- The Texas defense shuts down Texas A&M, with the help of a injured James Brown and true freshman RB by the name of Ricky Williams. The Horns win the last Southwest Conference game ever, as well as their 25th SWC crown.
You can say whatever you want about Musberger but this was a beautifully called game.
the last game of the southwest conference was U of Houston at Rice. They delayed the start to make sure it was the last game. The best half time show I ever saw, thanks MOB
Ricky Williams absolutely owned the aggies. I think he had about 800 yards against them in 4 games.
And probably 100 knee breaking stiff-arms!!! Hahahaha!
And yet the shorthorns digressed after this season. Williams never saw 10 wins again. The last 11 seasons is a repeat of akers/mcwilliams/mackovic. texas is garbage.
@@brandonvandelden7972 false, agroloid. Texas won the first Big 12 Championship the following season. A&M hasn't even BEEN to a conference championship this century, much less won one. Talk about garbage, that's pathetic.
@@miketumulty6836 I didn't say they hadn't won a conference championship ASS HOLE. READ IT AGAIN. I said they never saw 10 wins again with Williams in the backfield. And I didn't say one damn thing about a&m. READ IT AGAIN. texas still lost 5 games in 1996. They WASTED ricky williams. Just like they WASTED ehlinger. texas is garbage.
It was. The Rice-UH game took place later that day at Rice Stadium. I went to that game and Rice had a giant kegger in honor of the occasion. Not that they need a reason.
And he'd sprained his other ankle during the game. Playing on that Astroturf, in those conditions, against the Wrecking Crew, when we hadn't beaten them in College Station since '83. Just absolute guts by Brown. I hated the Ags SO much back then (still do, but that level was unparalleled).
The '96 Big XII title game may have been a "bigger" win, but this game was the turning point when the Longhorns took back control of the state. It was a long 10 year period, but it feels worth it now!
Im not a fan of either A&M or UT however this was a man's man of a football game. Tough hitting, good defense , good running, The SWC's (r.i.p.) last game defined a great and tough conference.
This wasnt the last game. Rice and Houston was.
Like I told the aggie sitting at the other end of the bar, that day... "SWC Champions, FOREVER!".. 16-6, BABY..
Goodbye to A&M takes on a whole new meaning
Right, after the train rolls over them!!
Westbrook was the best Cornerback in UT history...Nice video...I forgot bout the sack ff and recovery...
I’ve recreated the 1979 college football conferences including the SWC teams replacing the Big 12 it’s so freaking fun.
I thought the last SWC game was between Houston and Rice.
I believe this video is supposed to mean the last SWC championship game
Almost forgot - I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that James Brown played an absolutely heroic game with a severe high ankle sprain. He couldn't walk for two weeks after the game.
TONY BRACKENS!!
chris carter!!
bryant westbrook!!
brent musberger!!
what a great day!! nothing like thanksgiving in TEXAS!
so long swc. I personally believe the creation of the big 12 was the greatest thing that ever happened to TEXAS! it took us from being on the same level of teams such as houston, rice, smu, and tcu to being on the same level as teams like nebraska and oklahomo. now we are a national powerhouse! I believe U.T. was the program that benefited the most from the big 12.
Thus began the Brent/Ricky love fest. Pause it at 3:46 for a glimpse of what was to come. Sweet vid.
What years did Bryant Westbrook played for the HORNS? That guy can hit good. Good Memoires riviarly of the Lone Star Game UT vs Texas A&M
Ricky and Westbrook changed UT style of athletes that came there after them
That sack by Westbrook on Pulig would have been a 15 yard roughing the passer call today....easily
For sure!
That wasn't the last SWC game. Rice-Baylor was the last game, played that night. I was there.
True. But it should have been.
Houston @ Rice was the last SWC game actually
I think Justin McLemore was playing his 9th season or something for Texas.
This wasn't the last SWC game. UH-Rice was the last SWC game.
UH-Rice? Who cares about them?
Poor aggies, Texas laid the wood on those chumps that day! HOOK'EM
How did Ricky Williams get out of the State? John Robinson did not recruit him hard enough, with Keyshawn Johnson USC would have won the National Championship that year.
Can't get over the fact that UT and A&M won't play each other in football until maybe 2019. (Unless they match up in a bowl game.) I grew up watching this game every year. What a shame.
I know, I miss the Aggies losing most of them!!
I heard they moved to the kickoff of Houston at Rice to later that afternoon so that could be the last game LOL
Run Ricky Run
that sack by Westbrook would have gotten him banned by the NCAA nowadays
Lol, he runs right past their defense and gets a touch down then one of the spirits congratulates him by knocking him on his ass.
Who's the silver spur that trips Ricky after that first td?
When was the horse-collar tackle deemed illegal, cause I saw at least three of them, BLATANTLY not called...
Moral victories are for chumps. Don't ever forget 27-25 either after all the trash-talking by aggys fans assuring a win against Texas one last time. LMAO! Hook em'.
@chadwell601 and after all these years UH will be back in a major conference come 2013...it will be the Big East, but I am hoping they will join the Big 12 one day.
LogoAttitude damn my guy...u was way off 😭
Vermeil sounds like Lee Corso in this video
Westbrook played from 1993-1996
man if lovell pinkney would have stayed his senior season he would have been a beast and texas woukd have destroyed the wannabes by more than 20
Weak. Poor aggys always looking for a moral victory after a Texas whipping of the aggys.
lol, Lee Corso doing color.
Why don't you just leave Arkansas in the SEC and call it the Texas Conference : )
@neoconretard it became a one team conference. Texas dominated revenue-wise.
Revenue sharing meant that Texas and Texas A&M never really dominated like they should. Everybody was falling behind the rest of the country, Texas by itself was way too small of a media market to support an entire 8 team conference by 1995 and by then the NFL had reduced the once large fanbases of TCU, SMU, and Rice to nothing. It was no longer viable and everybody had to move on.
