So Tiktok was going to be "banned" and a bunch of creators and influencers thought it would be smart to expose themselves and lies about their content using a family guy audio. Because...gotta get those last minute views and go down with the ship? Who knows.

I just deleted the app from my phone the day it went dark and I’m not looking back. That pop up message praising Trump for saving the app really rubbed me the wrong way.
Same😂
Trump saved tiktok
@@74rocktiger74Bestie no he didn’t lmao he just extended it the president doesn’t override everything

Yeah I've deleted TikTok, instagram and facebook from my phone after all these Tech CEO shenanigans. I deleted my twitter when I saw what Elon was doing to it. Honestly I don't miss any of them. I even jumped back on Tumblr and it's a lot less anxiety inducing.
Influencers being dishonest??? I've never considered such a thing!
Shock and outrage at such a video title. Amanda clearly clickbaiting. 😂
you really think people would do that? just go on the internet and tell lies?
Naw, they're all perfect angels.
Influencers? Influencing us? That word that's in their job description? Impossible.
(I always thought that word was weird. Imagine if they were called propagandizers or something. Apt, but. Creepy.)

"Wow people are so addicted to Tiktok, it's so unhealthy", I say, as I half watch the 34th 20+ minute UA-cam video today
still better than tiktok. instagram shorts are another story…
Noooo same 😂 idk why I feel like youtube “doesn’t count” when I’m absolutely addicted to it 💀

Eh! People on UA-cam are fucking talented hahahaha
You and Hank Green are so right about reclaiming our attention. I noticed at the end of last year that my attention span was dangerously low, so I had to work so much to expand it and be able to focus better. I never used TikTok, but I did use to watch a ton of Instagram reels, so I've cut down on that too because of all the weird shit Zuckerberg has been doing. All in all, I've been happier with my life since then. I can pay attention to everything I choose to listen to, I can read a lot more, and I can even engage in more analysis and retrospection by choice. Life without so much short content is better
I cut off all reels and shorts last year too. Which required me to basically stop using Instagram since it wouldn’t let me block reels. It’s definitely helped, between the shortened attention span and the deeply negative/fear mongering clips I would be fed that made me feel worse for having seen it, the separation has helped me focus on what I actually want to do. I don’t miss it at all.
@@floraidh4097Did you find a way to block shorts on UA-cam?? I hate that it opens directly to shorts half the time I open the app
I stopped using tiktok for anything but live streaming concerts because I felt that happening to me, and I hate when I'm talking to someone and they're looking at tiktok for something else.

@@ville-c4uYou’re not because you have no attention span. And I’m someone with ADHD who read all of it.
I am an Instagram scroller and what I'm most disappointed about is finding it that the comments you see are curated. So if my husband and I see the same video, we'll see different top comments. I realized I was getting so upset with how many people held horrible beliefs. Then I realized I was being rage-baited. It changed my patterns
Omg i did not know that
@moomoomilu8428 I recently saw a video about it and then tried it myself. It's so frustrating. :(

They specifically choose to show people comments that make them upset because it tends to cause more engagement than comments that you like. You stay on the app longer if you're arguing than if you agree with something. I deleted all my social media except YT when I realized this

You really think people would tell lies on the internet? 😮
Not me though, I'm honest about myself, good or bad, I hate lying I don't see the point in it most of the time, maintaining the lie is more effort than it's worth
@@justheretocommentokdontwan685 I'm the same way. I hate lying and see no reason for it. But I have sadly learned that what we are shown on the internet is curated and a lot of the most succesful influencers lie because it benefits their levels of success. I don't think most people are lying , but when it comes to the internet, lying is currency.
You wrote 99% wrong 😂
I just can’t use tiktok anymore after the ceo sold out to Trump. It pissed me off so badly! Those messages were Trump propaganda. Trump is the one who started the TikTok ban in 2020! I don’t use tiktok anymore and I’m not using any meta app anymore either. I’m petty like that. Hank Green is 100% right.
Tiktok is primarily propaganda 😂 There was SO much uninformed political content from day 1. People forget that just because you generally agree with the political propaganda you're seeing, that doesn't mean it isn't propaganda lol
??? Lol are same 3 years back? Definitely not, as time passes our mindset and opinions change. We are just hypocrites.
TikTok was involved in shady shit even before they sold out

I love Hank Green and I 100% agree. I’m Jamaican so the ban never affected me but it was so scary seeing Americans online saying they didn’t know what to do with themselves. Ummm hello? There are so many hobbies in the world that don’t need you looking a screen. Read a book, listen to a podcast, draw, paint, bake etc. We really have to take our attention back.
The slightly scary thing about it is there's no way for social media people to convince people to get off social media, we just consume it passively as someone else's experience on our behalf - the amount of people who needed this ban to realise the truth of what you're saying is not an accident
The ones I saw where when they just spilled tea on family, friends group, crimes, getting people fired etc.
The one that my jaw was on the floor was "there's a reason my son has blonde hair and not brunette like me or my husband."
Like, your family ALSO can have tiktok.
I would assume for something like that that it was already known…or maybe people are really that stupid
@@alliew31 idk who's being referenced here, but brunette folk have blond kids all the time, just takes both having the recessive gene and a roll of the dice to have it happen. 🤷♀
I'll never forget how pathetic TikTok looked with their little performative error message, begging "oh trump! oh trump! save us!"
Just the rich helping the rich, and dragging the rest of us along
9:13 Oh, I saw the exercise one that clip you have is referring to. It's actually so normal. The "secret" is that she's didn't do all 10, 20, etc reps when filming tiktoks explaining the workouts. She'd only do the demonstration reps for the video-- it's almost like she was filming a video explaining different types of exercise or something.
Some of the secrets were crazy but that one felt like such a huge overreaction to me? What??? The 40 second tiktok explaining a workout was not in fact a whole hour long exercise session cut down?? Instead it's her specifically filming and explaining movements and not just a camera pointed at her while she does her daily exercise which includes explaining everything she's doing to an empty room??
Yeah, I think this one got odd reactions. It's not like she was posting hour long "workout with me!" videos where she was editing herself doing more reps than she was.
She also didn't say she didn't do them at all, she just didn't film her actual workouts. But those same workouts she was saying for people to do she *did* actually do, just in her own time. It's just another case of people getting angry and then not wanting to actually hear the context lol
Context is out of equation in the internet age.
What’s crazy about revealing a lie as a social media influencer is like… there’s other platforms.. they could’ve just moved to instagram or facebook or twitter I know that might suck but… it didn’t have to be the end of their social media career.. I can’t believe they only think in the now! 🙄😑
No because I was thinking that too! They could have made a post telling their followers to see their content on other platforms!
First thing I thought when I heard about those last-minute confessions
No one is reading all of that
@@ville-c4u uh lol dude its barely a paragraph, you dyslexic or something?
It just doesn’t work. It’s very difficult to move an audience.
I’m showing my kids all the traumatizing psas I had to watch about the internet in the 90s and 00s so they understand that it’s all a lie and to trust no one. And, ya know, media literacy
Honestly this is a good idea, I feel like we should bring back those psas and modernize them for today's youth coming into the online world. When the internet was new, people were scared of it. Now that it's not new anymore, people aren't scared anymore either, but they have even more reasons they should be scared of it today than they did 25+ years ago. You never see those kind of public warnings about the online world anymore, even though it's more problematic than ever
I was thinking of doing that and this convinced me.
@@madokami03 I wish we would get modern PSAs but social media is a billion dollar industry and has a death grip on our political system, so I highly doubt it'll happen. I think a good way to make our own modernized information is to show our kids all the stories of how social media has hurt people. Like 5 minute crafts causing mass injuries, those girls murdering a friend cause of slenderman, reddit and the Boston bombing, influencer diet trends being dangerous to health, antivax shit causing a resurgence of previously eradicated illnesses and making people feed their kids bleach, doxxing, swatting, gamergate, kiwifarms, 4chan, many many famous streamers and youtubers grooming children, influencers like Matt Walsh caused his fans to bomb threat hospitals and attack vulnerable people, and how many right wing youtubers were instrumental in the right wing coup of our democracy.
And critical thinking! It seems to be a dying art

My main complaint is that my Instagram is now completely TikTok-ified. It doesn't even matter who I follow anymore because my feed will be 98% random rage bait of people screaming for my attention in the first 2 seconds. I was never on TikTok and that was 100% intentional. I watch UA-camrs cover TikTok happenings for a reason.
Same

SAMEEEE. NEVER USED TIKTOK AND NEVER WOULD. :)
I found all the creators I didn’t want to lose (political, bipoc, LGBTQIA+) and deleted the app that Friday. My sleep has been beautiful and I have read 7 books this year so far.
Hell yeah, that's like, a book a week so far!
@ Yeah, it feels like when I was little kid and was going through books like potato chips. It helps that Spotify and Apple have a lot of overlap with the freebies.
Same here! I recently invested in an E-reader too. Best decision ever!
i've been saying consuming content just to BE MAD is such a waste of energy. People act like their phones and social media sites HAVE to be obeyed and paid attention to. they don't.
After the TikTok ban (and comeback?) I got the biggest ick with Tiktok and I am honestly glad that I did because I have been (a little) more intentional with the things I consume. I still watch too much youtube, but I have been reading so many more books, watching movies, going outside and doing things not on a screen, starting my own podcast. Like I have been the most producive I have ever been this month than I was last year in general, and it really did ramp up after the Tiktok ban and just everything with the presidency.
If you're American, check out A People's History of the United States; Women Race, & Class; Inventing Reality; and Manufacturing Consent. bro the ONE time i watch youtube on the living room TV.. THIS is your sponsor. lmao
Oh no 😂😂😂
8:53 tbh my guess is just some plain uscentrism. They didn’t even think about or consider that just because the app goes dark for Americans, that doesn’t mean no-one will be able to see their TikToks. Just straight up forgot the rest of the world exists
(And also part of it is the confusion and miscommunication about what was going to happen to their accounts, I’d bet)
Honestly yeah I agree. I think the people who tanked their potential social media careers outside of TikTok were being stupid and didn’t even think about that
Yeah was thinking that what blocks someone from another country to just download the video and post on youtube
“Telling people, ‘are you stupid?’ - that’s one of my resolutions this year.” 🤣
Excellent, here for it, I’m sure that will be just as much fun as all your other videos!
I love the British version- "are you dumb or stupid?"
It’s divisive rhetoric and genuinely hateful to just insult someone for not agreeing with you. I think that line of thinking is what’s wrong with the world. I wish people would continue to view everyone as human even if they disagree with you. Instead we dehumanize and mock those who think differently. We should be curious. Ask people why they believe what they believe. When I’ve done that I’ve noticed that the other person is working off a different set of facts so they naturally come to a different conclusion. That doesn’t make them stupid.
@ There’s a difference between “I like this drink and you don’t” and “You’re telling me you didn’t want to go back out to find more kindling so you just dumped a can of gasoline into your fireplace? And that’s why your chimney flattened my car parked next door? AND you’re refusing to go to the hospital?”
I will say, as an old: assume anything you post online will be there forever and shared with the worst possible people. Lots of data does get lost everyday but it'll be the things you DON'T want shared that will still be circulating 20 years later. Also, if you're American, be really careful what you share online esp tied to your irl name OR face given our current political climate.
Honestly noone should ever use their legal name or other info on social media. Give them incorrect data, baby!

the worst part is everyone will just forget and everything will go back to normal. those fitness influencers admitting they have BBLs? they'll go right back to making just as much money off their supplements and their courses in a month. people want their idols more than they want truth.
Lol why does that matter anyways? That's literally the biggest non issue
Literally every single teacher I’ve had since middle school told us to “not believe everything you see online.” And then people are shocked to find out that all these people are liars 😂
I’ve never been on TikTok before. That app has never touched my phone, and now I don’t think it ever will. Love that people are spilling their secrets, though. That’s hilarious and short-sighted.
I always thought that absurdity was part of the gimmick of restock channels. I'm shocked by how many people thought that they were totally organic.
I really appreciate that you actually made a commentary video about this, all the other creators I saw covering this were largely just reacting to the influencers' tiktok videos rather than providing their commentary
The ice restock girl confirmed she wasn't just throwing the ice away she was making it for her mom/friends to use so I really feel like that one got blown out of proportion by everyone who reacted to it. Like she personally doesn't like using fancy ice she just likes making it for other people.
Chicken lady is also a mother baby/labor and delivery nurse and offers wonderful advice to patients!
A thing that stood out to me (as a non-american) were the sheer amount of people admitting that TikTok was their ONLY source for news?? Like a platform notorious for the extremely curated algorithms and the easy spread of misinformation and rumours is the SOLE PLACE you get your news from?! That's a you problem, and not on a platform being banned.
Also NikkiTutorials being all upset over the ban, despite not being in a country that got banned, because her account was American for revenue for some reason really rubbed me the wrong way. Obviously this is her career, and the creator fund is only available in the U.S., but gurl only seemed to be upset about losing a stream of revenue

I do think growing up in my era of watching UA-cam as a young teen rather than TikTok has given me more skills in INTENTIONAL content seeking if that makes sense? I hate how short form feeds are designed to do just that: FEED. And they dumb down your role as a human to just: CONSUME. When I make conscious choices to go search for videos or creators and curate what I watch specifically it usually means I have a better grasp on the topics they talk about, and find higher value in the entertainment because instead of just being fed, you’ve actually gone to forage.
Another thing, the president can't just undo a law passed by Congress and especially not one upheld by the Supreme Court. That's not how that works. So the whole, I'm just going to undo the process I started, is a whole freaking lie.
My favorite ones were the surgeons saying they weren't really scrubbing in for real while they were filming, that they are washing their hands for the footage, and actually scrubbing in for surgeries without their phones.
This trend made me think that people need diaries.
“Retake your attention” has been my goal post TikTok ban. There’s way too much content around and I can just put on some music in the background while painting or cooking or working on my dnd campaign instead of sitting and scrolling. Honestly, every time I forget my phone at home when going to the store does actually take a weight off my back
6:41 i feel like the admitting a relationship was fake is kinda crazy thooo
For a regular person yes. Very regular social media/influencer behavior tho lmaoooo.
It truly astounds me that a lot of them actually thought the information they told wouldn’t spread to other platforms.
Especially considering that the app only went down in the US and nowhere was it ever said that US profiles would be deleted.
“You think someone would do that? Spread lies on the internet?”
I hate the chicken as cats lady went with such a terrible "secret". Such a wasted opportunity to make a good deadpan joke! "I don’t have indoor cats. I've always known I don't have indoor cats. They're clearly bunnies that dress like cats to fool me."
When you said “I only eat kale chips” you sounded exactly like the parts in severance when they get told what their outie likes 😂
That ice cube lady I know from a Hannah Alonzo video, she also says in that video that these Tiktoks are advertisements and not real life.
Influencers are fake? WHAT?! LMAO that ad read about killed me!
I'm not from the USA but I don't have tiktok. I tend to just watch instagram reels which are largely just tiktok re-uploads anyway. The thing I watched was a dog account's video with the on screen caption "if tiktok gets banned who will Dunkin (dog's name) gonna twerk for when his collar comes off 💔💔💔" and I was just sitting there going girl idfk maybe the exact platform I'm watching this on. I understand that reels are just one part of insta, not the focus and maybe you can't make money off it in the same way, but people just completely act like there's no other short form platform than tiktok... while actively crossposting their videos on other platforms
UA-cam shorts are basically just re-uploaded tiktoks as well so yeah, I don't know what's going on in their heads.

I deleted all my social media back in the pandemic after that one documentary on what it does to your perception of information and I'm so glad. The bit of good social media has done is far, far outweighed by the harm it has done. I actually feel better and I have a lot of time on my hands since I don't mindlessly scroll for hours. In general I think what's best for us all is to stop using social media but I know the chances of that happening or 1 in a trillion so I just mind my business.
I recently gave up using instagram (mostly just looked at dog rescue stuff and memes anyway), and now all I have left is tumblr, youtube, and neocities. I don't think I'll ever make another social media account ever again.
Thank you!! I've been saying that the Tiktok 'ban' only being twelve hours was just ridiculous on a strategic level! Shoulda been after inauguration. Would I have liked that? No, but that it didn't happen feels foolish.
I'm confused, didn't these people plan to continue making content on other platforms for at least a fraction of their audience that follows them onto those platforms? How did they plan on doing that when revealing things that would 100% create backlash for them?
Anything you see online is entertainment first imo. Like loads of tiny reality shows with occasional product placement, weird writing, and wild story arcs. Even UA-cam removed that "broadcast yourself" slogan because everyone's got their stage/on camera persona when they're making content.
I love the indoor cat thing, reminds me of that tumblr about "The worst cat" and it's just baby hippos.
I love the statement of "taking back your attention".
As a Canadian seeing that weird ass message praising Trump when I opened the app (which I only had to react to Tiktoks my gf sent me), I uninstalled it. Weird propaganda and I couldn't see that kind of thing happening with a Canadian leader.
3:21 “Has the habit of assigning malice when stupidity is the answer for people’s behaviour on the app.” I’m keeping that quote in my back pocket.
Influencers lying? Colour me surprised.
I was spending at least an hour a day just scrolling Tiktok, but the second the app namedropped the orange dictator I deleted it off my phone. I truly don't remember why I liked it so much 😂

Yes!! This! I’ve been trying to get more into more community-based organizations irl because it’s important to know your neighbors and care for those around you irl

Good message. I only have a UA-cam account now. No Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Snapchat, etc. It's been lovely. And I'm even planning to limit my time on UA-cam to once a week to play in the background while i meal prep just to catch up on channels that i like. Social media isn't bad, but it can be if you don't engage with it cautiously.
The indoor cats/chickens lady reminds me of the 'worst cat' meme where people would share photos of baby hippos and say they were the worst cats
As soon as tt came back, I dled my stuff and deleted, because I wont stick around when an app plays with me like that
Ryan Madison is free despite his actions, Bill Cosby is free despite his actions and James Deen is free despite his actions. So I can't even blame people for thinking that no matter what they admitted to it wouldn't affect their overall career considering what can seemingly be forgiven. (Regarding your point around 17:20)
who is Ryan Madison?
I have never and will never TikTok, but my attention was drained in a similar fashion by work burnout. The stress and focus of teaching in a TERRIBLE school for three years left me in a state where I’d literally go home, sit on my couch, and stare at my wall, or something I don’t remember watching on my TV, or UA-cam on my phone until it was time to go to bed. If I was lucky I remembered to get up and feed myself at some point.
Since moving to China (ironic given the video topic) and working at a fabulous school and having my commute time for any and all things drop to near 0, my attention and mental energy has risen insanely. I’m reading books, I’m studying things in my career again, I’m picking up long-dead hobbies and eating healthier.
Obviously removing work stress is a LOT harder than deleting an app, but yes in ANY capacity that you can reclaim your attention you MUST
we live in a world that encourages dishonesty to get ahead, even job interviews pretty much hire the best liar
For me the hilarious thing was these tiktoks were also posted to reels/shorts as well 😂
While im still an active user of Tiktok, I've seen my screentime go WAY down. Maybe it's a change in my schedule with college picking back up, but I've been reading more, drawing more and working on my novel. I feel productive again. The ban woke up something in me, i feel more connected to myself
I love knowing that I will never influenced by random people online. Yes, all the those "famous" people on Tiktok are random people at the end of the day so why should I trust them? It's all about numbers, clout, and money to them, especially fitness influencers. Sure, not all, but a vast majority. The smugness of knowing people will still support even if you lie. I will never be part of or support something like that. Intent is so important and at the heart of everything we do and consume. My intent is to be happy with whatever I do and social media does not make me happy, so I stay away and watch recap videos like this.
The major struggle I have always had with influencers is just this, they create content to appear real. They make their content look like life advice or a tutorial and the reality is they are fully fake for clicks. Then somehow we are expected as consumers to know things are fake when they are being presented as real. AND they double down with saying things like, "seriously this works. I do this everyday. This isn't just clickbait"
Talking about reclaiming time from apps -- after the election I deleted TikTok and ... immediately stopped thinking about it. Like the switch happened in a single day. I used to always go on tiktok and then suddenly I didn't care. It was wild and very interesting to see that a thing I thought I "needed" actually was completely irrelevant to my life
I deleted it as soon as I saw that "thank you president trump!" message, sometimes i open up xiaohongshu to look at recipes and cat videos. i remember seeing one girl admit to hating the 'bloom greens' that she constantly promoted and like....yeah. shtty to admit to doing false advertisements trying to get money from your following base of calorie-deficient 16 year olds but not surprising.
I think one of the biggest differences is whether the lies could bring unhappiness or harm to a viewer. I feel like sometimes influencers forget that they are literally called "INFLUENCERS" for a reason! Especially the fact that kids can be on the apps. Like the mukbang person, it could cause serious harm to a person's health if they tried to follow their diet because they thought it was true. Or the exercise regimens, someone could wind up seriously injured from doing too much. Versus things that are not harmful like the indoor cat/chicken joke. I think influencers need to remember that kids watch this content and may think it is real and try to duplicate it. Look at a certain laundry detergent "challenge" for a good example of doing something you KNOW is harmful but kids wanting the attention more.
i deleted my account when the ban was like 90 days out, deleted the app, and i don't care if it gets "saved" i won't be going back.
Thanks for the video Swell! I was hoping you'd cover this, it was so funny/crazy when I saw how many people were possibly nuking their platform to a Family Guy sound 😂
I was someone who deleted my TikTok account before the ban because I'm paranoid lol. And I'm not going back after the whole "Say Thank You 🍊" debacle
I’m not on TikTok at all but it really seems like a bunch of disingenuous, attention-hungry creators trying to entrap viewers who can’t help but be glued to their phone.
As someone from Europe, did the Americans forget about the rest of the world? We were always going to be able to see the material and post about it?
Edit: I continued watching and finally someone adressed this. Ive watched multiple videos and no one adressed it
Americans tend to forget that not everyone is American. They probably think the entire world population is in Indiana or some place like it
not having - and never having - tiktok is now officially part of my personality
I genuinely had no idea who any of the people who did reveals were.
Water is wet. Oh, I thought we were stating clearly obvious things. 😂
thank you, Im done and just getting into my basic thing which is my happiness in self other than digital media and finding myself! you are the bread of the butter of life, love you with the open mindedness that you have
“Tiktok is addictive” i am confused as to how people dont realize why it needs to be banned 😂
Also its not unconstitutional to ban TikTok cuz the supreme court said it wasn’t and like it or not what they say is or isn’t is the definition of constitutional vs unconstitutional
Broke my phone so now I don't have TikTok but the only thing I'm missing now is getting news so easily. It's hard finding reliable news sources now. I have PBS news but it feels wild. I've also put more energy into healing my core. It's WILD how different it is remembering theres more in life than the Internet
So TT was your reliable news source, oh dear girl
@@stacyinfishersmy thoughts exactly... 😅 but on a more helpful note, off the top of my head I can recommend following NowThis Impact, Leeja Miller and More Perfect Union here on yt. I also think Philip deFranco's shows have been pretty good of late. If you want coverage that's not US centric (as all your media seems to be very heavily US focused), Al Jazeera English is actually really good; every time I switch it on there's a really interesting documentary teaching me about something new with a global focus.
TikTok is not a reliable news source
I recommend Reuters! It’s a great factual, unbiased news-source.
Influencers lying to us? Really? What are you going to tell me next? That water is wet?
So glad you’re not an Influencer. You’d never lie to us.
I find the worst ones are the lied about their workouts & what they eat to keep that body type
As a content creator, I get deeply insulted when people call me an influencer
I only supported the ban because of what Tik Tok does to our brains, wallet, and self esteem. That’s also why I hardly ever opened the app.
I deleted my account almost 5 years ago now and I’m glad I did, I was spending WAY too much time scrolling on it every day, so I haven’t been tangled up in the drama since then and I’m very glad for it
You having Jen Hamilton with her indoor cats is fantastic lmao
Bless Jen Hamilton and her indoor cats for staying on the right side of history.
Man, influencers, I don't trust anybody anymore...
Are you lying to me about influencers lying to me?
Hearing ppl talk abt how tiktok impacted their attention span makes me weirdly glad that i have adhd that makes me hyperfocus most of the time. Scrolling thru tiktok never sounded appealing to me, but putting on a 3hr+ youtube video about a topic i know nothing about while i craft? Sign me tf up! Hyperfocus isnt great either, its caused a ton of issues in my life, but having experienced both sides i gotta say that inattention comes w a crushing feeling that hyperfocus just doesnt have.
It’s so pathetic that people were literally acting like their entire life was over, “I feel so isolated from the world” because they get 99% of their news and worldview from the tiktok algorithm
