I have a vivid memory of me as child in the 00s watching a tv news segment about how recycled plastic bottles could be turned into clothing. And I was like "wow, the future will be so cool" and now here we are surrounded by microplastics 😭
The fact that women in business are under more scrutiny than men being used as a shield against criticism makes me quite angry. We should judge men in positions of power more harshly, not give women who emulate their behavior a free pass.
Okay but like as an individual we can talk about someone without being compared someone else , this is bad practice ....... We are talking about business not the gender issue . Yes there are male operated company which are if not more scammy than this but regardless this is scam as well .
I don't understand how people don't realise that if someone is ultimately (whether your realise it or not) trying to sell you something, they don't care about you - just your money and loyalty to spending it on them!!
Exactly. At most they care about making a good enough product that you’ll come back to buy more, it’s never “I just really wanted to make something that make people feel good about themselves”. But from what I’ve heard, Djerf avenue quality doesn’t even reflect the price, so really, Matilda doesn’t even care about that
There’s a concept here in Sweden called “Jantelagen”, which can be summarised as “You mustn’t think that you are special or better than anyone else”. It’s often highly criticised, but from a more charitably egalitarian perspective it also means that us Swedes are highly resistant to diva behaviour. I wonder if that’s partially why she’s more known outside of Sweden than in it, because if you’re looking to be worshipped and have your blatant narcissism defended, the Nordics are the wrong place to be.
New Zealand has imported that concept as "tall poppy syndrome". Some people say it's a bad thing but those kinds of people turn out to be narcissistic bumheads whose "success" is based off more luck (or fraud) than hard work. Success needs both and to flaunt your good luck to others that also work hard but don't have the same opportunities is just well...mean.
Hi another reason why recycled polyester sucks (coming from a textile student) - it can only be recycled about 6-7 times. After that the polyester fibre is too short. ALSO you cannot really have 100% recycled polyester, you always need virgin polyester to get a garment. EU is looking to ban recycled polyester made from PET though.
I honestly don’t understand how anyone over the age of 18 would even care about an influencer to the extent of wanting to emulate their life and worship them… especially when marketing and brand are spoken about so regularly. There is no authenticity when you make yourself a product.
If you ask me (34 yo, only one sns account, not following influencers), it could be escapism from reality and unwillingness to work on your own life to improve it one way or another. Influencer worship takes often shape of desperate aspiration to attain their curated, picture pretty lifestyle without realisation that this is not something to really aspire to. But some ppl like to comfortable sit in their naive, deluded ways, in sns cloud, then complain about everything being expensive and whining about lifestyle costs (trust me, I have sister who drowns in debt because of that mindset, so I see firsthand how harmful influencer sns lifestyle worship can be).
@@nonameface90 Yes, I totally agree with the escapism of it. I just find it an bit odd when people with a fully developed frontal lobe worship these people.
I feel like Matilda has always been bigger in America compared to here in Sweden, not surprisingly considering her clothing style are super typical here and crazy expensive. I’ll be surprised if she’ll ever become bigger here now since all the claims are the complete opposite to work culture in Sweden.
I agree! Sure she’s beautiful but she doesn’t really stand out here, her style might be considered a bit boring and without personality (even if it’s stylish). There’s not much originality about her. However what’s considered boring here might be considered exotic in the US. Maybe boring is a harsh term but you get my drift.
I feel like the alarm bells should've been way louder when, instead of coming out and being like "as the head of this company I am sorry about this whole copy right thing. It was a mistake on our part and we truly didn't mean to target fans of the brand and are working with our 3rd party agency to be better" Matilda literally quit tiktok and ghosted, only to return quietly when it had blown over. To me hiding behind other people and taking no responsibility for your company and more importantly your fans who keep that company afloat was such a massive red flag. That being said, as a Scandi girl myself, I've been bullied and ostracized by girls who look, talk and behave like Matilda my entire life bc I am plus sized. Of course looking like Matilda does not make you a bully- but I can assure you every girl who has bullied me looks like her.
The thing for me is that all the clothes she sells you can find at a thrift store. An oversized blazer?? There’s 100s sitting at local thrift stores and you can def find ones with better materials.
I am so ready for the hype around Scandinavian aesthetic to die the hell out and people to realize it is a hyper commercialised idea of said aethetic, which always connected back to the wealthy side of society. On Matilda Djerf - didn't know who she was, very very interesting video and I was sat the whole way through.
I just want to point out that even if you wouldn’t be “shocked” by these allegations because influencers are fake etc etc, if you owned clothes from DA (like I do), you now see them as a “hanging waste of money” in your closet. Her fakeness will result in people never wearing the clothes again because of negative connotations and this will result in clothes being thrown away, something that she “so strongly was against”.

also just not tailored very well? I saw it pointed out in a different video, but it’s true, the pieces don’t seem to fit well or sit right on the models; the clothing construction doesn’t seem well designed
GenZ seems to have 2 modes of fashion: ripping off Millennials, and dressing, en mass, in the most bland clothes imaginal. The first is just normal trend cycles, I think the second thing is a response to having so much fixation on certain influencers who set trends, and the need to follow their aesthetic and be part of the herd while also being bombarded by TikTok microtrends. This has led to a safe uniform of white and beige.

I’m really interested in deep-dives on sustainable fashion, or sustainability in general. I’m enjoying learning how to sew rn but as far as I can tell, sewing machines only work with polyester thread. That’s a bummer when you’re trying to repurpose your old clothes to be sustainable but then you’re forced to use virgin polyester to achieve it.
Yeah, you can find some quilting machines that can use cotton thread, but generally speaking, sewing machines of all types get too hot and move too fast for cotton. Really sucks! One of my compromises here is to mend with cotton by hand. One of my other compromises is to get the highest quality poly thread I can afford because it’s less likely to snap in the machine or break on seams over time (I don’t tend to be gentle on my clothes).
I was incredibly lucky to grow up learning about the beauty of natural fibres from my Italian mum, so she has helped me keep a reduced carbon footprint throughout my life (aka only buying clothes made from natural fibres), and it's mad trying on smth made from polyester at a shop, I immediately notice the difference.
