  • Have you wondered why you have to "scrub in" your new tires? Or what scrubbing in is? Or why you have to ride cautiously for the first 100 miles when you fit new tires?
Then this video is for you - AND you will learn the fun way to do it!
Every rider knows how dangerous new tyres are because of the protective wax that they are smeared with to allow them to be stored for long periods before sale. This wax reduces their grip dramatically which can lead to an accident if not scrubbed in before enthusiastic use.
Scrubbing in is simply using the tyre across its entire surface to scrub off the slippery protective wax to reveal the grippy rubber surface of the tyre.
Tyre shops often suggest that you ride cautiously for 100km/60 miles but who wants to spend 100km/60 miles sitting upright to scrub in new tyres?
Besides, it doesn't work - you will simply have unused slippery rubber on the sides of your tyres at the end of that 100km period. The bike needs to be leaned progressively more and more with gentle throttle inputs so that the tyres have been used to the edge to scub off that protective storage wax.
My preferred method is to find a twisty road and to ride it several times progressively leaning further on each pass using gentle braking and throttle inputs. This way, I find that I have scrubbed off all the protective wax and am scraping footpeg hero blobs within a handful of kilometres/miles - typically the day the tyres were fitted.
