China's Rust Belt: An Industrial Past And The Challenges Ahead | CNA Correspondent | Dongbei

  • China's northeast was once hailed by Mao Zedong as the country's eldest son, as it's where industrialisation first began in the country in the 1950s. But today, it's become the country's rust belt. From a rapidly ageing population to a shrinking work force due to falling birth rates, the region can be seen as a microcosm of the challenges facing China. CNA Correspondent finds out what's the road ahead for this once-booming region, as the Communist Party of China gears up to mark its 100th anniversary in July.

Though I appreciate the more objective attempt of reporting, by simply accurately relay what the locals think. However, there can be more improvements done, for example interviewing Chinese experts on Why the North East is a so called "Rust belt"
The more convincing explanation is that, the North East's economy relied on Heavy Industries, like making Steel, manufacturing machinery. Before the reform and opening up, China's economic supply chain is totally independent, which means international competition from German or Japanese heavy industries is insulated.
But once the reform and opening up process begun, China's economy is supplanted onto the wider global economy. China's state of development in the 1990s meant it is only competitive in light industries. Heavy industry at the time didn't have much competitive advantage compared to Germany and Japan.
This competition caused the decline of industries. Though in saying that, The North East has several very important key industries, a sizable percentage of Chinese military aircrafts are designed and produced in the region, along side advanced jet engine design and production, Ship building industry of the region makes up a sizable chunk of China's huge ship building industry as well.
The region needs time to recover from the impact of foreign competition, as China continues to move up the economic value chain, more and more advanced machinery will be in high demand, and the old industrial base sprit will sure contribute to the rebirth of the North East, in fact some are already happening, Siasun is one of the largest robotic companies in China is founded and based in the North East, and is providing industrial robots to many industries in China and around the world.

The thing is that China isn't exactly expanding its heavy industry. At least for now, the Chinese economy seems to head more towards software, light industry, and service industry. So I doubt that if the northeast can get a rebirth from heavy industry alone

    • @obsidianstatue
      @obsidianstatue 3 роки тому +2

@@kevintang5473 What are you talking about? Heavy industry is extremely important for China.
As China is starting to dominate the EV market, there will be much more demand for heavy industry products.
China is also the largest and most advanced ship building nation, and is creating an indigenous commercial aerospace industry, as well as China's need for industrial robots.
These industries all requires machine tools and other machinery to keep it going too.
These are all part of the heavy industry, and China has one of the most comprehensive heavy industry market in the world.

But Singapore seems not to have these issues? At least not as serious as in China. Also, Singapore is small and rich, so it can attract many young people to immigrate to Singapore from all Asian countries. China can't do the same.

The Northeast is the seat of Manchukuo. During the 15 years of Japanese colonization, the Northeast has become the most developed region in Northeast Asia. However, after China's reform and development, the Northeast has inevitably fallen behind. Many people blame this status quo on Political corruption, and a few people even miss the Manchukuo period.

The aging of the population is indeed a problem that China is facing. It is not only a problem in China, but many Western countries are already aging societies. However, Chinese culture pays special attention to family and filial piety culture, so supporting the elderly has become a concern for people. Unlike Western culture, many elderly people live and live separately from their children. However, China has put forward many plans for the aging population, which I believe can effectively deal with this problem.

@@oceanwave4502 No one has to die. An aging society will require a new method of resource distribution. With technology being what it is and will be, labor shortage will not be an issue, but increased profits from lower labor costs realized by firms will have to be redirected into pensions to relieve the pressure of providing for the elderly from the working generations. Governments are going to have to increase their part in supporting retirees and their going to have to do that through corporate taxation. What can get in the way is corporate flight to more liberal countries that care more about attracting business than they do about providing for people.
As for the racial conflicts being stoked up by white nationalists and their enablers in the west, while they are horrendous and unconscionable, they're not really that much of a threat to our existence, merely a stain on our humanity.

The aging population trend is not endemic to China. Even in US, due to an aging population (Boomers), there are claims that social security will be depleted by 2035. In any case, seems like we are at pivotal point in society to challenge the concept of retirement.A lot of the individuals interviewed on this show seem sound of body and mind and still vigorous - why have an artificial age limit for retirement? As long as you are capable of working and want to do so - what is the point of retirement? Seems totally boring to sit around the house all day. Also - work comes in so many forms now and people have multiple careers over a lifetime - it doesn't have to be a 9-5 office job. There are so many ways to be a productive member of society. Hey given the control the Chinese government has over its people, they could more easily than other countries institute workforce reforms to better optimize their manpower resource.

What happened in NE CHINA rust belt is very similar to the US rustbelt and the disappearing small towns of America. In 1900, % of rural population numbered 60% but now only 18% are rural Americans. As a result most small town America is either dying or gone. As for the US rust belt, whole communities in the North West hollowed out when manufacturing moved outside of the US. What is left are abandoned factories and buildings and mass unemployment. US now has 82% urban dwellers but in the midst of it, 65% lived paycheck to paycheck, 14% lived under poverty and around 600,000 American are homeless with "tent city" dotting the urban landscape.
Let's hope China learns from the US and be able to revive China's NE region in parity with other bustling areas of China.
