Stargate SG1 (Seasons 6-10) Retrospective/Review - Stargate Retrospective, Part 3

- Stargate SG1 rode success for five years, garnering a passionate fanbase who now saw the series as the definitive incarnation of Stargate, superseding the original movie. It was quite a shock to these fans when at the end of its fifth season, the show was cancelled by its original network and one of its main cast members departed the series. If any other series was dealt such a blow, it likely wouldn’t survive. But Stargate SG1 wasn’t any other show and remarkably not only did it survive, it thrived.

YES. STARGATE ATLANTIS RETROSPECTIVE, LETS GOOOOOOO!
Yes!!!! 100%
Controversial take: SGA > SG1
@@agilemind6241the based take you mean (I love Atlantis)
@@agilemind6241 I disagree, but only barely. It was great
@@agilemind6241 my mind says you right but my heart says you’re a traitor 😂
"Yeah... Sir, we can't call it the Enterprise."
"WHY NOT??!"
"Sir. because we'd be the enemies worse then the gould's... Lawers."
"For starters, that would mean having to butt heads with Navy brass. In terms of butt heads, the Navy wins through sheer experience."
The Navy already called dibs on the name. USAF would never risk being confused for USN!
Sir, Sci-Fi would be sued.
one of the best lines in the series
STARGATE is GOAT
STARGOÅT
indeed
STARGOAT!!!
Indeed.
Unnatural Selection is exactly the dark O'Neill story that I was talking about. Jack's sarcasm and affect of ignorance was always a suface-level element of his character. Underneath that facade, he was always very ruthless in his willingness to let the ends justify the means.
I love how it came to bite him in the butt when Fifth became their worst nightmare and main antagonist of the galaxy in S8. Him and Reese's case were certainly a food for thought.
I think O'Neill's leadership and style are best summed up by this exchange:
O'Neill: If you don't do what [the Trust] want, they'll kill ya. If you don't do what WE want, we'll let 'em.
Kinsey: That's as good as firing the bullet yourself! I thought Stargate Command didn't do that sort of thing!?
O'Neill: *nonchalant* Well... we're under new management.
I think some of my other favourite episodes with O'Neill's darker side on display are when he teams up with Maybourne. Either Chain Reaction or 48 hours.
Chain Reaction because any opportunity to screw with Kinsey is welcome. And the audacity of pointing (absolutely not waving!) a gun at the man in his own house with Congress down stairs is *chefs kiss*.
But 48 Hours shows how lethal, stealthy and terrifyingly effective he is when the chips are down. Classic case of "beware of an old man in a profession where men die young". The power is out for maybe... 5 minutes? And he takes out every single guard in a rogue NID compound to interrogate a Gou'ald prisoner.
He was a "black operations" specialist. He liked to play dumb, but everyone who knew him recognized it was a facade.
Jack is jack. He has done some nasty things in his past and learned the mission comes first. He has operations where only a few came back and there was a time he crashed in the middle east and had to survive through the pain. He knows that dark part of him and it served him well. But he doeesn't want to be that person, but he knows for his team to survive, he has to be that person, to make those decisions.
Funnily enough, "Corin Nemec" sounds much more like an alien character than "Jonas Quinn".
Ba'al remains my favorite sassy villain. RIP Cliff Simon
And I absolutely loved seasons 9-10. Browder and Black were great additions to the show. I wish we had had more time with that team.
Yes! My biggest regret is not getting more time with Vala. She'd come so far.
Jonas' actor did an amazing job, underrated character
Absolutely. He wasnt a bad character by any means, just... the least good, if anything. And that tells volumes about how good this show was.
There must be an alternate universe where he became an important and vital part of the team long-term. In the 9th season episode where they brought back Martouf and Dr. Fraiser, a Jonas comeback would have been nice, too.
I think if SG Universe ran one more season they could have brought him back... since his homeworld was involved in SGU S2.
Well its true that Parker Lewis Can't Lose! If you haven't checked out Corin Nemec in that, you really should. Its actually a really fun show.
He was great, really liked his different personality, and surprisingly he fitted very well.
@@Grivehn SGU was jsut a bad idea. sorry but I consider it the show that killed the franchise
@Revkor ...no that was Origins ..
This is the era of Stargate that I grew up with. This combined with Farscape and Star Trek reruns is synonymous with the Sci-fi Channel and lazy weekends with my dad.
Hah me and my old man always made a point of watching SG1 or Voyager on SciFi channel after he got back from work since we both loved SciFi.
I’m sure that was the case for many around our age that grew up with the SciFi channel.
Man. SG-1, DS9, Voyager, Farscape, Lexx, Andromeda, Outer Limits, SeaQuest, Sliders... Us kids with sci-fi loving dads ate GOOD, in the mid-to-late 90's/early 00's.
Your 'era'? Heck, I watched the 1994 movie in the theater. I didn't know there were discrete epochs in Stargate fandom.
@@BogeyTheBear An era is usually defined as a period of times revolving notable events, so yeah it kind of makes sense to think of it as a new era going from movies to TV.
🤷♂️
@@BigHeadClanused to watch with my pops.
The soft reboot of SG1 in season 9 is the best in any series I’ve ever watched. Especially that many years into the series.
Agreed. Seasons 9-10 were absolutely fantastic. Which is all the more impressive given it was practically a reset of the series.
so agreed. Honestly I find most shows that towards the end they get a little bit stale, or take things too far. Somehow SG1 managed to continue to get better with age and pull off raising the stakes without going over the top.
Agreed. I didn't like it at first because it felt like a spinoff, but after a couple of episodes I loved it.
I loved how chrichton managed to be a fun charachter even when his snarky type was already used by macgyver and commander sheppard.
He pulled it off to notmbe a cheap knockoff.
I do think it was a step-down from the peaks of SG-1, but considering the context, it was still a good move and was well done. It didn't drag the show back up to those peaks, but it kept the show from the dregs that you'd expect a 9th and 10th season in a show (even one with as much potential as the Stargate) to be delving into.
There are no fish in this pond, are there? 😇 Nope *Catches fish* 😮 Close enough... 😅 LOVE IT!
Vala being burned alive... that scene tugs hard every time I watch it.
"Stargate Atlantis" was my love from the first sight. I watched it in the hardest period of my life. I'd like to see Retrospective about it too!
It's weird rewatching Atlantis and seeing a (relatively) small Jason Momoa.
Is there a reason Dr Frasier wasn't mentioned? I recall hear death effecting me massively.
Heroes was one of the best two-parters in the series, very sad it didn't even get a mention.
The guy who played Ball died in a surfing accident a few years ago
Also Julian sands has passed away who played the leader of the ori in one episode and is shown in this video. His remains were found on the side of a mountain in california last year.
Great video! I'm surprised you didn't mention the incredible on-screen chemistry between Michael Shanks and Claudia Black. The relationship that Daniel and Vala develop is compelling.
Claudia Black could establish chemistry with a blank concrete wall, though.
I always thought it would have been funny if they would have named the ship the Enterprise and hung a hat on it by saying "Why not? Our first space shuttle was named the enterprise"
Episode 200 will always be my favourite special of any tv show of all time

Ten seasons of consistent quality. How many shows come close to that.
I'm a 90's kid and ashamed to say that i've never watched Stargate. I really should get too it.
It's way better than you'd think. Especially after season 5. You know, in my opinion.
I too didn't get into the show in the 90's but I just finished watching the entire franchise a month ago on Amazon Prime and trust me, it's friggin' WORTH IT! All of it, including the movies (not Origins though, having trouble finding a place to watch it) but listen to me when I say that seasons 9/10/movies of SG-1 and Atlantis aired simultaneously so it is best to Google the watch list so you get the most out of the crossover episodes and where the movies sit in the timeline! You're in for an awesome ride! Godspeed ❤!
I'm an 80's kid and there are tons of shows from then which I never got into. Talking about the more adult-oriented fare from that era because, well, I wasn't an adult.
I was unable to watch it while it was Syndication'd because life got in the way. School. Sports. Life as a teenager. I remember catching a few episodes here and there and always wanting to watch more. It wasn't until I was in the army that I was able to actually sit down and watch them. Never got into atlantis or universe or any of the movies for that matter... I intend on correcting this.
Finally! Someone who agrees with my appreciation for the Ori arc. My only complaint with it was that the resolution and overall progression of season 10 felt pretty rushed.
In a span about of about 10 years the tauri had managed to defeat the goa'uld who had previously reigned over the galaxy for decades, defeat the replicators who even the Asgard had trouble defeating and managed to stop the ori who's level of power and technology was on par with that of the ancients and the ori, they even managed to eventually negotiate a truce with the wraith, something the ancients had tried to do but failed
Decades? Think more like millenia.
I _highly_ doubt the Lanteans ever tried to negotiate with the Wraith.
The Wraith painted themselves into the corner by cloning an army of immortal soldiers. As a result, they suffered a population pressure crisis that subsequently compels them to acts of diplomacy.
One of the strangest bits of foreshadowing I saw involving SG-1's end was in interviews both Browder and Black having just gotten to deal with the Command pilot were hoping to not jinx the show by being the final reason to cancel it. As said, they had just finished wrapping up Peacekeeper Wars at the time, so that sting was very fresh.
The hard truth is the SyFy network doesn't let a show live longer than five years. After five seasons comes the renegotiation for contracts, and SyFy's stance is "We could use the same money for a new show rather than spend more keeping up an old one..." and the show gets the ax.
Mind you, the first five seasons of SG-1 was on another network.
@@BogeyTheBear I would buy that, if it weren't for the fact that Farscape was working on getting a fifth ready, when it got canned. A fifth that had already been contracted in.
Agree that being able to introduce a compelling antagonist (the Ori) that late in a series is really hard, but SG1 somehow managed to do it successfully.
Good that you liked them, but the Ori didn't work for me...the fact that their ships looked like toilet seats didn't help.
Also agree. They managed to make them really threatening and properly powerful. What they offered were no tricks and falsehoods. For all intents and purposes, the Ancients as well as the Ori are gods from the view of the mortal realm. Especially to a galaxy full of medieval farmers.
Even the Asgards said they only got a glimpse of the Ancient's knowledge and thats what propelled them forward into the galactic powerhouse they became.
Bit of a shame their 3rd season was cut short and made into a movie instead, but even that was still a fine send-off for that arc.
Problem is that the one and only resolution to the arc was yet another MacGuffin hunt.
@@BogeyTheBear Yes, I pretty much lost interest in the Ori after a couple of episodes because there was no logical way for SG1 to win. They were fighting effectively the Old Testament god but pretending they weren't so the Christian fundys wouldn't get mad. Then all that stupid Merlin stuff and the show just completely gave up on being sci-fi at all thematically. It had to be dumb McGuffin to turn it around and let SG1 win without really earning it.
@@BogeyTheBear that's the problem when you introduce a villain that's unimaginably powerful, the only way it can possibly be resolved is a magical deus ex machina.
I've watched this series 3 times through now. I get a severe sense of loss when I watch that final shot of the cast and the Stargate. Thank you for the summary, and thank you for the memories.
Thank you for presenting my formative years to me again. Stargate and Star Trek TNG are so important to me.
I honestly wasn't aware of any concerns around changes to the cast in the later years. IMHO, the show had done such a good job evolving that it seemed totally natural to expect fresh blood. Like in the real world somebody like O'Neil is either going to get promoted or retire, he wouldn't be going forever. The fact that we knew he was off doing other things made it easy to say goodbye and welcome the new cast - especially when they were coming from another excellent sci-fi show.
‘Unending’ is GENIUS I’ll never understand why people don’t like it…
For a "Series Finale" it doesn't wrap up anything and leaves a feeling of wanting more without the feeling of closure. So I can understand why some people dislike it. For me personally, it is one of the best episodes of the series and was a great season 10 finale and an pretty high on my personal favorites list. Thankfully, we did get the Ark of Truth to wrap up the Ori storyline. Though it still sucks we never got that O'neill centric movie!
I found it quite underwhelming. What a sad and random ending for the Asgard. It didn't help that I'm not a fan of Bridge's character or Vala, and found Mitchell quite boring.
I think because SG-1 had done so many great big action-packaged stories in Season 7/8/9/10 up until then it was a change of pace. Personally, I think it was a good ending considering they didn't have the time to make full use of the story they had planned and not know if they had a movie at all to work with.
@@primarybufferpanel9939 the Asgard dying sucked but they needed something big to get the story going
Well, it's no "These Are the Voyages"
Stargate was a huge part of my life growing up. Friday nights were always a treat. SG-1, Atlantis, and Battlestar Galactica while playing PC in my dad's office. Great times. Amazing work as usual. Thank you.
My family was SUPER into SG-1 when I was a kid. Watching the new episode was always a big deal
I always liked Ba'als pragmatic approach, he accepted that as a go'auld he was essentially the baddie but didn't dive headfirst into the "I am a god" ego trip that defined the majority of the system lords. Instead he simply played the role as the situation required.
They never go into the earth side details but I've always had a feeling that the atlantis thread involving the trust operative was when the organisation was under Ba'als control.
anubis voice actor is the same sokkar’s actor.❤
SG is truly something else. Your videos helps me to re-live a lot. Thank you
Roland's Stargate movie sparked my interest in science fiction, Egypt, and space. I would watch it repeatedly on VHS at my grandma's house, trying to identify star constellations in newspapers in order to find an address while describing everything to her, big fan of scifi.
Then Stargate SG-1 came along, and my mom and I would binge-watch the five episodes we had recorded on VHS throughout the week every weekend. I even resisted watching the episodes right after school, saving them to watch later with her.
Years later, after spending three hours talking about Stargate SG-1 on a first date at a bar with a certain girl, I knew she was the one. Eight years later, we're still going strong, and we're getting married soon after having our own adventure going to unknown by moving from Europe to New Zealand.
I already bookmarked SG-1 for re watching thanks to your videos. I'll have SG theme song on my wedding party.
If i ever could meet anyone from the cast, i would really want them to know and to thank them for being my guides trough everything nice in my life.
I’m glad I found this channel. I remember feeling so sad when the last episode of SG1 aired, and then quite a bit of time had passed and a friend of mine randomly said have you seen the Stargate movies? And I replied "there was only one" he said "no not the feature film the two movies that were made after the last season" I still remember now almost running home to Google it! By then continuum and ark of truth for sale in WHSmith in my local town and I managed to buy them that day. I was extremely happy that day. 😊😊
I'll never forget how my late grandpa introduced me to this show almost 20 years ago. Made me a huge fan of scifi from that day on and this show holds a special place in my heart. Thanks for making this amazing retrospective, it has brought back many great memories. One thing I do want to note however, the puppet segment in the 200th episode was not only made by the puppeteers from Team America but also inspired by it instead of thunderbirds, atleast according to Brad Wright in the dvd commentary.
Totally with you on the Ori arc. It's the most philosophically rich part of the whole franchise.
Stargate Atlantis was what got me into Stargate but I have always loved the Ori arc... really brave story in a post 9/11 world.
This was an absolutely awesome review and I honestly feel indebted to you for doing it. I have long felt that Stargate as a franchise and SG one in particular or the best American Science Fiction series ever. And I think that’s because it really tried harder than it had to. It could easily have costed by for a few seasons on recognition, Rodenberry Andromeda or other late 90s./early 2000s filler content. But instead, they really put their heart and soul into it. The show was internally consistent, and as you pointed out, it was about change. Status quo was never status quo very long. The franchise had an amazing and unprecedented knack for course correction when they inevitably did screw up from time to time.
And I am personally gratified by your high praise for the so-called “Fargate” seasons. I know a lot of people didn’t like them, I know a lot of people didn’t give them a chance, but I always felt it was a fantastic way to rejuvenate the series, And when it abruptly ended, I legitimately felt cheated that we were not going to get to spend more time getting to know, Cam, Landry, Lam, and all of the new directions the show would inevitably have gone in.
To be honest, I still feel cheated by that 17 years later.
Just want to say how much I love your content. You're one of my few Patreon subscriptions.
This will always be my favorite series of all time as it combines every subject I'm obsessed with. If i created a series for myself this would be it.
When I graduated high school I wasn’t sure what to do with my life. I had grown up with Stargate and it’s my “Star” franchise. So I decided to join the Air Force. Not a lot of people can say that their nerdy tv show can fundamentally change their life but Stargate certainly did.
Get to go on any fun adventures??😏
Every season I loved this show more and more. Even while it was airing you knew this was something special
You’ve convinced me to give Stargate another go. The older I get, the less I like the new stuff coming out, so I’m looking forward to experiencing a new-to-me show from same time period as so many of my other favorite shows.
Hey, I made it through Andromeda & Earth: Final Conflict. I KNOW Stargate will blow them out of the water! 😂👏🏻
Great video as always. I've always really liked "Lifeboat" from season 7, the one where they find the ship that puts all of the people into Daniel Jackson's head. It's a shame you didn't talk about it but I guess you only had an hour so you can't tlak about everything.
Why? Breadandchircuses makes 12hr videos on Starwars. 1hr just on ships. Another guy did a 9hr Bionicle lore video.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane, I used to watch Star Trek and Stargate Series every year switching which ones year to year to allow enough time to pass. But haven't watched any the last 6 years, this was like visiting old good friends and family. Feels good man.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane sir it was a blast going back through the seasons and getting to relive some of the moments and appreciate what SG1 accomplished.
Awwwww yes, I love it when the algorithm gives me exactly what I want as the first suggestion
Thanks for the videos about Stargate! Growing up in the late 90s in Germany it was one if not the most popular scifi show on televsion here. Nostalgia hits hard.
I'm American and JUST recently watched the entire franchise because I never did growing up, maybe one or two episodes on rerun but I wanted to wait until I could view it in its entirety. Finally got the opportunity a few months ago and HOLY CRAP I missed out!. And now I'm watching convention footage for insights to the actors as well as shared fandom and FedCon popped up. You guys DEFINITELY LOVE the show and were great hosts to all the cast members! Kudos ❤
It aired in Finland as well around the same time. Good times.
I think Paradise Lost was one of the best episodes of Season 6. It was very atmospheric and used more visuals than dialogue to tell the story.
Definitely! very underrated episode.
Great show , probably my personal favourite of th 90's
I didn't find SG1 until the Ori plot. I came to really enjoy Stargate, and followed SG1 into Atlantis. Such a big part of my love of sc-fi. This channel rocks for these retrospectives. Thanks Rowan!
I just started watching this Part 3, but I know I'm gonna love it! Stargate SG1 is still my fav sci-fi TV show and top 3 of all time!
Edit: I'm so glad that you like Ben and Claudia in seasons 9 & 10. I always liked them and the call backs and jokes to Farscape. They were a super fun addition, to me. : )
The Mobius episode is one of my favorite alternative universe timelines on this show!
Stargate Universe was underrated. I hope you cover it!
Heck yeah! My relaxing Sunday is now complete.
The last two watch throughs of SG-1 I cannot bring myself to watch the very last episode. I just cant do it! I watched it when it aired so many moons ago and I was so blown away how emotional it was.
This video has got me wanting to watch the series all over again. Maybe this time I'll watch that episode!
Thank you for this retrospective for such an amazing show!
I love it when Jonus and Jackson where on screen together. I had hoped they would find a way to keep them both, but well. He was supposed to have come back for more episodes, but outside of the one that didn't happen either. However, I remember seeing why the show was canceled. You see the problem wasn't Scifi channel, but NBC, the company that owned Scifi at the time. You see, NBC is a major broadcaster in the US, and at that time all of them were suffering due to people migrating to cable channels. However, they were able to cut cost and find success with two different types of shows: the single-camera show for which they had Modern Family and reality TV. At that time, SciFi had 3 expensive science fiction shows running concurrently: SG1, SGA, and Battlestar Galactica. SciFi was told that they had to cancel one of them to save cost, and replace it with an Earthbound show with lower cost. So, since SG1 was the oldest, and had been dodging cancellation for years, they chose SG1. Interesting fact, while BSG was SciFi's most successful mini-series, it never surpassed SG1 in the ratings for the TV show.
35:49.. well played sir. Synched up Cameron's voice.
Yes! The Ori are awesome villains!
Love Vala and Mitchell too.
Same. Maybe its just me for being younger, but I found Mitchell funnier than O'Neill. And the way it was made clear he isnt *really* the leader of the team, but just one of them made for a slightly healthier dynamic too, than Jack berating Daniel for showing human emotions and empathy every second episode.
@@Grivehnagreed, some of the shows dialog and themes wouldn't be "tolerated" in today's landscape. It's a trip to see the evolution of the show too (especially with vfx and cellphone usage) lol!
Watching Teal’c interact with his son I cant help but anticipate every sentence ending with “BOY!” #BeBetter
Unending was the first time I'd heard "have you seen the rain" and now I can't not hear it without crying. I know it was for Vietnam but first impressions make verything. ;-;
Stargate is my favorite tv show of all time!
58:32 The spin-off show we all wanted
So now we need ark of truth, Continuum, Atlantis, and universe. Looking forward to it.
Having watched both the B5 Retrospective, some of the Star Trek of the same, I figured SG1 Retrospective would show up eventually. B5 and SG1 are my fav sci-fi shows and I just love these. Thank you, Rowan!
SG1 late seasons were the best. Firing on all cylinders and building on all the unique lore while not becoming overplayed or boring. An impressive feat for any show but simply legendary for one this long lasting and so many successful spinoffs. Too bad MGM itself suffered a catastrophic failure as a platform. Thus burying an otherwise thriving series that defined an entire sci-fi genre. New generations will no longer see shows like this and that's a crime.
Stargate is the greatest scifi TV series ever, full stop.
The Expanse and Dark Matter were good too.
I agree with you about seasons 9 and 10 - as much as I love the entire show, the Ori arc is my favourite and I wish we'd had longer with it
Thanks so much for making these retrospectives! These Stargate episodes bring me back to a simpler time in my life where I watched SG1 air with my dad as a kid. There were multiple times this video brought a tear to my eyes, remembering one of my favorite sci-fi shows. Thanks for that!
Thanks for this one, dear Rowan. Giving S9 & 10 a real watch after declining for years and enjoying it 🙏🏻
tue relationship between tealc and his son is so much better than the relationship between Worf and his son. similar characters, but so much better writting on sg1.
When Teal'C cried while talking to his son. Such good acting and writing.
A new retrospective? Yes, my favorite show every Sunday.
Really is one of my favourite ever shows. They got everything right. I think it's probably time for another rewatch!
Well this is lovely and heartwarming... I definitely need to go back and see the episodes I missed. But don't forget Stargate Infinity! :D
The TAS of StarGate is always forgotten about.
I kind of grown out of stargate in general. Episode 200th... however... I have to watch it every now and again. So good SF Fan service
True finale of Season 8 really felt like a finale.
SG1 was such a fantastic show, it really was such great escapism with brilliant characters & storytelling. How the franchise hasn’t been touched in years is beyond comprehension.
MGM wad broke with only money coming from Bond. They were bankrupt 3 times since 1990. They sold most of there films to Fox to make the MGM Hotel in Vegas
I like to thank Claudia Black for her appearance on the show. It made it much easier to know when to stop a rewatch of the series, which is season 8.
Watched every episode dozens of times and this vid taught me some new stuff.
Justice for Jonas!
My introduction to this gem of a show was on the Sci-fi channel. I fell in love with it there and remember trying desperately to find older episodes online. I eventually found them and was able to watch the whole series from the beginning. It's one of my top ten, all time favorite shows
I'm getting all nostalgic with this
I really liked seasons 9&10. I loved Vala, I really, really liked Cameron. I thought they brought a different, interesting dynamic to the show. I wish the network would've given the series at least 1 more season, to be able to give the show a respectful ending. While I enjoyed the ark of truth, it was just too much for one movie. I much preferred Stargate continuum, because it was an isolated storyline.
Oh Valla was hot.....now she's fat...like diabetes fat.
Thank-you very much for this work. This is why I have you set for all uploads.
It is amazing that since Goodfellas, actors try to keep their eyes open while firing... Well firearms.
I completely understand why you'd cover the SG:1 movies during the Atlantis section. Considering a certain cast member's time on the show and where it lies in the overall timeline.
Looking forward to the next part!
Hallowed are the Ori
You left out mention of the best clip show ever presented in television history: "Citizen Joe"
Citizen Joe works because it breaks the #1 unspoken rule of every clip show episode ever made: _Don't Burn Down The World._
Clip shows are a money-saving device. As a result, the frame story used to present these clips in some logical manner isn't supposed to stick. A cost-saving clip show isn't worthy of a story which carries any meaningful long-term impacts to its characters...
...until they actually did so in "Citizen Joe". Here they created a frame story with a progressing character arc and lasting consequences-- all of which results in genuine jeopardy. The fact that the main character _wasn't a previously established character in the series_ becomes irrelevant in such a case, especially when portrayed with the humor and charisma of guest star Dan Castellaneta as the titular "Citizen Joe" Spencer, a barber from a small town in Indiana.
These retrospectives are amazing. Thanks.
The Ori Arc is my favourite and the Ori are my favourite Antagonists of Stargate Universe, sad they on;y got two Seasons I would've loved for more of them..
I absolutely love all the footage you’ve included in this
You are outstanding at retrospectives.
Rewatching in parallel SG1 and Atlantis after that. Great to have your analysis as a company
Great retrospective as always. This comment is going to be a series of bullet point... mostly good.
Although there were many great episodes later on, my favourite season was 5. All of the main cast were great but I also felt the replacement, Nemec, Bridges, Browder, Black and so on, did amazing jobs. I warmed to Jonas Quinn quicker than Vala in the village square. You said it perfectly yourself, they weren't carbon copies or 'lite' versions of who they were replacing. I also can't commend Browder and Black for enough for not only escaping John and Aeryn, but resetting their great chemistry from Farscape. Judge's acting ability also can't get enough praise.
They also had so many great guests and recurring recurring guests. You emotionally invested in them. Tony Amendola and Carmen Argenziano were great individually but those few moments where they interacted were gold.
The King Arthur / Ori. I liked the Ori as antagonists, particularly their aesthetics. I found the Camelot arc was very overt including, as in one of your clips of the sword fight, some very overtly cheesy music rather than the well-balanced and effective scores. I also really liked the character of Tomin. The visuals of Vala hammering on this dough as he walks in through the door. Not hobbles, not limps, not scuffs...WALKS.
With 200, all the references were funny but I loved the 'younger, edgier cast.'
Sci-fi fans are really fond and accepting of guests who have been on other shows, Morena Baccarin was a joy on Firefly and it was great to see her here. I so also have to agree with you that Adria and Vala relationship was never given a chance to deepen.
I also like the Ori, although I've always considered season 5 with the Anubis / Replica situations a more satisfying revamp.
Very much enjoying the recaps. I was maybe nitpicking a little in part 1, but I feel like each part has got better.
As a massive Stargate fan - and indeed Farscape / B5 - it's great to see the series being given such a thorough overview. I always felt the end of s10 was a bit rushed, but I guess I now understand why, bit of a shame really.
Bring on part 4! :)
I preferred early SG1, the Showtime seasons, where it was more military sci fi and exploration. The Syfi channel shift to space ships and then farscape part deux was not a good move.
Agreed, in the later series they lost that strict adherence to developing tech and just end up being another star trek show, complete with spaceships and tricorders etc. (seriously, at some point Carter just has a device that can scan anything... Including time displacement fields!?!?!? In the ori series')
I adore SG-1, and you have captured why very well. Atlantis is my favorite of the series, so I eagerly anticipate that as well. I was wondering if you plan on acknowledging the cartoon, Stargate Infinity? It was short-lived, had very little to do with the source material, and not very well done, but I think it deserves to be mentioned.
Great stuff! Surprised you didn't touch on Heroes where Dr Fraser dies and you're led to believe it's O'Neill both in the trailers leading up to it and the 2 parter itself. Highly emotional, terrific episodes
Hard agree on the Ori being one of the best arcs in SG1. Hallowed are the Ori!
Great job, Rowan! Stargate is one of my all time favourites. I am now very much looking forward to your retro of Atlantis!
