SUN VIKING Decked! (A History and Top-to-Bottom Tour)
Переглядів 4,1 тис.12 годин тому
In the long history of Royal Caribbean Cruises, the 1972-built SUN VIKING, which was a mere fraction the size of their current megaships at 18,500 gross tons, gets MidShipCinema's vote for the line's prettiest ship (at least externally speaking). This 34 minute video tells the SUN VIKING story from concept to scrapping and includes footage shot on board by Peter Knego in 1994, along with a bevy...

What is it that they don't want us to know about the demise of this beautiful ship? The City Of Stockton has refused to respond to our requests to take footage of the AURORA at the Lind Marine facility at Mare Island, where she was towed last month for the sad process of demolition. The 70-year old passenger ship, which has enjoyed a rich history and a rollercoaster ride of a career, from pione...

Sadly, December 21, 2024 marked the end of a 69 year career for the MV AURORA, a ship that until late last year was the subject of much hope and celebration during a long process of restoration. After partially sinking this year and making headlines for all the wrong reasons as she was subsequently refloated, the AURORA was towed away from her last Stockton berth on December 20, arriving at Mar...

Its in good hands friend.. unfortunate ending but for the best
What about the sunken minesweeper that was lying beside the Aurora
I'm pretty sure it is still there.
Great update Peter. Any idea whatever happened to the Strom Zinc mural? Or just "gobbled up" once the torches hit? I've never been a huge Royal Caribbean fan, but if I had to choose one it would have to be either SUN VIKING or SONG OF NORWAY once she was stretched.
Thank you, Alan! With you on the two ships and RCI in general. My Indian friend Kaushal reached out to the Pakistani breakers with no success. I'm afraid the Strom, those tables, and maybe even her builder's plate were recycled or absorbed into the local marketplace.
Thanks for the update !
Thank you. As the story continues, hope to provide more in the future.
What a great tour! It’s fascinating how large, elegant ships were something of a “lost art” between the end of the ocean liner era and the SS Norway/ Sovereign OTS era of the late 80s. It’s somewhat astounding just how small - and, frankly, tacky - this seems compared to not only today’s mega ships but also to the liners from the 50s and 60s. My first cruise was on Majesty OTS with my grandparents, I remember how awestruck they were by it - sort of makes sense now looking at this first generation of cruise ships.
Thank you for posting and agreed on the lost art of ship design. Yes, the evolution from the first generation cruise ships of the early 70s to the mega ship has been quite overwhelming. The tacky part has evolved, too. Today, we have a much fancier, more comfortable and soulless (in some ways) version of what the smaller ships provided.
At some time they become just old rust buckets.
Don't we all?
Thanks Peter for the update.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 😥 But I hate the pictures of the dying swan. We should have brought the ship back to Germany because of its special history.
Thank you, Pazulo. It really is a shame she could not go back to Germany. The cost of getting her there safely (on a barge) is probably beyond any reasonable sum.
Sure do wonder what happen to the Chris guy that was trying to bring her back, he did lots of work and than sold her, he had to have know it needed bottom work, guessing he didn't have enough money. Wish he would make a last video of all those why's .
That's what I hope too! I followed his channel with joy and the hope that this beautiful ship would be saved. I knew the "Wappen von Hamburg" (built in 1965) that followed her personally from a trip to Heligoland. This ship sadly ended up as the "MV Mercator" and was torn apart by excavators. So I had hoped very much that her much more beautiful and historic predecessor could be preserved. Fare well "Wappen von Hamburg"!
Hi Peter, my trip to the ship was a success! I actually managed to get inside the dockyard fence by asking the security guard if I could go inside and take pictures. He said yes and he allowed me five minutes inside to take pictures. But I was quickly accosted by workers, who let me off the hook because the security guard had in fact let me in. If you want to use the photos in a video with credit. I would by happy to give you them, if you have somewhere I can contact you and send them. Best regards, Worby
That's wonderful, Worby! Good on you for trying and for your success. It's too bad the City Of Stockton is being so over protective in terms of documenting the ship from a safe distance but nice that the security guard granted you access. You can reach me via the MidShipCentury website and of course, if I can use your images, I would be more than happy to provide proper credit. Thanks again for your kindness.
Thank you Peter
Thank you, Peter! :)
Great video as usual my dear big brother !!! 😃
Thank you, brother Eren! I'll share tomorrow when there are more eyes. :)
good detailed update. thanks. in the barge looks like a scrap fiberglass boat to me. probably not from the aurora.
Ahhhh. Thank you. Perhaps the barge contents are a mix of different projects.
It would be cool to have a piece of that ship
I'm fairly certain the unidentified white thing is a fiberglass boat hull unrelated to the ship itself. I can only see it as such :)
Thank you. I think you are correct and someone else has also said that, so makes sense. :)
Thanks for documenting all of this. Hugs from her former model maker.
Thanks so much. I was happy to share what my friends sent me. :)
What a great pity! With all the money seemingly around, I thought she was going to be saved! 😢😢😢
@@johnlunnun9769 Sadly that all changed in late 2023.
I wish it was sailing
Sorry for being too rude with you about ignoring school to see a ship. Watching ships is interesting but school is more relevant than that.
What are you talking about? Fifty years ago when I was a kid and got great grades so my parents could take me to see a ship once every couple of months? Ships that would never return? Strange to bring that up here but OK... :)
that White Bit in the corner to me looked like a fiberglass pool liner. Could the previous owner have tried to install a Drop in fiberglass pool liner into one of the open decks as he intended to live on it and wanted a pool. Who knows. just my brain firing away with an answer. I could be wrong.
No, alas, there was no pool on board. Just the forward hold hatch that was used as a pool many decades ago. But good guess. :)
You should be aloud to document this history! This is so sad. Especially since you have belongings and memorabilia on it.
This makes me so very sad to see.
They must be doing asbestos abatement beforehand
Yes.
I feel all of this was deliberate
By whom?

Went there in October so cool to see and Bob was amazing!
Thanks so much Peter! Your videos are such a treat.
Thank you! Hoping they get more views in time. :)
I really like these classic ships and enjoy the decked videos with the maps. Thank You Peter. I am a bit young to remember these beautiful ships and really only been on modern ships but I prefer the looks of the older ships. When I was very young I cruised on Big Red boat, Carnival, and Royal C but cannot remember the ships. Dont suppose you have any big red boat footage?
Thanks, Lyle -- glad you get to experience the older ships via videos like these. I have lots of footage of BIG RED BOAT (OCEANIC) and some of ATLANTIC but more of the latter as MELODY for MSC. I will definitely do OCEANIC at some point as she was one ot the most important and successful cruise ships of all time. :)
@@midshipcinema Great, looking forward to it.
Peter, this made me soooo happy to watch. I've been wanting to see the old RCCL interiors for a long time; I have the SONG TO SOVEREIGN book. My first ship was SONG when I was 11! 50 years ago. Then NORDIC PRINCE and SUN VIKING. I still have photos and stuff from the SONG and SUN if you ever want to use them! Thank you again. It truly made me smile. Mike B. You can message me since we are already FB friends.
Thanks so much, Mike! It might be a while before I get to SONG and NORDIC but I really appreciate the offer of images. In the meantime, so glad you enjoyed this SUN V tribute. :)
Fascinating as always! I've never been able find footage like you seem to always have. This really brings the ship back to life. It was sad watching the drama unfold prior to scrapping as it did seem to be in still very good condition all things considered. Another documentary extremely well done. Thank you for sharing with the world......and making me wish I had started cruising 25 years earlier! (And for Royal Caribbean, I would definitely go with the Sovereign Class)
Aww, thanks so much. I was running around all these ships with three cameras, one for print, one for slides and one for video for decades. No one understood why I was doing video but I'm so happy I did, even though my technique wasn't always so good. I've got a thousand hours of footage of these classics, so there will be much more here if the views warrant it. Thanks again. :)
We loved the Sun Viking. Cruised on her 3 or 4 times including on one of her last cruises in the far east.
Our family sailed on The Sun Viking to Alaska in 1991
What happened to the SS Norway
What a treat from my childhood. I barely remembered her but this video brought it ALL back. I remember Pier 7, Port of Miami. Funny, I remember her being SO BIG, yet seeing the video, it was actually quite small, especially compared to todays behemoths. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS 🙏🏼🤙🏼😎🇺🇸
Thank you so much for watching. So happy it brought back those memories. In her early days, she was considered large, or at least medium sized. :)
I don't understand them taking someone's personal property
I tend to think something nefarious is going on when there is no communication or transparency. But it's California!
My first three cruises were on the Carnival Carnivale when I was 6, 7 and 9, then the Big Red Boat, Atlantic when I was 10 all with my grandparents. After that it has been all modern cruise ships with the oldest being the Carnival Freedom when I had a family of my own. I recently cruised on the new Celebration and actually remembered the engine telegraph and doors from the Carnivale. Thank You Peter, I know you had a valiant effort preserving many items. I enjoy the looks of the older ships but do like the modern amenities of the newer ones. However, I do not like the crowds of people that come with the newer mega ships. I have a family, and we must cruise when school is out during the busy times and our last trip on Wonder of the Seas was more about people pushing and shoving and waiting in long lines for bread then another line for drinks, then another long line for dessert...ect. Even my kids agree a smaller ship would be nicer even if it did not have zip lines and ice skating, which was by the way, at capacity when we tried. I really enjoyed all of your decked videos especially the original Mardi Gras and look forward to others.
Thank you, Michael. Very kind of you to post and I'm so happy that you enjoyed the CARNIVAL CELEBRATION's Golden Jubilee. They really don't do much to promote it and I've had friends who sailed in the ship and never knew it was there. I'm definitely a small ship cruiser these days as the lines and some of the unruly people on the big ships are a turn off but I get the appeal for those seeking activities and bells and whistles.
Wonderful coverage Peter! I remember climbing up the staircase into the Crown Lounge at St Thomas in 1975. I thought it was the best thing in the whole world -- even beyond the Space Needle!
It was such a cool fixture back in the day, Grant! My first time visiting SONG OF NORWAY was during her call at St. Thomas in 1980 when you could just walk on board. I remember thinking how modern and futuristic she seemed.
Actually, it was SON I boarded while on vacation. I applied for an assistant bartender job, was taken up to the Crown for a mixology test and then 'hired.' But, when I returned the next morning was told that only Miami could place new hires. But it was all worth it for that short time behind the bar up in the Crown. Something I can never forget.
Peter, I can still remember a story line from the newspaper comic strip "Brenda Starr" in the 1970's. The story line that went on for a while and had Brenda aboard a cruise ship and I recall a panel in the Sunday Chicago Tribune that showed one of the Royal Carribean trio with its Viking Crown lounge on the funnel. As the story progressed the ship was sinking and on a later Sunday there was a BIG color panel that showed a detailed view from the port side of the liner sinking by the bow and the Viking Crown practically in the center of the picture. I have a hunch that Royal Carribean did not appreciate that kind of publicity even if the ship name and company logo were absent!
Oh wow! I had no idea. How funny, not for RCCL, of course, but sinking ships can be very good for overall business as the TITANIC movie proved.
Fantastic production hitting so many wonderfully memorable high lites from a lost but significant era of cruising history. I never got to sail on Sun Viking but she was always my favorite of the original RCCL sisters, so I totally agree with the assertion that she was and still is, the best looking of any RCCL/RCI ship ever. She had a lot of that '70s Scandinavian flavor I miss from growing up in Los Angeles during that time. It was the preferred style of "modern" Angelenos and my own parents were big proponents of the look. I got to honeymoon on Nordic Prince (NYC-Bermuda) and this ship's tour was very reminiscent of that sister, so this video is a fantastic look into the simplicity and casual atmosphere the RCCL fleet offered in that day. Very well produced and edited. I was rapt for the whole show. Thanks for this little "vacation" from my workday Peter!
Thanks so much. I really appreciate your taking the time to post and for your very kind words about the video. :)
Does anyone here find it super odd that nobody has ever gotten the whole story of WHO bought the ship from Chris? Unless there was some kind of NDA involved, I'm not sure why we haven't heard. I'm not familiar with California laws, but I doubt registration info is public, but still, with this much public interest in the ship, its very, VERY odd that nobody seems to know who bought the ship, when it was purchased, etc. Has anyone even asked Chris? Also, why has nobody disclosed what the actual cause of the sinking was. Looking at the multitude of similar sinkings, this kind of basic information always comes out. Especially when the government is involved as much as it has been. I do think Peter is right to suspect we aren't being told the whole truth about things. There's clearly a whole of of moving parts to this situation, which is why its all the more strange that there is so little in the way of details.
I wondered if I’d ever hear about this ship again. Thank you for your updates. The news about its sinking came as a huge shock, especially after all the hard work put into its restoration, including your contributions with the beautiful retro art pieces.
The closest I’ll achieve of being able to board one of these great fine-lined trailblazers of the cruise industry. Though I believe one or even a few are out there. I know one was part of a Greek cruise line still running even after the pandemic. Amazing how long these OGs last. So I suppose there’s still a chance! The Sovereign Class are my faves. Viewed and filmed the Monarch many times in Los Angeles, but never got the privilege of sailing aboard. Thank you for the immersive experience. I might as well have been aboard. Now, don’t get me wrong. I love some of the modern cruise ships. But! The wrap around promenade is an absolute must that we demand they bring back.
I have always wanted to see her interiors when she was with RCCL, this is such a great video. The Viking Serenade had the exact same dining room chairs on both of my sailing in her in '96 and'97. Thank you SO very much for this video Peter.
Thank you, Geoff! Yes, I think those chairs defined that Royal Caribbean era.
After 42 years on the planet I Just happen to come across this Ship today, while watching and researching Ships because of The Rig Season 2. I had no idea that there were ships that could carry that amount of Mass let alone move Rigs!!! Mind Litterly Blown 🤯. After having cancer x2, I look daily at what others have achieved and the amazing feats humans have done while being on this planet a floating rock in space still keeps surprising me each day!! This ship was a masterpiece in history! Also note the Dockwise Vanguard!! Thank you for the really useful video and capturing history! 🙌🏼🙏🏼
Peter, hey, thank you for the videos about Aurora! Do you perhaps have any information on the documentary about Chris Wilson and Aurora that you have mentioned in your videos? When will the documentary be released? On a separate note, I think that Chris Wilson is an absolute legend and a Hall of Famer! What he did trying to save the ship is absolutely crazy and amazing. You have to be unordinary and have passion to pull something like this off. I hope to see him reemerging from this disappointment and returning in the spotlight with new projects!
Thank you. The story seems to still be unfolding, so the producers are continuing to capture footage and are still in production. Not sure when they plan for it to be released. :)
I'm personally torn between the Song of Norway and Sovereign Class of ships, but for the Sovereign Class, I think they were at their best in terms of appearance when they were painted in Pullmantur's last livery.
I agree that the Pullmantur livery was very flattering to the SOVEREIGN and MONARCH. They were quite striking and well proportioned with great bows and those NORMANDIE sterns. Too bad designers can't make the extra effort these days to give ships a sense of external style.
@@midshipcinema I don't think it's true that there aren't designers that don't go out of their way to create ships with good proportions. I think Disney Cruises is the only one that still designs pretty ships by today's standards, but I do wish they never designed the front of the superstructures of their ships since the Disney Dream the way they did. Magic and Wonder just look better head on while the others look generic.
Thanks for the memories. I'm glad Viking Serenade was included. One of my first cruises was on the Serenade. Now, it's been strictly the QM2. A big ship without masses of people.
Nice. And thank you for putting up with my send off on the old VIKING SERENADE. She was actually a very important ship in West Coast cruising. :)
All information I never knew and is absolutely captivating. Thank you.
Aww, thanks so much! It is so nice when people actually care about the history and content of these video tributes. :)
My parents cruised on the Song of Norway, I still have all the menus that my father kept.
Very cool! She was a big deal in her heyday. :)
