  • This is a short video previewing the next epic Ship Safari that will be coming to MidShipCinema in early 2024. In 1997, after years of anticipating and months of planning, Peter Knego ventured off to the Ukraine to visit the forgotten and forlorn former Cunard liners, the 1954-built LEONID SOBINOV (ex SAXONIA, CARMANIA) and the 1955-built FEDOR SHALYAPIN (ex IVERNIA, FRANCONIA). Having spent their past two decades of service in Soviet and later Ukrainian hands, both liners had been laid up for several years and would soon be headed for the scrap heap. Although faded, these two classic beauties were still largely as they had been in their final Cunard years, thanks to their quality construction and their owners' inability to afford significant updates. Music licensed from Artlist: "Piano Sonata In C Minor" by Raviv Leibziger. #cunard #cunardline #classicoceanliners #classicships #oldships #carmania #franconia #ivernia #saxonia #leonidsobinov #fedorshalyapin #ukrainianships #iliychevsk

      Thank you, Frank. These two ships, AUGUSTUS, AUREOL, WINDSOR CASTLE and AMERICA were my "Holy Grail" ships. I'm so happy to have been able to walk their decks and now much of FEDOR has been preserved here in my Oceanside home.

    Thanks for all of your videos Peter, it’s sad to see these wonderful old ships in decline after many years in service . In 2012 I was on a cruise on the new Queen Elizabeth where I met a fellow passenger who served as a steward on the Franconia, we had conversations about ships in general as I was also in the merchant navy on Esso Tankers.
    Thanks

    I'm looking forward to this, Peter! Just the preview was enjoyable. In photographs I've seen elsewhere I noticed how one of the sisters had a bar on the front of which there was a design that looks like Gothic arches. I saw the same bar in a photo from the ship's days under the Russian flag and noticed how that decorative work on the front of the bar was upside-down!

    • @midshipcinema
      @midshipcinema  8 місяців тому +2

      I wonder if this is the Parasol Bar from the FRANCONIA that became FEDOR S. Were the "arches" in brass trim and was the bar circular? If so, I will show a glimpse of it through a dirty window as it was locked up.

    • @andrewbrendan1579
      @andrewbrendan1579 8 місяців тому +1

      @@midshipcinema That sounds right, Peter. My recollection is that the bar was circular and those arches I saw may very well have been brass. I'm going to check the illustrations in my liner books and I'll be on the lookout for your video. Looking forward to it!

    I sailed on the Leonid Sobinov twice in 1978 and 1979, line voyages from Adelaide Australia to Tilbury England then again Adelaide to Southampton. I was only 10 and 11 first time sailing and loved every second on board. The second trip er boarded on 2 days after the red bikini girl incident and thay was a very different trip after her escape.
    I have been on many nrwer amd larger cruise ships since but the Leonid Sobinov is always my all time favourite.
    The only sister i never got to see was the Fedor have been on or seen three.

      @@midshipcinema have found my all time favourite photo of the Leonid Sobinov in Port Said taken on the 6th Feb 1978. Is a print from dads 35mm slide.
      Only I can't figure out how to send or add picture.
      We also have some photos of rear decks looking up to funnel and pool, crossing the line ceremony, looking out over the bow in the Indian Ocean.
      1 of my memories is during the afternoon while in the Ocean Lounge some of the Russian sailors were doing some kind of practice. Thete were quite a few of us kids sitting on the stairs watching and laughing at their antics. There was a bigger Russian or Ukrainian bloke who we think must have been the instructor kept running towards us waving his hands in the air and us kids jumping up and running up the stairs towards the Odessa Bar, then when he turned and walked away we would come back down and sit.
      Later that night during the Russian fairwell show we found out what they were practising. It was a comedy sketch of SwanLake. I think mum may have a photo of that with the men dressed in their tutus and orange's in their bra tops

      I also have all the daily program sheets from both voyages with what entertainment was on that night, what films were playing who the captain was and cruse director, how far the ship had sailed during the previous 24 hours and at what speed, the temperature.
      Also dad has a reasonable big deck plan of the Leonid Sobinov which I would like to get copied and lamented.
      How it would be nice to have our old key from our cabin A43

    • @midshipcinema
      @midshipcinema  8 місяців тому

      Thank you so much! ASTORIA is laid up and slowly decaying at Rotterdam. The owner had no idea what he was doing when he bought her and has basically abandoned the project, so it looks like her next stop is Aliaga or Alang.

      @midshipcinema Hi Peter thank you for your response
      The last information was given by Marine Traffic of the Astoria as having departed from Dordrecht on the 19-11-23 to a default destination expected arrival 24-12-23. I dare say her destination would have been the scrapyard. But it's not conclusive. Just wondering if anyone had any other info, Looking forward Peter in watching your future most informative videos. My heartfelt thanks

      Interesting. She's been reported departing Rotterdam several times. Haven't heard any confirmation from my friends and contacts there on the latest report. She can't move under her own power, so tugs will be needed and that usually takes a while to muster. :)@@user-lv5tn5hx2n

    Been meaning to ask for a while, but how exactly do you go about getting parts off a ship that's being scrapped? Way too late to do so for liners by now, but I would like to see about getting a few bits and bobs off something like a freighter.

    • @midshipcinema
      @midshipcinema  8 місяців тому

      Thanks for asking. It would take a long time to fully explain. You can find much info on my efforts to buy the treasures via the MidShipCentury.com website where I have links to the videos "On The Road To Alang", "The Sands Of Alang" and "Torn Castle". There are also many articles if you Google my name and Alang. And, of course, I have many things still available on MidShipCentury.com, although the site needs some major updating. :)

      Appreciate the response, as well as it's likely not an easy thing to do saving parts from the cutting torch on the far side of the world.
      Top of my list of "to find" items is an engine telegraph and/or a ship's wheel, as I've always been more fascinated with how a ship is actually run over its luxuries and appointments (though those are certainly very nice as a passenger), and with ships getting more and more electronic, you just don't see the old fashioned mechanical kind anymore, nor a helmsman cranking on the big spoked wheel up on the bridge anymore.
