Wow! Oklahoma clearly won that game! That was a fumble that OU recovered deep in Texas territory!! And clearly an interception on the deflection in the end zone!! Unbelievable!!
22:54 Upon further review the ball came loose before the ball carrier was down. Oklahoma football. 25:12 Upon further review the defender possessed the ball in bounds resulting in a touchback. Oklahoma ball on the 20. Timeout on the field. I was a junior in high school watching this and remembering how pissed Barry Switzer was afterwards.
For those talking about the OU punters knee touching the ground. There was no legal procedure called on the play that kills the play so the play is dead and the penalty is assessed
Even though I can't stand either of these schools lol I can appreciate this style of play ,the grit toughness and down right rivalry I miss this style of football
Believe this was the game where Barry Switzer wore a "Beat Texas" hat on the sidelines because of all the rain, and didn't realize that he had worn it until afterwards....LOl
After the field goal you look at the two teams Texas players are clapping and jumping up and down Oklahoma players are looking like they lost. Kind of tells you the mindset of the two teams
I was never so pissed off in my life over any game in any sport as I was after this one. To have the game won twice on the final drive, a clear fumble recovered by OU and then the interception in the end zone, and be completely missed by that incompetent officiating crew! I was 17 at the time and I remember it very well. Thank God for instant replay!
Lifetime longhorn here. Been watching every TX/OK game since 1966. That was the most controversial play in rivalry history. I gotta admit I thought it was an interception but the zebras said no. But l told my dad it was a bad call we got lucky. That game was played in a downpour. But what people don't remember is that the stadium clock stopped working and Fred Akers didn't know how much time was left. Looking back it was the right call we were fortunate to end up in a tie. The most bitter games in rivalry history ended up in a tie the other being 1976. But it's been 37 years and I laugh that sooner fans STILL haven't gotten over it 😂
I remember watching this game as a 8 year old, so intrigued by how it was raining in Dallas . Thought it was actually raining outside our apartment, while it was sunny out.
Sad story on the 2 OU DBs involved in that should-have-been interception. Andre Johnson & Keith Stanberry were involved in a car wreck a couple of weeks after this game that ended both their careers. Johnson, also made the save on the long run by Orr before the goal line stand.
man did it rain. you couldn't sit down water was coming down the stadium seats like a water fall. rain gear did no good. when the poles came out on Monday OU had moved to #1 and Texas to # 2. leaving the stadium everybody was stunned.
Wow. I'd forgotten about the two... um... shall we say, "questionable" calls on Texas's final drive. Love the old-fashioned football. Power running attacks, three backs in the backfield, stout defenses. Every inch was given grudgingly.
Wow I clearly remember this game! Both teams went in very different directions after this game! I also felt Texas struggled after this game until the start of the 1990 season
19:34, Oklahoma punter clearly fields the ball on a knee at his own 37. Completely ignored by the head referee, punt goes through for a touchback and denies Texas 43 yards worth of field position. Nobody talks about this play, yet it happened before the other plays in question.That's...handy.
Of course it is. OU always plays the victim in the rivalry. The calls always go against them. Right!! I was on the UT sidelines for this game and just remember our coaches yelling about it.
@@scottmartinets1000 I brought this up in another video. It's hysterical on how the OU fans react to it. UT fans need to stop apologizing for this game.
oklahoma got ripped off, that was a interception in the inzone, that ref didnt know where the ball went, he was just looking at the texas receiver, alot of games would have different out come back then if they had the reveiws in place
Wow after all these years I realize it was Nelson and not Darren Norris on that late long run, and then Nelson, again stopped instead of who I thought, Edwin Simmons.
Lifelong horn fan. I'll never forget this game. I was 10 and i remember running out of the house crying like a little girl when Darren Norris got stopped at the 1 yard line after he ran 50 yards down the sidelines because i just knew they wouldn't cash it in for a TD. I sure felt better when the refs blew the obvious int., tho, cuz I knew Sir Ward would nail the FG
Love how Keith just ignores the interception being in bounds and moves on or maybe that's the way it was edited. No way would announcers just move on today
Wow! Oklahoma clearly won that game! That was a fumble that OU recovered deep in Texas territory!! And clearly an interception on the deflection in the end zone!! Unbelievable!!
And now we know why we have instant replay and play reviews! What a rip! Double rip!
Instant replay didn't do any good for Oklahoma against Oregon
105 Yards by Spencer Tillman averaged 4.9 yards a carry. One of my favorite Sooners!!

Love how the announcers just ignore the interception being in bounds and move on. Today there would be endless replays
@@bleeding4721 This is 1984.
It was played on old school astroturf too. High speed knee wrenching astroturf.
For those talking about the OU punters knee touching the ground. There was no legal procedure called on the play that kills the play so the play is dead and the penalty is assessed
3:20 "BUSTER RHYMES" 😲
OU got screwed twice in the last drive, once on the fumble and once on the interception. however personally I wouldn't have gave Texas a safety.
I think Switzer said after the game," people say a tie is like kissing your sister, texas should be kissing the refs". lol

Was at this game sitting in the rain, as a Texas fan can say that OU did get screwed here.

@@enigmaticbrain1225 I kick my best dog though the window I was so mad
I remember a weird feeling walking back to car from the cotton bowl because neither teams fans were happy. Nobody was happy
@@benowen5792 It was a very strange afternoon after the game.
@@enigmaticbrain1225 OU made 2 strategic mistakes as well. Going for 2 and giving up the safety.

Been to only two actual OU/Texas games in my life. Both were ties. This one and 1976.
Yesssss.. I'm still salty about that interception robbery...
One of the biggest robbings of all time

Check out the OU punters knee later in the game. You just can’t pick out the one’s you want! 😢
Glad you added this one. Really great, hard-nosed game.
Wow I clearly remember this game! Both teams went in very different directions after this game! I also felt Texas struggled after this game until the start of the 1990 season
Texas fell apart got waxed by TAMU and Iowa in the last few games of the season.
@@kurtgreaser988 exactly right, I think Texas as one point was 7-1-1 and lost their last three games. Houston won the Conference
@@kurtgreaser988 yeah man, I remember that freedom bowl demolition by Iowa. The Season just fell apart after this gift tie
This game was the last stand for Fred Akers as the Texas coach, After this the wheels of the program came off and Fred was fired after the 86 season

Minor compared to missing a Fumble and an Interception call on Texas' game-tying drive.
When Texas was back🤧🤘🏻

After the 84 season , it would be a long time before texas would see a #1 ranking again.
Took the arrival of one Vincent Paul Young, Jr.
And the inability of the University of Spoiled Children to convert on a 4th and 2.
Remember watching this game at 13. Wanted to buy new football shoes. Superb athletes.
The days before instant replay. Great game. Shalom
This was not before instant replay. This was before official reviews. Instant replay had been around since the early to mid 1960s.
@hermanator74301 Yes, they had it, but it was still in its early stages. It wasn't used to determine plays are ball games. Shalom
Would like to see that game go into overtime
Man I love cfb!!!
Yeah, he was in bounds.
Wow after all these years I realize it was Nelson and not Darren Norris on that late long run, and then Nelson, again stopped instead of who I thought, Edwin Simmons.
Unbelievably bad officiating. Also, Barry Switzer would have never played for a tie.

After this game the season for Texas went downhill fast.
Looks like it rained a bit that day.
Love how Keith just ignores the interception being in bounds and moves on or maybe that's the way it was edited. No way would announcers just move on today
Actually, that's the way it was edited. In the full game, you can hear Frank Broyles was incredulous at the call.
Both acknowledged it on the replays after time expired. Broyles: "That's too bad, Keith." "Too bad? They'll be inconsolable."
Thank goodness for replay and overtime..
We got hosed by the refs
If there was instant replay then
We would have WON
But the pollsters drop texass
That’s some classic game
"Katy bar the door!" - which means "look out for trouble"
Great game. Thanks for the upload
Where was the no huddle????
Needs more cowbell
Barry Switzer was some kind of 😡 about this
Why they have OU at 2 when they were 3...the ironic thing is even though it was a tie OU moved up to 2 and Texas fell to 3..
Depended on which poll you looked at.
Playing for ties is such a sucka move.
The BoZ!
An interception at 12:09. Awful officiating. OU robbed of the game.
Crazy game. 👍
Jackson the announcer was so anti OU . You can tell
Ou could've won the game that day if Keith stansberry made the interception
He did make it. Refs made a horrible call.
