2016. My first year in Dallas, my first QuakeCon. I went to QuakeCon for the first time all by myself. I was there to see this live in a room full of strangers. It was absolutely incredible. The nostalgia in 2023…. Overwhelming.
Yeah, if you look at it in the most superficial way possible, it may appear like that. Just like ten tall guys trying to throw a ball through a ring sounds rather dull, so why would anyone want to watch or play in the NBA? It's obvious that you never played quake duel. This in a fact a mental game, and what makes it so intense isn't only what you see on-screen, but also a decent amount of depth. However, in a time where everything in pop-culture and industry is being increasingly dumbed down and reduced to its superficial appearance, the original Quake franchise naturally lacks mass appeal. I am fine with that tho, to each their own. The other reason for Quake's inpopularity: It is too demanding for the vast majority of todays players. No joke here. Arena shooters are the absolute antithesis to casual gaming and skill compression (= high skill floor, low skill ceiling) and will therefore always be a hardcore niche genre. Also, lets be honest: QL is quite ugly for modern standards. And you already know about generic superficiality. Anyway, no one's obligerated to be non-superficial or non-casual. I sincerely like the franchise's community the way it is, small but caring. Quality over quantity.
It has nothing to do with skill level or requirements. The genre has lived its age and is substituted by other genres. Simple as that. UT 4, Quake Champions, Doom MP are not doing well and are an indication of it. The genre is dormant.
These players are absolutely better at pre-firing and predictions than most people, but if you play a shooter enough and get used to the maps and movement speed of characters, you can do it too.
This is the best display of skill I ever seen in my life before. I have never seen a more intense match up in any game ever.
