A History of Hyenas

- Hyenas are a family of Feliform Carnivorans renowned for their bone crushing jaws and eerie laughing calls. Apart from the four living species, the group has a detailed fossil record that details a transition from civet-like arboreal ancestors to the canine-like predators we know today. Their diversity peaked roughly 15 mya, when many genera roamed across Africa, Eurasia and even North America.

It's so strange to me that Hyaenodon has lots of traits akin to Hyenas but they're not related
In Nigeria there's a group of people who keep hyenas as pets, or show animals like in a circus. I wonder if given the chance could hyenas become as useful to humanity as dogs? It is a shame that these beautiful creatures are given such a bad reputation in the eyes of most modern media, because humans have a tendency to kill those animals that we identify as threats. This will most likely lead to their eventual extinction. Perhaps one day this will change and you may find yourself strolling through Central Park with a hyena at your side.
