Now I just dump it in and eyeball it. Lol.

I'm thoroughly enjoying these videos on how to prepare bees for winter! I was a little behind schedule last night, but I watched your interview with Dr. David Beck shortly after the live stream had ended. I enjoyed it very much, because he always displays the same enthusiasm and passion about bees as you express in your videos. I'm looking forward to the next episode in this series!!!

I have friend who I've known for a long time. I've made some mistakes as long ago as a few day ago that a reasonable person would say are completely idiotic. I step back and totally agree with that assessment. I'm feeding my bees with the 1 to 1 and he has been doing 2 to 1. I possibly checked his hives at night to see how his bees are doing. I clearly have far more bees than he has in his hives. I'm thinking i have too many bees.
Using the 1 to 1 with all the other stuff David uses, might be the only good thing I have done this year.
Ohh, my mite count is zero percent. Doing that monthly test and treating has gotten me to zero.
My wife was all emotional about me killing 300 bees every month, but it was worth it.

David, I did this for my bees last winter. Not only did I have almost no dead bees in the spring, but all 3 hives came out of winter strong and ready to go. I also used a winter feeding system similar to yours (you were sold out) and it worked beautifully. Thank you for such great advice.

I've always done this since I started bees, and while I lost hives this summer from swarming and bad queen situation, I have always gotten my hives through the winter very healthy taking your advice and the Burns Feeding System and candy boards. Also, just fun to take a very safe peek through the screen into the hive as I change out the jars.

Do you feed this formula with a super still on? If so won't they store it if the frames aren't capped? If you take the super off to feed, what do you do with it? Do you put it back on at a certain point? This may be worth making a whole video on... even the master beekeepers I talk to simply reply by saying "yep... that's a classic dilemma!"

David i have been feeding my bees the "secret recipe" for at least 3 weeks now. Yesterday I had one of my hives swarm. I found the swarm in a tree close by about 40Ft up in a tree. I could not reach them. The bees love the recipe but my question is, is the queen laying too many eggs this time of year because of the recipe and they swarmed, leaving little bees for winter. BTW love your channel.

    • @rstlr01

It is a delicate dance that you must be doing hive inspections to know the next move. Probably should not be feeding if the Queen is running out of room to lay.

I live in Quebec Canada. I am very interested in your idea of feeling 1:1 in the fall to make more winter bees. As things will shut down for the winter up here in the next few weeks, if I feed 1:1 now and not all of the 1:1 is used to make winter bees, will there be an issue if the bees are not able to dry down the 1:1 before winter really sets in? Or to put it another way, if the 1:1 just sits in the comb uncapped all winter could this be problematic for the bees?

Thanks so much for putting together these great videos. I've watched many of your videos and followed your advice by buying your honey-be-healthy and ammino booster, but I have one question that I did not see addressed in your videos. Are you saying that we need to feed the colonies continuously during Sep/Oct/Nov? If the bees consume 1/2 gallon of 1:1 sugar water every 48 hours, I will be feeding each hive 7-8 gallons of sugar water each month. That's around 25-30 lb. of sugar for each hive every month. With my 5 hives, I will be consuming about 400 lb. of sugar for fall feeding of Sep/Oct/Nov. Did I get that right? Do you feed your bees that much sugar or how do know when to moderate feeding?

I have a question David, I tested for mites, count seemed to be toward a high count of mites. I applied a formicpro treatment. I have a screened bottom board and closed with inspection board and cardboard to seal the screen for treatment. After 2 days pulled cardboard clean off for a count inspection and replaced to keep screen sealed. I counted appox 500 adult mites appox 30,000 bees. The math resulting 1.7% mite count. Is this a normal threshold or a high threshold

    • @beek
      @beek  10 місяців тому

I’m not sure I understand but it seems you opened the screen bb too soon. Keep it closed for the duration of the treatment and many mites will be killed and drop to the bottom board. I wait about 7-14 days after treatment to test again. Otherwise if I do it right after treatment im just counting dead mites.

I live in NC and am getting my first bees April 2024. I bought your Honey B Kind board and you say that bees will quit using it under 50 degrees. But our average temperature in January is 51 degrees. Can I put your honey b kind board over the candy board so the bees will have a choice of food? But take the bottle off under 35 degrees to keep the jar from freezing. Would there be a problem with this configuration?

    • @beek

I Tim, thanks for your order. It’s called a Winter Bee Kind. You might be confused. The Winter Bee Kind is for cold deep winter temps below 50 (f). The Burns Feeder (liquid) is for temps above 50 (f). I would not recommend using them both at the same time. Thanks

I ordered the items for the feeding mixture. Problem is the pollen doesn’t dissolve and just plugs up the drip holes. Others have commented having the same issue. Also the pollen ferments which causes pressure in the feeding jars which then pushes out the liquid. I stopped adding the pollen and the fermentation problem went away.
