AADI POORAM
(आडि पूरम्)
Aadi Pooram is a popular festival in South India and more so in Vaishnavism. It falls in the 4th month (Aadi) of the Tamizh calendar in Poora Nakshatram (one of the 27 constellations) celebrating female divinity and the birth of goddess Aandaal (आण्डाल्), an incarnation of Bhudevi herself.
In the town of Srivilliputtur, Periyaazhvaar (also known as Vishnu chittar) offered his devotion to the Vatapatrashaayi (Vishnu) by weaving garlands of fresh flowers everyday. The childless devotee was blessed with a baby girl whom he found lying near the Tulsi bushes on the day of Aadipooram on a Friday. He named her Kodai and became a doted father to her. She grew up listening to the glories of lord Vishnu, falling in love with him. Out of devotion and love she wore the garlands woven by her father for the lord, imagining herself to be his bride and then offered it to the deity daily. On finding out, she was reprimanded by her father. Lord Ranganatha appeared in his dreams and convinced him of Kodai's devotion and expressed his wish to marry her. She was wedded as a young girl to Ranganatha swamy of Srirangam and mystically merged into his form.
Legend has it that when Bhudevi was rescued by Vishnu from the demon Hiranyaaksha, she requested the lord to bestow his grace upon all his devotees by protecting them from evil. The lord said that whoever offers devotion through garlands of flowers and songs will be blessed by him and that she'll be the means to preach them this wisdom. Thus she incarnated herself as Aandaal around the 8th century C.E. She's revered as one of the 12 Aazhvars (Vaishnava saints of south india).
Aandal devotedly wore garlands (Poomaalai) woven by her father to offer to the lord.
She has composed two major devotional texts (Paamaalai), which when sung with devotion can serve as a means to attain the lord's lotus feet.
1-Tiruppaavai (तिरुपावै)- Work comprising of 30 small songs on Lord Krishna.
2-Naachiyar Tirumozhi (नाचियार् तिरुमोळि)
Since she ruled the lord's heart, she came to be known as Aandaal (in tamizh means the lady who ruled). Known as Godaa Devi in North, she's also known as Kodai, Naachiyar and Ranganaayaki in South.
Iconographicallhy she is represented as a young maiden draped in a bright saree adorned with numerous jewelleries and floral garlands. She wears a bun on the left side of her head and stands with parrot in her left hand.
