After saying you're not a fan of carrots, I laughed so hard when you ladled the stew into your bowl and took a big chunk of carrot out of your bowl and put it back into the pot 😂😂😂
I've gotta be honest, your, "stay with me.." always just sounds so genuine and comforting. We absolutely appreciate your videos, Dave! Especially in the outdoor kitchen.
I can't help but admire a Renaissance man. Dave you have more talent than people have sense! The cooking series is captivating, fun and extensively useful!
I always mix my finely chopped beef chunks into a large resealable bag with flour and lots of seasoning . Close and mix , then dump it into a hot frying pan with a good olive oil. Easy clean up and adds soooo much flavour. After your meat and veg have stewed for a long time , add barley . Its an amazing thickener.
pro tip corn starch used the same way works well for beef gravy instead of flour which adds a taste try it out sometime! also side note love the camp cooking vids keep it up!
Truly love your cooking and eating videos Dave, I like seeing your new recipes and innovative ways of cooking keep them coming thank you for all that you do
I'm enjoying this series of cooking videos. I have the small Pathfinder bushpot and it has seen lots of use. I've not used it for baking yet, but I want to try that. One of those small racks is on my next Self Reliance Outfitters order list.
Brother Dave, I must say you have spoiled us with your recent videos. My steady diet of beanie weenies has greatly improved over the past couple of weeks. Commissary stew has different meaning to different folks, but to the normies they will find out it's good eating if they can make it past the first three weeks lol. God Bless, pass the biscuits and keep the content rolling!
I carry stock cubes as part of my mess kit, learned that with my scout troop way back when. We use to use them to make hot drinks and for flavouring our stews, later in the army i learned to carry tabasco original red hot pepper sauce as well for flavouring MRE's between the two pretty much anything becomes edible sort of. There is one method i find works well if you have a good vaccum flask, we would make stew in the morning put it in a flask and eat it later for lunch , using the retained heat to finish slow cooking the food. Now when hiking with family i have acouple of 1.8lt flasks which we put a stew in and have it for supper when we return to base, it just needs a reheat rather than 30 minutes of simmering saving alot of time and fuel. You need to add more potato's and onions and grte the carrot so it disappears.
I know you ain't a fancy chef, but a good cook. One thing I've learned which has really sped things up is having all of the ingredients chopped, minced, sliced and ready to go before you start, making it idiot proof. I'm an electrician. I really really like idiot proof preparation, because at times even super smart people can forget or otherwise do idiotic things. I have and will probably continue to do so.
If your traveling light and don't have an oven, just mix the biscuit dough with a little more water and drop spoonfuls into the stew for dumplings. That will also thicken the stew a bit. They float on top so put on the lid to cook them. Love a good camp stew.
Dave your my bud to go to im a 65 year old country boy from Dayton ohio been all over the state I live in ocala fl now since 1990 were you said you lived in Florida I will be up their soon I will be busy I wish I could meet you but dont know if I will have time I still bush craft and hike and camp love are rivers I'm doing what I loved to do as a kid a teenager spent a lot of time in ohio in small caves and exploring found out latter my older freinds decuved these places before me. It's great to see that their more people in the usa are like us I'm not giving up I'm staying country savior keep up one of my favorite channel your mentor ronnie
Glad you expanded it past beef at the end, while I love it, it takes a bit of cooking and if I'm looking for a shorter cook then chicken (or sausages) are handy. Chicken in particular lends itself to more chilli and garlic flavours which work for me. Dumplings are another option instead of having to bake too, assuming your pot is big enough to have them, not always the case for me. Thanks for sharing the vid.
lol...had to chuckle when Dave rejected that carrot from the ladle. Needs more carrots!!! You could have pieced up the left over biscuit mix and tossed them into the stew for dumplings. Wild greens would be good too. Thanks for sharing.
A great substitute for all purpose flour is a gravy flour called "Wondera".Use the same measured amount. This flour comes in a container, similar to bread crumbs. Additionally you can use "corn starch", or "arrow root" to thicken your stews, gravy's. and "rue's", but flour is best for stew. I've mentioned my small bread pans several times. This exact bisket mix will make 2 of what I call bisket loaves. The bread pans will fit the bush pot well. The loaf will bake in about 12 minutes in a 400 degree oven, so adjust time for the bush pot, OH ya, lightly oil or grease the pan's to prevent sticking. ;=)
Make some skillet bread for your next dish. Just ate a piece from yesterday's leftover. Cup of all purpose flour Goodly tablespoon of baking powder Pinch of salt Optional pinch of sugar Plain water to mix Wetter than biscuits, but dryer than pancakes. Oil your skillet, brown on one side, turn it and brown on the other Just like a big thick fluffy pancake except a loaf of skillet bread The cannucks call that bannock
try cornstarch instead of flour if you haven't already it's great thickener and it doesn't bring any of that flowery taste not to mention it's gluten free for those who are sensitive
oh yeah gravy Master makes a great thickener also but I know this is a recipe reminiscent civil war.. please don't take anything I say as negative they're just me thinkin out loud... love the videos
After saying you're not a fan of carrots, I laughed so hard when you ladled the stew into your bowl and took a big chunk of carrot out of your bowl and put it back into the pot 😂😂😂
Same 😂 I saw him fiddling around with the carrots. It’s funny Dave of all people not liking vegetables
I did grin
Good stuff 😆Personally love me some carrots! Cooked well they taste almost sweet.
Probably a necessary flavor component
Hahaha
Frog egg soup? 🤠👍🏻
Extra carrot in stew? 😝👎🏻
I've seen Dave do many things that would make a lesser man think twice, but I do have to admit I smiled when he picked the carrot out of his plate.
I've gotta be honest, your, "stay with me.." always just sounds so genuine and comforting. We absolutely appreciate your videos, Dave! Especially in the outdoor kitchen.

Always enjoy a hearty stew. Biscuits is just a bonus!

Great video enjoyed it! Thanks!
hey Dave got to agree with you 100% on the carrets keep it up man.
When baking in a pot like that put you some rocks in to add thermal mass. It helps maintain the heat with less fuel.

Man, that was cool. Greetings from Belarus! ✌️

The camp cook would surely have some type of stock on the go as a base for soups .

Chef 👨🍳 Dave and his Cat 🐱 assistant strike again!
Not gonna lie Dave that looks pretty good. I like the coloring in the juice . Looks tasty !
The Southern version of that would probably be a pork based stew with sweet potatoes and definitely greens of some sort.

Really interested in these Civil War recipes… I’m sure Dave’s run across a few late 1700’s/revolutionary era cooking techniques and recipes as well.
