Tarnished Archeologist would make a great guest to speak about Elden Ring and Dave could intuitively bridge the concepts that are mirrored in A Song of Ice and Fire. SmoughTown would also be an incredible guest. I have never heard another UA-camr go in depth about Elden Ring lore than SmoughTown. He essentially does what Dave does for A Song of Ice and Fire.

The 2 fingers and 3 fingers is all George. There’s a huge rabbit hole about the orthodox civil war with Christianity with regards to fingers. So much so that it was installed in the art. People holding up 3 or 2 fingers to signal what side of the conflict they were on. It was a bloody horrible time in Christian history that never gets taught. George is all about this type of history.

Not sure if you'll get to it on this stream but it's definitely worth exploring the connection between godwyn/deathblight and the weirwoods; Godwyn's corpse, separated from its soul is entangled in the roots of the erdtree (a greenseer, not to mention godwyn is essentially a targaeryan), and is the source of the deathblight seen all over the lands between, a bit like the weirwood network. We're also told the souls of the 'dead' are absorbed into the erdtree network to be born again, so godwyn's deathblight can be seen as a corruption of the erdtree network, with him being a sort of unwilling greenseer invading that network.

About the Stormlord/God being trapped. It could simply be like the Stark kings in the crypts: petrified greenseers. The Storm God being an ancient greenseer who might have wanted to take over (warging into hawks and such), and was struck down by other lords and then interred in the weirwood net to keep feeding the power of the old gods.

Elden ring and asoiaf are stories about love
between a rebellious moon woman (Ranni, Daenerys) that has a dragon (Adula, Drogon) and a black wolf man warrior(Blaidd, Jon). Will Jon like Blaidd chose love over a magical duty dictated by a higher power and die?
Black moon broke and white one survived.

3:11:10 I bet this was discussed but just in case, in Elden Ring there is a big battle where you fight Fia's champions. The arena is in a thicket of roots and she summons the warriors to confront you.
This group can include the infamous Lionel , (who only ever appears in phantom form) and more importantly , *a sorcerer that you meet early game, who seemingly dies only to also appear as a root phatom as well...*

A long awaited video. Fun Elden Ring fact the Walls of Leyndell are actually taller then the Wall in ASOIF by about 100 feet more the only thing to breach them was a massive Dragon and if you thought ASOIF Dragons were big Elden Ring Dragons especially the older ones are even bigger.
By the way 100% recommend you play Elden Ring, my tips as a long time player since 2022 in fact is level vigor to 60 ASAP no matter what, secondly treat every fight with caution things can kill you even if you think you'd actually be able to win without taking damage, third thing make full use of the craftable consumables it will save you a lot of headaches, also don't travel at night unless you are actively intended to because there are enemies that only come out at night and will wreck you. Also when you get into the world DON'T attack the Golden Horsemen or the first guy you meet both will kill you really quickly. Also if you do Co-Op prepare for invaders you have been warned
That said this was my most wanted video for a while and hope for more like this again, I would recommend playing the game though the game's lore is best understood after a few playthroughs, heck I'd recommend watching BlueLizardJello who has two playthroughs in which he dives into everything from the lore of the game to things you can do in it, he is a Souls Veteran and can also give a lot of tips, he even has a tutorial series of Everything Elden Ring which will teach you to play. There is also MajorSlackGaming who is another Elden Ring content creator who is good at teaching you about how to handle various things and making good use of any number of things you'll find in the game.

Some are speculative or a stretch, I know. And I'm sure there's more connections or similarities I'm missing, but this is what I found after 100%ing ER.
    - The Red Comet or Bleeding Star or Mormont's Torch /the Blood Star which granted blood and fire thorn sorceries
    - Limb grafting / what Qyburn possibly did to Gregor
    - Stormveil / Storms End
    - Mt. Gelmir, Volcano Manor / Valyria
    - Raya Lucaria / either The Citadel or more likely Asshai or the Church of Starry Wisdom
    - Starfall crater / Starfall in Dorne
    - Swamp of Aeonia / possibly the swamps of the Neck
    - The flooded area of Raya Lucaria / possibly the swamps of the neck
    - Blaidd / Robb Stark's direwolf head sewn on his body
    - Spirit callers / shadow binders
    - Graven Mages or Graven Schools / the collective spirits of the weirwoods
    - bewitching branch / Egg's sister Rhae's love potion or Maggi's love potions
    - Ainsel underground river/ the rivers below Westeros in Bloodraven's cave and the cave the Arianne finds
    - Dany's handmaid talking of two moons/Ranni's Darkmoon and Rennala's full moon
    - Haligteee & the Golden Erd Tree/Weirwood & Blackbarked Trees in Qarth or Ebony and Weirwood being coupled together
    - Glintstone colors red, green, blue/ the trident & fire (red) nature-balance (green) and blue (ice)
    - red Glintstone described as crystalized blood from sacrifice / weirwood sap described as red and hard as ruby
    - crystal tears coming from the Erd Tree / weirwood sap described as red and hard as ruby
    - The icey Zamor warriors / The Others
    - Blackflame sorcery / Blackfyre
    - Concealing veil / glamoring
    - Rya disguised as human / glamor
    - Frozen Needle thrusting sword / "When the spring thaw comes, they will find your body with a needle still locked tight between your frozen fingers" -Jon to Arya
    - Varré's Bouquet Hammer / resembles a Weirwood
    - Godwyn half-dead in the Haligtree roots or corpses being entangled in Erdtree roots in burial chambers / Bloodraven half-dead in the weirwood roots
    - Giant Bat enemies, with Harpies singing to them in the old tongue (Latin), giant bat skull in Bloodraven's cave. black bat of Harrenhal. Whent/Lothston Bat sigil, said to have employed an army of giant bats
    - runes that grant power / runes of the first men
    - Black knife assassins / The Faceless men
    - phantom tortoises / "phantom tortoises have been seen carrying messages between the windowless houses on Warlock’s Way" -Dany V ACOK
    - shabriri "grapes" eaten by the blind to see the grace light / "And Blind Sybassion the Eater of Eyes can see again," -Dany V ACOK
    - Robert Strong (who I believe is headless) / the headless Mausoleum Knights. (Which could both be borrowed from sleepy hollow / headless horseman)
    - also Limgrave sounds like limb grave, tree limbs, a grave in a tree / the weirwoods
    - the blue barriers that prevent the use of spirit summons or force Torrent to disappear are similar to the ward of the Wall where cold hands can't pass the magic barrier much like Orell's eagle.
    - The Elder Brother (who could possibly be Ser Morgoth based on the description of both characters) / Margit and Morgott
interesting tidbit from Tolkien about Morgoth.
    > Melkor is the most powerful of the Valar but he turns to darkness and is renamed Morgoth.
When you fight Margit, the Fell Omen he is actually Morgott using a false title. When you fight him the final time he reveals he is actually Morgott, the Omen King. Not just a strong Omen, but a demigod.
So if Ser Morgoth from ASOIAF is playing off of GRRM'S love for Tolkien by borrowing the name, then it stands to reason he would recycle this idea in Elden Ring. Thus the continuing theme of revealing a a true or new identity. Elder Bro = Morgoth? I believe it. Especially when you tie in the godly part as the elder brother is a holy man.
Edit: the Faceless Men using skin for magic / the Godskin nobles and apostles using skin for magic

Thank you for this. The Lands Between is my favorite fantasy setting because of the cooperation between Miyazaki, his team and George R.R. Martin. Experiencing the "game of thrones" between different outer gods and their vessels along with exploring all these different cultures, races, characters and their mythological references is so much fun.
ASOIAF is my favorite book series and Dark Souls is among my favorite game series, so a mix of the two had a lot to live up to and it somehow did (and exceeded it).

Rykard from Elden Ring is pretty much a one-to-one to Stannis. As “one-to-one” one can get. He’s also one of Miyazaki’s (game director) favourite George Martin characters written for Elden Ring, so I get the impression Martin had some fun with writing Rykard😅
    - Rykard serves a royal family of siblings and parents who are much more respected than he, just as Stannis is with the Baratheons.
    - He is expected to serve the Elden Throne(/Marika) as an inquisitor, just as how Stannis is expected to serve the realm on behalf of, and as, Robert sees fit.
    - the realm of the Erdtree and Marika sends Rykard to claim hold over an ancient land called Mt. Gelmir, allowing more political control for Marika, just like how Stannis is entrusted with Dragonstone.
    - Rykard eventually rebels against the Throne to claim it for himself, which drives many of the men of the Erdtree towards Rykards banner - as they see it an act of ambitious bravery instead of treachery, just as how Stannis rebels the Crown to claim it for himself - seen as an act of bravery.
    - Rykard’s true intentions behind rebelling the crown is because he’s secretly being seduced by an ancient Serpentine-God, which uses black/dark/blasphemous magic to gain what he wants, just as how Stannis is seduced by - what they claim to be as - “the red woman” who too uses dark/prohibited magic to gain what Stannis wants
-the men of Rykard finds out the true nature of his ambitions (the seduction to dark magic), and they lose respect and leave him. Just as how the people around Stannis, who once respected his bravery, look down on him after finding out the true intentions behind his “rebellion”
EDIT: you should definitely have on ‘Jack is a Mimic’ at some point. He’s probably the only person, at his level, with the most respected knowledge of both Elden Ring and ASOIAF, simultaneously. He’ll have a lot more to say, a lot more in-depth with the ideas of Elden Ring, its characters, its events, themes and concepts, and how they all relate to and parallel with ASOIAF, giving indications on what exactly Martin means with Elden Ring, and how it may relate to Winds/Dreams

“This is the nature of war, whose stake is at once the game and the authority and the justification. Seen so, war is the truest form of divination. It is the testing of one's will and the will of another within that larger will which because it binds them is therefore forced to select. War is the ultimate game because war is at last a forcing of the unity of existence. War is god.”-Cormac McCarthy
This quote is running through my head whenever I play Elden Ring. Towards the end of the game when you fight Godfrey you can see the golden thread of grace ethereally binding him and the tarnished together, pulling them towards conflict where one will be selected.

Having the separate sets of children have names all starting with the same letter that matches one of their parents is actually a very Anglo-Saxon thing to do, so it makes things feel both ancient and English as you read them, even if you don't necessarily understand the connection between the names and that feeling.

Whenever I get sad about TWOW not being released yet, I remind myself that George has been out there working on Elden Ring lore, Blood and Fire, co-producing House of the Dragon, etc. and I truly think that these side projects are him searching for the inspiration he needs to write Winds, or for the spark of insight he needs to solve his current Myreenese knot he is working through. He hasn’t forgotten his fans, he’s just working on a huge, difficult project as a dedicated creative person.

Another thing that was not brought or briefly touched on was Radagon's imprisonment of Marika, not necessarily the Greater Will as most people have speculated they were abandoned by that god at this point. This fits in with the whole weirwood system "heart-tree" in conflict with itself perspective that I think David and Michael share. Radagon, (our Azor Ahai figure) does not want the player to supplant the Golden Order (Current weirdwood system), he wanted to stop Marika but was unable to until she dealt enough damage to herself because breaking the Elden Ring meant also shattering herself to give way to the new order. (this is the Nissa Nissa/Daenarys figure giving her literal life and the Elden Ring a more metaphysical/symbolic representation of life/cycle of life.)

    A few parallels and takeaways:
The Others = The Old Gods = The Zamour
Both describe lost moons that have been shattered and fall to earth. Elden Ring uses the the pieces for thrones and talismans, ASOIAF uses "Oily black stone" and fallen starts for statues, thrones & swords. The Zamour in generally could've had more lore in general.
The second moon = The moon of Nokstella
Dragons are from an outer god, The Greater Will, in Elden Ring, and in ASOIAF dragons are said to come from another moon. Fallen celestial bodies being the gateway for divine influence is a regularly occurring theme. Both have legends of men becoming dragon, either by consuming hearts or another ancient blood ritual in ASOIAF
    Faceless Men = Godskin Nobles
The Godskins seek to bring death to the immortal, likewise; the Faceless Men believe all other gods to be false except death. The Nobles wear the skins if their victims for power, while the faces collected by the Faceless create actual glamours they can use.
Glintstones = Glass Candles = Valyrian Steel
Primeval Glintstone is said to contain the soul of the sorcerer who wields it after piercing their own heart. Glass candles are said to be able prolong ones life, presumably by sacrificing other's life. A long standing theory has been that the slaves sacrificed at the 14 Flames were the source for the magic that fueled the Valyrian Swords. The connection is Soul Manipulation.
    My fav: Jon = Ranni
The promised hero who undo's the old, unfair order and embarks on a journey of peace supported by their friends. They both have cold swords, divine bloodlines, mysterious births. I also like to believe the end of ASOIAF, like Ranni, Jon will remove magic and the influence of the gods from the world to give the world a chance to be free.
Post-Edit: Can't stop thinking about the white walkers having the name The Others, and Marika's line to Radagon, "You are yet to become me, yet to become a god, let us both be shattered, mine other self." The idea of Otherism, having an identical half that is separate from one's self, permeates both works.

One small point that I think you might be interested in, there is an item, a blacksmith's hammer (symbolism) That explicitly States that Marika broke the elden ring and Radagon was trying to repair it. The into cinematic shows her hair switching from gold to red as they fight over her body. I bring it up because my interperetation is that Radagon loved Renalla, but he returned to Marika because it was his duty. Then when she breaks the ring, he cares more about his duty to the golden order than her. This reflects the 'duty vs love' between jon and dany, as well as Azor Ahai and Nissa Nissa. So probably Azor is still trying to hold the Weirwood net together while she is trying to escape.

I'm a big fan of Dark Souls as well, so I might be able to give a quick retrospective and description of the art you brought up. It's worth bringing up on it's own merits because it's one of the coolest worlds ever invented for a video game. Dark Souls, in my opinion, is a a mythologization of the heat death of the universe as fantasy instead of sci fi, told through a fictional mythology/cosmology. The center of it all is Gwyn, this world's Zeus who is the god of entropy- he triumphed over the stone dragons who, as always in Miyazaki's worlds, represent the dinosaurs as a stand in for the pre-historic past that was stable and unchanging. Gwyn in particular was fond of fire and light, and he introduced energy into the world by tying it to a constantly burning flame that acted as the engine for the world in the 'Age of Fire', the era he brought about that defined itself by it's disparities, i.e. light and dark, life and death, hot and cold, male and female, where before everything was stony and grey and indistinct. However, as this is a story of heat death, this fire has reached the point where it's burning itself out and his world of disparities is collapsing in on itself, life and death start to blur together resulting in creatures like the player, an undying zombie human that is both alive and dead. And his latest child is a gender confused snake enby who is both male and female.
The player in all three games is a prophecized hero called the Chosen Undead whose role is to tear down the edifices of the old order, empowering your soul by consuming the souls of others as you go, ultimately to the point where you can access the ever burning flame and sacrifice yourself, your own soul as fuel to keep it going longer. Or, to choose not to and enter a new age of 'dark', an age without gods or dragons or demons where humanity, beings that possess a tiny fragment of the dark soul, can rule.
The guy in the painting is Artorias, one of Gwyn's champions who is a renowned hero that famously fell fighting the Abyss, which is a corruptive concentration of dark soul energy that overpowers everything it conquers. As he was dying deep underground, he protected his constant companion, Sif the wolf, allowing him to escape. He went on to loyally protect his masters grave for the rest of his life, right above the spot where he died. In the art, they're portrayed as Unkindled Ash, which are dead and buried Chosen Undead candidates who failed to link the flame, but were brought back to life in Dark Souls 3 for a second chance because the current Chosen Undead, who were born and bred for the purposes of sacrificial suicide in the flame, are refusing to do it. So the firekeepers are desperate to grab anyone they can find to kick the can down the road, and resort to bringing the failed second stringers back to life to try again. Unkindled Ash are basically fire wights reanimated by flame, all the bosses have flame powers, as depicted in the painting where Artorias and Sif are animated by it after they've been brought back to life. Lorewise probably not possible lol, because Artorias got too fucked up by the Abyss to be properly revived.

This crossover of Elden Ring's ice and fire themes with ASOIAF lore is 🔥! GRRM’s influence really shines, especially in how both worlds explore the balance between ancient powers and the struggle for control. It’s like the Lands Between is a twisted reflection of Westeros! The lore depth is insane, and I love how every detail feels intentional. Imagine if future expansions dive even deeper into this!

The Mesoamerican sun rebirth bit near the start of the stream reminds me of the fantasy / sci-fi series "Book of the New Sun" by Gene Wolfe. Martin has mentioned this series as inspiration a few times. Basically the main dude is a torturer (lol) who ends up (spoiler alert) becoming this god king kind of figure who goes to space to bring the new sun. It's a mind fuck in the best way. ASOIAF fans should check it out

Been a while since I read the book so I might be misremembering some details, but I'm fairly sure there's a prequel novel in the Magic: the Gathering setting where a hyper advanced magical people have a flying station that gathers up white mana (magical energy from plains, open spaces, holy places, etc) and dumps all of it over the people's capital city, destroying everything before ascending into the sky to become a new moon for the planet. Wonder if the author was a fan of early ASOIF or the same myths that GRRM draws from, heh heh

I have a few bullet points I would like to leave:
    1. It didn't come up but would have been perfect for Michael is the fact that unwanted royal omen bairns aren't merely condemned to the sewers but are thrown down a well. That tracks *very* closely to one of his theories.
    2. Eldric didn't bring it up but the Shattering pitted Radagon and Marika against each other with Marika trying to shatter the Elden Ring and Radagon trying the mend it. Perfect Azor Ahai / Nissa Nissa parallel. Bonus, Radagon's name is an anagram for 'A dragon'.
    3. The lore around Shadowbound wolves is quite murky. Yes, Marika and Ranni have wolves but if Miquella and Malenia do then we never hear about them. No word on the Gloam-Eyed Queen's potential wolf either.
    4. The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC expands and enriches the Lore and implications for ASOIAF quite a bit, especially in regards to how Marika became a God in the first place. If you guys do another of these lore summits hopefully Eldric can get further into it.
    5. The hierarchy at the top of the cosmology is that there are Outer Gods (Lovecraftian Old Ones) who then choose an Empyrean to be their God in the Lands Between (the Spiritual power) and in turn the God of the Lands Between has an Elden Lord (the Temporal power).
    6. I don't agree with Eldric that Godfrey and the Tarnished were banished into death. If you pay attention to the cinematic cut scene at the start of the game you will see a Deathbed Companion (Fia?) administering rites to Tarnished corpses to send them back to the Lands Between. Meaning wherever the Tarnished are they have to die in order to get sent back to the Lands Between.

Hey David! I'm a big elden ring fan (though the dlc kinda ruined the lore for me, ngl). I've always loved making my own ASOIAF comparisons within the game, and I also loooove the in game music. Just a fun little thing for me, Plasidusax's boss theme has some moments that resemble Daenerys' songs. I don't think there's any reason for it, but it's one of my favorite boss themes, and I think about it every time I listen to it. You should check it out!
