And almost nobody I know cares or even know about the game. I once had a discussion with a few people at a local LAN about how I thought the FPS scene was boring and casual compared to just 10 years ago. It's all CS:GO now and it just doesn't compare to the skill and mindset you need to do what these two just did in that grand final. They heavily disagreed and thought Quake was a boring game for spectators -- I should probably just show them this. One of the guys even said he didn't think Quake was very fast-paced... and he even watched the pro scene for a while and used to play Quake II years ago.
Well, if we go by mods like 'CPMA' then 'Q2-RO' aka 'InstaGib' destroys everything. The Hook is just lightning! So dunno about that "cpm is a bazillion times faster than" .... ;) //Former World Champion and best friend with Purri's mother. XOXO *FniZZ* ;) .. [URX]/[CyC]
***** instagib was a casual shit mod, just like extreme, and cpm is still fuckloads of times faster. I`ve got several world records on defrag in many different maps and both physics, have played q1/qw and over 30 mods in both q2 and q3, and cpm maps require yourself to handle movement and land a plasma gazboost at 5k ups while timing it with a fucking farshot double rox. Instant weapon switches added to the depth of combined strafejumping+air control+clipping+gbs+obs and all its variations+fbs makes cpm insanely fast the better you get, and is to this day the holy grail of the fps elitism that killed the genre off, having an uncapped skill ceiling that throws any newcomer off

This has to be the absolute highlight of how professional and extremely high skilled the Quake pros really are. This is the most intense Duel finals I've ever witnessed (been watching them since the days Fatality was still around) and I have to say it's really appropriate how the series was left behind, given this was the last Quake Live tournament, it was a legendary showdown. Legendary plays from both players. Mad respect for this match.
I've said this on an old Qaukecon video.... I'm a noob to the Quake games but I truly love watching these tourneys. The meta game is so amazing, it's something other shooters just doesn't have. I have to give credit to Rapha, Evil, Cooler, Toxic for truly showing the game at peak performances. I love this game and the community.
Dahang was always my personal favourite; cypher and cooler edge him out for game and rapha for strategy but his playstyle is so fun to watch and balls out. there are almost too many excellent players to mention. Zero4, the guy who mentored Rapha, had some insane duels with him on vertical vengeance back in the day.
Absolutely fantastic finals. ddk's and zoot's emotions after that plot twist on the 9th overtime were immense, histerical, brilliant. And you know that they are not forcing themselves to emote like many other commentators do, Quake commentators are genuine in that regard. Ddk's breath was literally taken away, he became red as a tomato after that epic moment lol P.S.: evil deserved to finally win QuakeCon and earn Russia its first QuakeLive world title. I feel like this time rapha was simply considerably more lucky. Look at how many times he ran away with 10 hp, crazy. Although evil made a couple of painful mistiming mistakes on the last map. Close amazing games. But after being home for top level Quake for so many years, we and evil still don't have the title :(
I feel for evil. He has certainly the best combat skills IMO, and he's long due the title. But it's no coincidence that Rapha keeps winning him, as he did in the winners finals and in the group stage. Rapha just plays it tactically better. With a little better discipline, Evil would be absolutely unbeatable.
Commiserations! I think Rapha just has a few more real strengths as a player. It may have looked like he got lucky running away, but at the same time if he had been fazed by the situation, his reflexes etc. may have slowed him down just those extra 10 hp. Evil reminds me of Tox. A machine. In the interviews Rapha shows emotions at least. That's why I have a difficult time cheering for Evil as opposed to someone like Base or Cooller. Also why do we have to make it about nations? That's so gay, but I know nationalism is a big thing in Russia. (and to be exact Russia has titles in TDM) But yeah best finals ever...
Yeah rapha has always been the most complete player IMHO. His positional play has often got him out of tight situations and gotten victories over slightly superior aimers. Agree with you guys though, sad there can only be one winner
This was the most intense fucking final, I've ever seen! I wish this game had the same amount of players CSGO does. Would be the best thing in the online fps ever :D
This is one of the most stunning finals I've ever seen...many congratulations to the perfect executor Evil and to the True Quake Champion rapha. Cooller, Cypher, where were you? Without them Quake has a different taste... However, if this is the last great QL lan, then this final can be considered a beautiful epitaph of a deep, pure, beautiful game.
Cooller already made his comeback in 2015 I think. That was truly amazing, watching him perform in the smaller leagues and going so far in quakecon. Story of that year. Too bad the format kind of ruined it.
harrythedevil that's true. Cooller already made his comeback. Now that the professional e-sport history of this game is ended, watching these matches of QL from an "historical" point of view make me think how high Rapha, Evil and Cypher set the skill ceiling. But Cooller adapted himself to 4 different Quake games now, he was and still is a top contender in every one of these games, always battling in finals and in the later stages of tournaments, long after the moment he was the undisputed number 1. He became a top contender in Quake 3 in 2002 and still is a top contender in Quake Champions in 2017, after being Dreamhack champion of Overwatch, after many, many finals and victories in QL, Q4, Q3. Rapha and Evil reached an incredibly high level of QL in this final, but still I'm similary impressed by Cooller's ability to adapt to different games and play at the very top level in each of them. That said, I'm convinced that none player in history has accomplished what Rapha has. 5 Quakecons, 2 IEM world championship, ESWC, and so on...
There's no flashiness in those games. Movement and physics are much more sterile, allowing for very little expression like Quake allows. That alone makes Quake such a superior game to play tactically, and to watch! I mean, props to pro CS players; I support gaming and e-sports across the board, but nothing touches a pro Quake match, especially between the likes of Rapha and Evil!
Quake takes more skill in everything. CS initially got popular because it was a casual friendly alternative to quake and UT at the time. Thanks to the de-emphasis on reflexes and the added emphasis on camping.. or "slow paced tactics" as you like to call it. CS was the original dudebro shooter.
Boner Patrol still CS atleast requirs some skill(even though its mostly camping, but still need skill to aim atleast), but cod is just a playground for horny teenagers who dont even come to play. Just name yourself a girl and see the obscenity those shitheads spew out, it's sad that quake champions want to attract little shitheads like that. I just hope it will be a REAL quake, not some dumbed down BS.

I think we need to make a petition ye. But not only petition. I think Quake3 (Quake Live) must be on Olympiad 2020 or smth :) Quake Live its not a game any more - its become a life.
quake being on the olympics would be great to see but i think if a videogame ever will be played on the olympocs then it will be league of legends or csgo i mean one of theae games where the companys are pushing so hard on for the money
This makes the learning curve of a dark souls game look like nursery ... It's a literal shock to the system when you first play and someone is literally beating you down for hours on end ... Then you stem the tide and it feels like you've conquered a nation ... You turn the tide and you feel like you've conquered a planet , there is literally no other game that compares it's for masochistics 👍
It's still pretty active on steam. Average of 300 active players per month, so its not too hard finding servers. I personally suck at duel so always play clan arena haha!
Quake was big part of my life from quake 2 to quake 3 cpm and ra3 to quake live. I don't play games anymore since my values have changed over time, but that's life... There is no other game or sport that requires such impeccable skill. I have never had that admire to any person but the pros in quake scene. Even though my field of work requires a lot dedication. I was one of the best in niche parts of quake such as pql ctf but this, the level these players are in the purest form of fps gaming is just phenomenal.
nuttiest final i've ever seen, i had to stay up till 5 am to watch and i jumped out of my seat when evil won elder 10/10, considering that this may be the last quakecon with QL, it felt so good
What an absolute gem. I must've woken up the neighbors more than once while watching this because I couldn't contain my emotions. And I am normally about as emotional as Rapha. The amount of drama in this final tramples any pro sports game that I've ever seen.
I've seen rapha multiple times on Furious Heights at the end of a match in that corner at the MH. Positions himself perfectly to survive and win it. Incredibly composed. Great way to finish off QL.
This is perhaps the greatest Quake duelling I've ever seen. Brilliant play by both Rapha and Evil. Great commentary too. Very inspirational to this only fair Q3 player.
im a total noob when it comes to quake (played like 20h) but every once in a while i come back and watch a pro match just to be amazed how much skill you need and you smart these guys are playing. love it and would like to get into that game more
The first map here was crucial (not that the others were less important), Evil was playing some sublime Quake and had everything under his control because score was on his side, he was leading 2-0. He should have secured that map and tie the series on 1-1. It's the only map in this series where the result was for a lot of time mainly in his hands. But at 11:35 (4:57 in game) he should have gone aggressive and finish rapha who was very low in stack. Red was not respawning anytime soon and Evil could have taken the Mega after the kill or heavily damage a rapha without weapons if after the eventual frag he respawned in that area and stole the mega left by Evil. In most cases the result would have been 3-0 for Evil with a very high chance to mantain full map control. Instead he has gone for the secure and passive choice and that was the first serious error in my opinion after 4 minutes of excellent play. And then at 14:37 (7:55 in game) he failed to deliver a lot of damage to rapha who stole the Mega and then got full map control very easily. After that Evil went too passive and rapha had the possibility to pull of the miracle and he succeeded. Evil simply shouldn't never have left that possibility to exist. I know that in Elder something similar happened at inverteded sides but in that map no player had full control of the situation for 8 minutes. In the last three maps both players had more of less their chances, but the first in my opinion was lost by Evil after that start, with that couple of errors. And this is why rapha was so strong in this game. He punished errors like no one, he was capable of using the most little things to his advantage. The greatest mind to ever play this game, along with Cooller maybe.
This match up was flippen intense!!!!!! all the come back with in a few seconds to spare were monumental! amazing match! even the fact that they played 5 round was bananas! great stuff! cant wait for 2017!
Well, I can clearly say if Quake Live was association football Rapha would be Italy and Evil would be The Netherlands. Watching Evil's play and rail connections is lovely but at the end defense gets the title as Rapha did most of the times. Rapha deserved the championship but that does not stop me enjoying Evil'e play much more.
If someone failed to understand the meaning, Italy is playing defensive long ball crap, where The Netherlands is playing offensive football. Rapha is defensive, running and hiding all the time, where Evil is more like The Netherlands, attacking like a boss.
Shame that Q3/Live is not an esport platform, it was more intense than any CS:GO final. There should be one more zero on those cheques, to properly reflect their class.
It's the exact same game except you don't have to install a thousand mods to play competetively, and it makes approximately 200% more sense for newcomers. The only reason to hate on QL is it splits the AFPS playerbase even further, any other critique is just utterly petty.
I'm confused about the format of the grand finals. I thought this was a best of three. rapha won for first map, the evil won the second two, so I thought that was the end of it. However there was a fourth map. Why? How did rapha with when the score was 2-2?
It was a best of five. Prior matches were best of 3, but usually you can expect a 'grand final' to have a few more games in them. You already answered your own question-- There was another map after 2-2, that means there were a total of 5 rounds, it was a best of 5.
But if it was a best of five, the winner needs to win three of the five matches. However, the video showed rapha winning two matches, and evil winning two matches. No one won three.
I've skimmed through the video, and the first map begins with Rapha actually having one point to begin with. This is likely due to him having come in from the Winner's bracket. Some games/tournaments will give winner bracket folk a point, sort of how like in Smash's EVO, the losers bracket finalist needs to essentially win the first bo5 for a reset into the next bo5. So, there's an earlier video where Rapha beats Evil in a bo3, so I assume that's the case. I was confused at first, because for the first few minutes of the first map it said 0-0.
I was drinking tea while watching first map of grand final. 2 seconds before overtime i almost choked to death with liquid and spat it all over my monitor
yo, can someone plz explain why quake is so "skillful." im genuinely curious. i recently started watching competative footage and have no idea wtf is going on. Is it because of its fast movement? is it because they dont aim down gun-sights? Im not trying to figure out whats going on, i can learn that by watching more. what differs quake from others skill wise? what should i look out for?
That fluid movement you see, takes years of practice (im not even exaggerating). It would take you countless days just to do that simple megahealth jump they do so consistently. Item control is another crucial skill required to be successful in duel. They don't see the timers of items, that we spectators can see. They have to time all the items by heart and remember when they spawn. They need to anticipate when opponent takes the powerup and estimate when will it spawn and how much hp/armor would the opponent have, so they know when it's best to engage in combat. Whole map control is based on knowing where can you do unanswered damage, thus you also need to know what weapons does your opponent hold and try to control weapon spots too. Then you will have to learn all the angles, all the spam positions how to spam, where to spam, how to get aim accuracy with hitscans like LG, how to exit teleport and shoot in defined angle etc. etc. etc. When you combine all that, it is overwhelming demand of skill to be called the best. Try the game :)
I remember playing against shane (rapha) in middle school and high school. I played so inconsistently it threw him off lol. But man how he kept at it and just keeps winning these things. 5 time champ and 2 straight, broke the curse, and many more to come. watching his play in the finals was such a roller-coaster. he normally doesn't have that much of an issue when he gets a lead but evil finds sick rails and his LG is always on point that it makes Rapha have to play even more defensively. some people call his miraculous escapes as luck but he knows his outs if the battles go south. that is skill, perseverance and overall what makes him the best player in the world. that being said, evil played his best ever against Rapha despite some costly mistakes that Rapha capitalized on. well done
That's the greatest thing i've ever seen, I'm crying. I truly feel sorry for everyone who doesn't play quake and can't appreciate this masterpiece.
Even if you hated gaming and were aged 74 you would still love and appreciate that game

You can see it again right now
I don't even play quake and this was entertaining af!
Lam2J You should try it
This makes the learning curve of a dark souls game look like nursery ...
I was one of the best in niche parts of quake such as pql ctf but this, the level these players are in the purest form of fps gaming is just phenomenal.
nuttiest final i've ever seen, i had to stay up till 5 am to watch and i jumped out of my seat when evil won elder
10/10, considering that this may be the last quakecon with QL, it felt so good
just came back to this replay after this years qcon. and i already miss the old times with real quake :/
I just have watched this final again and i so miss those times 😭 so nostalgia .
"maybe it's a good sign, Quake 5, Quake Champions coming up!" - Rapha .. I mean, he said it and here he is years later - dominating in QC!
Simply amazing skills. Nothing compares when it comes to FPS.
Congrats to both Evil and Rapha, absolutely amazing final!!
I am so glad this turned up in my recommended feed. What an insane series o.O
What an absolute gem. I must've woken up the neighbors more than once while watching this because I couldn't contain my emotions. And I am normally about as emotional as Rapha. The amount of drama in this final tramples any pro sports game that I've ever seen.
Elder was such an epic game to see live, what an amazing final this was!
Here 2023 to watch this masterpiece of match
I've seen rapha multiple times on Furious Heights at the end of a match in that corner at the MH. Positions himself perfectly to survive and win it. Incredibly composed.
Great way to finish off QL.
This is perhaps the greatest Quake duelling I've ever seen. Brilliant play by both Rapha and Evil. Great commentary too. Very inspirational to this only fair Q3 player.
Evil deserved to win so much, it hurts, but still the best quake final I've ever seen.
177k views throughout 7 years??? So much people missing out this the most epic quake match😮
im a total noob when it comes to quake (played like 20h) but every once in a while i come back and watch a pro match just to be amazed how much skill you need and you smart these guys are playing. love it and would like to get into that game more
Quake is life
quake is love
Quake is bae!! 😍😍
Quake is impressive! Quake is excellent!
Quake is life.
Quakelive is... megahealth?
Fucking amazing. Breath-taking stuff. So happy I got into Quake back in the 90s.
I have seen many finals, but this is one of the best!
That presentation at the end, just sad for such a masterful finals :(
Evil was drunk, his fans were drunk, I'm drunk now and everyone in russia is drunk. Rapha took advantage of it like always.
What do you mean advantage?
Evil had the advantage because he was drunk.
He was in his element.
@@lamosos bruh the Op is clearly being sarcastic..
@@HollowRick There is no necromancer class in quake, go away.
@@lamosos ?
What are the maps they were playing on? Want to find them in Quake Live
DDK, Zoot, thanks for the great commentary :) Long live Quake my friends :)
sick comeback on elder by evil, really didn't think he'd take it
!! epic
Best game I've ever seen.
Best finals ever! I watched it 4am local time and I don't regret it at all :)
who wants Quake Live back ?
This match up was flippen intense!!!!!! all the come back with in a few seconds to spare were monumental! amazing match! even the fact that they played 5 round was bananas! great stuff! cant wait for 2017!
What a great show, really miss those times. Too bad Quake lost most of its tactical mind games with QC
One of the most intense games I've seen, oh dear.
"I'm having a heart attack."
I can relate to that.
This think kept me glued to it and going a few seconds back to admire a frag too many times.
Still the greatest game ever.
Thanks guys. Probably the most entertaining final ever!!
no 1080p??
The score in this match is 2 to 2, so why did rapha win?
I don’t really understand this game, but when evil tied the score 4-4 it looked pretty hype
wow..... This is the best match up I have ever SEEN, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time!!!!!!
Well quake 3 player have sure improved over the years, I remember WCG from back in 2003, the skill level nowadays is insane.
Why is this map not already remade into Quake Champions?
THAT LG AT 30:30 HOLY SHIT
"OH THE LGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG"
Incredible comebacks from the greatest players, amazing! :)
Shame that Q3/Live is not an esport platform, it was more intense than any CS:GO final. There should be one more zero on those cheques, to properly reflect their class.
best grand finals I've ever seen, bar none
I am wondering how hal_9000 or chris ska would fair in these tournaments.
Wut? I didn't know they're still doing pro Q3 tourneys. I loved this game
This is Quake Live tourney (Improved version of the game based on Q3).
Improved..... xDDD
"improved" lmfao
It's the exact same game except you don't have to install a thousand mods to play competetively, and it makes approximately 200% more sense for newcomers. The only reason to hate on QL is it splits the AFPS playerbase even further, any other critique is just utterly petty.
This might be the best duel I've seen, fucking excellent play to both players.
9 ROUND OF OVERTIME REALLY I MEAN COME ON
How can you deposit that kinda cheque? Pretty sure ATM's don't come as big these days...
respect for the king Rapha but great duel of Evil
This match has inspired me to buy QL. Sure, Korea sucks in terms of opponents to play against but ah well...
It's a free game
Try Chinese server
not in Korea apparently
as long as you enjoy yourself ... who cares!
not anymore its not free i think :D
I think about this match whenever I think of QuakeCon 😭
Amazing final! But wtf with the video? It starts with map 2 without sound. Big minus for this.
Congrats rapha.
Miss cypher((
Are there still tourneys going on QL? players like rapha an cypher? and stermy?!
There are still tournaments in QL but not official ones. Rapha and Cypher compete in Quake Champions now until maybe when Diabotical comes out.
What map they were playing on?
I think Evil must've come from the loser's bracket? And would have to win 3 to make up?
I think you guys are right about that. Admittedly, the casters could have clarified that a little bit going into the match.
can the players see the mega, yellow red etc timers or just the time when theyve been picked up ?
I was drinking tea while watching first map of grand final. 2 seconds before overtime i almost choked to death with liquid and spat it all over my monitor
which version of quake makes the "huh" grunt sound when the player is jumping?
Greatest gaming duel of all time?
yo, can someone plz explain why quake is so "skillful." im genuinely curious. i recently started watching competative footage and have no idea wtf is going on.
Loved it, best series. Enough said. Thx for upload!
I remember playing against shane (rapha) in middle school and high school. I played so inconsistently it threw him off lol. But man how he kept at it and just keeps winning these things. 5 time champ and 2 straight, broke the curse, and many more to come. watching his play in the finals was such a roller-coaster. he normally doesn't have that much of an issue when he gets a lead but evil finds sick rails and his LG is always on point that it makes Rapha have to play even more defensively. some people call his miraculous escapes as luck but he knows his outs if the battles go south. that is skill, perseverance and overall what makes him the best player in the world. that being said, evil played his best ever against Rapha despite some costly mistakes that Rapha capitalized on. well done
Great analysis. Spot on
The "Battle of Stalingrad" of gaming
That is what esport is about...
Best set of Quake period.
1st map gamesound completly missing
2nd map gamesound >150ms delay
other quakecon videos, both players simultaneously.
good job soundguy !
Much love DDK
Long time no see
