Felix is played by a different actor in every movie that he makes an appearance, with exception of Jeffrey Wright (Craig era) and David Hedison who you are yet to meet. Back in Dr. No, the 1st actor to play him was Jack Lord, best known as the lead role of Steve McGarrett in the original *Hawaii Five-O* : A perfect fit for the smooth, chisel jawed, CIA agent type.
Good reaction Coby. Domino is one of my favorite Bond Girls. So gorgeous. And if you didn't notice, Paula was played by the same actryas one of the fighting gypsy girls in From Russia with Love. Also, Felix gets played by several different actors in the early years.

Fiona Volpe (Lucianna Paluzzi) is my all-time favorite Bond femme fatale /crush. Also, I have to say Thunderball is for me the most entertaining Connery Bond. Hard to explain, but the double entendre dialog is the best, and as Coby observed , the underwater fight scene, if you really stay with it, is epic.
Those old jetpacks were real, not an effect, but they had a very limited range. As for Austin Powers, yes, now it's hard to watch these early Bond films without thinking of the similar scenes in Austin Powers. "Thunderball" is particularly well represented.
There is a long story about the behind-the-scenes problems with this film that led to a "remake" almost 18 years after it came out. The problems were between co-writer Kevin McClory and Bond's creator, Ian Fleming. The fundamental problem was that Fleming, McCrory, and Jack Whittingham devised this story as a screenplay before EON productions started and got the rights to make the Bond films. Fleming novelized the screenplay as Thunderball in 1961 and did not give credit to the other two writers in the book. There was a trial, and the matter was settled out of court. When the film was made, EON brought on both McCrory and Whittingham, and McCrory produced the movie for EON. Part of the settlement allowed McCrory to try his hand at another Bond film after 10 years...which he tried several times, finally making his one and only Bond film in 1983, Never Say Never Again, starring...Sean Connery and directed by Irvin Kirschner (The Empire Strikes Back). The whole story is a lot more complicated...these are the bare bones. Never Say Never Again was one of two Bond films made in the summer of 1983, the other being Octopussy, starring Roger Moore as Bond. Ironically, both Bond actors were real-life friends. The last note that Tom Jones sang of the theme song was so high and lasted so long that Jones collapsed after singing it. Largo's yacht is called the Disco Volante, meaning "Flying Saucer" in Italian. Many references played for laughs in Austin Powers come from Thunderball...almost too many to enumerate. Almost all of the Bond films have different actors playing Felix Leiter. They maintained continuity with Jeffrey Wright as Felix only during the Craig era. Rik Van Nutter plays Felix in this one. Only one actor before the Craig era played Felix more than once. David Hedison played Felix in Live and Let Die (1973) with Roger Moore's first adventure as Bond and returned to the role in 1989 in License To Kill, Timothy Dalton's second and last film as 007. Fun fact: David Hedison is Jodie Foster's father-in-law, as Jodie is married to Alexandra Hedison, David's only child. He passed in 2019. The final shot of the film showed Bond using the Fulton Surface-to-Air Retrieval System (STARS) or Skyhook. The CIA and the military have used this method to retrieve people since the 1950s. This was the first time it was seen on film; three years later, it was used in the John Wayne movie The Green Berets. It wouldn't be seen again in a movie until 2008's The Dark Knight when Batman used it.
By the way Broccoli and Salzman aren’t even credited as producers here (they get a Presents credit at the beginning). Kevin McClory is the credited Producer instead. Something tells me the legal issues led to this situation.
That was a real, working jetpack, called the Bell Rocket Belt, I think. The stuntman couldn't fly it very far because it only had about 60 seconds of fuel. When it runs out of juice you don't want to be high above the ground! It was also used a lot in the show Ark II.
Thunderball is up there amongst the best of the Bond films. Filled with gadgets, action and humor. Keep going with the Bond films. "You Only Live Twice" is another gem in the series.
The scene when Bond, with a beautiful woman in a exotic place, kills the henchman with the speargun is one of the best moments in the franchise. Pure Bond territory.
Yep Felix is played by a different actor in most of the films, except for David Hedison and Jeffrey Wright. The actor playing Felix here is Rik Van Nutter.
It's why he put the landing gear down on the Vulcan, after it landed on the water, so that when it sank and hit the bottom, they had enough clearance under the plane, to open the bomb bays doors and get the bombs out.
1:02:40 Actually, Claudine Auger's voice is dubbed in this movie. She spoke English with such a thick French accent that her voice ended up being dubbed. The voices of the Italian Adolfo Celi, who plays Largo, and the German Gert Fröbe, who played Goldfinger in the previous Bond movie, are also dubbed. You can find original, undubbed clips on UA-cam, and they are fun to listen to.
What happened to the ship, Disco Volante? It was purchased for the film for $500,000 and brought from Puerto Rico to Miami for refitting and refurbishment. The hydrofoil never sailed again after the filming. It was rented as a stationary houseboat, docked at a marina on Miami's MacArthur Causeway, until it sank at the dock in the early 1980s.
Actually, no; I'm pretty sure the Disco Volante actually was BLOWN UP. Was the largest explosion in film, at that point; they used ROCKET FUEL, and broke all the windows in the buildings on Nassau's High Street because the debris overshot the cameras WIDELY.
I think this was the first time Connery did the opening gun barrel himself. All the times before that it was his stun double. This is one of my favorite bond films. & one of the best Bond girls. Claudine Auger. It was the 60s it was kind of acceptable. Women wanted to be with him & men Wanted to be him.
That is correct. The other times Bob Simmons did the gun barrel sequence. Bob is also the "guy in the dress' that Bond fights in the beginning. Bob and Sean tangled again during the big underwater fight. After Thunderball, Bob went on to do ALOT of stunt work in all the Bond films.
"Don't drink, don't smoke, what do you do?" ~ Adam and the Ants - 1982. Caroline Munro who starred in the James Bond film, "The Spy Who Loved Me" is the woman dancing with Adam Ant in his "Goody Two Shoes" video. "DDDSWDYD?"is also a phrase used in the 1966 movie, "Grand Prix," between Francoise Hardy, and Antonio Sabato. This quote originates from a 1954 movie called, Johnny Guitar.
Claudine Auger's voice was dubbed by Nikki van der Zyl. Nikki also provided the voice of Honey Ryder in Dr No and many others especially in the 60's Bonds.
@@phila3884 Yes, you're right. Robert Rietti did a lot of the voices in the 60s Bonds too including Largo's and Tiger Tanaka in You Only Live Twice. Rietti also did Strangway's voice in Dr No.
Hi Coby, glad you enjoyed this film, as much as I did when I saw it first. It was the first underwater fight scene I had ever seen & made a big impression on me. For me Sean will always be he greatest Bond. :) As for the love interests, don`t forget it was the swinging `60`s, "make love, not war" was the mantra in use. Bonds behaviour in the `60`s is the most believable for me, later it get`s more fanciful. Although, we are led to believe all suave & sophisticated spies, should be able to use their magnetism in their line of work.
Thunderball is one of my favorite Connery Bond movies. Bond punching out a lady at the start really had me fooled. Tom Jones singing the lyrics to the theme song, Thunderball, accurately described Bond. I enjoyed watching this movie with you. Thank you, Coby!
Fun fact: The shot where Bond looks freaked out as the shark swims through the tunnel toward him was real fear. The shark was supposed to be on the other side of a glass wall, as seen in the next shot.
Always my favourite bond movie, partly as this was the first ever one that I watched aged 7 or 8 and I was so excited to see it. it was the talk of the school the next day as it was pretty much all of our first bond movie.
Gotta remember, back when this came out, all that underwater footage was pretty groundbreaking and audiences loved it. Today, for me at least, it starts to drag a bit after the first 10-15 minutes of scuba, by 20-25 minutes it really starts to drag. Still LOVE this movie but it’s WAY TOO MUCH S.C.U.B.A. that makes this one number 6 on my all time list.
Agreed. Technically the underwater battle is fantastic and looks gorgeous but boy does it drag on too long. But I give it a pass because as you say it was new and spectacular for its time and audiences loved it. Plus great John Barry score.
Thunderball is a fantastic Sunday movie, where you can just put it on in the background and dip in and out of it. I find that a great way of getting through the sloooooow underwater sequences.
@@SirHilaryManfat Good call, it’s perfect for that. I do the same with some of the odd-ball ones too, like Moonraker. Every time I come back to it makes me smile.
Yeah it's interesting she likes it cos most people these days usually call it boring, mainly cos you can't tell who is who with all the masks on and cos being underwater the action is slow. But Bond is in the navy so ofcourse he should be involved in sea battles and adventures.
@@countgeekula9143 that music used for the battle is called 007, technically that is Bond's theme not the other tune but they only used it in a couple of films then ditched it which is a shame. I was hoping they'd resurrect it in a modern version for the new films but of all the nods back to the old canon they never did the 007 theme.
I saw it at the NY World's Fair too. The Bond films constantly tried to incorporate new technology into his adventures, even if it didn't make much sense.
It was commissioned by the Army but it was rejected because the Army thought it was too noisy and it occupied both users' hands making him incapable of using a weapon.
"Thunderball" is definitely one of my favorite Bonds! Yeah... there was a lot of weird PT and exercise machines in the 60's & 70's. They are playing Baccarat, James Bond's game of choice, where the hand that is closest to 9 wins. Bond actually did have a martini in "Thunderball". He mixed himself one in his hotel room... glass with ice, Smirnoff Blue Vodka, and Cinzano white vermouth. He just never said the line.
Great reaction as always, Coby! Thunderball is my favorite Bond film, and I must say the three main reasons are 1) the fantastic performance by Sean Connery, 2) the great plot with SPECTRE stealing the nuclear bombs, and 3) my favorite Bond girl of all time - the incredible Claudine Auger as Domino. She is just stunning.
24:51 In the books Bonds favourite card game was always Chemin de Fer, a variation of the card game baccarat. Chemin de fer is a French phrase meaning ‘railway’ or ‘railroad’. Literally’ iron path’.
The Vulan Bomber was an actual underwater movie set in the Bahamas. Remains of the set is still there to this day. It was just a prop though, not a real Vulcan Bomber. Thunderball and Diamonds Are Forever are my favorite Sean Connery Bond movies. Keep em coming Coby.
The hydrofoil boat explosion at the end did not go as planned...the production crew had good contacts with the US Armed Forces from their previous movies, and SFX coordinator John Stears managed to get hold of a supply of rocket fuel. But they didn't have any experience with it, so they went overboard and literally doused the boat with the volatile liquid. The resulting blast was so violent, it shattered windows in Bay Street, Nassau, some 20 miles away. But Stears was still awarded with the Oscar for Special Effects. Peter Lamont, who was a junior member of the Art Department in this film (he later went on to be Production Designer for 9 Bond movies from the early 80s up to "Casino Royale" and won an Oscar for "Titanic"), remembered that after the movie came out, the military inquired about the little rebreather device and they asked for how long it could be used. The answer was "well, as long as you can hold your breath!" as of course it was just a prop.
So excited to watch this video! My favorite Bond film of all. It was the pinnacle of fun, had the best quips, great scenery, and cool fashions. This, to me, is the quintessential Bond film!
Love this video! Your reactions and commentary make the experience even better! It really is funny some of the dated womanizing. Bond is supposed to be a womanizer but not quite the way it was done then lol. They'd never get away with that today. I think you'll like the next one, too. You Only Live Twice. In that one, Donald Pleasance plays Blofeld, and you'll recognize right away that the Dr Evil look is based on him. A bit of trivia: Never Say Never Again was made in the 80s and was a remake of Thunderball (the screenwriter owned the rights), but it was from a different studio so they weren't allowed to use the Bond music, etc. At the same time, Octopussy (yes, that's the title) with Roger Moore was in theaters, so we had two competing Bond films out at the same time. Anyway, I hope you keep doing Bond films! I'm thoroughly enjoying these!
Don't know why but Thunderball seems to be my favorite Bond movie. I have watch Thunderball more often than any other Bond movies. Maybe it's old agent atmosphere what I like.
Hi Coby, you are doing a fantastic job critiquing "Sean Connery -bonds and my favourite films- a couple more official bonds to go. The last unofficial "never say never again" is a remake of "thunderball." I really love Sean doing the Bonds, but it must be said- its a couple hours you won't get back in your life! Keep up great work❤
Very nice, Coby! Enjoyed a lot this one. The game in casino is Chemin de fer, French card game played mainly in European and Latin American casinos. Chemin de fer derives from the Italian game baccarat, differing from it in that players bet one at a time against each other instead of against the house. As a casino game in the United States, chemin de fer was displaced by baccarat in the late 1950s.
"Where's the Polish guy??" Me watching this film for the first time. A director's note says that Kutze was rescued at the same time - and by the same plane - as Bond and Domino, off-screen. I'm glad he survived seeing as he fully redeemed himself. He realised Largo was mad and threw the arming device into the sea. He also released Domino - thus saving Bond's life.
Miss Coby, the Vulcan bomber under the water, was a full sized model. The remaims still sit on sea bed to this day. Also, if you were sitting in Domino's seat, in the pool seating area, where she tells Bond, "What sharp little eyes you have," and turned your head left. You would see a hotel construction site that would eventually be discontinued. It would be used for the Casino Royale Parkor chase 40 years later. The Girl Bond grabs to dance at the Kiss Kiss club, is a Bahamas resident, and appears at the poker game in Casino Royale, where Bond wins the Aston Martin DB5 I've met Martine Beswick (Paula) a couple of times. She's a total love.
If you hadn't already guessed, the BOND "franchise" made deals with the car companies to allow them to debut their upcoming model lines of cars. In the early movies this was FORD, so you saw 1965 model cars released in 1964 Bond movies for example. Clever marketing strategy and clearly successful right up on through the 1990's with various car manufacturers. One last thing, that air pickup at the very end was a legit crazy*** thing the Air Force dreamt up for recovering lost pilots during the cold war. Insane.
The card game they were playing was Baccarat/Chemin de Fer. It's a very high stakes table and plays like 21, but the number to hit is 9 (only the last number counts if the cards hit two digits, so 19 wins). In Chemin de Fer, the players pass the card shoe; there is no house dealer.
I believe the Casino Royale novel had Bond playing baccarat but they changed it to poker for the movie since many more people would actually know that game.
THE quintessential Bond movie. It has everything to expect from one from an awesome high stakes plot, great villain, awesome machines (Vulcan and Disco Volante), beautiful location, babes, great stunts etc.
Happy memories for me. My first film seen in a proper cinema paid for by my school friend's parents on his 14th birthday party. (Quite wealthy I wasn't) I just loved it then and still do. The underwater craft were state of the art. The jet pack was one of the first ever used. Note the hydrofoil ship as well also leading edge. Hope you liked our glorious Vulcan. It was a nuclear bomber during the Cold War. They were huge. A wonderful sight and sound. Glad you liked it.
I'm loving these Bond reactions. The man with the cat is Ernst Stavro Blofeld, although he isn't explicitly named here. You mention how great Christoph Waltz was and he does indeed play Blofeld in SPECTRE and No Time to Die. if you watch carefully you'll even see he has a white Persian cat in SPECTRE, although it's not on screen for long.
Love Bond's interaction with the physiotherapist, and Coby's reaction to it. Basically, I think we are supposed to believe that she is a strong, confident woman who finds Bond's initial flirting mildly annoying but is well able to stand up for herself, and would not agree to sex unless she wanted it.
Love seeing you watch these movies. Also there was only one boat at the begining they unlaoded the bombs, nukes, from the jet they hijacked and landed in the water and took the nukes from the plane to that specter guys boat.
Wow, so many memories. Haven't seen this movie since sometime last century. The car Bond uses in the beginning with the bullets shield in the back and what not was later sold as a miniature kids toy by Corgi. I had one.
My favorite Bond film, the franchise was really running on all cylinders with this one. Connery looked so comfortable in the role, had great underwater action, and probably the best collection of Bond beauties with Claudine Auger, Lucianna Paluzzi, and Martine Beswick. Funny thing, according to an interview on a Bond documentary the CIA actually contacted the producers to ask about the rebreather tube Bond used in the underwater fight scene, wanting to know how it worked. Unfortunately it was just a movie prop. Qui-Gon Jenn and Obi-wan Kenobi used something similar in their underwater scenes in The Phantom Menace, possibly influenced by the earlier Bond film.
I laughed so loud when Coby realized the bombs were taken from the bottom of the Vulcan and not another boat that you could have heard me in Hawaii. So looking forward to your reaction to You Only Live Twice. My favorite Bond movie because it is so over the top. I will make you a deal...I'll become a patreon member if Coby reacts to the best comedy ever made...It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World. 😁
Hey Coby, I'm gonna predict that the opening credits sequence for You Only Live Twice is gonna be your favorite! It's legitimately beautiful. Thanks for the watch along! ❤
Claudine Auger's swimsuits all look good (anything would on her), but that one-piece with the wrap around mesh panel and a glimpse of under boob was the one that figured heavily in my adolescent fantasies. Classic. Everyone likes to say that "Goldfinger" perfected the Bond formula, but "Thunderball" was where they went BIG. 30:00 Yes, that's what wetsuits looked like, usually in basic black. The bottom half, for colder water, was like a pair of high-waisted neoprene tights. The tail of the jacket fastened between your legs and kept the bottoms from slipping down and the jacket from riding up.
Coby + Connery -- Round 4 ;)

Yup, Lucianna was hot.
Men of dangerous tastes, I see. I approve!
Those old jetpacks were real, not an effect, but they had a very limited range.
As for Austin Powers, yes, now it's hard to watch these early Bond films without thinking of the similar scenes in Austin Powers. "Thunderball" is particularly well represented.
They are not jetpacks they are rocket packs.
Flight time was like 40 seconds.
Today we had jetpacks but not back then.
@@AdurianJeveryone calls them jet packs and they didn’t even have 40 seconds worth of propellant. More like 12 seconds in the early 60s
@@theonewhoknows2 They are still rocket packs
By far, my favorite Bond movie poster.
Absolutely! I saw it demonstrated in Point Magu, CA about a year or two before this film.
Pure Bond territory.
that and the scene with the German behemoth in You Only Live Twice.
I've been waiting for you to do Thunderball! It's one of my favorites!
48:04 if you look, all of her outfits in the film are black and/or white. Like a domino.
Do we want more bond?? ABSOLUTELY, coby😁👍 you and bond make a great team😁 bring it on! Great job, thank you✌😁
What happened to the ship, Disco Volante?
Much love for Thunderball. My favorite film of the Connery era.
thanks again for keeping up with the Connery Bonds. Next up, You Only Live Twice
Thunderball is easily Connery's best performance as 007. A beautiful film, an outstanding song from Tom Jones, and a lot of fun : )
Wow, now I remember that. But didn't realize the same voice was dubbed for Ursula Andress. I want to say Adolfo Celli's voice was dubbed too?
@@phila3884 Yes, you're right. Robert Rietti did a lot of the voices in the 60s Bonds too including Largo's and Tiger Tanaka in You Only Live Twice. Rietti also did Strangway's voice in Dr No.
Hi Coby, glad you enjoyed this film, as much as I did when I saw it first. It was the first underwater fight scene I had ever seen & made a big impression on me. For me Sean will always be he greatest Bond. :)
As for the love interests, don`t forget it was the swinging `60`s, "make love, not war" was the mantra in use. Bonds behaviour in the `60`s is the most believable for me, later it get`s more fanciful. Although, we are led to believe all suave & sophisticated spies, should be able to use their magnetism in their line of work.
The gentleman with the iconic eye patch playing the villain was the Italian actor Adolfo Celli. The eye-patch made his character unforgettable.
The underwater fight scene is absolutely tops! Great overall flick, Great reaction Coby as always. Looking forward your next Bond reaction!
thank you !
I'm glad you enjoyed "Thunderball" Coby. Now the next James Bond movie would be "You Only Live Twice" from 1967.
Coming soon !
Thunderball is one of my favorite Connery Bond movies. Bond punching out a lady at the start really had me fooled. Tom Jones singing the lyrics to the theme song, Thunderball, accurately described Bond. I enjoyed watching this movie with you. Thank you, Coby!
Thanks for watching !
Fun fact: The shot where Bond looks freaked out as the shark swims through the tunnel toward him was real fear. The shark was supposed to be on the other side of a glass wall, as seen in the next shot.
Glad to have you back giving extraordinary reactions and incredible expressions that are so entertaining!
More to come!
yeah, it's been a crap day... so a little Coby and Bond is just what I needed!
hope you get a couple smiles here !
18:13 Connery's line "another time, another place" was a subtle reference to his 1958 film, Another Time, Another Place.
That Jetpack he used to escape was real I saw it being used in person in the 64 65 New York Worlds Fair!
that's amazing!!
@@criminalcontent Used in the opening ceremony of the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
@@MarkSlavin did not know that !
Right on my brother.
Thunderball, definitely my favorite Connery Bond. Thank you for the fun reaction.
Our pleasure!
Great reaction as always, what doesn't get enough credit is how good the remastering of the picture quality in these films is done
It's gotta be fairly big for a cockpit to host 4 people abreast of each other.
In the game of Baccarat (Bond's card game) whomever gets closer to 9 or 9 wins a 10 card counts as zero
My fave Bond movie, so happy Coby felt similar!!!
Keep up great work❤
Thank you !!
My favourite Sean Connery 007 is "You Only Live Twice"
Yes! That’s mine too.
I'm Loving watching this FAB FILM with you
Miss Coby, the Vulcan bomber under the water, was a full sized model.
The Girl Bond grabs to dance at the Kiss Kiss club, is a Bahamas resident, and appears at the poker game in Casino Royale, where Bond wins the Aston Martin DB5
I've met Martine Beswick (Paula) a couple of times. She's a total love.
Sean Connery spent his last years living in Nassau! Great place!
Best scene is the underwater fight scene. I would always swim in the ocean as a kid and play fight like those scenes.
Insane.
I loved this, and hope that you'll do the next Bond video on my favorite ever Bond film, "You Only Live Twice!"
Next up !
This was the first Bond I remember seeing, and the opening Jet Pack scene was Amazing.. to a 6 year old me in the 70's
Almost, but you’re forgetting hollowed out volcano lairs and bad guys petting white cats a bit too hard? That’s the next one🤪

Love your reactions Coby, and another opportunity to watch this film again. 😊
Happy memories for me. My first film seen in a proper cinema paid for by my school friend's parents on his 14th birthday party. (Quite wealthy I wasn't)
I just loved it then and still do.
Claudine Auger..who played Domino is up there as one of my favourite all-time Bond girls.
Great time.
Keep watching more Bond movies please.
All of them
I'm loving these Bond reactions.
The "widow" Bond has a fight with in the beginning was Sean Connery's stunt double Bob Simon who was about 8 inches shorter than Connery.
Beautiful Coby..I have been wafting for you to finish the Bond series. I know this will be..smashing!
ADOLFO CELI (1922 - 1986) appeared in nearly 100 movies, a great actor.
I get so happy everytime I see one of these Bond reactions love them :D
"A little jet pack to start ?" Hahaha your reactions crease me up Coby, keep them coming 😂 👍
More to come!
