rhett Butler without being Clark Gable.
    - Donald Whitfield in '1923' (a prequel to 'Yellowstone' just renewed for a second season) He is the third James Bond actor to share screen time with Harrison Ford...Sean Connery in 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' and Daniel Craig in 'Cowboys and Aliens' are the other two.
There was only one Bond girl in this one, and it was partly due to pressure in Hollywood to lessen sexual content that was "promiscuous" due to the AIDS epidemic, which was still really big at the time. This meant that Bond had to be more reserved, and Dalton was on board with not doing tons of love scenes with different actresses.

Dalton almost played Bond in early 1980s as was picked to play Bond in For Your Eyes Only but Roger Moore decided to return as Bond as did with Octopussy and A View To A Kill in which Dalton was a back up in case Moore didn’t return and Pierce Brosnan was also considered then to.

@@scottknode898 Dalton also said he was uncomfortable in the role of Bond as written. He wanted to play it a little more light-heartedly and not quite so seriously as seen in his two outings. Dalton was correct. He acted like there was a rod stuck up his rear. When he played devilishly roguish bad guys, he lit up the screen with a gleam in his eyes.
Brosnan was the opposite because he thought his last Bond film was far too silly (it was) and demanded script approval on his next Bond film. The EON company rep called him late at night, awakening him from sleep, to fire him.
Daniel Craig also felt his Bond should have been a little bit of Moore and a little bit of Connery. He complained that his Bond had no fun and was a sour puss when these were supposed to be light adventure romps. Craig does have comedic chops, so it could have worked.

This movie came out in 1987, which was the 25th anniversary of the film series.
Dalton didn't really get a fair chance at the time, but he's gotten more respect for his turn as Bond over time.
If you go back to the novels, Dalton is the most literal Bond. He actually fits the physical description of Bond as described by Fleming of any of the actors. They originally wanted Pierce Brosnan at the time, but he was doing the tv show "Remington Steele" and the producers wouldn't let him out of his contract. So, he would have to wait to play the role.
Just as they do with each actor, they updated the series to fit the times. Since they went with a younger actor, it definitely made sense to recast Moneypenny.

He did this one & License to Kill (1989) too. The theme song in this - is by a-Ha. a-Ha is 1 of my favorite pop-bands from the 80's. They had some great songs like 'Take on Me' (great music video too) and 'The Sun always shines on T.V. Timothy Dalton also played 'Prince Baron' in the Flash Gordon movie (1980). That movie is a lot of fun and the band 'Queen' did the soundtrack for the movie. Their music in the movie was Awesome !!! Cheers Jen......

Jen's Bond reactions are the best things on UA-cam. And a tip of the hat to the editor who adds all the quirky fun. This is one of my favorite Bond movies. Maryam d'Abo lights up the screen. Timothy Dalton is very underrated, He's my 3rd favorite Bond behind Connery and Pierce Brosnan. He brought some needed seriousness to the role after Roger Moore's over-quipping and quasi-campiness, while keeping the sophistication and gadgetry that seemed to get lost in Daniel Craig's incantation. The title song was by the group A-ha, who also had a big hit with "Take On Me".

He was supposed to do Goldeneye, but because of delays of shooting the movie because of lawsuits, by the time the studio was ready to finally film it, Dalton’s contract had expired. Maybe in part because the first half is set and filmed in my favorite place Key West. Great scene at the Earnest Hemingway house, with the polydactyl (Hemingway) cats and Timothy Dalton giving a nod to Hemingway’s “A farewell to Arms”, when told to turn over his weapon. Also Robert Davi plays a great villain and just like everything else about this movie a very underrated theme song by Gladys Knight.

Dalton is criminally underappreciated as Bond! Both of his films are in my personal top 10 Bond films, with License to Kill being second only to Goldeneye! Fun fact: I've been reading the original Bond novels lately and Dalton's Bond is without a doubt the closest to book Bond!
Also, I highly recommend watching Never Say Never Again at some point! I know some view it as "non-canon", but, if you miss Connery's Bond, it is a pretty good send-off for him, better than Diamonds Are Forever!

John Barry did a lot of good music for many films, not just James Bond, but that's what he is most famous for I personally love his music for The Ipcress File (track - A Man Alone) and also for the TV series called Vendetta (Two tracks - Vendetta, and Danny Scipio). One other TV theme to add is the theme for the TV series The Adventurer. They can be heard on youtube. He had a Jazz band when he first started and you can hear his jazz influence in his music. He also did the music for Zulu, Born Free, High Road To China, Out Of Africa, Deadfall (he also takes part in this film as the conductor of his orchestra, you actually see him playing the music for the film which is supposed to be a concert) and one of my favourites the music for The Quiller Memorandum. He won an award for his music to the film Dances With Wolves. His music is different from Ennio Morricone's, you can hear in Morricone's music his classical influences compared to Barry's jazz influences. Both are great, and both lend something to the films they are used for. Music can enhance the film.

After his time as James Bond, I remember his roles in "The Rocketeer" ('91), "Hot Fuzz" ('07), and handful of episodes of the TV series "Chuck" ('07-'12), and a regular part on "Penny Dreadful" ('14-'16).
They toned down the zaniness from the Roger Moore movies, going for a more serious atmosphere... and I think Dalton did a fine job with what he was given... but the scripts were just... so-so. They didn't really catch on with the public, and Dalton was out after just two movies.

Dalton is definitely high on my list of Bonds. Charming and ruthless, and especially the balance of somebody visibly holding themselves under tight control, but also occasionally losing that control. Bond _should_ always be a slightly tragic figure...

Your reactions are so good, and never fail to cheer me up! You're fast approaching the Brosnan era, which is "my" Bond era, and I can't wait!

Loved your reaction as you enter the next phase of James Bond actors.
To me Timothy Dalton's portrayal of 007 is most like Ian Fleming's master spy of his novels. Intense, poised and witty, and a cold-blooded killer when necessary.
Cast note: Art Malik who played the imprisoned Afghan warlord Kamran Shah is also outstanding as the evil Salim Abu Aziz in James Cameron's True Lies.

Not sure Malik was outstanding in True Lies, we didn't see much of him and he was a bit cartoonish.
Also the Russian General who pretended to defect was Dr Kimball's "friend" in The Fugitive.

I actually saw this movie for the first time 3 months ago, and I remember just feeling so uneasy when he had the confrontation with Pushkin in the suite. Think I got goosebumps, and I was thinking, "Jesus, is he gonna kill him???"

John Rhys-Davies' acting in this scene was masterful...his facial expression when he says "Then I must die" with this mix of sad puppy eyes begging for mercy and at the same time resigning to accept his fate...he absolutely sells it!

My personal favourite Bond. Dalton did the darker, hard edged Bond way before Daniel Craig did it. He made the character more human.

Jen, thanks for continuing with this series. I always enjoy your reactions. Bond's rifle is a Walther 2000 Sniper. It was of bullpup design, meaning that the acton was positioned in the buttstock area, making it compact for its barrel length. Some were chambered in 7.62 NATO and some in 300 Winchester Magnum. They are very uncommon in the U.S.
