Back in 1992 Francis Fukuyama, an American economist published a book with the very humble title 'The End of History ...', in which he argued that Western Civilization had been so successful that every country in the world had to adopt Western ideas and beliefs if they wished to be prosperous. In fact, in the future all countries were going to be Westernized.
In effect, history was over and there was nothing left to write about - the West was victorious and the rest had been annihilated.
This is how the West went to sleep and meanwhile on the other side of the ocean, a giant woke up. History did not end but the history of Western domination may very soon come to an end.

    • @rustyrust804
      @rustyrust804 5 років тому +57

don't know if fukuyama will be proven but there is nothing wrong in learning ideas from west. that's what westerners are good at: looking for ideas, opportunities and advantage. remember chinese invented gunpowder, india contributed important concepts in mathematics among many other things. Westerners combined them improvised to overpower and plunder china and india among others. Its not a statement of hatred but objective truth. Those that do not learn from others and improvise are doomed. Want to prevent others from rising? Dont let them learn from you. For example some developed countries now accuse china of ip theft on moral arguements but their true fear is that china is learning from them and may rise as a potential rival

Yes, Mao disastrous policy caused millions of death in China, but think for a while. The Nationalists had escaped with all the wealth , elites , human capital to Taiwan. US also embargoed China in 1950. That means China had zero foreign capital , lack of economic experts to run the economy well . Only 600 +million poor peasants to support her.The only help came from USSR which severed ties and stopped all aid to China in 1960 due to ideological differences. Thus, Mao had to divert the bulk of the ctries resources to the military industrial complex because USSR ,Taiwan would invade China anytime during those era. Moreover , China heavy military industry was already in progress and could not be given up even though USSR experts or technicians have all left. Thus, light industries such as consumers goods and others had to be sacrificed . Hundred of millions were jobless . People communes were one way to solve this problem.Cultural revolution is another way used by Mao to purge certain party members as well as to drive all these youths away from cities to rural areas to work for the peasants so that social upheavals will not occur in the cities.

@Gen Info Simmer down. Hong Kong is experiencing an identity crisis, but Hong Kong is undeniably China and in the long run its residents will be fine Chinese citizens. What's going on now is uncomfortable for everyone, but it will pass. The confused and spoiled children who make up the bulk of the marchers will grow up and contribute to society. There's no need to defame them now and jeopardize their futures.

    • @alanfriesen9837
      @alanfriesen9837 5 років тому

@Gen Info I think I misunderstood your original statement. I thought you were referring to all the people of Hong Kong. But on second reading I think you were only referring to the demonstrators. Even so, while the demonstrators partaking in violence, vandalism and assault are engaged in what is and should be considered criminal behavior, they're still not vermin. Those that are merely adding their enthusiasm to what is destined to be a failed movement, while dangerous in their naivety to themselves and others, are nonetheless completely human.
It's never good to dehumanize people, even those you find contemptible. Those who make mistakes, even grave ones, in their youths can be rehabilitated, but that does require a certain degree of respect.
I'm very much saddened by what's going on in Hong Kong, and not just because it's violent and unseemly. The "One-Party, Two-Systems" arrangement was supposed to display an alternative for Taiwan to reunite without a military invasion. I think these protesters have just destroyed that option. Because of this, at least in part, the reunification is likely to be bloody with terrible casualties on both sides. Hong Kong can be suppressed in a few days at most, probably with casualties in the low thousands. That's still terrible, but the impending conflict thirty years from now….

@Gen Info American here. In the United States we grow up following a doctrine that is worshipful of democracy and, to a slightly lesser extant, liberal economics. Despite our political differences, some of which are quite profound, it's rare to find an American who doesn't believe in the fundamental supremacy of these two concepts. We're told from the beginning that non-democratic governments are inherently oppressive and therefore hated by the people that live under them. Most Americans think that anyone suggesting otherwise is either being forced to say something they don't believe, or is corrupted and speciously defending a system that benefits them at the expense of normal people.
Americans also believe that people would rather have freedom and voting privileges than food, decent health services or secure streets. We're not hypocritical in this; most of us genuinely believe this. And we don't understand it when someone else doesn't.
We've done some bad things internationally (I'm not going to get into our domestic shortcomings here), but for what it's worth, we've always tried, at least since World War II, to do good. We're deep-rooted idealists. We believe our system is the best for everyone and we want everyone to enjoy the benefits of it. Unlike the British imperialists before us, we believe that no one is ethnically or culturally incompatible with our type of system. In that one respect, we're enlightened. We have within our country, people from all over the world and they all have proven themselves worthy of participating in our democracy as American citizens.
Personally, I think we're a little stuck on ourselves. Our system is pretty good for us, and anyone who wants to be part of America and participate should be welcome. But our view of democracy borders on religious and unwillingness to accept other options which may be working for other countries and other people is harmful, especially considering that we're willing to foment chaos and break up countries in the hope that out of the wreckage a democracy will emerge. It's not that we're fundamentally bad, but rather that our cost-benefit analysis abilities are badly corrupted by our idealism.
I hope that over time we become more tolerant of governments that have elected to serve their people through a different mechanism, but I'm not holding my breath.
Sorry about the novel, but I want you to understand that, misguided as we may be, we're not evil. And hopefully with a resurgent China that, unlike our former Soviet adversaries, isn't trying to religiously push their political ideology on the rest of the world, we can learn to tolerate and work together with other powerful empires, democratic or not, for a better and more stable and prosperous world for everyone.

@Gen Info Thank you for the wonderful compliment; I'm not sure I'm entirely deserving. And thank you for visiting my country. I used to live in the Twin Cities up at the northern end of the Mississippi. You're right, it's a lovely river.
I looked at the videos you linked to. I'd already seen the one with the elderly lady. I very much wonder what the true breakdown is between Hong Kong residents that really want separation, those that have mixed feelings who are disturbed by the violence of the demonstrators but are also upset with the actions of the police and government and Beijing's influence on them, and those who believe wholeheartedly that the demonstrators are a bunch of fools playing a dangerous game and jeopardizing the safety and prosperity of everyone in the city. The demonstrations are huge and the sheer percentage of the city's population that turns out for them can't be casually blown off. But from here it looks like the demonstrators are overwhelmingly in their teens and twenties which makes me wonder if this isn't driven more by excitement and social belonging than by rational thought. I think this also has a lot to do with the incidences of violence and vandalism as young participants release their inhibitions in this semi-anonymous theater disregarding the potential consequences or even the morality of such actions. That being said though, I don't know that the entire movement should be viewed as violent and destructive. When you have up to two million people gathering in a relatively small space to express anger at actions of authorities even a tiny percentage of violent activists can cause a lot of damage. The same can be said regarding injuries caused by the police, who I think have shown remarkable restraint in reacting to such large crowds of demonstrators over such a long time subject to projectile and incendiary attacks. I'm frankly amazed that the casualty rate isn't much more severe than what I've heard it to be, and I'm not a defender of police in general.
As far as banner slogans like "freedom", "democracy", "universal suffrage", and the like, I know that these are terms aimed at those of us in the West-because they work. I personally think freedom is an extremely nebulous term and most often one persons freedom is purchased with another's obligations. Democracy is of course our political religion and the stated purpose of our existence over here. Real democracy rarely survives a successful revolution and never survives a failed one. Nevertheless, it strokes our collective ego and stokes our collective passion. I'm never quite sure how serious demonstrators outside the West are when invoking these terms. Are they cynical and just saying what they have to to get Western support, or just naive, genuinely believing in the beautiful ideas embedded in these concepts without understanding either the likelihood or the consequences of their success? Of course, I can say all of that from the comfort of a relatively free and functional democracy that I both love and regularly take for granted.
My views also have to be taken with the understanding that I'm a pretty hard-core sinophile and have been as long as I can remember. I very much want to see the total reunification of China both because I think it's what China is and should be destined to be and also because I want what I see as the most likely flashpoint between China and the United States (Taiwan) to go away. These demonstrations are, in my view, a threat to that eventuality which puts me politically at odds with the marchers. Because of these obvious biases I try very hard to imagine the legitimate concerns of the opposing side. I'm not sure I'm always successful, but one thing I refuse to do is to view those I disagree with as unworthy of my respect and consideration.
My father once visited Singapore on a business trip. He said the city was beautiful and extremely well-functioning. He brought back a memoir of Lee Kuan-Yew which I read some years ago. Lee was a brilliant leader who I sincerely admire, though while it's hard to argue with the phenomenal success of your city, I was not comfortable with the separatist motivation that established it's independence from Malaysia. Please don't take that personally, I have equally uneasy feelings about our break from England. I do think that the Singaporean Mediacorp coverage of Hong Kong is the most balanced I've seen and I very much appreciate that. I do hope to visit your beautiful city one day and I hope that you and your fellow Singaporeans continue to thrive so.
      Thanks Again,
      Alan

After centuries of Western domination and humiliation at Western imperialists, we now have an Asian super power on the global stage. This heralds the beginning of the return of Asia, the world shifting back to its natural state of things before the industrial revolution. Asia got left behind because China got too complacent after 2 centuries of Qing rule and various Indian kingdoms warring at each other. Now China has risen, India is gaining momentum and putting itself back together. Now for the Asia as a whole to come together, set aside our differences, see the bigger picture and march towards co prosperity. Never again we will fall to divide and conquer by outsiders.

The dynasties of China's thousands of years of unified Confucian culture have only changed in accordance with the historical trend and changed from the empires of Spain, Portugal, France, and the United Kingdom to the United States. Nice documentary.
This help me understand China better.
I’m from Malaysia. China has traded with Malaysia for 2000 years. In those years, they had been the world’s biggest powers many times. Never once they sent troops to take our land. Admiral Zheng He came to Malacca five times, in gigantic fleets, and a flagship eight times the size of Christopher Columbus’ flagship, Santa Maria. He could have seized Malacca easily, but he did not. In 1511, the Portuguese came. In 1642, the Dutch came. In the 18th century the British came. We were colonised by each, one after another.
When China wanted spices from India, they traded with the Indians. When they wanted gems, they traded with the Persian. They didn’t take lands. The only time China expanded beyond their current borders was in Yuan Dynasty, when Genghis and his descendants Ogedei Khan, Guyuk Khan & Kublai Khan concurred China, Mid Asia and Eastern Europe. But Yuan Dynasty, although being based in China, was a part of the Mongolian Empire.
Then came the Century of Humiliation. Britain smuggled opium into China to dope the population, a strategy to turn the trade deficit around, after the British could not find enough silver to pay the Qing Dynasty in their tea and porcelain trades. After the opium warehouses were burned down and ports were closed by the Chinese in ordered to curb opium, the British started the Opium War I, which China lost. Hong Kong was forced to be surrendered to the British in a peace talk (Nanjing Treaty). The British owned 90% of the opium market in China, during that time, Queen Victory was the world’s biggest drug baron. The remaining 10% was owned by American merchants from Boston. Many of Boston’s institutions were built with profit from opium.
After 12 years of Nanjing Treaty, the West started getting really really greedy. The British wanted the Qing government:
    1. To open the borders of China to allow goods coming in and out freely, and tax free.
    2. Make opium legal in China.
Insane requests, Qing government said no. The British and French, with supports from the US and Russia from behind, started Opium War II with China, which again, China lost. The Anglo-French military raided the Summer Palace, and threatened to burn down the Imperial Palace, the Qing government was forced to pay with ports, free business zones, 300,000 kilograms of silver and Kowloon was taken. Since then, China’s resources flew out freely through these business zones and ports. In the subsequent amendment to the treaties, Chinese people were sold overseas to serve as labor.
In 1900, China suffered attacks by the 8-National Alliance(Japan, Russia, Britain, France, USA, Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary). Innocent Chinese civilians in Peking (Beijing now) were murdered, buildings were destroyed & women were raped. The Imperial Palace was raided, and treasures ended up in museums like the British Museum in London and the Louvre in Paris.
In late 1930s China was occupied by the Japanese in WWII. Millions of Chinese died during the occupancy. 300,000 Chinese died in Nanjing Massacre alone.
Mao brought China together again from the shambles. There were peace and unity for some time. But Mao’s later reign saw sufferings and deaths from famine and power struggles.
Then came Deng Xiao Ping and his infamous “black-cat and white-cat” story. His preference in pragmatism than ideologies has transformed China. This thinking allowed China to evolve all the time to adapt to the actual needs in the country, instead of rigidly bounded to ideologies. It also signified the death of Communism in actually practice in China. The current Socialism+Meritocracy+Market Economy model fits the Chinese like gloves, and it propels the uprise of China. Singapore has a similar model, and has been arguably more successful than Hong Kong, because Hong Kong being gateway to China, was riding on the economic boom in China, while Singapore had no one to gain from.
In just 30 years, the CPC have moved 800 millions of people out from poverty. The rate of growth is unprecedented in human history. They have built the biggest mobile network, by far the biggest high speed rail network in the world, and they have become a behemoth in infrastructure. They made a fishing village called Shenzhen into the world’s second largest technological centre after the Silicon Valley. They are growing into a technological power house. It has the most elaborate e-commerce and cashless payment system in the world. They have launched exploration to Mars. The Chinese are living a good life and China has become one of the safest countries in the world. The level of patriotism in the country has reached an unprecedented height.
For all of the achievements, the West has nothing good to say about it. China suffers from intense anti-China propagandas from the West. Western Media used the keyword “Communist” to instil fear and hatred towards China.
Everything China does is negatively reported.
They claimed China used slave labor in making iPhones. The truth was, Apple was the most profitable company in the world, it took most of the profit, leave some to Foxconn (a Taiwanese company) and little to the labor.
They claimed China was inhuman with one-child policy. At the same time, they accused China of polluting the earth with its huge population. The fact is the Chinese consume just 30% of energy per capita compared to the US.
They claimed China underwent ethnic cleansing in Xinjiang. The fact is China has a policy which priorities ethnic minorities. For a long time, the ethnic minorities were allowed to have two children and the majority Han only allowed one. The minorities are allowed a lower score for university intakes. There are 39,000 mosque in China, and 2100 in the US. China has about 3 times more mosque per muslim than the US.
When terrorist attacks happened in Xinjiang, China had two choices:
    1. Re-educate the Uighur extremists before they turned terrorists.
    2. Let them be, after they launch attacks and killed innocent people, bomb their homes.
China chose 1 to solve problem from the root and not to do killing. How the US solve terrorism? Fire missiles from battleships, drop bombs from the sky.
    During the pandemic,
When China took extreme measures to lockdown the people, they were accused of being inhuman.
When China recovered swiftly because of the extreme measures, they were accused of lying about the actual numbers.
When China’s cases became so low that they could provide medical support to other countries, they were accused of politically motivated.
Western Media always have reasons to bash China.
Just like any country, there are irresponsible individuals from China which do bad and dirty things, but the China government overall has done very well. But I hear this comment over and over by people from the West: I like Chinese people, but the CPC is evil. What they really want is the Chinese to change the government, because the current one is too good.
Fortunately China is not a multi-party democratic country, otherwise the opposition party in China will be supported by notorious NGOs (Non-Government Organization) of the USA, like the NED (National Endowment for Democracy), to topple the ruling party. The US and the British couldn’t crack Mainland China, so they work on Hong Kong. Of all the ex-British colonial countries, only the Hong Kongers were offered BNOs by the British. Because the UK would like the Hong Kongers to think they are British citizens, not Chinese. A divide-and-conquer strategy, which they often used in Color Revolutions around the world.
They resort to low dirty tricks like detaining Huawei’s CFO & banning Huawei. They raised a silly trade war which benefits no one. Trade deficit always exist between a developing and a developed country. USA is like a luxury car seller who ask a farmer: why am I always buying your vegetables and you haven’t bought any of my cars?
When the Chinese were making socks for the world 30 years ago, the world let it be. But when Chinese started to make high technology products, like Huawei and DJI, it caused red-alert. Because when Western and Japanese products are equal to Chinese in technologies, they could never match the Chinese in prices. First world countries want China to continue in making socks. Instead of stepping up themselves, they want to pull China down.
The recent movement by the US against China has a very important background. When Libya, Iran, and China decided to ditch the US dollar in oil trades, Gaddafi’s was killed by the US, Iran was being sanctioned by the US, and now it’s China’s turn. The US has been printing money out of nothing. The only reason why the US Dollar is still widely accepted, is because it’s the only currency which oil is allowed to be traded with. The US has an agreement with Saudi that oil must be traded in US dollar ONLY. Without the petrol-dollar status, the US dollars will sink, and America will fall. Therefore anyone trying to disobey this order will be eliminated. China will soon use a gold-backed crypto-currency, the alarms in the White House go off like mad.
China’s achievement has been by hard work. Not buy looting the world.
I have deep sympathy for China for all the suffering, but now I feel happy for them. China is not rising, they are going back to where they belong. Good luck China.

Hard to achieve with democracy. Popular leader has higher chance to win then capable leader. Asian system/traditional system only pick between capable leader vs capable leader to compete. More to selection then election. Wether to be leader of farmers regarding irrigation..leader of village etc. The control system ussualy form between eldery and young generation to discuss and set the goal to be achieve. Experienced/Capable village leader if they good then will be nominated to compete to be distric leader..capable distric leader will be nomimated to compete to be mayor and keep going up to the top leader.

great documentary, it's one of the few foreign documentaries that actually sets China within the right frame of mind, seeing the PRC as a continuation of the Chinese civilization since antiquity.
CCP's ideology even under Mao have always had elements of traditional Chinese governing philosophy, Mao is known to be favor the traditional Chinese governing philosophy of Legalism. and imperial China have always had the system that combines Legalism and Confucianism,.
Today China is the same. it has a system of Legalism and Confucianism with socialist characteristics. China will forge ahead and reform and find a system that best suits their needs, I personally believe President Xi is the right guy for that job.

It is ridiculous to portrait the Mao period as dark age when Chinese started her industrialization , produced Nuke bomb independently, sent satellite into the space. The reason western media so eager to blacken Mao is so obvious that Mao represents the true spirit of Chinese culture, fearing nothing and fighting against all the odds. Ordinary Chinese are all grateful to Chair Mao for the life he gave to this country.

Why do people want to decide what is good for China? Let her people decide what they want. A society is built from its historical and cultural traditions and any drastic change will cause upheavals which the people may not be able to cope with. As long as they do not impose their form of governance to others, they should be not reason for the rest of the world to worry about. For the outsiders, we should admire the hard work the Chinese people have undertaken to create what they have to-day. It is obvious that some powers seem unhappy that this billion plus people simply refused to accept what they deemed to be the perfect society where the poor has to remain poor if you do not have the resources to improve yourself. There is no minimum support like "let there be no poverty at $XXX income per year". Yes, if you are not prepared to struggle in the city, stay put in the rural area so that you could at least work in the farm. Such approach may seem unacceptable to some but it permits those unable to compete in the city an option in a lesser competitive scenario. Come 2030, maybe the world would see a different China!

When the economy is $1T it is comparatively easier to achieve 10% growth annually but if the economy is $14T, a 6.2% growth is indeed impressive. It is like generating the size of the Australia's economy. How many countries can achieve such a feat, CNA? Hence, it is erroneous to say that China's 6.2% growth is the slowest since 2009. Wall Street mumbo jumbo at it's best, they like to play the game that India's GDP of $2.5T has a 9-10% growth compare the PRC's at $14T at 6.5% only dummies would fall for that which is basically most North American investors !
