    Just bought one. Old one (1.8ltr Corolla) also had CVT. This 2-litre seems to have a fixed first gear, then into CVT as you accelerate. I loved the old one - it was sooo smooth. The new one is more... clunky, away from stopped, with the fixed first gear. 5.9 litres per 100kms on a recent trip. 1400RPM at steady 100kph on flat ground. With only 1600 kms on the clock , it is early days.

    Once you "get the feel of it", the modern generation CVT is just great to drive. Simple, reliable and lasts forever.
    I have two friends, one with a BMW, the other with a Passat. The BMW's first gear dont work, the 2 year old Passat's DCG has been to repair for 5 weeks. "Advanced" transmissions like DCG are prone to fail and are very expensive to repair.

  • @samsonitejones4012

    Since nobody listens or understands this transmission and everybody posts about how bad CVT's try and understand what they are trying to achieve. This CVT can step through the belt positions with the vane pump and has a low speed gear that allows the engine to start and rev up to get into it's power RPM range by over speeding the Drive "pulley" to engage the transmission quicker. They are fixing the CVT lag, and trying to get more torque to the ground faster.

      Trying is not enough. Sure the load is removed upon take offs with with the addition of first gear, but once driving and want to go faster quickly stepping on the gas will cause a hi load and cause failure. There's a good reason they are not adding cvts on larger vehicles.

    My own car here in the U. S. of A. is a 2004 Mazda 3 with the 5-speed manual transmission. But recently, when I was in New Zealand, I rented a Toyauto Corolla with the CVT. In general it performed quite well, but there were things I didn't like about it.
    In the mountains I needed quick response so I usually put it into sport mode via a button on the center console. Unfortunately the button was hard to find without taking my eyes off of the rode. However, by increasing the minimum engine speed it did improve response.
    For some reason Toyauto apparently felt that they had to make the CVT imitate a stepped transmission so when pushing the car hard, it would imitate an upshift; one could hear the engine speed drop somewhat.
    Two suggestions for improvement: Find a way for the driver to select sport mode without having to find a little button, and do not imitate a stepped transmission by simulating gear shifts!

    • @Phrancis5
      @Phrancis5 6 років тому +30

      I hate that too. I've driven stick shift all my life and just got the new turbo CRV with a very nice CVT, but it does the fake upshifts because that's what the public needs to feel "familiar". CVTs offer unlimited gear ratios for smooth efficient linear acceleration. If I wanted to feel upshifts I'd go back to driving stick.

    • @Phrancis5
      @Phrancis5 5 років тому +2

      @Tim Monahan Ironically, when the first auto-slush boxes came out companies touted how many gears their cars had and how smooth the shifts were. CVTs make all of that moot, but so many need to feel the RPMs coincide with up-shifts... I still have an old Vtec Prelude SH where I can happily row the gears, but I'm very happy with today's CVTs as well.

      William Su this isn’t a real cvt a real cvt is for when you have more than 8 or so possible gear ratios and instead of making a 10 speed automatic since it’s there’s so many moving parts that’s where cvt steps in

    • @metathanatos1
      @metathanatos1 3 роки тому

      well i think the point of cvt was to remove those gear shift delays + rev down for smooth gear up while maintaining a high rev. then here are the smart toyota engineers, bringing them back on a cvt reducing the efficiency just because customers doesnt "feel" good about normal cvt.

    Subaru CVTs are smaller, and provide low end torque than a belt cvt. Subaru's CVTs are chains that wear much slower than the conventional belt and can flex into smaller diameters around the pulleys. Most people who buy a car with a cvt transmission want good fuel efficiency, but you need to know what kind of CVT your make and model has and if the vehicle itself is reliable. My 2012 Subaru Outback 2.5i with the Lineartronic CVT has reached 125 mph, and has 135k miles. I live in northern Wisconsin, so i need a good awd system and Subaru's symmetrical awd has proven to be worthy of this weather and the CVT doesn't suck much power away from the boxer 4. Today it snowed about 1 foot and the Subaru plowed right through the roads. But having 30 degree weather for a week with more snow on the way is not fun in April. The CVT has its pro's and con's, but it works for my family.

In plain English: it FEELS like it is accelerating quickly, but it is not necessarily doing so. To me, it seems like a more sensible idea to have a car that feels like it is NOT accelerating - maybe even feels like it is standing still, whilst it is actually accelerating quite quickly.

Wear, tear & stretching of belt will need to be replaced and just like a timing belt job it’s always better to change other parts in there while you’re changing that timing/transmission belt which is more money to spend! It’s great moving forward with new ideas but again it will cost money to maintain. Before you have your timing belt to worry about soon you’ll have a transmission belt to worry about also.

    The belt type CVT is crap!
    I had a 2018 Prius C and after getting up to highway cruising speed, as long as the load change was mild, it was ok.
    The problem is when you're cruising along and, for one reason or another, you have to let off the throttle completely and then get back into it.
    The engine screams like it isn't connected to anything while the vehicle continues to decelerate slowly!
    If you let off the throttle and begin to slowly increase the throttle, then it MIGHT grab and continue driving the output.
    I traded the 2018 Prius C for a 2021 Corolla only to find a similar problem!
    Going over mildly hilly roads about 40 mph with the cruise engaged, coming out of a valley, the engine accelerates to between 4000 and 5000 rpm while there is no drive fed to the output.
    I'm thinking that metal plate belt is being driven by the driveline sheave and is "floating" around the driving sheave without engaging with the driving sheave.
    I have had this happen multiple times at various speeds and find it very frustrating!
    I'm curious how well the E-CVT in my 2023 Prius LE will perform.

    dual direct and port injection for different engine loads? wow I have to trust Toyota engineers on this and wait and see. Increased Temperature control efficiency is also an important refinement for performance and fuel use. People always cry about change, but the best engineering always wins in the end. Many times consumers are actually crying about other things, when the engineers are simply solving problems within the constraints given to them by society and economics.

For those that want to constantly rev and takeoff and be rougher with the car than yeah a traditional trany works best, even though a manual is superior to an automatic in that respect. But cvts aren't usually made for high wear and acceleration. if you are reving to 2000 and holiding it till you get to speed, which is slower yes, you will have a good long life with the cvt using it like it was meant to. all yall arguing over which is better. neither, they are different

      Cvt is good for maintaining peak engine efficiency at continuous speed. Automatics last longest when shifted hard with minimal slippage. Manuals last longest when shifted gently. It's amazing to think that manuals are used for racing, automatics are made into slushomatics and CVT's are turned into a cross between automatic and manual.

The most reliable CVT's, such as Subaru/Fuji, use pull chain type of CVT (their chain is sourced from LuK, in Germany). I had a remarkable run with my Camry with a conventional gearbox and did look to buy a new Toyota but did not buy because of the CVT gearbox. We had a CVT in our Honda and it did suffer vibration and needed constant high cost servicing using special oil. I bought a VW Tiguan instead and although it does have an unusual gearbox, I believe it is more durable than a CVT. Sorry guys, I am certainly NOT convinced there is any value in these.

    Now there will be no space required by 4wd it the passengers zone, only 1 or 2 cables. So we could have wide seats again, big and wide storage room, 3x3 seats. And all of this will be without missing 4wd. And the main thing is the low gravity center and much more safety.

You can grind gears in a manual with generates greater friction which is less likely in a automatic. With automatic transmission advancements, they are easier and more reliable than manuals. But when automatics do fail, they are a lot more expensive.

If I was driving longer distances and had less traffic, I would probably opt for a manual as well 😀

    Okay this is how I see it when you lay into it w.o.t full throttle that the CVT doesn't try to shift and acts like a real CVT should otherwise it would be a slow turd trying to shift through fake gears, CVT transmissions are faster than manual or automatic transmissions if tuned right and since this uses a pump to control when it shifts it should have a race mode or regular CVT mode to keep it at the RPM that the engine makes the most torque for the fastest acceleration. The only thing I see it is good for is cruising to put you in a taller ratio for lower RPMs to get better MPG and if it shifts at w.o.t full throttle then it's a complete waste.

You can engage the simulated gears my shifting the gear lever into manual mode (left of drive I think).
